Abstract:This paper examines the behavioral and psychological factors influencing the adoption and use of mobile phone in rural China. Based on the diffusion of innovations and perceived needs theory, this research, through a case study of Hubei, China, supports the theoretical model that both behavioral and psychological factors can predict Chinese rural residents’ adoption and use of mobile phone. Psychological factors, however, play a weaker role in rural residents’ adoption and use of mobile phone than do behavioral factors. Moreover, behavioral factors can significantly predict some of the psychological factors. By adding behavioral factors into the theoretical model, this study supplements the perceived needs theory and extends it from urban setting to rural setting. Implications of the findings have been discussed.

Abstract:This study is among the first attempts to empirically investigate the adoption of mobile government by rural populations in developing economies. Based on 409 validated questionnaires collected from families living in rural China, the study examines the interdependences among rural inhabitants' demographic attributes, their access to and perceptions of mobile government, and quantifies how their intention to use mobile government is influenced by technology attributes, social factors and trust beliefs. The results indicate that young males, who live far from a village center or market, and have some knowledge of recent government policies, tend to have a more positive perception of mobile government, and therefore become potential adopters of the service. Perceived ease of use, near-term usefulness, long-term usefulness, integrity, benevolence, image and social influence have significant and positive influences on the intention to use mobile government. Specifically, perceived ease of use, long-term usefulness and social influence have a direct influence on intention to use, while perceived near-term usefulness, integrity, benevolence and image have an indirect influence.

Understanding Post Adoption Switching Behavior for Mobile Instant Messaging Application in China: Based on Migration Theory.

Abstract:Post adoptive IT use is a hot research stream in information systems field, including continuance behaviours and switching behaviours. While there are a great number of studies on users’ intentions or behaviors for diversified information systems, previous post adoptive IT studies pay relatively less attention on users’ switching behaviors. Hence, we know little about this phenomenon and triggers on users’ switching behaviors. This research identifies the features of users IT switching behaviors and examines what trigger their switching intentions and actual behaviors in the context of mobile instant messaging (MIM) application in China. A model of MIM switching behaviors is developed based on Curran and Saguy’s (2001) research on how networks of obligation, trust and relative deprivation affect human’s migration decision and process. Besides these three triggers, we also introduce dissatisfaction and curiosity into our model according to prior IS studies on switching behaviors. A survey research method will be adopted to test this model. Overall, our study may theoretically contribute to further understand users’ IT switching behaviors and yield some practical implications for designers and managers in MIM providers and their products propaganda.
Variations in the Adoption and Use of Mobile Social Apps in Everyday Lives in Urban and Rural China

Abstract:China has in recent years seen the rapid adoption of multifunctional social networking applications such as WeChat. This paper aims to explore if China’s social stratification has influenced the adoption and use of mobile social apps and if social apps such as WeChat can help to bridge the digital divide by providing urban and rural users equal access to diverse information and communication resources. The study is based on 4 months of fieldwork in the Henan Province of central China and combines quantitative data from surveys and qualitative data from semistructured interviews and focus groups. We found that there still exists a digital gap in the adoption and use of mobile social apps such as WeChat between rural and urban China, but such differences are also associated with demographic variables such as age, gender, and education level. Meanwhile, we found that WeChat has become more than a communication tool; it has also played an essential role in everyday problem-solving and information seeking for both rural and urban users. Our qualitative interviews and focus group studies reveal how WeChat influences various aspects of daily life in developing areas in China. We argue that although some divides in information seeking are being overcome, other new divides are emerging.
Prevalence of Mobile Phones and Factors Influencing Usage by Caregivers of Young Children in Daily Life and for Health Care in Rural China: A Mixed Methods Study

