Abstract:We mitigate the inter-channel-interference (ICI) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) superchannel by adding cancellation sub-carriers (CCs). We experimentally show that CC-OFDM outperforms conventional OFDM by 0.4-dB in a dual-polarization 400-Gbps 3360-km OFDM superchannel.

Abstract:One major challenge to implement orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems over doubly selective channels is the non-negligible intercarrier interference (ICI), which significantly degrades the system performance. Existing solutions to cope with ICI include zero-forcing (ZF), minimum mean square error (MMSE) and other linear or nonlinear equalization methods. However, these schemes fail to achieve a satisfactory tradeoff between performance and computational complexity. To address this problem, in this paper we propose two novel nonlinear ICI cancellation techniques, which are referred to as parallel interference cancelation (PIC) and hybrid interference cancelation (HIC). Taking advantage of the special structure of basis expansion model (BEM) based channel matrices, our proposed schemes enjoy low computational complexity and are capable of cancelling ICI effectively. Moreover, since the proposed schemes can flexibly select different basis functions and be independent of the channel statistics, they are applicable to practical OFDM based systems such as DVB-T2 over doubly selective channels. Theoretical analysis and simulation results both confirm their performance-complexity advantages in comparison with some existing methods.

Abstract:We have recently demonstrated the improved phase noise tolerance in coherent optical OFDM by digital coherent superposition of optical OFDM subcarriers, which are phase-conjugated pairs with Hermitian symmetry. In this approach, we realized DCS of OFDM subcarriers in single polarization (or channel), denoted as SP-DCS-OFDM. In this paper, we show that another approach is in dual polarizations, or DP-DCS-OFDM. According to the concept of phase-conjugated twin wave, both approaches can also mitigate the fiber nonlinearity to the first order. We prove that both approaches can cancel the inter-carrier interference (ICI) due to phase noise to the second order, and we derive the reduced ICI power to the fourth order using the Wiener phase noise model. In simulation, we show the enhanced tolerance to the laser phase noise and fiber nonlinearity.

Abstract:This paper investigates the sidelobe suppression techniques of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based cognitive radio (CR) systems. We firstly argue that the existing sidelobe suppression algorithms cannot satisfy the special requirements of CR systems. Then we formulate the interference suppression problem of CR systems into two algorithms from capacity perspective, namely, average power allocation with cancellation subcarrier (CCs) scheme and adaptive subcarrier weighting scheme. We show that the capacity of the two schemes can well approximate the ideal waterfilling algorithm performance. We further show that under tough interference suppression requirement of licensed users (LU), the adaptive subcarrier weighting scheme is a better choice for CR systems.

Abstract:The implementation of OFDM system suffers from the effect of phase noise (PHN) generated by local oscillator (LO), which disturbs the orthogonality among subcarriers and causes intercarrier interference (ICI). In frequency domain, the received signal can be formulated as the circular convolution of the transmitted signal and the ICI weighting function. In this paper, the symmetric conjugate property of the ICI weighting function is investigated. Based on that, the ICI self-cancellation of symmetric data-conjugate method is studied to suppress PHN. A new ICI cancelling demodulation (ICD) scheme with frequency diversity combining is proposed. Under flat fading channel, the carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR) improvement from this proposed method is larger than 22 dB, and can tolerate a phase noise with standard deviation of 7 deg when BER is 10(-3). In frequency selective fading channel, the proposed method is shown to be able to offer significant diversity gain.

Abstract:It is well known that the intercarrier interference (ICI) caused by the frequency offset may significantly degrade the system performance. Conventional ICI self-cancellation schemes can mitigate the ICI effect dramatically without doing frequency offset compensation, but the expense of halving spectral efficiency makes them less valuable. On the other hand, ICI can be suppressed by performing correlative coding in the frequency domain without halving spectral efficiency; however, this scheme usually cannot provide satisfactory performance in terms of the carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR) and the detection errors generated in the receiver would be propagated through OFDM symbols. It proposes an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system over frequency selective time-varying fading channels. As the symbol duration increases, OFDM is robust to channel multipath dispersion. Based on the assumption, the proposed method solves the linear channel parameters of each path and creates a channel matrix which can be used for ICI cancellation. Experiment results show that the proposed method can effectively suppress the ICI effects induced by the time variant channels and reduce the error floor of bit error rate (BER).

