Abstract:Polarized blue electroluminescence has been achieved from the oriented poly (9, 9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) film on a rubbed hole injection layer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) at the CIE coordinates of (0.20, 0.21). Polarized absorption and photoluminescence spectra reveal that the dichroism of the PFO film is influenced by the rubbing strength of the alignment layer, the annealing temperature, and annealing time, among which the annealing temperature is the most significant factor. An electroluminescence polarization ratio of about 3 is achieved when the rubbing depth is 50μm, the annealing temperature is 200℃ and the annealing time is 30 min.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel Eu3+ polymer named PRL basing on a new Eu-containing monomer was synthesized and was used as a red light-emitting material in our organic electroluminescent device with single layer structure of ITO/PRL/Al. This material had strong photoluminescence, good chromaticity and can transport both holes and electrons. Being a polymer, the device made by use simple spin-coating method in stead of the usual doped spin-coating and vacuum deposition The brightness of 80cd/m(2) was achieved at the voltage of 26V. And we try to explained the mechanism of this EL device according to its photoluminescence, electroluminescence, B-V and I-V characteristic. And we also measured its mobility and explained the reason of its relatively high drive voltage and low luminescence.

Abstract:Polymer-based light-emitting diode employ N-vinylcarbazole(PVK) doped by dilute phosphorescent dye factris-(2-phenylpyridine) iridium[Ir(ppy)_3]as active layer was fabricated. According to the changes in the electroluminescence(EL) spectrum and the relative intensity of photoluminescence(PL) spectrum of doped PVK,the dependence of the ratio of triplet exciton formation cross-section to that of PVK singlet exciton on bias is deduced.

Abstract:Blue emission from polymer blends composed of poly (2,5-dibutoxyphenyiene) (PPP) in a matrix polymer poly (N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) is reported. The light-emitting layer can be fabricated by spin-coating of PPP-PVK blend solution without subsequent processing or heat treatment. A cell structure of glass substrate/indium-tin-oxide/PPP-PVK blend/aluminum is employed. Blue light emission with a peak position at 448 nm occurs at a bias of about 8 V.

Abstract:The photoluminescent and electroluminescent characteristics of a blend polymer system consisting of a novel fluorene-carbazole copolymer (PFC) and poly(vinylcarbazole) (PVK) were investigated. Three OLED devices with the structures of indium-tin-oxide (ITO)/PVK:PFC/bathocuproine(BCP)/tris-(8-hydroxylquinoline)-aluminum (Alq3)/Mg∶Ag, indium-tin-oxide(ITO)/PFC/bathocuproine(BCP)/Alq3/Mg∶Ag and indium-tin-oxide(ITO)/PVK/ bathocuproine(BCP)/Alq3/Mg∶Ag respectively, were fabricated. The optoelectronic properties of the devices were measured. The results demonstrated that PVK in the blend system effectively restrained the formation of PFC excimers in solid films. Light emission of the device with blend system shifted with the variation of applied electric field, and variable color ranging from green to blue could be obtained. The luminance of blue light reached 1650cd/m2 when the drive voltage was higher than 7V. It was inferred that an energy transfer process from PVK to PFC might have occurred in this blend system.

Abstract:Electroluminescence (EL) is reported from a novel polymer blend of poly(2,5-dibutoxyphenylene) (PPP) and polymer poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK). Since PPP and PVK are soluble in common organic solvents, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can be fabricated by spin-coating films of the polymer blends from solution without subsequent processing or heat treatment. Indium-tin-oxide (ITO) and aluminum (Al) are used as the hole-injection and electron-injection electrodes, respectively. Blue light emission is observed at about 8 V and have a peak emission wavelength at 448 nm at room temperature. The EL efficiency is about 0.82%, which is greater than.that of pure PPP by approximately one order of magnitude.

Abstract:White organic light-emitting diode (WOLED) with a structure of ITO/poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK)/4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Bphen)/tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum (Alq3)/LiF/Al has been fabricated via the thermal evaporation technique. The electroluminescence (EL) spectrum of the as-fabricated WOLED covers from 380 to 700nm of the visible light region with a wide blue emission from PVK and an interesting new red emission. The red emission at 613nm in EL spectra of the WOLED was attributed to electroplex emission at PVK/Bphen interface since it was not observed in photoluminescence spectra. The WOLED showed a Commission International De l'Eclairage coordinate of (0.31, 0.32), which is very close to the standard white coordinate (0.33, 0.33).

Abstract:Tetra-methylester of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylicacid (TMEP) has been synthesized and used as additive to improve the efficiency in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on poly(N-vinyl-carbazole) (PVK). Spectra were measured for both photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) for films of PVK doped with TMEP. We concluded that Forster energy transfer from PVK to TMEP occurs in both cases of PL and EL. Examination of the PL and EL spectra revealed that more emission originated from TMEP for EL than for PL at a given doping level because charge transfer to TMEP results in additional pathway to TMEP emission. EL spectra show reduced turn on voltages with the increasing TMEP doping concentration in doped devices. The reduced turn on voltage is attributed to the easier charge hopping at higher TMEP concentration. The energy levels of the materials show that the electron injection barrier from Al to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level of TMEP is much lower than that of PVK. These results show that charge hopping is an important mechanism in the efficiency enhancement based on guest-host OLED. Optimum device is get at 5% TMEP doping concentration and emits at steady region even at high driving voltage.