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: To capitalise on mHealth, we need to understand the use of mobile phones both in daily life and for health care.OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and factors that influence usage of mobile phones by caregivers of young children.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mixed methods approach was used, whereby a survey (N=1854) and semi-structured interviews (N=17) were conducted concurrently. The quantitative and qualitative data obtained were compared and integrated. Participants were caregivers of young children in Zhao County, Hebei Province, China.RESULTS: Four main themes were found: (i) trends in mobile phone ownership; (ii) usage of mobile phone functions; (iii) factors influencing replying to text messages; and (iv) uses of mobile phones for health care. The majority of 1,854 survey participants (1,620; 87.4%) used mobile phones, but usage was much higher among mothers (1,433; 92.6%) and fathers (41; 100.0%) compared to grandparents (142; 54.6%). Parents were able to send text messages, grandparents often not. Factors influencing the decision to reply to text messages in daily life were checking the mobile phone, trusting the sender, emotion or feeling when receiving a text message, the importance of replying and ease of use of text messages. Of 1,620 survey participants who used a mobile phone, about one in four (432; 26.7%) had used it for health care in the past three months and most (1,110; 93.5%) of 1,187 who had not wished to use their phone to receive health information.CONCLUSION: We found that usage of mobile phones is high, several factors influencing usage and an interest of caregivers to use phones for health care in Zhao County, rural China, which can be used to inform studies in settings with similar characteristics. Future work needs to assess factors influencing mobile phone usage in-depth to optimize experiences of users for specific mHealth-based interventions.

Abstract:This study investigated consumers' attitudes toward and uses of mobile phones via self-report questionnaires in 3,021 Chinese participants ranging from 15 to 65 years old. Confirmatory factor analysis suggests that consumers' attitudes toward mobile phones are composed of three dimensions: sense of security, sense of self-character extension, and sense of dependence. Correlational analyses found all mobile phone attitudes correlated to mobile phone uses.

Abstract:Background: The popularization of mobile phones has largely facilitated the connection between migrant workers in cities and their left-behind children in rural China; but it also triggered a public concern about the mobile phone dependency (MPD) of these children. Aims: The present study aimed to examine the mediating role of depression and the moderating roles of interpersonal relationships in the association between negative life events and MPD, in order to clarify the factors that intensify or abate MPD. Methods: We investigated 1505 left-behind adolescents from 11 junior middle schools in rural China, by using self-report questionnaires; The moderating mediation model and multi-group comparison were conducted by using SPSS 20.0 and Amos 17.0 software. Results: Negative life events had an indirect positive relation with MPD via depression; parent-child relationships group buffer the relation of negative life events with depression; peer relationships played a unique moderation role, as well as an interactive moderation role together with parent-child relationships in the relation between negative life events and MPD. Conclusions: Adverse experiences and emotions are risk factors for MPD in left-behind children; parent-child and peer relationships showed a reinforcement mode in buffering the negative associations between adverse experiences, emotions, and MPD.
Smartphone use and income growth in rural China: empirical results and policy implications

Abstract:The diffusion of mobile information and communication technologies (ICTs) has important implications for rural economic development. Many studies have investigated the potential contributions of mobile ICTs to agricultural production and poverty reduction, but have failed to consider the wider income effects of the use of updated ICTs, such as smartphones. Our findings, based on household-level survey data from rural China and an endogenous switching regression model, indicate that gender, farmers’ education, farm size, and off-farm work participation are the main drivers of smartphone use. Further, we find that smartphone use increases farm income, off-farm income and household income substantially and there is a statistically significant difference in the income effects between male and female users of smartphones. Possible policy interventions from our findings include: (1) support to increase use of smartphones by households headed by women; and (2) a ‘win–win’ approach to rural development that includes improved hard (roads) and soft (education) infrastructure and encompasses the increased use of smartphones so as to increase both off-farm employment opportunities and farm and off-farm incomes.

Abstract:Amidst China’s economic transition towards high-quality development, the latent potential of the rural consumer market has been significantly unlocked, rendering the evolution of rural household consumption patterns a pivotal area of research. In this paper, we empirically investigate the influence of mobile payment on the transformation of consumption patterns within Chinese rural households, utilizing data from the China Household Finance Survey 2017 and China Household Finance Survey 2019. This study’s findings reveal the following key points: Firstly, mobile payment significantly contributes to the enhancement of the consumption structure within rural households. Secondly, the mechanistic analysis demonstrates that mobile payment plays a pivotal role in alleviating mobility constraints and optimizing the consumption environment, thereby facilitating the improvement of rural households’ consumption patterns. Lastly, the heterogeneity analysis indicates that mobile payment has a more pronounced effect on the upgrading of consumption structures among rural households with older household heads and higher education levels. In light of these findings, this paper suggests advancing the development of mobile payment infrastructure in rural areas, enhancing the proliferation of smartphones in rural regions, and bolstering financial education initiatives within rural communities.

