Abstract:A facile route for the synthesis of luminescent and light refractive polymers is proposed. Silole-containing diyne and halogenated tetraphenylethene derivatives are synthesized and their coupling reactions furnish poly(arylene ethynylene)s with high molecular weights in high yields. All of the polymers are soluble and film-forming and possess a high thermal stability. They emit strong green lights when their solutions and nanoparticle suspensions are photoexcited. The polymers show high refractive indices with low chromatic dispersions. Their RI values can be modulated and their thin films can be crosslinked using UV irradiation, generating negative photoresist patterns.

Abstract:A quaternary copolyimide containing perylene, fluorene and oxadiazole units in the backbone, named as OPFFx, was designed and synthesized by a one-step polycondensation under high temperature. The successful polymerization was proved by both elemental analysis and FT-IR spectra. Weight average molecular weight of the polymer was in the range of 2.02–3.09×104 as measured by GPC. OPFFx with low oxadiazole content has good solubility in common organic solvents such as chloroform and tetrahydrofuran. Thin film of OPFFx could be prepared by directly spin-coating of its chloroform solution onto quartz glass. The polymer showed high thermal stability and the temperature of 10% weight loss was higher than 494°C as measured by TGA in nitrogen, and no apparent glass transition temperature was observed from DSC measurement in nitrogen up to 350°C. The film of OPFFx irradiated by ultraviolet light emitted strong reddish-orange fluorescence. Cyclic voltammetry measurement indicated that OPFFx could be easily reduced (n-doped). Thus, the polymer may potentially be used as a thermal stable light-emitting and electron transporting material for light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:We prepared an azobenzene-functionalized poly(diphenyl-substituted acetylene) (named as PDPA-azo) through the post-polymerization modification route by using the activated ester strategy. The structures of the derived PDPA-azo were fully characterized with comprehensive spectroscopic methods including NMR, FTIR, UV-vis, TGA, and so on. PDPA-azo showed photo-isomerization behavior due to the azobenzene moiety in the side chain. Since the short spacer between polymer main-chain and side-chain, PDPA-azo could not form liquid-crystal phase despite the presence of azobenzene mesogen in the polymer structure. It was noted that the modification of the precursor polymer PDPA-PFP with primary amine-functionalized azobenzene converted the fluorescence behavior from aggregation-induced emission enhancement to aggregation-caused quenching. The control experimental results suggested that the changes in fluorescent behaviors after irradiating under 365 and 254 nm UV lamps could be correlated to the photo-induced isomerization of the azobenzene group. As a result, the fluorescence properties of PDPA-azo can be adjusted by different external stimuli.

Abstract:An unprecedented O-fused ring 5,7-dihydroxy-4-methyl-2,2,3-triphenylbenzofuran-6(2H)-one (3) was first time synthesized. Further, a series of novel dialkyl/fluoroalkyl derivatives of compound 3, 5,7-dialkoxy/fluoroalkoxy-4-methyl-2,2,3-triphenylbenzofuran-6(2H)-one, were obtained with noninvasive fluorescence switching characteristics and aggregation-induced emission properties. Compared with fluoroalkyl derivatives, the alkyl analogs exhibited a significant bathochromic shift in solid-state fluorescence emission. Notably, these noninvasive fluorescent molecular switches could be facilely tuned through light and heat stimulation, which successfully achieved high contrast and reversible fluorescent emission between orange and yellow endowing them with potential applications in data encryption materials. In addition, the single crystal data of compounds 3 and 7-CF3 displayed weak intermolecular interactions in different directions, resulting in twisted conformation and antiparallel slip stacking. Interestingly, the polymer dimethyl silicone film doped with 7-C3F7 also showed an evident light-responsive behavior, meeting the criterion for fluorescent materials in the optical field.

Abstract:Functionalized polyfluorene receives more and more attention due to its wide applications. Here, the syntheses of three novel polyfluorene-based methacrylate macromonomers exhibiting a vast flexibility for further applications are reported. Their emissions strongly depend on the end groups and thus the macromonomers provide blue, green, and red emissions simultaneously with the same excitation light of 365 nm. Their well-defined copolymers with 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization are investigated in detail. These copolymers exhibit high quantum yields in solid film (up to 0.8), and self-assemble into photoluminescent nanoparticles in aqueous solutions with pure blue, green, and red emissions. By simply mixing them, perfect white light emission with high quality is obtained. These aqueous nanoparticles solutions are ready for ink-jet printing to produce exquisite bright and colorful fluorescent pictures.