Abstract:The PL and EL properties of a novel light-emitting alternating copolymer composed of triphenylamine (TPA) and phenylene vinylene derivate (MEHPPV), that is, TPA-MEHPPV and its blend with PVK were demonstrated. A considerable enhancement of the EL intensity was observed by using the polymer blends as the emission layer in the organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). The energy transfer process in the polymer blends was also discussed.

Abstract:We report violet-blue emission from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) fabricated by dispersing a soluble conjugated polymer poly(2,5-dibutoxyphenylene) (PPP) and an organic electron-transporting material 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butyl-phenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) into a hole-transporting polymer poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK). The emission film can be spin-coated by the blend solution. The air-stable aluminum is used as the cathode material. The electroluminescent efficiency of the device reaches 1.2%, which is more than 100 times that of the device made with only PPP. The LEDs turn on at about 20 V and have a peak emission wavelength in the violet-blue region at 434 nm.

Abstract:Two kinds of pyrazoline derivatives, 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-4,5-dihydro-1,5-diphenyl 1-H-Pyrazole, (P-1) and 3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4,5-dihydro-1,5-diphenyl 1-H-Pyrazole (P-2) were synthesized. They showed efficient photoluminescence (PL) in both solid state and solution. The emission peak of P-1 was observed at 450 nm and that of P-2 was at 432 nm. Two types of organic electroluminescent devices (OELDs) using these materials as emitting layer were fabricated, one is a three-layered structure device fabricated by dry process and another is a single or double layer structure device fabricated by a wet technique. These materials were found to function as good blue light-emitting materials for OELDs. The device with a structure of ITO/TPD/P-1/Alq(3)/Mg:Ag showed a turn-on voltage of 3.5 V, while the device using P-2 instead of P-1 gave a trim-on voltage of 3 V, both of them give green light resulting from Alq(3) and the maximum light intensity was 5710 cd/m(2) under driving voltage of 8.5 V. The device of ITO/PVK + P-1/Alq(3)/Al emitted bright blue light resulting from P-1. It exhibited a maximum luminance of 200 cd/m(2) at a driving voltage of 12 V, and the device of ITO/PVK + P-2/Al exhibited blue light of 200 cd/m(2) at a driving voltage of 11 V. Electroplex Light Emission Based on BCP and a Novel Star-Shaped Hexafluorenylbenzene

Abstract:Organic light emitting diode (OLEDs) are fabricated using a novel star-shaped hexafluorenylbenzene with a simple structure of indium-tin-oxide (ITO)/1,2,3,4,5,6-hexakis(9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl)benzene (HKEthFLYPh):N, N'-bis-(1-naphthyl)-N,N'-diphenyl-(1,1'-biphenyl)-4,4'-diamine (NPB)/2,9-dimenthyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BCP)/tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3)/Mg:Ag by spin coating method. The electroluminescent properties of the device are characterized. The results show that there is a new peak at 600 nm, which is no appearance in PL spectra. This new emission is proposed to be electroplex that occurred at the solid-state interface between HKEthFLYPh and BCP in addition to the exciton emission from NPB. The Commissions Internationale De L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of the device are (x=0.33, y=0.29) at 10 V, which obviously belongs to white light emission.
Narrow Emission from Polyimide Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Novel organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using polyimidy, fluorene-based cardo perylere polyimide (PFB5) were fabricated. EL properties of single-layer light-emitting diodes (LED) of indium- tin-oxide (ITO)/PFB5/Al and ITO/PFB5+PBD/Al and multi-layer devices of ITO/PFB5/PBD/Al, ITO/PFB5/Alq/Al were characterized. In the pure PFB5 single layer device, the EL spectrum has a broad band and the peak wavelength at 420 nm, 450 rim, and 545 nm respectively. However, the EL emission from the single layer device of PFB5 blend PBD or multi-layer devices has the greatly narrow band and the peak wavelength at 545 rim. Furthermore, the EL efficiency is improved significantly in these EL devices.

Abstract:A new light-emitting copolymer [poly(distyrylbenzene-block-tri(ethylene oxide)) (DSB-TEO)], containing alternating rigid, conjugated distyrylbenzene as light-emitting units and flexible tri(ethylene oxide) as ionic conductive units, was synthesized via Wittig reaction. The polymer has fairly good solubility in chloroform and excellent film-forming ability. Single-layer and double-layer light-emitting diodes with indium tin oxide anodes and calcium cathodes were fabricated, and the photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) properties were investigated. Single layer light emitting diode with DSB-TEO as the active layer(ITO/PEDOT:PSS/DSB-TEO/Ca) showed bright blue emission with luminance over 450 cd/m(2) and efficiency of 0.1 cd/A. Inserting a thin layer of Alq3 between the copolymer and the cathode improved the device performance, luminance over 1000 cd/m(2) and efficiency of 0.5 cd/A could be achieved. The enhanced emission in the longer wave part due to Alq(3) contribution is negligible. This polymer may also be a good candidate material for light emitting electrochemical cells (LECs).

