The automation of dredging operations has been actively researched by scholars all over the world for a couple of years. Based on the prior research results of dredging operations, an expert control system that is aimed to realize online operation optimization and automatic control of dredging process is introduced in this paper. Details on the problem to be dealt with and the expert system (ES) based solution are introduced; the focus of this paper is put on the architecture, knowledge presentation and inferential mechanism of the ES. An expert control software program is developed with C++. Based on the test platform constructed the performance of the ES is evaluated by comparison. Experiments show that the expert control scheme presented is capable of realizing automatic dredging process control with acceptable performance.

Abstract:Dredging operation is characterized by considerably high cost. For manually control dredging process is of low production and poor efficiency, in order to raise production and reduce unit cost, automatically controlled dredging equipment is urgently required. Expert system based production optimization and control system proposed in this paper is an initial attempt to tackle these problems with artificial technology in this area. To cope with the complicated control and optimization task, a multi-layer multi-agent scheme is introduced in the structure of the expert system. For the variety of knowledge obtained and its considerably large amount, design of knowledge presentation methods is an important aspect of this application, several styles of knowledge presentation methods are incorporated in the developed system. Inference mechanism of the expert system is also briefly described in this paper. Finally, preliminary test results are presented and compared with judgment of experienced operators

Abstract:After analysis of dredging process and requirements for dredging operations, the design and implementation of an expert system were presented in detail, that was aimed to realize dredging process optimization and fault prevention. Primary aspects of the dredging expert systems such as function and structure design, knowledge presentation and inference mechanism were also presented. A system developed based on the scheme presented herein was introduced. Experimental results show that it can effectively reduce the variation of the dredging process parameters and keep constantly the production of dredging operations at a comparatively high level.

Abstract:Dredger is the most important equipment in port construction and waterway reclamation projects. This paper presents a complete scheme for monitoring and control of cutter suction dredgers. The proposed scheme has introduced a hierarchical structure; in the topmost level a knowledge based system is designed to realize overall optimization, coordinated control and fault handling; in the process control level a couple of controllers are designed. This paper gives detailed introduction to the design of the knowledge processing mechanism, and also the control algorithms for the slurry concentration and slurry velocity, these are the most important aspects in dredging operations. Implementation examples on newly constructed dredgers are finally presented. Software is developed to control the hydraulic driven movements, engine system and also the slurry transportation system. Overall optimization and fault processing tasks are also carried out by software developed. Experiment results carried out on site are presented and compared in the last; it is verified through actual operations that the proposed monitoring and control scheme can achieve acceptable performance; a much smoother dredging process is achieved.

Abstract:A mathematical model for dredging optimization was constructed and analyzed. The optimization goal of dredging operation was firstly specified, and the dynamics and constraints for normal operation were analyzed. A new online optimization method for automated dredging operations was proposed, which overcomes the weakness of currently applied offline optimization methods that cannot be adequately used in the continuous optimization process of automatic dredging operations. Especially the methods for system state evaluation and control decisions for optimization were introduced. Based on real-time process data, without relying on the precise description of the characteristics of dredging equipment, this method can easily adapt to the continuous variation of dredging process. Field experiments were carried out to compare the performances of the offline and online methods. The results show that this method can steadily keep the production at a higher level than that of the offline method, and a much smoother dredging process can be achieved by using this method.

Abstract:The hinge and suction dredger is widely used in the construction field such as in river and lake management, water dredging, and port infrastructure projects, etc. With the continuous development of modern dredging technology, the traditional hinge and suction dredger cannot adapt to the complex environment during the construction process and there are problems such as large energy consumption and over-excavation and leakage excavation. In this paper, a double cutter dredger was designed that has a wider adaptability to water than a single cutter dredger. At the same time, based on the principle of passive adaptive control, the working parameters of the control system were calculated and determined, and an adaptive control algorithm was proposed to determine the water environment by using the current difference between the two cutters. Finally, the feasibility of the structure and algorithm was verified by experiments. The efficiency of cutter suction dredger was improved, and the energy consumption was reduced by 9–25% in the ideal state.

