Abstract:The numerical scheme based on the hybrid application of the Laplace transform method and a control-volume formulation in conjunction with the hyperbolic shape functions is applied to investigate the hyperbolic heat conduction problems in an infinitely long layered solid cylinder with the nonlinear boundary conditions. In order to perform the Laplace transform method, the nonlinear boundary conditions are linearized with Taylor's series expansion. Results show that the present numerical scheme can overcome the mathematical difficulties induced by the nonlinear boundary conditions, the geometry, the composite interface and the singular point, and has stability and reliability for such problems. Effects of the thermal properties of two dissimilar materials on heat transfer are also discussed.

Abstract:Based on the governing equations of the thermo-elastic problem, the analytical layer-elements of a finite layer and an underlying half-space are obtained using the Laplace-Hankel transform and the characteristic value method. The cylindrical heat source is divided into several micro cylindrical heat sources, which can be approximately simulated by plane heat sources. Then, the global stiffness matrix for the problem is assembled and solved in the transformed domain, and a Laplace-Hankel transform inversion is taken to obtain the real solution. Finally, the influence of heat source types, division numbers, embedded depths and layered properties on the thermo-mechanical coupling response is investigated.

Abstract:An exact solution for three-dimensional thermo-hydro-mechanical responses of stratified saturated porothermoelastic material containing a heat source is derived in this paper. Starting with the governing equations of porothermoelastic materials in the Cartesian coordinates, analytical layer-elements of a finite layer and a half-space are obtained in the transformed domain with the aid of Laplace Fourier transform. The global stiffness matrix of a multi-layered system is assembled and solved in the transformed domain by considering the continuity conditions at adjacent layer interfaces and the boundary conditions. By introducing the inversion of Laplace Fourier transform, the actual solution in the physical domain is obtained. Finally, a numerical example is carried out to confirm the efficiency and accuracy of the present method, and then a series of numerical examples are performed to study the effects of heat source's half-life and shape, thermo-permeability ratio and stratified material properties on the responses of saturated porothermoelastic material. Abstract:An analytical solution is derived for the axisymmetric thermo-elastic problem of multilayered material with anisotropic thermal diffusivity due to a buried heat source. By applying the Laplace–Hankel transform to the state variables involved in the basic governing equations, the analytical layer-element which describes the relationship between the transformed generalized stresses and displacements is obtained. Considering the continuity conditions between adjacent layers and the boundary conditions, the global stiffness matrix for a multilayered system is assembled and solved in the transformed domain. The actual solutions of the problem in the physical domain are acquired by inverting the Laplace–Hankel transform. Finally, some numerical examples are given to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method and to illustrate the influences of the heat source’s types and the anisotropy of thermal diffusivity on the thermo-elastic response.

Abstract:This paper presents a precise solution to coupled thermohydromechanical problems of layered, transversely isotropic, saturated, porous media with a heat source or a temperature increment with the aid of integral transform techniques. On the basis of governing equations of three-dimensional (3D) coupled thermohydromechanical problems of saturated porous media, a standard differential matrix equation was deduced by using the Laplace-Fourier transform. In this paper, an extended precise-integration method for a layered system with an internal or surface load is introduced. It was used to solve the previous standard differential equation in the transformed domain. Real solutions in the physical domain were obtained by using the numerical inversion of the Laplace-Fourier transform. The precision of the presented theory was confirmed by two examples, and the effects of the anisotropic permeability and the transverse isotropic characteristics on the thermohydromechanical coupling behavior of layered saturated media are described.

Abstract:We develop a new numerical model based on a precise integration method to investigate the coupled thermo-mechanical performance of layered transversely isotropic media around a cylindrical/tubular heat source. To obtain the relational matrices of the extended precise integration method, we first convert the governing equations of the problem into ordinary differential matrix equations through the Laplace–Hankel transform. Then, the cylindrical heat source is divided into a series of plane heat sources, and the plane temperature load term is added to the state vector between layer elements. By combining the layer elements, we build a layered transversely isotropic numerical model containing a cylindrical heat source in the transformed domain. Finally, we solve the model in the transformed domain and obtain the solution of the problem in the real domain through the Laplace–Hankel transform inversion. The accuracy of this method is verified by comparing the solutions with the results of the analytical method and the finite element method. Then, we study the influence of the anisotropy of thermal parameters, the embedded depth, the length/radius ratio, the type of heat source and the stratification of the medium on the thermo-mechanical coupled performance.

Abstract:A sequential functional specification method was adopted to identify the surface heat flux in a two-dimensional inverse heat conduction problem for an orthotropic solid.The inverse problems were solved with the combination of the finite control volume method, the Newton-Raphson method, and the concept of future time step.The undetermined heat flux at each time step was denoted as one of the unknown variables in a set of nonlinear equations, which was solved by an iterative process.Results show that the estimated values agree well with the exact values in the examples, which proves that this method is an accurate, stable, and efficient one, thus it can be used to determine the surface heat flux in two-dimensional nonlinear inverse heat conduction problems.

