Abstract:Metal-organic complex (MOC) multilayers are, for the first time, conformally constructed on Ni foam (NF) via a three-component sequential layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly approach and converted to three-dimensional (3-D) NF-supported interconnected CoO nanoparticles (NPs)/N-doped carbon nanohybrid multilayers via calcination. The obtained nanoarchitecture delivers an overpotential of 318 mV to achieve 10 mA cm(-2) and a Tafel slope of 46.1 mV dec(-1). This activity is superior to most reported oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, and even much better than those of Ir- and Ru-based ones measured under the same conditions (0.1 M KOH). Additionally, this electrode undergoes negligible potential and current change after 19.8 h chronopotentiometric measurement and 300 cyclic voltammetry cycles. The outstanding catalytic performance is mainly attributed to the ultrasmall and high-density CoO NPs embedded in Ndoped carbon uniformly assembled on the 3-D substrate significantly increasing electrochemically accessible active sites and durability and the N-doped carbon greatly promoting intrinsic activity of CoO. This work not only creates 3-D highly tunable networked nanostructured electrodes with excellent durability for high-efficiency electrocatalysis but also develops a facile, economical, and extremely versatile strategy to controllably self-assemble conformal MOC-based multilayers with multifunctionality and superior performance on essentially any substrate at the molecular level for broad applications.

Abstract:It is highly desirable to design and develop earth-abundant electrocatalysts for efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions. In this communication, we demonstrate the development of CaMoO4 nanosheet arrays on nickel foam (CaMoO4/NF) as a durable high-performance non-noble-metal electrocatalyst for the OER. CaMoO4/NF shows high catalytic activity and needs an overpotential of only 345 mV to attain a geometrical catalytic current density of 50 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH. Notably, it also shows high long-term electrochemical durability for at least 25 h.

Abstract:It's highly desirable to devise and develop non‐precious metal catalysts for efficient water oxidation catalysis in alkaline solution. Herein, we report Co‐MOF nanosheet arrays grown on the three dimensional conductive nickel foam (Co‐MOF/NF) through a hydro‐thermal process for efficient alkaline oxygen evolution electrocatalysis. Such catalyst displays an excellent electrochemical performance by achieving an overpotential of 290 mV at 20 mA cm –2 in 1.0 M KOH. Besides, it possesses both a good electrochemical stability and a high turnover frequency of 0.14 s –1 at the overpotential of 400 mV.

Abstract:Energy conversion and storage systems such as water splitting metal-air batteries require high-performance and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. Herein, we report the in situ development of self-standing Co3O4 nanorods array on Co foil (Co3O4 NA/CF) as a 1D OER catalyst electrode. Such Co3O4 NA/CF only needs overpotential of 308 mV to drive a geometrical catalytic current density of 15 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH with good long-term electrochemical durability. In addition, this catalyst achieves a high turnover frequency of 0.646 mol O2 s-1 at overpotential of 410 mV.

Abstract:The rational design of cost-effective and highly efficient catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is vastly desirable for advanced renewable energy conversion and storage systems. Tailoring the composition and architecture of electrocatalysts is a reliable approach for improving their catalytic performance. Herein, we developed hierarchical ultra-thin Co nanosheets coupled with N-doped carbon plate (Co-NS@NCP) as an efficient OER catalyst through a feasible and easily scalable NaCl template method. The rapid dissolution-recrystallization-carbonization synthesis process allows Co nanosheets to self-assemble into plenty of secondary building units and to distribute uniformly on N-doped carbon plate. Benefitting from the vertically aligned Co nanosheet arrays and hierarchical architecture, the obtained Co-NS@NCP possess an extremely high specific surface area up to 446.49 m 2 g −1 , which provides sufficient exposed active sites, excellent structure stability, and multidimensional mass transfer channels. Thus, the Co-NS@NCP affords remarkable electrocatalytic performance for OER in an alkaline medium with a low overpotential of only 278 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a small Tafel slope, as well as robust electrocatalytic stability for long-term electrolysis operation. The present findings here emphasize a rational and promising perspective for designing high-efficiency non-precious electrocatalysts for the OER process and sustainable energy storage and conversion system.

