Abstract:Schemes integrating inter-carrier interference (ICI) self-cancellation and common phase error (CPE) compensation for coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems are investigated. The purpose of our research is to counteract the impacts of laser phase noise and fiber nonlinearity. We propose two ICI self-cancellation-based CO-OFDM schemes, and adopt a pilot-aided decision feedback (DFB) loop for CPE compensation. The proposed schemes are compared with conventional CO-OFDM schemes at the same spectral efficiency. Simulations show that our schemes can not only enhance laser linewidth tolerance of the CO-OFDM system, but also present strong robustness against fiber nonlinearity.

Abstract:For orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems, the frequency offsets in mobile radio channels distort the orthogonality between subcarriers resulting in intercarrier interference (ICI), This paper studies an efficient ICI cancellation method termed ICI self-cancellation scheme. The scheme works in two very simple steps. At the transmitter side, one data symbol is modulated onto a group of adjacent subcarriers with a group of weighting coefficients. The weighting coefficients are designed so that the ICI caused by the channel frequency errors can be minimized. At the receiver side, by linearly combining the received signals on these subcarriers with proposed coefficients, the residual ICI contained in the received signals can then be further reduced. The carrier-to-interference power ratio (CIR) can be increased by 15 and 30 dB when the group size is two or three, respectively, for a channel with a constant frequency offset. Although the redundant modulation causes a reduction in bandwidth efficiency, it can be compensated, for example, by using larger signal alphabet sizes. Simulations show that OFDM systems using the proposed ICI self-cancellation scheme perform much better than standard systems while having the same bandwidth efficiency in multipath mobile radio channels with large Doppler frequencies.

Abstract:The implementation of OFDM system suffers from the effect of phase noise generated by local oscillator (LO), which disturbs the orthogonality between subcarriers and causes intercarrier interference (ICI). In this paper, the symmetric conjugate-negative property of the ICI weighting function is found. Based on that, the ICI self-cancellation of symmetric data-conjugate method is studied to suppress phase noise. The carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR) improvement by this method is shown to be larger than 22 dB in flat fading channel. For a BER of 10-3, this method can tolerate a phase noise standard deviation of 7 deg in flat fading channel. Moreover, this method could offer frequency diversity gain in frequency selective channels. Both analytical and numerical results show that this method outperforms the conventional schemes

In frequency domain, the received signal can be formulated as the circular convolution of the transmitted signal and the ICI weighting function. In this paper, the symmetric conjugate property of the ICI weighting function is investigated. Based on that, the ICI self-cancellation of symmetric data-conjugate method is studied to suppress PHN. A new ICI cancelling demodulation (ICD) scheme with frequency diversity combining is proposed. Under flat fading channel, the carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR) improvement from this proposed method is larger than 22 dB, and can tolerate a phase noise with standard deviation of 7 deg when BER is 10(-3). In frequency selective fading channel, the proposed method is shown to be able to offer significant diversity gain.

Abstract:It is well known that the intercarrier interference (ICI) caused by the frequency offset may significantly degrade the system performance. Conventional ICI self-cancellation schemes can mitigate the ICI effect dramatically without doing frequency offset compensation, but the expense of halving spectral efficiency makes them less valuable. On the other hand, ICI can be suppressed by performing correlative coding in the frequency domain without halving spectral efficiency; however, this scheme usually cannot provide satisfactory performance in terms of the carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR) and the detection errors generated in the receiver would be propagated through OFDM symbols. It proposes an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system over frequency selective time-varying fading channels. As the symbol duration increases, OFDM is robust to channel multipath dispersion. Based on the assumption, the proposed method solves the linear channel parameters of each path and creates a channel matrix which can be used for ICI cancellation. Experiment results show that the proposed method can effectively suppress the ICI effects induced by the time variant channels and reduce the error floor of bit error rate (BER).

Abstract:The standard carrier interferometry orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(CI-OFDM) cannot effectively handle the Doppler spread in high-speed mobile environments.This paper describes an enhanced CI-OFDM(ECI-OFDM) to improve system performance in high-speed mobile environments up to 300 km/h.A cyclic prefix and a self-cancellation scheme are employed in the frequency domain using periodic expanded CI codes to cancel the inter-carrier-interference(ICI) caused by the Doppler spread.Theory analyses and simulations show that the maximum speed supported by the system is nearly double that of the standard system.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) techniques are attractive for underwater acoustic (UWA) communications due to their robustness against large multipath spread. However, OFDM systems in UWA channels suffer from intercarrier interference (ICI) caused by the Doppler effect. In this paper, we propose an effective mirror-mapping-based ICI self-cancellation method in OFDM UWA communications. Theoretical analyses and numerical results show that the proposed mirror-mapping-based ICI self-cancellation schemes can effectively reduce the carrier-to-interference power ratio (CIR) in comparison with the plain OFDM scheme in the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with carrier frequency offset (CFO). To demonstrate their benefits for OFDM UWA communications, the mirror-mapping-based ICI self-cancellation schemes were tested in a recent sea experiment, conducted in Taiwan in May 2013. The decoding results show that the mirror-mapping-based ICI self-cancellation schemes improve the BER performance of the OFDM system considerably in UWA channels.

