Abstract:It is well known that the intercarrier interference (ICI) caused by the frequency offset may significantly degrade the system performance. Conventional ICI self-cancellation schemes can mitigate the ICI effect dramatically without doing frequency offset compensation, but the expense of halving spectral efficiency makes them less valuable. On the other hand, ICI can be suppressed by performing correlative coding in the frequency domain without halving spectral efficiency; however, this scheme usually cannot provide satisfactory performance in terms of the carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR) and the detection errors generated in the receiver would be propagated through OFDM symbols. It proposes an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system over frequency selective time-varying fading channels. As the symbol duration increases, OFDM is robust to channel multipath dispersion. Based on the assumption, the proposed method solves the linear channel parameters of each path and creates a channel matrix which can be used for ICI cancellation. Experiment results show that the proposed method can effectively suppress the ICI effects induced by the time variant channels and reduce the error floor of bit error rate (BER).

Abstract:In orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, time variation of multipath channels over an OFDM block period leads to a loss of orthogonality among subcarriers, resulting in intercarrier interference (ICI). In this paper, based on the analysis of the symbol energy distribution and the ICI generation mechanism, we propose a low-complexity partial minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) with successive detection (PMMSESD) scheme in frequency domain to mitigate ICI caused by time-varying channels. Each time, the proposed method detects the symbol with the largest received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) among all the undetected symbols, using an MMSE detector only considering the interference of several neighborhood subcarriers. Analysis and simulation results show that our PMMSESD method can effectively reduce the ICI with low computational complexity, it outperforms the MMSE method at relatively high Eb/N0 , and its performance is close to the MMSE with successive detection (MMSESD) method in the relatively low Doppler frequency region

Abstract:For orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems, the frequency offsets in mobile radio channels distort the orthogonality between subcarriers resulting in intercarrier interference (ICI), This paper studies an efficient ICI cancellation method termed ICI self-cancellation scheme. The scheme works in two very simple steps. At the transmitter side, one data symbol is modulated onto a group of adjacent subcarriers with a group of weighting coefficients. The weighting coefficients are designed so that the ICI caused by the channel frequency errors can be minimized. At the receiver side, by linearly combining the received signals on these subcarriers with proposed coefficients, the residual ICI contained in the received signals can then be further reduced. The carrier-to-interference power ratio (CIR) can be increased by 15 and 30 dB when the group size is two or three, respectively, for a channel with a constant frequency offset. Although the redundant modulation causes a reduction in bandwidth efficiency, it can be compensated, for example, by using larger signal alphabet sizes. Simulations show that OFDM systems using the proposed ICI self-cancellation scheme perform much better than standard systems while having the same bandwidth efficiency in multipath mobile radio channels with large Doppler frequencies.

Abstract:An interchannel interference(ICI) cancellation method was developed for time-domain synchronous orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing(TDS-OFDM) systems using a system transfer model derived for TDS-OFDM.The ICI cancellation method uses decision feed back based on the assumption that channel variations are linear within an OFDM block.Coarse channel estimates are based on a time-domain correlation of a pseudo-random number(PN) sequence with linear interpolation for the fine channel estimates over an OFDM block.Simulation results show that the method gives a bit error rate performance improvement of above 2 dB with comparative computational complexity against conventional methods used in TDS-OFDM systems.

Abstract:Interchannel interference(ICI) is a dominant source of error for OFDM systems in mobile dispersive fading channels. This paper provides an ICI analysis in time-variant multipath channels. Based on this analysis, the paper proposes an efficient channel estimation and ICI mitigation method for DVB-T/H system and further proposes and improved algorithm. The whole receiver system based on FPGA has been successfully aligned and debugged. The rationality and robustness of the design has been verified.

Abstract:In orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, the capability to support high mobility is greatly limited by the intercarrier interference (ICI) caused by time-frequency selective fading channels. This paper presents a precoded OFDM system for ICI mitigation. A precoder is introduced to relieve the ICI by transmitting N-point composite information symbols at twice the subcarrier interval. A Hadamard-matrix-like pilot pattern is used to recover the composite information symbols in a postprocessor at the receiver. Simulations show that, compared to the conventional self-cancellation scheme, this scheme gives much better signal-to-interference-noise ratio performance with much less overhead. Furthermore, the scheme can support twice the vehicle speed in time-frequency selective fading channels than the standard OFDM systems without ICI mitigation.

