Abstract:One of the interesting research subjects in DEA is to choose appropriate input and output indicators. In the process, one may encounter many problems, such as the selection tools, correlation analysis, and the classification of input versus output status. In this paper, we propose a new method for choosing DEA variables. Unlike previous research, it is based on the conception of cash value added (CVA), and can make a selection according to the statistic results. This new method has some advantages: first, it is more objective, avoiding the influence of subjective factors on the subsequent calculation; second and most important is that it provides managers and researchers with measurement variables and exact classifications of these factors; third, all variables under discussion come from financial statements which are easily available. This variable selection method has been applied to 14 Chinese commercial banks, and both regression and statistic test results are satisfactory.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a popular mathematical tool for analyzing the relative efficiency of homogenous decision-making units (DMUs). However, the existing DEA models cannot tackle the newly confronted applications with imprecise and negative data as well as undesirable outputs simultaneously. Thus, we introduce undesirable outputs into modified slack-based measure (MSBM) model and propose an interval-modified slack-based measure (IMSBM) model, which extends the application of interval DEA (IDEA) in fields that concern with less undesirable outputs. The novelties of the model are that it considers the undesirable outputs while dealing with imprecise and negative data, and it is slack-based. Furthermore, the model with undesirable outputs is proven translation-invariant and unit-invariant. Moreover, a numerical example is provided to illustrate the changes of the lower and upper bounds of the efficiency score after considering the undesirable outputs. The empirical results show that, without considering undesirable outputs, most of the lower bounds of the efficiency scores will be overestimated when the DMUs are weakly efficient and inefficient. The upper bound will also change after considering undesirable outputs when the DMU is inefficient. Finally, an improved degree of preference approach is introduced to rank the DMUs.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is an effective tool to measure the relative efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs) with multiple inputs and outputs. This study classifies the outputs into desirable and undesirable outputs, and then presents two DEA models, radial and non-radial models, to measure the environment efficiency for DMUs with undesirable outputs. Finally, two proposed DEA models are applied to evaluate the performance of 26 countries within OECD, in which two inputs (population and total energy consumption), two desirable outputs (GDP and total power generation) and one undesirable output (CO2 emission) are considered, and some managerial implications are demonstrated.

Abstract:Current evaluation study on Demand side management (DSM) is limited to the cost-benefit analysis, which is not enough for improvement of the integrated decision-making on DSM. This paper puts forward a DEA method to measure the relative efficiencies of DSM implementation In different electricity distribution districts, constructs the input and output factors according to the long-term mechanisms and the goal of DSM, discusses the efficiency analysis, and gives specific directions for the inefficient service centers to improve their operation efficiencies possibly. In addition, DEA models for the DSM power conserving projects are proposed. This work will provide useful information for the DSM implementation.

Abstract:Traditional DEA researches mostly focus on the issue of efficiency measurement, while decision makers are keen to seek a practical and feasible way to improve the efficiency of their firms. This paper will pay attentions to this issue and propose several non-radial DEA models to improve the efficiency of inefficient DMUs from the side of inputs, outputs or both sides of input and output, separately. Also a comparative study between the proposed models and the traditional models is developed by two simple numerical examples. Finally, the conclusions and the future research directions are also pointed out.

Abstract:How to evaluate the performance of decision-making units (DMUs) with fixed-sum outputs is a timely and challenging question in data envelopment analysis (DEA). Two major challenges are (1) how to determine a common equilibrium efficient frontier and (2) how to deal with multiple feasible equilibrium efficient frontiers. This paper first uses a simple dataset to illustrate the possibility of multiple equilibrium efficient frontiers and the corresponding major differences in the DMUs' efficiencies and rankings resulting from these frontiers. We address these challenges by considering all feasible equilibrium efficient frontiers and develop several models to obtain the corresponding efficiency intervals, ranking intervals and dominance relations for the DMUs with fixed-sum outputs. We illustrate the proposed approach with two numerical examples and show that it gives more informative results than previous DEA approaches. For example, there are interesting dominance relations between DMUs under the fixed-sum outputs; yet these relations do not exist when there are no fixed-sum outputs. In addition, the efficiency ranges and ranking intervals can be narrowed by accounting for policy suggestions such as adjustment constraints of fixed-sum outputs for DMUs. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:In the container port performance evaluation, the heterogeneity of input or output measures often exist owing to non-controllable external factors such as geographical location, regional economy, political systems and so on. Therefore, it becomes imperative to investigate the individual input or output measures so as to identify their specific impact on the efficiency of a port. In addition, the purpose of performance evaluation cannot be a mere exercise of candidate ranking. The purpose of this article is to study ways of retaining efficiency and improving on inefficiency. The article utilizes the conventional Data Envelopment Analysis model to test the sensitivity of the individual input and output of a decision-making unit (DMU). For an efficient DMU, we measure how much an input can be increased, or an output decreased, without changing its efficiency status. For an inefficient DMU, we measure how much an input should be decreased, or an output increased, to make it achieve the best practice frontier. The new approaches are applied to the efficiency analysis of 77 global container ports. The results indicate that the number of berths and the capital deployed are the most sensitive measures impacting performance of most container ports. The analysis also reveals that container ports located in different continents behave differently.