Abstract:Due to the depletion of fossil energy on earth, it is crucial to develop resource rich and efficient non-precious metal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we synthesized an efficient and economical electrocatalyst using a simple self-assembly strategy. Firstly, rod-shaped MIL-88A was synthesized by hydrothermal method. Then, the surface of MIL-88A was functionalized and encapsulated in zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) by hydrothermal method. The combination of MIL-88A and ZIF-67 resulted in a slight ion-exchange reaction between Co 2+ and the surface of MIL-88A to generate CoFe-LDH@ZIF-67 core–shell structure. Afterwards, in the presence of Mo 6+ , ZIF-67 was converted into CoMo-nanocages through ion-exchange reactions, forming a core–shell structure of MoCoFe hydr (oxy) oxide@CoMo-LDH (MoCoFe-HO@CoMo-LDH). Due to the advantages of core–shell structure and composition, this material exhibits excellent OER characteristics, with a small Tafel slope (45.11 mV dec -1 ) and low overpotential (324 mV) at 10 mA cm −2 . It exhibits good stability in alkaline media. This research work provides a novel approach for the development of efficient and economical non-precious metal electrocatalysts.

Abstract:It is of great significance to develop high-efficiency and low-cost electrocatalysts towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their critical role in the electrochemical water splitting to produce H2 fuel. Herein, a well-controlled hierarchical structured bimetallic electrocatalyst of Co3O4@Ni2P-CoP/NF is constructed via phosphating and carbonating Co3O4 nanowires template-directed fabrication Ni-substituted ZIF-67 arrays onto a 3D Ni foam substrate. The as-obtained hierarchical structured nanomaterial displays superior electrocatalytic performance with a small overpotential of 298 mV required to achieve the current density of 50 mA cm−2 and reveals high electrocatalytic activity with long-term durability after continuously working for 40 h in 1.0 M KOH. The good performance of the material for OER can be attributed to the synergistic effect of optimized hierarchical structure, partial substitution of Ni for Co, high porosity and N, P-codoping.
Cobalt-Nanoparticle-Decorated Cobalt–Molybdenum Bimetal Oxides Embedded in Flower-like N-Doped Carbon as a Durable and Efficient Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The development of high-efficiency and cost-efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is a core issue in the sector of water electrolysis. Cobalt–molybdenum bimetal oxide (Co2Mo3O8), as a kind of non-noble transition-metal oxides, is broadly employed as a good OER catalyst due to its abundant active sites. However, the relatively low conductivity of Co2Mo3O8 limits further improvement in its electrocatalytic performance. Herein, the cobalt nanoparticle-modified Co2Mo3O8 flakes are embedded into the flower-like N-doped carbon (NC) microspheres to effectively improve the electrocatalytic OER performance. The combination of Co2Mo3O8 and NC with a flower-like structure effectively improves the conductivity of the material while enhancing the electrolyte penetration. More importantly, the Co nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of Co2Mo3O8 flakes have the capability to furnish more active electrocatalytic active sites. The obtained Co NP-modified Co2Mo3O8 embedded flower-like NC microspheres (Co/Co2Mo3O8@NC) exhibited an overpotential of 288 mV at 10 mA·cm–2, which was relatively low in comparison to that of commercial RuO2. Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting is deemed to be an environmentally friendly methodology for hydrogen and oxygen in various electrochemical systems. The electrocatalyst has a strong relationship with the performance of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, Co3O4 nanopolyhedrons (Co3O4 NPs) and Co3O4 nanopolyhedrons with N-doped carbon (Co3O4 NPs-NC) were obtained by changing the pyrolysis temperature using ZIF-67 as the precursor template. Due to the poor conductivity of cobalt-based oxides, the introduction of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) significantly increased the electron transfer rate of the Co3O4 polyhedron, the Co3O4 NPs-NC/CNTs exhibited outstanding activity as a catalyst in OER. The reason for the favorable catalytic capability of this catalyst is that the Co3O4 NPs-NC with dodecahedral structure can supply abundant active sites, and its plentiful mesoporous structure can facilitate the adsorption of reactants and desorption of products. Therefore, the Co3O4 NPs-NC/CNTs composite with excellent electrochemical activity has broad application prospects as a promising catalyst.Graphical AbstractThe excellent OER performance of Co3O4 NPs-NC/CNTs is attributed to having a polyhedral structure that replicates the ZIF-67 morphology and its rich mesoporous structure, which can provide more effective active sites.

Abstract:Developing highly active oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is crucial and highly desirable to improve the efficiency of water electrolysis for H2 fuel generation. In this work, hierarchical MoO4 2– intercalating α-Co(OH)2 nanosheet assemblies were synthesized from the readily available metal source and 2-methylimidazole as the alkaline reagent by green and fast coprecipitation. The ultrathin α-Co(OH)2-MoO4(25) nanosheets possess a lateral size of about 40–100 nm and a thickness from 2.5 to 4.6 nm (3 to 6 layers). Triggered by OER oxidation treatment, the α-Co(OH)2-MoO4(25) material undergoes ultrafast and thorough structure reconstruction to CoOOH(25) by only one linear sweep voltammetry scan and chronopotentiometry within 35 s. The in situ transformation leads to the formation of the CoOOH active phase with rich oxygen vacancies and distorted structure, extracting MoO4 2– ions at the same time. Compared with other designed counterparts, CoOOH(25) offers a lower overpotential (309 mV) for the OER at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 and a smaller Tafel slope of only 57.78 mV dec–1, representing an excellent unary CoOOH-based or Co(OH)2-based catalyst. The improved catalytic activity of CoOOH(25) can be attributed to its specific structures, e.g., ultrathin disordered nanosheets that could facilitate electrolyte transportation and expose more active sites, oxygen vacancies that enhance the intrinsic per-site activity, and their synergistic effect. This established structure self-renewal technology might also be expanded to other advanced nanomaterials toward other electrochemical energy conversion processes.