Abstract:By placing a hole blocking layer between the polymer and the metallic electrode, we have achieved improved efficiencies for blue electroluminescent devices fabricated with poly (N-vinylcarbazole) doped with 1, 1, 4, 4, -tetraphenyl-1, 3-butadiene as the emitter layer and with aluminum and indium/tin-oxide as the electron and hole injecting electrodes. This bilayer device yields bright blue emission having intensity of 300 cd/m(2), in same case the devices without hole blocking layer have luminance of only 44 cd/m(2).

Abstract:Small molecular Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with high efficiency composed of 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BCP) and N, N'-bis-(1-naphthyl)-N, N'-biphenyl-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4-diamine (NPB) as an electron transporting layer and an emitting layer, respectively were studied. Two devices of indium-tin-oxide (ITO)/NPB/BCP/8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum (Alq(3))/Mg:Ag and ITO/NPB/BCP/ Mg:Ag with unique simple structure were fabricated. The luminance-voltage and current density-voltage characteristics of devices were investigated. The results demonstrated that the maximum luminance of the double and triple-layer devices is 11500cd/m(2) and 5000 cd/m(2) at 15V, respectively. The maximum luminous power efficiency is 1.21m/W at the luminance of 300cd/m(2) and the luminous efficiency of 2.7cd/A. The peak of Electroluminescence (EL) spectrum locates at 433nm and the Commissions Internationale d'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates are (0.18, 0.17), which is consistent with the Photoluminescent (PL) spectrum of NPB. The bright blue light emission is independent on the variation of bias voltage. The diversity of device performance with two different structures was discussed.
Single Layer Light‐emitting Diodes from Copolymers Comprised of Mesogen‐jacketed Polymer Containing Oxadiazole Units and PVK

Abstract:A series of copolymers PCt-co-Poly(N-vinylcarbazole) were synthesized through common radical polymerization, in which P-Ct as a kind of mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer was introduced, and the effects of copolymers composing variation on the optical properties of the polymers were studied. The structures and properties of the copolymers were characterized and evaluated by thermogravimetric (TGA), UV, photoluminescence (PL), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electroluminescence (EL) analyses. All the polymers enjoy high thermal stability. PL peaks in the film show blue-shift compared with in solutions and fluorescent quantum efficiency decreased with the N-vinylcarbazole (nvk) content increasing, which supported the efficient energy transfer from nvk units to the oxadiazole units. CV revealed that, with the incorporation of nvk to the copolymer, these copolymers had high-lying HOMO energy levels ranging from -5.94 to -6.09 eV. Single-layer light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with the configuration of ITO/PEDOT/PCt-nvk/Mg:Ag/Ag were fabricated, which emit a blue light around 450 and 490 nm with a maximum luminance of 703 cd/m(2). The device performance varies with the content of nvk and device configuration, with device configuration (b) and PCt-nvk8 giving the best value of external quantum efficiency of 0.27%. We show here that by proper design copolymer structure and modification of device configuration can exhibit strong blue EL in higher external quantum efficiency. (c) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The synthesis of a high photoluminescence efficiency (88%, compared with tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)(Alq(3))) organic material 9,9-Dibutyl-N,N,N,N-tetraphenyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diamine (DTFD) via Ullmann condensation was reported. Exiciplex emission of the ITO/DTFD/2.2-[1,2-phenylenebis(oxy)]bis(N,N-diphenylacetamide)/Alq(3)/LiF/Al device was observed and the peak wavelength of the emission was measured to be 480 nm, which belongs to the blue region. A turn-on voltage as low as 4 V and maximal brightness as large as 400 cd m(-2) were measured. The electroluminescence spectrum was observed to be blue-shifted with increase in applied voltage.

An Efficient Blue Organic Light Emitting Structure

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the performance of an organic light emitting device ( OLED) with ITO / N,N-diphenyl-N,N-bis1-naphthyl-1,1-biphenyl-4,4-diamine (NPB) /copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) / NPB / Bathocuproine(BCP) tris-8-hydroxyquinoline Aluminum (Alq(3)) / LiF/ AL structure, fac the CuPc inserted between the two layers of NPB as a hole-consuming layer (HCL), and the BCP as a hole-blocking layer (HBL). The EL spectrum peak is at 430nm, indicating that the carrier recombination is confined in the NPB layer (near to BCP), in additional light emission originates from NPB. In order to demonstrate the trait of this structure, we designed two different devices, one device without CuPc (HCL) was applied at higher driver voltage, and the other device without BCP cannot achieve blue color light. It suggested that the CuPc and BCP exactly function as hole-consuming and hole-blocking layers, respectively, which enhance the efficiency of carrier's recombination and confine the excition in the EL layer.The blue-light-emitting device we presented in this work has some advantages:(I) relatively high efficiency(II) The chromaticity is insensitive to the driving current within a large range.(III) The structure is relatively simple, so the fabrication process owns highly reproducibility.