Abstract:This article discusses an intelligent expert control system for the cutter head speed of the shield tunneling machine, in which the earth layer recognition method and the drive power efficiency appraise method are proposed. The earth layer recognition system was based on the statistical pattern classification method and the method of calculation to the approach degree to the feature area by the data gained in simulation tunneling test. The power of the cutter head drive system was appraised by the power efficiency index proposed in this paper which is the key parameter to the speed control system of the cutter head. Finally, this paper discusses a closed loop controlled hydraulic system which dominated by the expert control system.

Abstract:After a long time of navigation, marine fouling occurs on a ship's hull and propeller, leading to higher frictional resistance of the hull and lower effectual output of the propeller, and it also damages the hull and propeller. Currently, there are extensive studies on robots for underwater cleaning of ship hulls with large areas and relatively regular surfaces. However, robots for underwater cleaning of propellers with complicated spatial surfaces are still in demand. Motivated by this need, a solution for cleaning the propeller by the underwater manipulator is proposed in this study. Coarse registration and iterative closest point fine registration were adopted to improve the propeller's locating accuracy. Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II was applied to optimize the trajectory of the B-spline joint to obtain an optimized trajectory that meets the specific requirements of the underwater manipulator. Finally, sliding mode control was adopted for high trajectory tracking. The integrated task of locating, trajectory planning, and control was simulated. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the above methods and the feasibility of the proposed scheme. This study serves as a guideline for further research in the analysis and system design of the underwater manipulator for cleaning propellers.

Abstract:In this paper, the trailing suction hopper dredger dredging production is used to be an optimization objective. By analyzing the impacts of dredging operation behaviors and system uptime factors, an artificial neural network algorithm for parameter optimization of dredging operations is proposed. Based on the field construction parameters of the trailing suction hopper dredger, the method integrates the genetic algorithm for solving common the dredging job of production optimization problem, and gives the optimized parameters. Adopting the field collecting data, the simulation test is carried out on the VC++ platform. The simulation results show that the method provided in this paper can be effective to carry on the dredging operations modeling and parameter optimization problem. Given the same operating conditions, it is able to meet the production constraints. Meanwhile, based on this method, a dredging operation decision support software program is developed with VC++. The software is based on actual demand, the use of algorithms automatically give the construction parameters of the optimization.

Abstract:A work condition monitoring system is widely used for recording the real-time states of cutter suction dredgers during the dredging process. However, the obtained data cannot provide enough actionable information directly for construction efficiency. This paper presents a novel method to evaluate the construction efficiency of cutter suction dredgers from the perspective of construction cycles. The construction cycle related to dredging operations was first introduced. A new algorithm of selecting cycle characteristic parameters (ASCCP) was proposed to determine the cycle characteristic parameters. Combined with three-dimensional (3D) visualization of the dredging track of the dredger, the method of construction cycle recognition was established. Then, the efficiency-evaluation methods based on construction cycles and the time-utilization ratio were adopted to evaluate the construction efficiency. Finally, a case study showed that the proposed approach was feasible to evaluate the construction efficiency of the cutter suction dredger. Moreover, the methods of the present work can be implemented in any cutter suction dredger and aid construction project managers in managing equipment-related work tasks on construction sites.
Working Points Online Dynamic Optimization Method for Dredge Slurry Pipeline Transport System