Abstract:<p>Fluorescence efficiency and stability of quantum dots (QDs) film, which are both key for optoelectronic device, are relatively difficult to be improved simultaneously. Herein, the facile synthesis of vinyl-ether terminated liquid crystals was reported. Based on the host vinyl-ether liquid crystals, the polymer dispersed vinyl-ether liquid crystals (PDVLC), polymer dispersed crosslinked vinyl-ether liquid crystals (PDCVLC) and fluorine-containing polymer dispersed crosslinked vinyl-ether liquid crystals (F-PDCVLC) QDs films were fabricated in succession by dual-step polymerization. As a result, the PDVLC film can realize fluorescence enhancement and tuning, whereas the PDCVLC film not only maintain fluorescence enhancement of PDVLC film but also improve the water-resistant performance. More importantly, the formation of crosslinked film makes it convenient to fabricate QDs film. Subsequently, the F-PDCVLC film can further improve the water-resistant properties by introducing fluorine-containing monomers to enhance the hydrophobic performance. This free-standing (F-) PDCVLC film may offer a new avenue to realize the optimization of QDs film performance.</p>

Abstract:A novel series of conjugated copolymers having oxadiazole, quinoline, quinoxaline, and pherrylenecyanovinylene moieties in the main chain based on fluorene were synthesized in good yields by palladium-catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction, a new approach different from the traditional polyhydrazide precursor route (oxadiazole-containing polymers), acid-catalyzed Friedlander condensation reaction (polyquinolines), and Knoevenagel condensation polymerization (poly(phenylenecyanovinylene)), The thermal, electrochemical, and optical properties of these copolymers were examined. All these polymers possess excellent thermal stability with glass transition temperatures of 114-208 degreesC and onset decomposition temperatures of 387-415 degreesC. Cyclic voltammetry studies reveal that these copolymers possess low-lying LUMO energy levels ranging from -3.01 to -3.37 eV and low-lying HOMO energy levels ranging from -6.13 to -6.38 eV and may be promising candidates for electron-transporting or hole-blocking materials in light-emitting diodes. The polymers in thin films emit strong blue luminance around 414-476 nm, with narrow bandwidth upon photoexcitation. Photoluminescence spectra of the polymers in the films are only red-shifted by 7-11 nm compared to those in the solution, indicating that the aggregation and the excimer fluorescence are suppressed.

Abstract:A series of fluorinated quinoxaline containing polyfluorenes were synthesized by Suzuki polycondensation. The polymer light emitting diodes based on the resulting copolymers emitted blue light, and no green emission was observed either in the photoluminescence spectra when the film had been annealed at 80–160°C nor in the electroluminescence spectra when the current densities increased from 5 to 200mAcm−2. The fluorescence quantum yields decreased from 79% to 36% with increasing content of BPFQ from 1 to 20mol%. Peak external quantum efficiency and luminous efficiency were 2.99% and 2.39cdA−1, respectively, with CIE coordinates of (0.16, 0.10).

Abstract:Several series of fluorene-based light-emitting polymers with the emphasis on achieving efficient and stable blue light emission are reported. Spiro-functionalization may narrow the emission spectra (with smaller tail at longer wavelengths) of fluorene homopolymers to provide purer blue emission. The thermal spectral stability of the polymers could also be improved because of the elevation of the glass transition temperature caused by the spiro-functionalization. However, the excimer emission in fluorene homopolymers is not suppressed by the spiro-functionalization. Alternate copolymers of 9,9-dihexylfluorene and substituted phenylenes may emit efficient blue light both in solution and in film. The optical properties are dependent on the substitution on the phenylene ring. The alkoxy-substituted polymers displayed efficient PL and EL and good thermal spectral stability. The HOMO and LUMO energy levels of the polymers based on the backbone structure could be tuned in a wide range by attaching different functional groups on the phenylene ring. By attaching europium(III) complex at the ends of the side chains in the alternate copolymers, we have demonstrated a new approach to achieving red emission with a very narrow spectrum. The copolymers of 9,9-dihexylfluorene and thiophene and bithiophene with different substitutions were also synthesized to study the effect of substitution and regioregularity on the optical and other physical properties of the polymers.