Abstract:The power industry is one of the leading industries. In recent years, despite the rapid development of China's power industry, the analysis of the efficiency of the power sector is limited to some technical indicators which cannot fully reflect the efficiency level. In order to effectively address these issues, this paper uses the method of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). In this method, first of all, we need not subjectively set the index weight of each input and output indicators of the power sector, which can avoid human errors and ensure the objectivity of the evaluation results. What's more, it's easy to operate, using the approach of mathematical programming for data calculation. Besides, DEA model is not only able to tell whether the decision-making unit is effective or not, but can also further analyze the decision-making unit. Therefore, it can effectively evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of decision-making unit in terms of inputs and outputs.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) has recently gained great popularity in modeling environmental performance because it provides condensed information to decision makers when the production process includes undesirable outputs. In this paper, we develop a new slacks-based efficiency measurement for modeling environmental performance using the environmental DEA technology. The proposed index has more theoretical justification, and distinguishes among different decision making units (DMUs) better in practice. Then we further extend it to the nonoriented index with double aim of increasing desirable outputs and reducing undesirable outputs. Finally, we calculate the index for each of 25 OECD European countries in a model of CO2 emission performance from 2007 to 2009 and the results obtained are presented.

Abstract:In order to allocate the limited research resources more effectively,it's necessary to study the input-output efficiency of research institutes.Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA) is a suitable tool to be used in efficiency or performance evaluation.However,the traditional DEA approaches can't be directly used in performance evaluation of research institutes because of two difficulties.One is that the operation process of research institutes is a complex system,the other is the existence of dual-role variables.The current paper proposes a performance evaluation method for research institutes,and can overcome the above two problems.As a result,the proposed method can generate reasonable and fair efficient scores for research institutes.Finally,an empirical research on the efficiency evaluation of 50 universities shows that the method is reasonable.

Abstract:Conventional DEA performs like a "black box" and provides no information about sub-processes. In some cases, such as banks, providing services made up of interactive and interdependent processes. Also, in real-world applications, inputs could be shared among these sub-processes. Moreover, due to the characteristics of some variables, such as number of employees, only integer values could be assigned to them. Hence, to address these shortcomings, in this study, a mixed-integer network DEA (MI-NDEA) with shared inputs and undesirable outputs has been proposed to evaluate the efficiency of decision-making units. The proposed model considers integer values for some of the input variables. Also, it assumes that some inputs are shared among different stages of the production process. To illustrate the capability of the model, the efficiency of "Internet banking", "profitability", "production", and "overall" performance of a set of bank branches have been evaluated and results are discussed. The results indicate that the mean of overall efficiency for all branches is high. However, some branches are not efficient enough in the "Production" stage or "Profitability" stage. To identify the source of inefficiency in such branches, projection values have been calculated and recommendations have been made for policy makers.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) has gained great popularity in environmental performance measurement because it can provide a synthetic, standardized environmental performance index when pollutants are suitably incorporated into the traditional DEA framework. This paper applies the DEA approaches to evaluate the CO2 emission performance and measure its satisfaction degree of 40 countries and regions from 2008 to 2009. We use the input variables of capital, energy consumption and population and the output variables of gross domestic product (GDP) and the amount of fossil-fuel CO2 emissions. Past studies about the application of DEA to environmental performance measurement have not considered uncontrollable factors. In this paper, we present the DEA formulas with controllable and uncontrollable factors to measure environment performance and its satisfaction degree. We first define and construct the environmental production technologies with desirable and undesirable outputs. The degree of environment satisfaction performance based on the DEA approach can be computed by solving a series of data envelopment analysis formulas. A case study of 40 countries and regions applying the DEA approach is also presented.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been extended to cross-efficiency evaluation to provide better discrimination and ranking of decision-making units (DMUs). However, the non-uniqueness of optimal weights in the traditional DEA models (CCR and BCC models) has reduced the usefulness of the DEA cross-efficiency evaluation method. To solve this problem, we introduce the concept of the satisfaction degree of a DMU towards a set of optimal weights for another DMU. Then, a new DEA cross-efficiency evaluation approach, which contains a maxmin model and two algorithms, is proposed based on the satisfaction degrees of the DMUs. Our maxmin model and algorithm 1 can obtain for each DMU an optimal set of weights that maximises the least satisfaction degrees among all the other DMUs. Further, our algorithm 2 can then be used to guarantee the uniqueness of the optimal weights for each DMU. Finally, our approach is applied to a real-world case study of technology selection.