Abstract:Based on the analysis of the structure,characteristics and boundary conditions of a dredge slurry pipeline transport system,a novel working points online dynamic optimization method is introduced,which uses the pipeline system's specific energy consumption as its optimization goal.This method can solve not only the problem of high energy consumption and low efficiency of the optimization methods which use output maximum as their goals,but also the problem that offline static optimization methods cannot be applied to the slurry pipeline transport system's working points online continuous optimization.Based on the real time process data analysis,this method uses the fuzzy decision method to optimize the working points' parameters.This method doesn't rely on the precise description of the characteristics of slurry pipeline transport system and it can be easily applied to the dredging operation,during which the soil and system's characteristics vary from time to time.Comparison experiments of this method and conventional manual operating method are carried out in the dredging field of Linhai County,Zhejiang Province,China.Experiment results show that this method can not only improve the dredging output,but also minimize the fluctuation of slurry concentration and velocity,thus the slurry pipeline transport system's specific energy consumption is lower and its efficiency is higher.
A real-time green construction optimization strategy for engineering vessels considering fuel consumption and productivity: A case study on a cutter suction dredger

Abstract:Energy saving in the process of engineering construction is an indispensable measure to achieve industrial low carbon emissions. To reduce fuel consumption in the construction process of engineering vessels, a real-time green construction optimization strategy for engineering vessels considering fuel consumption and productivity is proposed. A cutter suction dredger (CSD) is taken as a case study. Based on its working principle, a series of potential monitoring features are determined. In addition, details of data collection are presented. Then, the original data obtained are cleaned based on human experience. The Hilbert Schmidt independence criterion least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (HSIC Lasso) was used to filter out irrelevant and redundant factors to achieve feature dimensionality reduction, followed by data standardization based on the robust scaler function. Five machine learning models, including gradient boosting regression tree (GBRT), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), random forest regression (RFR), support vector regression (SVR) and super learner based on stacked strategy (SLBSS), are used to train and test offline data on the basis. The Taguchi test method is used to optimize the hyperparameters of these models. In addition, an online data collection, processing and analysis framework is proposed. The online data collected in real time are used to predict the fuel consumption level based on this framework. Finally, feature importance is analyzed. Aiming at the minimum fuel consumption per unit productivity (FC pup), specific and feasible optimization suggestions are made for CSD construction. The results show that machine learning models can predict the fuel consumption level effectively. The first seven important features should be used for prediction. The productivity, lubricating oil pressure of the pump gearbox in the cabin and slurry density are the three most important factors. Improving the parameters related to productivity and reducing the sailing speed, reamer motor voltage and washing pressure of reamer bearings can improve fuel efficiency, which is beneficial to energy savings and emission reduction. Engineering construction shows that this strategy can reduce the fuel consumption of the CSD by approximately 20%.

Abstract:In marine engineering and water conservancy projects, dredging often occurs due to silt accumulation, which can impede the long-term development of water ecosystems and water storage systems. To enhance dredging efficiency and the performance of dredging machines, a novel type of winch suction underwater dredging robot was designed. Computational fluid dynamics software was utilized to establish a fluid model of the robot's winch suction dredging device and conduct model simulation experiments. The simulation test results were used to investigate the factors influencing dredging performance and their impact laws. Five key factors—namely, the reamer rotational speed, reamer arrangement angle, water flow rate, inlet pipe diameter, and outlet pipe diameter—were selected for consideration. By setting up various sets of factor levels, the significant influence of different factors on dredging efficiency was examined. Analysis of variance was employed to analyse the results of the orthogonal experimental design, leading to the identification of optimal factor levels and the establishment of an optimal scheme group. The results of the optimal scheme were verified, demonstrating a 13.049% increase in dredging efficiency and a 19.23% decrease in power consumption of the sludge pump compared to the initial experimental setup. The performance of the optimal program surpassed that of all the experimental designs and met the design requirements.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part M: Journal of Engineering for the Maritime Environment, Ahead of Print. In order to optimize the operation parameters of cutter suction dredger in real time and adjust productivity as needed, a construction optimization strategy based on real-time productivity regression analysis is proposed. Machine learning methods, including Support Vector Regression (SVR), Gradient Boosting Regression Tree (GBRT), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) and a Super Learner that made up of them, are used to mine relevant features based on the big data of operation characteristics and equipment status. Firstly, the working principle of cutter suction dredger is analyzed, the features that need real-time monitoring are determined, and the above features are classified. Then, some missing values and outliers in the data are deleted. Next, Lasso method is used to eliminate the variables that are not related to the regression target, and the redundant variables are combined. In addition, five machine learning methods are used to train and test the off-line productivity data of cutter suction dredger. And they are used to fit recent online productivity data. Super Learner performed best, which achieved the highest R2 (0.917), the lowest RMSE (75.096) and MAE (61.422) in the five models for online regression. Furthermore, the calculation time of each model is discussed, and the feasibility of the method proposed in this study for real-time regression of online productivity data has been confirmed. Finally, the importance of characteristics is analyzed to provide guidance for dredging operations under restricted construction conditions. According to the regression results and the importance of features, operators can give priority to adjusting some features to adjust the real-time construction productivity of dredger.
Design and Optimization of Slurry Conveying System for Small-sized Cutter Suction Dredger