Abstract:This study aims to analyse and clarify why mobile payments have been adopted in China at such a rapid pace. Unlike previous studies which focused on mobile payment functionality and the micro-level reasons for adoption, this study emphasized the macro-level and meso-level reasons with an emphasis on social relationships or guanxi to explain the widespread and rapid adoption in China of mobile payment. Initially mobile payment was widely dispersed by leveraging the trust existing in strong relationship ties (e.g. mobile ‘red packets’). In the second phase of mass adoption there was a shift toward relying on economic exchanges in the context of weak urban ties. Now in the third phase mobile payment seeks to abandon social relations altogether relying on technologies for direct human-to-machine interactions. The three successive phases show how the strong interactions between financial regulatory policy and mobile payment development have affected social relationships.

Abstract:Mobility is the foundation of taking part in social and economic life, and is related to equity, quality of life, and other social concerns. While mobility is a large issue in rural areas due to the dispersion of people and facilities, rural mobility is much less evaluated and understood compared with urban travel. This paper employs mobile phone Big Data, which is still novel for rural studies, to examine the spatial pattern and factors influencing rural mobility using Chengdu, China, as the case. The results demonstrate a complex pattern of rural mobility in a time of rural transformation: a number of deep rural areas show a large spatial range and diversity of residents' movements. Nonetheless, statistical results suggest that rural residents living farther away from cities and towns are still generally less mobile. To enhance the equity of mobility among rural residents, policies could focus on improving public transport service and continuing with certain positive aspects of current rural spatial policy.
How Socio-Economic Structure Influences Rural Users' Acceptance of Mobile Entertainment

Abstract:Mobile entertainment services are rapidly and widely developing. However, in emerging markets like Chinese rural area, entertainment related services are still not fully accepted by mobile phone users. This primary research aimed to study Chinese rural people's acceptance for mobile entertainment, to provide comprehensive models, and to explain the problem from its socio-economic roots. Interview and survey data were collected. Using explorative factor analysis method, two mobile entertainment acceptance models were built: one for rural people in North China and the other in East China. The models show that "social influence" is the most influential factor for north rural users while users' "self efficacy" carries the largest weight in East China. Both factors are more important than "product and service quality". The socio-economic roots of the results were analyzed from the differences between the traditional interdependent society in North China and the more independent society in East China. It primarily reveals the possibility to predict users' technology acceptance with socio-economic variables. Implications for mobile entertainment design were discussed.

Abstract:Mobile chronic disease management systems (MCDMS) have become increasingly important in recent years, but in China, challenges remain for their adoption. Existing empirical studies have not completely explored the adoption behavior of potential MCDMS users. This article presents a study in which we investigated factors that influence chronically ill patients in China and their families to adopt or decline to use MCDMS. We applied a research model based on the technology acceptance model (TAM) as well as four contextual constructs (perceived disease threat, perceived risk, initial trust, and technology anxiety) to a survey of 279 potential MCDMS service participants in China. Our key findings include: (1) as consistent with current research, both perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use have positive impact on potential users' MCDMS adoption intention; (2) both perceived disease threat and initial trust have positive impact on MCDMS adoption intention; (3) the impact of perceived risk is negative, and technology anxiety has negative impact on perceived ease of use of MCDMS; (4) young people place more importance on their perceptions of usefulness, ease of operation, and disease threat than middle-aged and older users; (5) family members are more influenced by their perception of ease of use and disease threat than chronically ill patients, while chronically ill patients place more importance on perceived usefulness than family members. This article concludes by discussing the implications of our study for research and practice, as well as limitations and future research directions.

Abstract:Due to the low access rate of cable Internet connection in rural China, the mobile phone has become the most favored new media terminal for rural residents to surf the Internet. Particularly for rural adolescents, the mobile phone has become their primary medium to engage in social activities. By selecting Ou town, located in Central China, as the site of fieldwork and applying the theory of 'domestication', this paper aims to thick describe the structure of rural family politics where new media use has become an integral part of the rural adolescents' lives. The research enriches the study of Internet politics at the micro-level and further reveals major practical issues related to the growth and socialization of rural adolescents in the digital era. This study finds adolescents live in varied 'family politics', and the respective family powers influence the measures and extent of domesticating new media.