Abstract:Finding reservoir-rich and efficient electrocatalysts for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for further sustainable energy development. Despite the advantages of high earth abundance, easy availability, and tunable composition, transition-metal oxides are typically considered poor electrocatalysts for the OER. In this study, a composite P-doped CoMoO4-Co3O4 hollow nanocage is deliberately synthesized through a cation-exchange, pyrolysis, and phosphorization approach using an innovative self-template strategy with ZIF-67 as the sacrificial template. Hollow nanocages provide large surface areas and abundant active sites, enhancing electron transfer. Hybridization with other components increases the number of electrochemically reactive sites and optimizes the advantages of different element components. As a result, the P-CoMoO4-Co3O4 hollow nanocage catalyst demonstrates high OER performance, with an overpotential of 279 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Additionally, P-CoMoO4-Co3O4 catalysts exhibit good dispersibility and excellent long-term stability. Experimental findings and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the phosphorus-doping effect in various aspects contributes significantly to the superior catalytic activity of P-CoMoO4-Co3O4. This work provides a valuable method for designing cost-effective P doped Co-based bimetal oxide catalysts with outstanding OER performance for industrial applications.

Abstract:Effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts composed of Earth-abundant transition metals are crucial for sustainable energy conversion and storage. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with tunable compositions are promising precursors for the fabrication of hollow and porous electrocatalysts. However, pulverous MOFs usually suffer from agglomeration during pyrolysis, greatly reducing the activity of their derived catalysts. In this work, Prussian blue analogue (PBA) arrays with hierarchical multidimensional architecture were directly grown on nickel foam (NF) using a template-oriented method. The subsequent calcination in air allowed for obtaining NixCo3-xO4 nanoplate arrays consisting of porous and hollow nanocubes. The derived bimetallic NixCo3-xO4/NF required only an overpotential of 287 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) in 1.0 M KOH solution, which is much lower than that of the monometallic NiO and the RuO2 benchmark. The 3D intersectional architecture of the NixCo3-xO4 nanoplates and the porous and hollow nanocube subunits contributed to the large specific surface area and reduced charge-transfer resistance of the NixCo3-xO4/NF electrode. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and post-OER characterization revealed that the incorporated Co was the active sites and electrochemical active CoOOH intermediates were in situ formed during the OER. Our study provides a facile and efficient strategy for the rational design of MOF-derived materials towards effective and low-cost electrocatalysis.
Constructing hollow nanocages of Co3O4-CoMoO4 heterostructure for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:Hollow nanocages composed of heterostructures play an important role in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their high electrocatalytic activity induced by the interfacial polarization within the interface of the heterostructure. In this work, ZIF-67 was used to synthesize Co3O4/CoMoO4 hollow nanocages (Co3O4/CoMoO4 HNC). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images verify that Co3O4/CoMoO4 HNC was composed of Co3O4/CoMoO4 heterostructures. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) characterizations show that the Mo 3d peaks of Co3O4/CoMoO4 are located at lower binding energy compared with CoMoO4, indicating charge transfer between Co3O4 and CoMoO4. The electrochemical studies show that Co3O4/CoMoO4 HNC exhibited excellent OER activity in an alkaline medium with only 248 mV overpotential required to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Co3O4/CoMoO4 HNC was tested as the anode material in a homemade water-splitting device to produce oxygen. The Co3O4/CoMoO4 HNC‖20 % Pt/C electrolytic cell shows equivalent performance to RuO2‖20 % Pt/C cell at 50 °C. The excellent OER performance of Co3O4/CoMoO4 HNC is attributed to the interfacial charge transfer between Co3O4 and CoMoO4 which promote the adsorption of OH−. Besides, the hollow nanocage structures provide a large surface area, leading to more active sites for OER.