Abstract:This letter proposes a novel intercarrier interference (ICI) mitigation method for OFDM in time-varying multipath channels. By splitting an OFDM symbol into sub-symbols, ICI may be relieved but with price of increased inter-subsymbol-interference (ISI). The induced ISI is then cancelled by a linear filter with the use of null subcarriers. Simulations show that the proposed method may effectively mitigate ICI while improving OFDM with enhanced reliability against high Doppler spread.

Abstract:The implementation of OFDM system suffers from the effect of phase noise (PHN) generated by local oscillator (LO), which disturbs the orthogonality among subcarriers and causes intercarrier interference (ICI). In frequency domain, the received signal can be formulated as the circular convolution of the transmitted signal and the ICI weighting function. In this paper, the symmetric conjugate property of the ICI weighting function is investigated. Based on that, the ICI self-cancellation of symmetric data-conjugate method is studied to suppress PHN. A new ICI cancelling demodulation (ICD) scheme with frequency diversity combining is proposed. Under flat fading channel, the carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR) improvement from this proposed method is larger than 22 dB, and can tolerate a phase noise with standard deviation of 7 deg when BER is 10(-3). In frequency selective fading channel, the proposed method is shown to be able to offer significant diversity gain.

Abstract:The standard carrier interferometry orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(CI-OFDM) cannot effectively handle the Doppler spread in high-speed mobile environments.This paper describes an enhanced CI-OFDM(ECI-OFDM) to improve system performance in high-speed mobile environments up to 300 km/h.A cyclic prefix and a self-cancellation scheme are employed in the frequency domain using periodic expanded CI codes to cancel the inter-carrier-interference(ICI) caused by the Doppler spread.Theory analyses and simulations show that the maximum speed supported by the system is nearly double that of the standard system.

Abstract:Index modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (IM-OFDM) is a newly proposed technique, which achieves significantly improved error performance and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in comparison with classical OFDM due to the activation of partial subcarriers. However, in the presence of inter-carrier interference (ICI), error detection of the subcarrier indices may easily occur, such that the performance of IM-OFDM is severely degraded and can be even worse than classical OFDM. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose to tailor the ideas of classical ICI self-cancellation and two-path cancellation to IM-OFDM with two mapping methods, i.e., symmetric mapping and mirror mapping. Thanks to the joint design of the grouping and mapping methods, the proposed schemes inherit the IM-OFDM virtue of partially activated subcarriers but with reduced ICI. Monte Carlo Simulations validate that the proposed schemes significantly outperform conventional OFDM with ICI cancellation in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels with frequency deviation without sacrifice of the spectral efficiency and increase of the computational complexity.

Abstract:In an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, the performance is sensitive to the carrier frequency offset (CFO). This CFO will destroy the orthogonality between the subcarriers and cause intercarrier interference (Id), which not only reduces the carrier to interference power ratio (CIR), but also leads to a phase rotation of the desired signal. In existing ICI cancellation schemes, the discussion is mainly about CIR improvement, leaving the equally important phase rotation error (PRE) not considered. In this paper, ICI mechanism and polynomial cancellation coding (PCC) scheme is studied. We proposed a simple ICI cancellation scheme which can improve both CIR and PRE. Simulations show the proposed algorithm considerably outperforms the PCC scheme in the presence of large CFO. Especially, in lower signal to noise ratio (SNR) environment, the performance degradation using the proposed algorithm could be still within an acceptable range.

Abstract:Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has recently been used widely in wireless communication systems. OFDM is very effective in combating intersymbol interference and can achieve high data rate in frequency selective channel. For OFDM communication systems, the frequency offsets in mobile radio channels distort the orthogonality between subcarriers resulting in Inter Carrier Interference (ICI). ICI causes power leakage among subcarriers thus degrading the system performance. A wellknown problem of OFDM is its sensitivity to frequency offset between the transmitted and received carrier frequencies. There are two deleterious effects caused by frequency offset one is the reduction of signal amplitude in the output of the filters matched to each of the carriers and the second is introduction of ICI from the other carriers. This research work investigates three effective methods for combating the effects of ICI: ICI Self Cancellation (SC), Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimation, and Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) method. These three methods are compared in terms of bit error rate performance and bandwidth efficiency. Through simulations, it is shown that the three techniques are effective in mitigating the modulation schemes, the ML and EKF methods perform better than the SC method.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) techniques are attractive for underwater acoustic (UWA) communications due to their robustness against large multipath spread. However, OFDM systems in UWA channels suffer from intercarrier interference (ICI) caused by the Doppler effect. In this paper, we propose an effective mirror-mapping-based ICI self-cancellation method in OFDM UWA communications. Theoretical analyses and numerical results show that the proposed mirror-mapping-based ICI self-cancellation schemes can effectively reduce the carrier-to-interference power ratio (CIR) in comparison with the plain OFDM scheme in the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with carrier frequency offset (CFO). To demonstrate their benefits for OFDM UWA communications, the mirror-mapping-based ICI self-cancellation schemes were tested in a recent sea experiment, conducted in Taiwan in May 2013. The decoding results show that the mirror-mapping-based ICI self-cancellation schemes improve the BER performance of the OFDM system considerably in UWA channels.