Abstract:The invention provides an OFDM system inter-subcarrier interference self-elimination method. The method comprises the steps that: 1. all subcarriers in an OFDM system are divided into groups, a certain number of subcarrier pairs are selected from each group and are activated, and information is modulated to the activated subcarriers; 2. ICI interference self-elimination modulation is carried out for each pair of subcarriers in the system; 3. after modulation, all subcarrier pairs are arranged at a transmitting terminal in a distributive mode; 4. the ICI interference self-elimination modulation is carried out for each pair of subcarriers at a receiving terminal; 5. all subcarrier pairs in the system are restored to the original arrangement in a centralized mode; 6. activation state inspection is carried out for each group of subcarriers by means of the maximum likelihood rule and data on the subcarriers are modulated and activated. Based on the OFDM system inter-subcarrier interference self-elimination method, compared with an ICI interference self-elimination scheme and an IM-OFDM scheme, a better ICI suppression effect can be achieved on the condition that the system complexity is not increased.

Abstract:Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems may suffer from both carrier frequency offset (CFO) and in-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) imbalance at the receiver front end. In this paper, a novel type of intercarrier interference (ICI) self-cancellation method using mirror mapping is proposed to combat these impairment. Based on the proposed novel method and by adopting two widely used mapping operations, we altogether derive two different mirror mapping schemes. Analysis and simulation results verify that the proposed mirror mapping schemes not only inherit the efficiency of the existing self-cancellation schemes in suppressing ICI caused by CFO but also have the ability of compressing or even eliminating IQ imbalance.

Abstract:Index modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (IM-OFDM) is a newly proposed technique, which achieves significantly improved error performance and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in comparison with classical OFDM due to the activation of partial subcarriers. However, in the presence of inter-carrier interference (ICI), error detection of the subcarrier indices may easily occur, such that the performance of IM-OFDM is severely degraded and can be even worse than classical OFDM. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose to tailor the ideas of classical ICI self-cancellation and two-path cancellation to IM-OFDM with two mapping methods, i.e., symmetric mapping and mirror mapping. Thanks to the joint design of the grouping and mapping methods, the proposed schemes inherit the IM-OFDM virtue of partially activated subcarriers but with reduced ICI. Monte Carlo Simulations validate that the proposed schemes significantly outperform conventional OFDM with ICI cancellation in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels with frequency deviation without sacrifice of the spectral efficiency and increase of the computational complexity.
Index Modulated OFDM with ICI Self-Cancellation for V2X Communications.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), which urgently call for highly reliable and effective communication technologies for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2X) applications. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is widely believed to be the most promising candidate among these applications. However, the orthogonality of subcarriers in OFDM can be easily destroyed by the Doppler-induced inter-carrier interference (ICI), which is very common in V2X channels. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme which integrates the ICI self-cancellation technique into the index modulated (IM-) OFDM framework. Via careful designs, the proposed scheme can not only inherit the advantages of IM-OFDM but also suppress the ICI from active subcarriers. Simulations validate that in V2X channels, the proposed scheme significantly outperforms existing IM-OFDM and more importantly shows better performance than the conventional OFDM with ICI self-cancellation without sacrificing the spectral efficiency.

Abstract:In this paper, we present and analyze an interference avoidance scheme for OFDM cognitive radio systems. From an active suppression point of view, it effectively prevents the negative effect of intercarrier interference that a cognitive radio may inflict on primary transmission due to frequency offset. At the same time, it ensures bandwidth efficiency of secondary transmission. Based on the least square error criterion, it is robust to frequency offset estimation error and has a low computational complexity. Furthermore, its generalized form and algorithm can simply adapt to different frequency offsets and be extended to multiple users' case. Simulation results show the enhanced performance of our proposed scheme, which greatly reduces the interference power in comparison with the passive tone null scheme.

Abstract:In an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, the performance is sensitive to the carrier frequency offset (CFO). This CFO will destroy the orthogonality between the subcarriers and cause intercarrier interference (Id), which not only reduces the carrier to interference power ratio (CIR), but also leads to a phase rotation of the desired signal. In existing ICI cancellation schemes, the discussion is mainly about CIR improvement, leaving the equally important phase rotation error (PRE) not considered. In this paper, ICI mechanism and polynomial cancellation coding (PCC) scheme is studied. We proposed a simple ICI cancellation scheme which can improve both CIR and PRE. Simulations show the proposed algorithm considerably outperforms the PCC scheme in the presence of large CFO. Especially, in lower signal to noise ratio (SNR) environment, the performance degradation using the proposed algorithm could be still within an acceptable range.