Abstract:In this work, the hollow spherical Co2 composite with micro-nanostructure has been successfully obtained through phosphating the cobalt-based metal-organic framework (MOF), which was prepared by solvothermal method. The MOF-derived Co2 hollow spheres are characterized by power X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electrochemical measurements show that Co2 has a good performance with an overpotential of 328 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of only 57 mV dec−1. In addition, it is found that the composite has a minimum charge transfer resistance and a high long-term stability in alkaline solution.

Abstract:Efficient catalysts with low costs are very important for hydrogen production. In this work, a nanoporous CoMoP (np-CoMoP) bimetallic phosphide catalyst with a self-supporting structure was prepared by the electrochemical dealloying method. The introduction of Mo tuned the electronic structures around Co and P, optimized the desorption of the H atom, and improved the catalytic activity of cobalt phosphide. The prepared nanoporous Co65Mo15P20 (np-Co65Mo15P20) structures promoted electron transfer and provided more active sites, exhibiting superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance with the overpotential of 40.8 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and Tafel slope of 46.2 mV dec-1 in alkaline solution. Also, the catalysts exhibited good long-term stability.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) occurs at the anode in numerous electrochemical reactions and plays an important role due to the nature of proton-coupled electron transfer. However, the high voltage requirement and low stability of the OER dramatically limits the total energy converting efficiency. Recently, electrocatalysts based on multi-metal oxyhydroxides have been reported as excellent substitutes for commercial noble metal catalysts due to their outstanding OER activities. However, normal synthesis routes lead to either the encapsulation of excessively active sites or aggregation during the electrolysis. To this end, we design a novel core-shell structure integrating CoMoO4 as support frameworks covered with two-dimensional γ-FeOOH nanosheets on the surface. By involving CoMoO4, the electrochemically active surface area is significantly enhanced. Additionally, Co atoms immerge into the γ-FeOOH nanosheet, tuning its electronic structure and providing additional active sites. More importantly, the catalysts exhibit excellent OER catalytic performance, reducing overpotentials to merely 243.1 mV a versus 10 mA cm-2. The current strategy contributes to advancing the frontiers of new types of OER electrocatalysts by applying a proper support as a multi-functional platform.
Structural Regulation of a Multi‐Component Co2P2O7‐MoN/NC Electrocatalyst for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Realizing efficient and durable non‐precious metal‐based electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) still remains a great challenge. Here, a multi‐component composite of Co2P2O7‐MoN/NC containing pyrophosphate, nitride, and nitrogen‐doped carbon is successfully prepared via a facile two‐step synthesis method. Combining the structural regulation between the active metal‐ and non‐metal‐based species, Co2P2O7‐MoN/NC demonstrates superior activity and durability for OER, requiring an overpotential of 278 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, a Tafel slope of 83.3 mV dec−1, and long‐term stability over 100 h in an alkaline solution. Post‐characterizations reveal that synergistic effect among stable Co2P2O7, partially dissolved MoN, N‐doped carbon, and new‐formed CoOOH nanosheets enable structural reconstruction, fast charge transfer, and formation of oxygen‐containing intermediates, promoting the OER performance significantly. This work provides a promising pathway to tune multi‐components to fabricate efficient transition‐metal‐based electrocatalysts in energy conversion applications.

Abstract:The development of low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great importance for producing hydrogen via water splitting. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide an opportunity for the facile preparation of high-efficiency OER electrocatalysts. In this work, we prepared iron-doped nickel nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon microspheres (Fe-Ni@NC) with a unique hierarchical porous structure by directly pyrolyzing the MOF precursor for effectively boosting OER. The Fe doping has a significant enhancement effect on the catalytic performance. The optimized Fe (5%)-Ni@NC catalyst represents a remarkable activity with an overpotential of 257 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and superior stability toward OER in 1.0 M KOH.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective, active, and robust oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts in alkaline electrolytes is a critical problem in the efficient conversion of renewable energy resources. Here, 3D bicontinuous Mo-doped nanoporous NiFe oxide nanowires (Ni1.4Fe1.7Mo0.05O4) fabricated by eutectic solidification and two-step dealloying exhibit an efficient electrocatalytic OER performance. The resultant nanoporous catalyst can achieve an exceptional activity with a low overpotential (205 mV at 10 mA cm–2) and a small Tafel slope (51.3 mV dec–1), outperforming most of the NiFe-based benchmarks. X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculations reveals that strong coupling between the Mo–Fe(Ni)–O sites and its remarkable lattice contraction facilitate the electron transfer on the tiny ligament surface, where the high-valent Mo sites can absorb H2O molecules and lower the energy barrier of OOH* for adsorption and activation of H2O. Meanwhile, 1-D nanowire and 3-D bicontinuous nanoporous structures together with the optimized atom ratio of Fe and Ni can accelerate electron/ion transport in the OER process, thus further enhancing the OER performance.