Abstract:Equilibrium efficient frontier DEA (EEFDEA) approaches have been developed specifically for the efficiency assessment of decision-making units (DMUs) with fixed-sum outputs in recent years. Still, current EEFDEA approaches can only evaluate either input- or output-oriented efficiency. This paper proposes a new non-oriented EEFDEA (NEEFDEA) approach, which measures efficiency by capturing input excesses and output shortfalls simultaneously. However, the NEEFDEA approach also encounters the difficulty of guaranteeing the uniqueness of the common equilibrium efficient frontier (EEF). To address the problem, we further present a new bargaining-based selection method to deal with multiple feasible EEFs. By regarding DMUs as game players to seek to optimize their own evaluation results, the screening process of EEFs is formulated as a bargaining game, it can generate a unique and Pareto-optimal EEF by solving the game. Such an EEF is essential to bring all DMUs to a consensus on the final evaluation results. Finally, to present the performance of our model, we apply the proposed approaches to conduct an empirical study of 30 companies in the vehicle industry in 2020. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Production function of the expected outputs and undesirable outputs are constructed in this article firstly,and then non-convex nonparametric least squares estimation considering the undesirable outputs is studied.When αi1,β 'i 1,αi2,β 'i 2,are given,explicit expression of f and g can be obtained.According to DEA considering undesirable outputs and CNLSUO,relationship between the two fitting curves can be calculated.For the actual outputs of each firm,the estimation of CNLSUO is never larger than that of DEA.Empirical analysis shows that the DEA estimation considering the desirable and undesirable outputs is good.The analysis of statistical properties of methods for environmental efficiency evaluation,including least squares estimation of DEA considered undesirable outputs is bound to expand the scope of non-parameter statistical properties of DEA,which promote the further integration and development of statistics and operations.

Abstract:Environmental efficiency analysis plays a crucial role in achieving a balance between economic development and environmental protection, ultimately leading to sustainable development. While Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) serves as a conventional tool for efficiency analysis, its traditional methodology confines analysis to a single perspective. To enhance the comprehensiveness of environmental efficiency analysis, this study combines the DEA model with multi-criteria decision analysis, yielding a multicriteria efficiency evaluation method. This approach mitigates the unilateral nature of evaluation outcomes arising from a singular standard. Additionally, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method is integrated into the framework to address the challenges associated with high-dimensional and non-homogeneous data. By incorporating the multicriteria decision making method, the new approach overcomes the limitations of traditional DEA methods, which struggle with the analysis of high-dimensional and non-homogeneous data. The proposed method facilitates the seamless transition between multiple evaluation criteria within the same evaluation system, enabling flexibility and adaptability in assessing efficiency. To demonstrate the practicability of the proposed method, a case study focusing on the efficiency analysis of block waste separation in China city is conducted. The study detected fluctuations in the environmental efficiency of identical decision-making units under diverse evaluation standards, attributing these variations to the different emphases of the evaluation criteria. The findings underscore the efficacy of the new method in providing decision-makers with a unified efficiency analysis paradigm. This paradigm enables a comprehensive consideration of environmental efficiency improvements across various levels and perspectives, accommodating different priorities in local decision-making.

Abstract:Based on literatures in recent years on DEA models with interval data, this paper aims at enhancing the interval efficiencies for inefficient DMUs. Ideal points are used to determine the extent of inefficient DMUs that can be improved. Numbers of specific programs are established to obtain the target point as a benchmarking on the efficient frontier, and bring the adjusted inputs and outputs as respectively close to their target ones as possible. The interval efficiencies can be improved by increasing only outputs, decreasing only inputs or adjusting both simultaneously, so that the lower bound of the interval efficiency can be increased as much as possible while the upper bound can attains one. The research is based on the interval data setting, so the approach is proposed to make sure the final adjusted data are still interval data. Finally, a numerical example is shown to illustrate the idea of the method.

Abstract:Aim: Completeness of indicator information is an important problem that needs to be further studied in environmental management efficiency evaluation (EMEE). However, this problem has not attracted sufficient attention in existing studies and there is lack of the total factor productivity analysis, which is an effective method to evaluate the environmental management efficiency change that has been applied in different fields. Methods: A novel EMEE model is proposed based on indicator information integration and DEA-Malmquist index, in which the kernel of the indicator information integration is the evidential reasoning approach with an indicator weight calculation. Results: The DEA-Malmquist index is introduced to evaluate the efficiency of environmental management and also analyzes its efficiency change based on the integrated indicator information. A case study of 30 provinces (except Tibet) in mainland China from 2005-2017 is provided to illustrate the analysis of regional efficiency distribution, efficiency change and improvement strategy of environmental management. Conclusion: The proposed model can provide a reference for the improving regional environmental protection