Abstract:Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has recently been used widely in wireless communication systems. OFDM is very effective in combating intersymbol interference and can achieve high data rate in frequency selective channel. For OFDM communication systems, the frequency offsets in mobile radio channels distort the orthogonality between subcarriers resulting in Inter Carrier Interference (ICI). ICI causes power leakage among subcarriers thus degrading the system performance. A wellknown problem of OFDM is its sensitivity to frequency offset between the transmitted and received carrier frequencies. There are two deleterious effects caused by frequency offset one is the reduction of signal amplitude in the output of the filters matched to each of the carriers and the second is introduction of ICI from the other carriers. This research work investigates three effective methods for combating the effects of ICI: ICI Self Cancellation (SC), Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimation, and Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) method. These three methods are compared in terms of bit error rate performance and bandwidth efficiency. Through simulations, it is shown that the three techniques are effective in mitigating the modulation schemes, the ML and EKF methods perform better than the SC method.

Abstract:As one of the most important components of the wideband wireless access technique, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has a high usage rate of spectrum and combats inter-symbol interference (ISI) in multi-path fading channel. However, when there are frequency offsets during the signal transmission, the inter-carrier interference (ICI) is introduced, which significantly degrades the performance. The existing ICI self-cancellation schemes such as PCC-OFDM are not optimum to minimize the interference considering both noise and ICI. In this paper, a new metric named SINR (signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio) is proposed. We discuss the optimization issue when a constant frequency offset exists and in time-varying channels. The optimum weighting-coefficient-pair (OWCP) is obtained, which maximizes SINR theoretically through the alternant iteration algorithm. Simulations show that the performance of OWCP-OFDM is better than that of PCC-OFDM, especially when the frequency offset is large. Although the ICI self-cancellation scheme suffers bandwidth inefficiency, from the simulation results we can also see that the performance of OWCP-OFDM is much better than that of the standard OFDM systems with the same bandwidth efficiency when a frequency offset exists. Moreover, since the redundant modulation provides the capability to suppress ICI as well as a receiving SNR gain, it can be considered as exchanging the bandwidth for SNR.

Abstract:In order to further improve the laser phase noise tolerance of coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems, an iterative phase noise suppression algorithm is proposed in this paper, which is powerful in mitigating the laser phase noise induced intercarrier interference (ICI) even when laser linewidth achieves 2 MHz. Compared with the existing ICI suppression method, the performance gain brought by the proposal is significant when the laser linewidth is larger than 1.5 MHz. The BER floor which can not be avoided by using the existing phase noise suppression methods can be reduced effectively by employing the new iterative algorithm.

Abstract:Digital coherent orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical network (OFDM-PON) is a strong candidate for the 2nd-stage-next-generation PON (NG-PON2). However, as an OFDM system, especially for long-symbol duration OFDM system, it is very sensitive to laser phase noise. The common phase error (CPE) and intercarrier interference (ICI) caused by the laser phase noise severely cut down the performance of the coherent OFDM-PON. To correct the phase noise as well as guarantee high spectral efficiency, in this letter, we propose an advanced pseudo pilot-aided orthogonal basis expansion-based (A-PS-OBE) blind ICI suppression method over both constant and nonconstant modulus modulation, and deployed it in coherent optical time division multiplexing (TDM) OFDM-PON. The numerical results demonstrate the A-PS-OBE method can make the application of the cost-effective lasers possible in the coherent TDM-OFDM-PON and high-order modulation can also be adopted though the laser linewidth is large to 700 kHz.

Abstract:An optical phase noise suppression algorithm, LI-SCPEC, based on phase linear interpolation and sub-symbol processing is proposed for CO-OFDM system. By increasing the temporal resolution of carrier phase tracking through dividing one symbol into several sub-blocks, i.e., sub-symbols, inter-carrier-interference (ICI) mitigation is achieved in the proposed algorithm. Linear interpolation is employed to obtain a reliable temporal reference for sub-symbol phase estimation. The new algorithm, with only a few number of sub-symbols (N-B = 4), can provide a considerably larger laser linewidth tolerance than several other ICI mitigation algorithms as demonstrated by Monte-Carlo simulations. Numerical analysis verifies that the best performance is achieved with an optimal and moderate number of sub-symbols. Complexity analysis shows that the required number of complex-valued multiplications is independent of the number of sub-symbols used in the proposed algorithm. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:MIMO-OFDM is widely considered as a promising framework of the future broadband mobile communication systems due to its prominent advantages such as high spectral efficiency, low-complexity equalization for multi-path fading, and sufficient exploiting of the spatial degree of freedom. However, an inherent drawback of OFDM, i.e., high sensitivity to frequency offset, limits the application scenarios of MIMO-OFDM significantly. This paper proposes an enhanced MIMO-OFDM scheme, termed double-polarized SFBC-OFDM (DP-SFBC-OFDM), which can improve the robustness to frequency offset with only very low complexity increase at the receiver. Simulation results show that even for very large frequency offset, the system only has limited performance degradation (e.g., normalized frequency offset of 0.4 only lead to performance loss of smaller than 1dB for 64QAM for the proposed scheme while ordinary transmission scheme totally collapse in this case).