Abstract:In this paper,a convenient synthetic method for novel 1-(2-benzothiazolyl)-3,5-diphenylpyra-zolines under microwave irradiation was described.And novel electroluminescent polymers based on fluorene having benzothiazole and pyrazoline units in the main chain were synthesized. The result polymers were characterized by FT-IR and NMR.The polymers possess satisfactory thermal stability with glass-transition temperature(T_g) of 143 ℃ and 117 ℃,respectively.PLEDs fabricated with the structure of ITO/PEDOT/polymer/BCP/Alq/Mg∶Ag show turn-on voltage of(9.8) V and(11.5) V,and they can emit green light with maximum brightness of 107 cd/m~2 and 65 cd/m~2,respectively.

Abstract:Photoinduced Polymorphism of Fluorescent Organic Molecules in Solid State In article number 2301627, Zhiyang Liu, Quan Li, and co‐workers exploit a new organic molecule that can form single crystals with different fluorescence colors. When the crystal is irradiated by using ultraviolet light, it can achieve in‐situ fluorescence color changes from blue to chartreuse. During this process, the crystal does not undergo any chemical reaction, only the conformation and packing mode of the molecules are changed. Crystals can be melted under high‐power ultraviolet light due to the presence of photothermal effect.

Effect of Fluorenone Units on the Property of Polyfluorene and Oligofluorene Derivatives: Synthesis, Structure−Properties Relationship, and Electroluminescence

Abstract:A series of well-defined 9,9'-dihexylfluorene-co-fluorenone copolymers with various fluorenone contents and a set of monodisperse oligofluorenes in the chain center have been developed through the palladium-catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction. The structure-property relationships, especially the effect of fluorenone moieties on the photophysical and electroluminescent properties of these materials, are systematically investigated to elucidate the exact origin of the low-energy emission in polyfluorenes. On the basis of our substantial studies of the steady-state photoluminescence (PL) and PL decay dynamics of the fluorenone-containing oligomers and copolymers both in dilute solutions and in thin films, the origin of the controversial low-energy emission band might be due to the interaction between intrachain fluorenone moieties in polyfluorenes instead of the intermolecular aggregates or excimers. We further show that fluorene pentamer with a central fluorenone unit ( oligomer 2) is more appropriate to represent the actual chromophore responsible for the green emission in the copolymers. The green emission of the copolymers in the solid states is well described by single-exponential decay and has a lifetime ranging from 4.21 to 8.15 ns, depending on fluorenone content. The substantially enhanced intensity of the green emission with increasing the intermolecular interaction in solid states results from the contribution of both the intramolecular and the more efficient intermolecular energy transfer from the fluorene segments to fluorenone moieties. We also find that the emission wavelength and the lifetime of the green emission for the copolymer with the lowest fluorenone content (PHF-FO0.1) in solid states are very similar to those of the emerging low-energy emission for poly(9,9'-dihexylfluorene) (PDHF) after high-temperature thermal annealing in air. Bright yellow electroluminescence (EL) is achieved from double-layer LEDs based on these materials with an emission peak of 540-579 nm that steadily red-shifted with increasing fluorenone contents. The better luminance and external quantum efficiencies are probably due to improved electron injection and carrier transporting as well as efficient charge trapping and recombination at the fluorenone sites.

Abstract:A series of fluorene-fluorenone copolymers constituted by 9,9-di(3,6,9-trioxadecyl)-fluorene and 9-fluorenone moieties in different molar ratios have been synthesized by Yamamoto coupling reactions. By means of the UV-Vis and PL emission spectra of solution and solid state film, the effect of fluorenone acting as an energy acceptor on the energy transfer process and the photophysics of the copolymers was investigated. In dilute solution, the fluorescence of the polyfluorene backbone was dominant and the energy transfer depended on the polymer concentration strongly. The energy transfer efficiency of the thin film was enhanced rapidly with increasing the fluorenone content and the phenomenon became more distinct after being annealed.

Abstract:Diphenylacetylene monomers functionalized with vinyl and ester groups (1 and 2) were synthesized. The monomers were polymerized by WCl6-Ph4Sn into their corresponding polymers (P1 and P2) with the (meth)acrylic functionality remained intact, as verified by the structural analysis of the polymers using spectroscopic methods. The polymers are soluble in common organic solvents and form films of good quality when their solutions are spin-coated. The solutions of the polymers emit green light upon photoexcitation. Their emission spectra shift to longer wavelengths and narrow in widths when the solution concentrations are increased, presumably due to the formation of the intramolecular excimers. When the polymer chains are aggregated, their emission efficiencies are increased (Phi(F) up to similar to 88%), showing a unique phenomenon of aggregation-enhanced emission. The (meth)acrylic groups bestow photosensitivity on the polymers, whose photo-cross-linking enables ready fabrication of highly fluorescent photoresist patterns.