Abstract:An interchannel interference(ICI) cancellation method was developed for time-domain synchronous orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing(TDS-OFDM) systems using a system transfer model derived for TDS-OFDM.The ICI cancellation method uses decision feed back based on the assumption that channel variations are linear within an OFDM block.Coarse channel estimates are based on a time-domain correlation of a pseudo-random number(PN) sequence with linear interpolation for the fine channel estimates over an OFDM block.Simulation results show that the method gives a bit error rate performance improvement of above 2 dB with comparative computational complexity against conventional methods used in TDS-OFDM systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we present and analyze an interference avoidance scheme for OFDM cognitive radio systems. From an active suppression point of view, it effectively prevents the negative effect of intercarrier interference that a cognitive radio may inflict on primary transmission due to frequency offset. At the same time, it ensures bandwidth efficiency of secondary transmission. Based on the least square error criterion, it is robust to frequency offset estimation error and has a low computational complexity. Furthermore, its generalized form and algorithm can simply adapt to different frequency offsets and be extended to multiple users' case. Simulation results show the enhanced performance of our proposed scheme, which greatly reduces the interference power in comparison with the passive tone null scheme.

Abstract:For orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems, the frequency offsets in mobile radio channels distort the orthogonality between subcarriers resulting in intercarrier interference (ICI), This paper studies an efficient ICI cancellation method termed ICI self-cancellation scheme. The scheme works in two very simple steps. At the transmitter side, one data symbol is modulated onto a group of adjacent subcarriers with a group of weighting coefficients. The weighting coefficients are designed so that the ICI caused by the channel frequency errors can be minimized. At the receiver side, by linearly combining the received signals on these subcarriers with proposed coefficients, the residual ICI contained in the received signals can then be further reduced. The carrier-to-interference power ratio (CIR) can be increased by 15 and 30 dB when the group size is two or three, respectively, for a channel with a constant frequency offset. Although the redundant modulation causes a reduction in bandwidth efficiency, it can be compensated, for example, by using larger signal alphabet sizes. Simulations show that OFDM systems using the proposed ICI self-cancellation scheme perform much better than standard systems while having the same bandwidth efficiency in multipath mobile radio channels with large Doppler frequencies.

Abstract:For orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems, the frequency offsets in mobile radio channels distort the orthogonality between subcarriers, resulting in inter-carrier interference (ICI), which seriously degrades the performance of systems. Based on ICI coefficients analysis and reasonable estimation of the frequency offset, the paper presents a novel decorrelation interference cancellation method with the use of frequency-domain equalization at the receiver. Without the iterative operation on the weighting coefficients and the inverse operation on the matrix, ICI can be eliminated by directly using the cyclic embedding algorithm of the Toeplitz matrix in terms of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT). Compared with conventional frequency-domain equalization, this new scheme has better convergence reliability and lower computational complexity. Simulation results show that an OFDM system using the proposed ICI cancellation scheme can effectively eliminate ICI, have significant performance improvement and mitigate the effects of OFDM communication systems. The scheme works very well in the multipath radio channel and high-speed mobile environment.

Abstract:The paper studies an efficient ICI cancellation method termed segment equalization scheme. According to the time-variant nature of the mobile channel, the received OFDM signal and channel impulse response (CIR) are divided into many segments before FFT, then all the segments are equalized in the frequency-domain, the results are summed to demodulate the OFDM signal. Simulations and performance analysis show that an OFDM system using the proposed segment equalization can effectively reduce the ICI caused by the frequency offset and large Doppler frequencies in mobile radio channels.

Abstract:In an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, the performance is sensitive to the carrier frequency offset (CFO). This CFO will destroy the orthogonality between the subcarriers and cause intercarrier interference (Id), which not only reduces the carrier to interference power ratio (CIR), but also leads to a phase rotation of the desired signal. In existing ICI cancellation schemes, the discussion is mainly about CIR improvement, leaving the equally important phase rotation error (PRE) not considered. In this paper, ICI mechanism and polynomial cancellation coding (PCC) scheme is studied. We proposed a simple ICI cancellation scheme which can improve both CIR and PRE. Simulations show the proposed algorithm considerably outperforms the PCC scheme in the presence of large CFO. Especially, in lower signal to noise ratio (SNR) environment, the performance degradation using the proposed algorithm could be still within an acceptable range.

Abstract:High-mobility orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM)systems suffered severe inter-carrier interference(ICI)from Doppler spreading.On the basis of the characteristics of wireless propagation in practical scenarios,a method which employed the WINNER Ⅱ channel model to represent the practical wireless channel and an antenna array as the receiver to eliminate ICI in space-domain was proposed.The direction of arrival estimation algorithm and the beamforming network were used to separate the received signals in space-domain.Multi-beam diversity gain was obtained finally by means of combining the signals which have been compensated for Doppler frequency shifts(DFS)respectively.Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method not only effectively reduces ICI and the error floors,but also obtains a 5～7 dB signal-to-interference gain over systems without use of the proposed method.