Abstract:Aiming at the production capacity of a newly-built small-sized dredger, the slurry conveying system is optimized. Based on the performance test of the model pump, the water performance curve of the dredge pump is obtained through similarity conversion; By comparing the resistance of the two pipe diameters, the diameters of the suction and discharge pipes on the dredger are optimized, and the resistance consumption of the slurry conveying pipeline on the dredger is reduced. The proportion of the resistance of the pipe on the dredger to the head of the dredge pump is reduced from 11.7% and 28.7% to 4.8% and 13.5% respectively at the flow of 900 m 3 /h and 1,200 m 3 /h; After optimizing the pipe diameter, the NPSHa of the device is increased, the risk of cavitation of the dredge pump is reduced, and the slurry transportation capacity of the dredger is improved; The operating points of slurry transportation with conveying distance of 500 m to 3,000 m are calculated and analyzed respectively, and the production prediction curve is obtained to meet the design capacity of the dredger. The optimization of the slurry conveying system improves the matching of the dredge pump and pipeline to the dredger, and provides equipment support for the environmental protection dredging project of rivers, lakes and reservoirs.

Abstract:In order to improve the efficiency of dredging, reduce the cost of dredging and ensure the safety of operation, this paper designs an underwater building surface dredging robot (hereinafter referred to as "underwater dredging robot"), which mainly includes the following aspects. The structure of underwater dredging robot is planned and divided into dredging system, walking system, driving system and support system. According to the actual work situation and the characteristics of each system, the scheme selection and structure design are carried out, and the overall layout scheme is obtained. The materials of the support system are selected and its force under different working conditions is analyzed. Through finite element analysis and modal analysis, it is verified that its reliability meets the requirements and there is no resonance phenomenon in the work.

Abstract:The energy-saving mechanism of the dredging slurry pipeline transport system was analyzed from three aspects: minimizing the pipeline energy consumption,raising the pump-station efficiency,and achieving the coordinated control of pump-stations.A working-point on-line dynamic optimization method and a multi-pump coordinated control strategy were presented.Based on the real-time measuring process data,the fuzzy decision method and the data fusion technique were used to optimize the working-point parameters dynamically,thus to obtain the lowest specific energy consumption of the slurry pipeline transport system.A general packet radio service(GPRS) based multi-pump coordinated control platform was constructed,which utilized the pump stations' real-time measuring process parameters and adopts fuzzy decision method to coordinate the pumps' control,thus to get the highest efficiency of the pump stations.Field experiments were carried out and the results showed that the proposal optimization method and the control strategy are easy to realize,the system devices are convenient to reconstruct,and good energy-saving performance can be obtained.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the propulsion system of 4 500 m3 trailing suction hopper dredger,through actual measurement for main machine,learning about its operating condition after using for several years.Under the premise of the invariable shafting and adjustment mechanism,designing a new ducted CPP to replace its original controllable propeller,the comparative study based on theoretical calculations and measurement on site shows that this reform increases the thrust force of the dredger and with better economic benefits to save energy and improve efficiency.