Abstract:Developing red fluorescence emitters with simple structures via convenient synthetic routes is highly desirable yet challenging. Herein, two novel donor–acceptor-type red emitters, DCFOPV-TPA and SCFOPV-TPA, featuring the intramolecular charge transfer effect were designed by integrating triphenylamine and trifluoromethyl into a CN-substituted oligo(p-phenylene vinylene) backbone. Both chromophores exhibited aggregation-induced enhanced emission and solvatochromic behavior. Moreover, DCFOPV-TPA also displayed reversible mechanofluorochromic properties under external force.

Abstract:A new series of four fluorene-thiophene copolymers, PF-co-2%TAQI, PF-co-5%TAQI, PF-co-10%TAQI and PF-co-15%TAQI, were synthesized by the Suzuki cross-coupling polymerization of 9,9-dihexylfluorene-2,7-dibromofluorene and N-butyl 6-[3-(2,5-dibromothienyl)]anthraquinone-2,3-dicarboxylic imide. The polymers have good solubility in common organic solvents and can form thin films by spin coating or casting. The UV–vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectra for the copolymers in dilute solution are similar to those of polyfluorene, i.e. maximum absorption at 381nm and 417nm and PL at 439nm. The UV–vis spectra of the polymer films also exhibit a single peak at 378nm, while an extra emission peak was found at 612nm, 618nm, 628nm and 626nm for PF-co-2%TAQI, PF-co-5%TAQI, PF-co-10%TAQI and PF-co-15%TAQI, respectively, presumably resulting from the excimer of anthraquinone imide groups. The electroluminescent properties of the copolymers were investigated using single-layer (ITO/PEDOT/Polymer/LiF/Al) and double-layer (ITO/PEDOT/Polymer/TPBi/LiF/Al) (TPBi, 1,3,5-Tris(1-phenyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)benzene) LED devices. The double-layer devices based on copolymers emit multicolors under different voltages. The Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of PF-co-2%TAQI are (0.356, 0.249), (0.285, 0.210), (0.264, 0.277) and (0.240, 0.250) under 12V, 14V, 16V and 18V, respectively.

Abstract:Vinylsilafluorene (VSiF) was successfully synthesized and copolymerized with vinylcarbazole and methyl methacrylate via free radical copolymerization for the first time. The synthesis, photophysical properties, computational modeling studies, and organic light-emitting devices of the VSiF copolymers were presented. The good coordinated photoluminescent (PL) spectra with the absorption of blue light-emitting materials and the high energy band-gap of the VSiF copolymers were observed. Higher triplet band gap ( 3 E g ) to host the blue phosphorescent emitters and better HOMO and LUMO than PVK for electron and hole injection and transportation of the VSiF model compounds were revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The preliminary device results in applications of these copolymers as host materials for green phosphorescent emitters demonstrate the copolymers of VSiF and vinylcarbazole have comparable device performance of polyvinylcarazole (PVK), suggesting a bright future of VSiF as building blocks for host materials.

Abstract:A novel series of soluble blue light-emitting conjugated random and alternating copolymers derived from 9,9′-dioctylfluorene (FO) and 3,6-dimethoxyl-9,9-dimethyl-9-silafluorene (DMSiF) were successfully synthesized by Suzuki coupling polymerization. The feed ratios of FO to DMSiF were 90:10, 80:20, 75:25, and 50:50. Chemical structures and optoelectronic properties of the copolymers were characterized by NMR, UV absorption, photoluminescence, and cyclic voltammetry. The 1H NMR spactra of the copolymers indicated that DMSiF content in the copolymers was slightly lower than its feed composition. The random copolymers exhibited PFO-segment-dominated UV absorption and PL spectra in THF solution, in comparison with significantly blue-shifted spectra of the alternating copolymer. The blue shift of the spectra became more remarkable in cast film and increased with the increment of DMSiF content. The changes of the UV absorption and PL spectra in solution and film were ascribed to the effect of methoxyl substituents which can hinder the chain rotation and influence the polymer comformation espercially in the solid film. The systematic invesetigations on the solubility, thermostability, electrochemical property, and photophysical property of the copolymers showed that silafluorene was an attractive building unit for optoelectronic materials.