Abstract:As an emerging financial service,mobile banking still has great potential for development.However,existing research has not clearly understood its adoption model.Based on a 2007 survey of mainly young and middle-aged middle-level managers,this pa-per develops a Technology Acceptance Model for mobile banking services through analysis of the structural equation model(SEM).The model provides a scientific basis for finding ways of development for mobile banking services.First of all,perceived usefulness has a decisive impact on the behavioral intention to adopt mobile banking.Perceived usefulness largely depends on compatibility,self-efficacy and speed.Secondly,perceived ease of use has little significant effect on the adoption of mobile banking;indicating that the development of mobile banking in China is still in its infancy.Indeed,the majority of respondents did not have experience of us-ing mobile banking.Third,cost factors also have little significant effect on the adoption of mobile banking.Compared to other finan-cial services,mobile banking has advantages of convenience and speed,and can reduce user costs while providing the same kinds of services.Therefore,users of mobile banking services are not sensi-tive to cost factors.Fourth,the perceived risk has a negative impact on the adoption of mobile banking.Based on the above findings,we present the following conclusions and recommendations for mobile banking enterprises:mobile banking in China is still in the early stages of development;patience regarding user learning should be observed;effective ways for developing mobile banking include improving service content,enhancing user ability,increasing service speed and eliminating consumers' security concerns,rather than just focusing on price promotions.
Facilitating Inclusive Use of ICTs in Rural China

Abstract:AbstractThe usage of information and communication technologies (ICTs) is increasingly becoming an important driving force for transforming the rural economy in China. Using a unique nationally-representative household survey dataset in 2015–2019, this study documents the overall trends of internet access, computer and smartphone usage, and e-commerce adoption in rural China and examines the main factors affecting farmers’ adoption of major ICTs. The results show that the increase in usage of ICTs has been impressive. Empirical analyses suggest that human capital, resource endowment, ICT infrastructure, and neighborhood influence are the main determinants of households’ or individuals’ adoption of ICTs. However, a digital divide has emerged across regions and among farmers. This study concludes with several policy implications for fostering rapid and inclusive usage of ICTs in rural areas in the coming digital era.
Analysis of Factors Influencing the Willingness of Chinese Older Adults to Use Mobile Health Devices - A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Survey (Preprint)