Abstract:An analytical solution for the heat transfer in hollow cylinders with time-dependent boundary condition and time-dependent heat transfer coefficient at different surfaces is developed for the first time. The methodology is an extension of the shifting function method. By dividing the Biot function into a constant plus a function and introducing two specially chosen shifting functions, the system is transformed into a partial differential equation with homogenous boundary conditions only. The transformed system is thus solved by series expansion theorem. Limiting cases of the solution are studied and numerical results are compared with those in the literature. The convergence rate of the present solution is fast and the analytical solution is simple and accurate. Also, the influence of physical parameters on the temperature distribution of a hollow cylinder along the radial direction is investigated.

The Laplace transform method is used to remove the time-dependent terms in the governing differential equations and the boundary conditions, and then the transformed equations are discretized by the control volume scheme. The primary difficulty in dealing with the present problem is the suppression of numerical oscillations in the vicinity of sharp discontinuities. The results show that the numerical results agree well with the analytic solution and do not exhibit numerical oscillations in the vicinity of the jump discontinuity. The present method also can solve the problems with the singular point.

Abstract:The present work applies the hybrid method of the Laplace transform technique and a modified discretization scheme to analyze the non-linear hyperbolic heat conduction problems in a semi-infinite domain with either linearly or exponentially temperature-dependent thermal conductivity. The Laplace transform method is used to remove the time-dependent terms in the governing differential equation and the boundary conditions, and then the transformed equations are discretized by a modified discretization scheme. To show the rationality and reliability of the present results, a comparison between the present numerical results and those in the literature is made. Results show the behavior of hyperbolic heat conduction is sensitive to the function form of thermal conductivity. The speed of heat propagation changes for the variation of thermal conductivity.

Abstract:To accommodate the micro-structural effect, this work analyzes the heat transfer induced by a pulsed surface heating in a two-layered solid cylinder with the dual-phase-lag model. The interface thermal resistance is specified with the radiation boundary condition model. Due to the difference in the relaxation times between two dissimilar materials, the strong nonlinearity of the interfacial boundary condition, and the singularity at the center axis, it introduces the complexity and causes some mathematical difficulties to analyze the present problem. Thus a numerical scheme is developed. Results show the lagging thermal behavior is affected with the geometry effect and the interface thermal resistance and depends on the magnitude of the relaxation times more than the ratio value between the relaxation times. The microstructure effect would destroy the structure of thermal wave. The propagation speed of thermal wave is independent of the interface thermal resistance and the microstructure effect.

Abstract:The heat conduction induced by a pulsed volumetric source in a two-layered film is investigated with the dual-phase-lag model. An analytical method and a numerical scheme are used to solve the problem. The present numerical scheme is a hybrid application of the Laplace transform method and a control-volume formulation in conjunction with hyperbolic shape functions. Because of the difference in the relaxation times, tau(q) and tau(T), between two films, the interfacial boundary condition introduces complexity and causes some mathematical difficulties for solving the present problem directly in the temperature domain. To show the efficiency and accuracy of the present numerical scheme, comparison between the present numerical results, the analytical solution, and solutions in the literature is made. Theoretical insight to the dual-phase-lag heat conduction in two-layered films is given.

Abstract:The non-Fourier heat transfer model has gained significant attention in practical engineering applications , particularly under extreme conditions. However, solving the three-dimensional non-Fourier hyperbolic heat conduction equation remains a challenge. A method for solving the three-dimensional Maxwell-Cattaneo-Vernotte hyperbolic heat conduction equation on unstructured grids is proposed, where the total diffusion term is divided into normal diffusion term and cross diffusion term, and the temperature gradient is solved by reconstruction gradient. The convergence and accuracy of this method are verified by calculating the heat transfer process of a three-dimensional hollow cylinder, and the numerical solutions are found to be consistent with existing analytical solutions. Furthermore, the effects of relaxation time on the non-Fourier heat transfer process in three-dimensional hollow cylinder and complex ceramic part are discussed. Importantly, the method presented in this paper is not influenced by the coordinate system or the shape of the calculated region, providing a theoretical reference for solving complex three-dimensional non-Fourier heat transfer problems.

Abstract:Hyperbolic heat conduction problem is solved numerically. The explicit and implicit Euler schemes are constructed and investigated. It is shown that the implicit Euler scheme can be used to solve efficiently parabolic and hyperbolic heat conduction problems. This scheme is unconditionally stable for both problems. For many integration methods strong numerical oscillations are present, when the initial and boundary conditions are discontinuous for the hyperbolic problem. In order to regularize the implicit Euler scheme, a simple linear relation between time and space steps is proposed, which automatically introduces sufficient amount of numerical viscosity. Results of numerical experiments are presented.