Abstract:In a mobile fading environment, the time variation of the wireless channels is a dominating factor that leads to the system performance loss. Multipath delay spread also lead to a loss of subchannel orthogonality in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, known as interchannel interference (ICI). In this paper, the influences of ICI in mobile OFDM system are analyzed firstly. It is shown that ICI is only a function of the symbol energy (Es), the subchannel number (N) and the Doppler frequency (fD) in OFDM system, and is independent of signal constellation. To eliminate ICI then, an equalization algorithm based on Gauss-Seidel method is proposed. The main advantage of the iterative algorithm is to update the data vector x(k) in each iterative step as soon as the part of the new data vector x(k+1) have been calculated, therefore, the convergence of the algorithm can be accelerated effectively. The symbol error rate for a 16-QAM system is present by means of simulation results to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Time-varying channels destroy the orthogonality among subcarriers in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, and introduce intercarrier interference (ICI). Lots of efforts have been devoted to mitigate ICI in OFDM systems, with different frame structures and channel models, but the computational complexity of the methods is usually very high. In multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the complexity is even higher. In this paper, a low-complexity ICI mitigation method is proposed for MIMO-OFDM systems under the assumption of linear time-varying channels. It reduces the complexity of ICI compensation from O(K3(N3 + MN2 + MN) + NKlog(K)) to O(K(N3 + 2MN2 + 2MN + 2M2 + Nlog(K))), where K is the number of subcarriers, M the number of transmitters, and N the number of receivers. It requires channel estimation based on the linear time-varying channel model, and no transmission overhead is needed. The proposed algorithm applies to all OFDM systems as long as linear time-varying channel estimation is applicable. Time-domain synchronous-OFDM naturally suits for the proposed ICI mitigation algorithm because its receiver is able to easily estimate linear time-varying channels. Simulation with QPSK and 16QAM modulation demonstrates the performance of the proposed method, in comparison with no ICI mitigation case. It shows that 2 dB signal to noise gain is achieved when the uncoded bit error rate is 10-3 and the normalized Doppler frequency is 0.1.

Abstract:For the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing communication systems (OFDM), the theoretical bit error rate (BER) is difficult to obtain when intercarrier interference (ICI) is taken into account. The ICI is a random process caused by channel frequency errors, its distribution function is unknown. This paper gives theoretical BER expressions of OFDM systems, by exploring ICI performance in comparison with conventional single carrier communication systems. First, the BER upper bound is obtained by assuming that the received signals suffer maximum ICI. Then, by using the sequence development BER calculation method, an accurate theoretical BER expression for OFDM systems is derived and validated by simulations. In addition, such a BER calculation method is applied to the “ICI self cancellation OFDM system”, which is a system proposed for reducing system ICI signal level. It shows that BER of ICI self cancellation OFDM systems is rather robust to channel frequency errors, while the BER of normal OFDM systems increases rapidly with increasing frequency error

Abstract:Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems may suffer from both carrier frequency offset (CFO) and in-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) imbalance at the receiver front end. In this paper, a novel type of intercarrier interference (ICI) self-cancellation method using mirror mapping is proposed to combat these impairment. Based on the proposed novel method and by adopting two widely used mapping operations, we altogether derive two different mirror mapping schemes. Analysis and simulation results verify that the proposed mirror mapping schemes not only inherit the efficiency of the existing self-cancellation schemes in suppressing ICI caused by CFO but also have the ability of compressing or even eliminating IQ imbalance.