Abstract:Mobile medical devices have proved to be an effective tool for managing the health of older persons and an important complement to traditional geriatric care services. However, little is known about the willingness of older persons in China to use these devices and the factors that influence their adoption. This study aims to investigate the determinants of mobile health device usage among older adults in China at individual, social, and familial levels. Utilizing the Andersen Healthcare Utilization Model, this study examines how predisposing characteristics, enabling resources, and need variables impact the willingness of older adults to use mobile health devices. Data for this study were drawn from the Psychology and Behavior Investigation of Chinese Residents survey database, collected between June 20 and August 31, 2022, across 148 cities in China. In order to initially explore the relationship between each potential explanatory variable and the willingness to use mobile health devices among elderly people, therefore, the survey data were subjected to univariate analysis and collinearity diagnosis, followed by the application of a joint model of Binary logistic regression and Chaid decision tree to identity the factors associated with the willingness of elderly people to use mobile health devices. Potential explanatory variables analyzed included gender, ethnicity, educational level, perceived social status, average monthly household income per capita, depression, anxiety, loneliness, social support (measured using the Perceived Social Support Scale), self-efficacy, family health (assessed through the Family Health Short Scale), family communication, health literacy (evaluated by the Short Health Literacy Questionnaire), quality of life, identity bubble, and insurance coverage. A total of 4085 older adults participated in the survey. The mean score for willingness to use mobile health devices, measured on a scale from 0 to 100, was 63.70±25.11. The results of the binary logistic regression showed that living region (central region:OR=0.793,P=0.028; western region:OR=0.826,P=0.018), whether children living together （Not living with children:OR=1.217,P=0.010),health literacy (high health literacy:OR=1.372,P=0.000),self-efficacy(high self-efficacy:OR=1.182,P=0.050), per capita monthly income of the household (>4000 yuan:OR=1.204,P=0.016), perceived social support (middle perceived social support:OR=1.556,P=0.001; high perceived social support:OR=2.172,P=0.000), family communication (OR=0.979,P=0.002), identity bubble (OR=1.011,P=0.000), quality of life (high quality of life:OR=1.810,P=0.000), chronic disease conditions (Having chronic diseases unrelated to mobile health devices:OR=0.816,P=0.035), loneliness (alone:OR=1.199,P=0.033) and depression severity (mild depression:OR=0.787,P=0.014) were associated with elderly peoples’ willingness to use mobile health devices. And the results of the Chaid decision tree model showed that quality of life (χ2=79.094,P=0.000), identity bubble (χ2=45.850,P=0.000), health literacy (χ2=49.719,P=0.000), living region (χ2=13.967,P=0.001), chronic disease conditions (χ2=14.777,P=0.000), family communication (χ2=13.344,P=0.046) and social status (χ2=19.052,P=0.000) are the main factors influencing mobile health devices willingness among elderly people. The results of the two models can be corroborated with each other to provide a comprehensive and accurate picture of the factors influencing elderly people’s mobile health devices. The findings indicate a generally positive attitude toward the use of mobile health devices among older adults in China, with an average willingness score of 63.70 out of 100. Interestingly, positive family communication dynamics were found to reduce the willingness to adopt these devices. This suggests a particular need to focus on isolated and widowed elderly individuals, where the absence of family communication may translate into a higher receptiveness and dependence on mobile health devices. Therefore, policy should prioritize providing free or subsidized health devices to these populations. Moreover, in designing promotional strategies, it is crucial to balance family communication with technology acceptance, while enhancing digital health education within families. This will facilitate the integration of technology in a way that enhances rather than detracts from family health management and emotional bonds, contributing to the closing of gaps in elder care services and improving health management capabilities. Abstract:Little is known about disadvantaged people's adoption and use of mobile Internet services in such a global mobile technologies age. This paper aims to fill this gap by identifying enablers that affect disadvantaged people's adoption and use of mobile Internet services. We present the preliminary results from a qualitative user study with 21 participants, including twelve urban migrant workers and nine elderly people who are recognized as information disadvantaged people in China. Experience experiment, questionnaires and interviews were employed to capture the participants' perception of a mobile lottery application. The factors that affected their use intention were identified and classified into three categories: system factors, social factors and individual factors. Two forms of instructional strategies that guided users' learning were proposed and their effects were examined. This study could be of significance for the design of services based on mobile Internet for information disadvantaged people and contributes to digital inequality and IT adoption by groups stand on the unfortunate side of the divide.
From Communication Technology to Productive Tool:A Sociological Research on the Use of Mobile Phone by Chinese Mid-and Low-Income Classes'

Abstract:So far,there have no systematic studies of mobile phones’ unique social significance towards Chinese Mid-and Low-Income Classes. Based on 34 structured interview cases with various occupations in different regions, this qualitative study finds that livelihood is the top priority of Chinese Mid-and Low-Income Classes'daily life. Thus, the use of their mobile phone focuses on the purpose of making a living and feeding their families. Besides, mobile phone relate to opportunities, information and resources of them, and hold together the core resources for self-employment and migrant workers' livelihood. To a large extent, mobile phone can be viewed as their productive tool, which has played a role to promote their job mobility and status improvement. Moreover, it's a kind of driving force for daily social change, demonstrating the significance of the development.

Abstract:While Japan’s I-mode failed to be adopted in other countries and WAP also did not succeed in promoting mobile data services, a rather simple technology of SMS made its way to facilitate the growth of mobile data services in China. In this paper, we conduct a case study based on actornetwork theory in order to explain 1) how mobile data services are developed and adopted in China, 2) what is the role of SMS in facilitating the development of mobile data services, and 3) what technological and social factors attribute to the adoption process of mobile data services. Drawing upon actor-network theory (ANT), this paper investigates longitudinally the driving forces fueling the development of data services in the China market. By analyzing the network structures formed by the various actors such as mobile data service providers, government departments, technical artifacts, customers, etc., we can better understand the dynamics of the mobile data service development in China and provide valuable references for the rest of the world.