Abstract:In this article, we propose a mathematical model for one-dimensional heat conduction in a three-layered solid considering that an interfacial condition is present for the temperature and heat flux conditions between the layers. The numerical approach is developed by constructing a finite difference scheme to solve the initial boundary–interface problem. The numerical scheme is designed by considering the accuracy of the model on the inner part of each layer, then extending to the interfaces and boundaries by incorporating the continuous interfacial conditions. The finite difference scheme is unconditionally stable, convergent, and easy to implement since it consists of the solution of two algebraic systems. We provide three numerical examples to confirm that our numerical approximation is consistent with the analytical solution and the physical phenomenon.

The model of the convective boundary condition is applied to specify the interface thermal resistance. The major difficulty encountered in the present problem is the numerical oscillations in the vicinity of the jump discontinuity, In order to evidence the accuracy of the present numerical method. a comparison between the present numerical results and the analytical solution is made. The results show that the present numerical method can suppress the numerical oscillations and the present numerical results agree well with the analytical solution. The propagation behavior of the thermal wave in the film and substrate composite depends, on the thermal property ratios of two dissimilar materials and the interface thermal resistance. The interface thermal resistance restricts the energy transmission across the interface of the film and substrate composite and alters the strength of the reflected and transmitted waves.

Abstract:The hyperbolic heat conduction equation is applied to investigate the rapid transient heat conduction in IC chip instead of the classical Fourier equation. The present study applies an analytical method and a hybrid numerical scheme of the Laplace transform technique and the control volume method in conjunction with the hyperbolic shape functions to investigate the present problem. For the numerical scheme, the Laplace transform method is used to remove the time-dependent terms in the governing differential equation and the boundary conditions, and then the transformed equations are discretized by the control volume scheme. The analytical solution is obtained from a simple mathematical analysis. In order to evidence the reliability and accuracy of the present results, a comparison between the present numerical results and the analytical solution is made. The results show that the present numerical results do not exhibit numerical oscillations in the vicinity of the jump discontinuity and agree well with the analytic solution. It can also be observed that the time derivative of the heat generation and the relaxation time play the important role in the present problem and the non-Fourier effects are significant only for short times.
Mathematical Model and Numerical Solution of the Heat Transfer Process in the Solid Adsorption System

Abstract:In this paper, a theoretical analysis of the heat transfer process in a adsorber model is developed. For transient heat conduction in the bed, the unsteadystate Fourier heat conduction equation is applied. Based on some assumptions, boundary conditions and the energy governing equation of the fluid in the cartridge heater are obtained. By the application of control volume approach and implicit central difference scheme, the heat conduction equation and the energy governing equation are discretized, and finite difference equations for the pillar adsorber are derived for simulative numerical solution by computer. In comparison with other calculation models, the boundary condition is dependent on time and tallied with the actual situation more, and the conjugated temperature field in the bed and tube is obtained.

Abstract:An asymptotic local solution to the axisymmetric conduction problem with a discontinuous temperature boundary condition in the radial direction is presented. The Laplace's equation in cylindrical coordinates (r, z) is expanded near the discontinuity at r = 1, z = 0. The leading order term arises from the step-change in the boundary condition. The next term reflects the effect of curvature at the position of the temperature discontinuity and is a particular solution to the Poisson's equation. Subsequent higher-order terms involve general solutions to the Laplace's equation in Cartesian coordinates and depend on conditions on the far end boundaries. Three domain sizes are thus considered: (i) infinite solid cylinder (0 <= r < infinity, 0 <= z < infinity); (ii) semi-infinite solid cylinder with finite radius (0 <= r <= a, 0 <= z < infinity); and (iii) finite solid cylinder (0 <= r <= a, 0 <= z <= a). Exact solutions for temperature in those three cases are used to determine the coefficients in the higher order terms of the asymptotic solution. As a result, a simple expression for local normal wall heat flux near the discontinuity is obtained and the accuracy is confirmed by comparing with the heat flux obtained through high order extrapolation of the exact temperature field near the wall. Abstract:A solid multi-layered concentric sphere with Gaussian space source is considered as the tissue model for magnetic hyperthermia treatment. The generalized dual-phase-lag model of bioheat transfer is used to describe the behavior of heat transport in tissue in the hyperthermia treatment process for accounting the local non-equilibrium effect. The effects of blood perfusion with the transient temperature are included in the tissue model. The hybrid numerical scheme based on Laplace transform, change of variables, and the modified discretization technique is extended to solve the present problem. The analytical solution for constant heat generation in the inner sphere is presented and evidences the accuracy and rationality of the present numerical results. In an ideal hyperthermia treatment, all the diseased tissues should be selectively heated without affecting any healthy tissue. Attempting to achieve the ideal temperature distribution, the thermal dose is estimated at the specified condition. The corresponding thermal efficacy of tumor damage has also been assessed based on the Arrenius equation.