Abstract:Recently, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been considered as an irreplaceable and reliable technology. However, it is vulnerable to the frequency offsets, which may potentially cause intercarrier interference (ICI). Hence, in this paper, a general and efficient ICI self-cancellation scheme is proposed toward higher transmission efficiency. The scheme maps the data symbols to different subcarrier positions with the aid of scrambler or interleaver, so more adjacent subcarriers contribute to interference cancellation. The simulation in comparison to standard OFDM system demonstrates that the advantages offered by the presented scheme in the case of frequency offsets with no compromise in the attainable bit error rate (BER) performance.

Abstract:In orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, time variation of multipath channels over an OFDM block period leads to a loss of orthogonality among subcarriers, resulting in intercarrier interference (ICI). In this paper, based on the analysis of the symbol energy distribution and the ICI generation mechanism, we propose a low-complexity partial minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) with successive detection (PMMSESD) scheme in frequency domain to mitigate ICI caused by time-varying channels. Each time, the proposed method detects the symbol with the largest received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) among all the undetected symbols, using an MMSE detector only considering the interference of several neighborhood subcarriers. Analysis and simulation results show that our PMMSESD method can effectively reduce the ICI with low computational complexity, it outperforms the MMSE method at relatively high Eb/N0 , and its performance is close to the MMSE with successive detection (MMSESD) method in the relatively low Doppler frequency region

Abstract:MIMO-OFDM is widely considered as a promising framework of the future broadband mobile communication systems due to its prominent advantages such as high spectral efficiency, low-complexity equalization for multi-path fading, and sufficient exploiting of the spatial degree of freedom. However, an inherent drawback of OFDM, i.e., high sensitivity to frequency offset, limits the application scenarios of MIMO-OFDM significantly. This paper proposes an enhanced MIMO-OFDM scheme, termed double-polarized SFBC-OFDM (DP-SFBC-OFDM), which can improve the robustness to frequency offset with only very low complexity increase at the receiver. Simulation results show that even for very large frequency offset, the system only has limited performance degradation (e.g., normalized frequency offset of 0.4 only lead to performance loss of smaller than 1dB for 64QAM for the proposed scheme while ordinary transmission scheme totally collapse in this case).

Abstract:Index modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (IM-OFDM) is a newly proposed technique, which achieves significantly improved error performance and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in comparison with classical OFDM due to the activation of partial subcarriers. However, in the presence of inter-carrier interference (ICI), error detection of the subcarrier indices may easily occur, such that the performance of IM-OFDM is severely degraded and can be even worse than classical OFDM. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose to tailor the ideas of classical ICI self-cancellation and two-path cancellation to IM-OFDM with two mapping methods, i.e., symmetric mapping and mirror mapping. Thanks to the joint design of the grouping and mapping methods, the proposed schemes inherit the IM-OFDM virtue of partially activated subcarriers but with reduced ICI. Monte Carlo Simulations validate that the proposed schemes significantly outperform conventional OFDM with ICI cancellation in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels with frequency deviation without sacrifice of the spectral efficiency and increase of the computational complexity.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) techniques are attractive for underwater acoustic (UWA) communications due to their robustness against large multipath spread. However, OFDM systems in UWA channels suffer from intercarrier interference (ICI) caused by the Doppler effect. In this paper, we propose an effective mirror-mapping-based ICI self-cancellation method in OFDM UWA communications. Theoretical analyses and numerical results show that the proposed mirror-mapping-based ICI self-cancellation schemes can effectively reduce the carrier-to-interference power ratio (CIR) in comparison with the plain OFDM scheme in the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with carrier frequency offset (CFO). To demonstrate their benefits for OFDM UWA communications, the mirror-mapping-based ICI self-cancellation schemes were tested in a recent sea experiment, conducted in Taiwan in May 2013. The decoding results show that the mirror-mapping-based ICI self-cancellation schemes improve the BER performance of the OFDM system considerably in UWA channels.

Abstract:We propose a novel ICI cancellation using opposite weighting on symmetric subcarrier pairs to combat the linear phase noise of laser source and the nonlinear phase noise resulted from the fiber nonlinearity. We compare the proposed ICI cancellation scheme with conventional OFDM and the ICI self-cancellation at the same raw bit rate of 35.6 Gb/s. In simulations, the proposed ICI cancellation scheme shows better phase noise tolerance compared with conventional OFDM and has similar phase noise tolerance with the ICI self-cancellation. The laser linewidth is about 13 MHz at BER of 2 x 10(-3) with ICI cancellation scheme while it is 5 MHz in conventional OFDM. We also study the nonlinearity tolerance and find that the proposed ICI cancellation scheme is better compared with the other two schemes which due to the first order nonlinearity mitigation. The launch power is 7 dBm for the proposed ICI cancellation scheme and its SNR improves by 4 dB or 3 dB compared with the ICI self-cancellation or conventional OFDM at BER of 1.1 x 10(-3), respectively.
