Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) constructed using colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as a promising and cost-effective solution for transparent photovoltaics. However, the efficiency of these LSCs in converting sunlight to electricity often remains low due to limited quantum efficiency and significant reabsorption losses associated with the QDs. Furthermore, the majority of high-efficiency LSCs incorporate QDs containing heavy metals, curtailing their potential for widespread commercialization. Here, we have developed white-emitting CuGaS2/ZnS and its optical characteristics are adeptly tailored through manipulation of the ZnS shell. The optimal configuration of CuGaS2/ZnS demonstrates an impressive photoluminescence quantum yield of 80% and an extensive Stokes shift of similar to 190 nm. These QDs are integrated in a polymer matrix to produce LSCs with dimensions of 5 x 5 x 0.2 cm3. Under standard illumination conditions of one sun AM 1.5G (100 mW cm-2), these LSCs exhibit an optical efficiency of 1.7%, average visible transmittance of similar to 75% and color rendering index of 91.6. To improve the solar light harvesting, we constructed a tandem LSC, with CuGaS2/ZnS QD-LSC as the top layer and near-infrared-active AgInS2/ZnS QD-LSC was developed as the bottom layer. The optical efficiency could reach 4.4%, which underscores the potential of these environmentally friendly core/shell QDs for cost-effective transparent solar conversion applications. CuGaS2/ZnS quantum dots with a Stokes shift of similar to 190 nm and PLQY of 80% were developed for LSCs, which achieved an optical efficiency of 1.7%. A tandem configuration integrating near-infrared-active AgInS2/ZnS achieved an optical efficiency of 4.4%.
An Efficient Green-Emitting Quantum Dot with Near-Unity Quantum Yield and Suppressed Auger Recombination for High-Performance Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Near 100% photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) is the first target for designing luminescent quantum dots (QDs). Here, an alloyed QD with a core/shell structure of Cd0.194Zn0.806Se0.406S0.594/ZnS is synthesized and characterized by the feature of large core size (about 10 nm) and thin shell (around three ZnS monolayers). It exhibits an efficient green emission with the PL QY of 99.8% and ultra-fast radiative transition rate (kr) of 4.16 x 107 s-1. It demonstrates that the excited state will be rapidly decayed to its ground state through a radiative channel and less vulnerable to non-radiative processes. Under a high pump intensity (254.65 mu J cm - 2), the Cd0.194Zn0.806Se0.406S0.594/ZnS QD still owns a long biexciton decay lifetime (tau xx) of 1.05 ns and high biexciton QYxx of 25.1%, corresponding to a suppressed non-radiative Auger recombination. The Cd0.194Zn0.806Se0.406S0.594/ZnS QD based light-emitting diode exhibits a peak external quantum efficiency of 20.1% and brightness of over105 cd m-2 at 5.2 V. We believe that the Cd0.194Zn0.806Se0.406S0.594/ZnS QD not only provides a near-unity QY but also ensures its QD based light-emitting diode (QLED) with an excellent performance, which could be an excellent QD material for QLED applications.
Engineering the Optical Properties of Eco‐friendly CuGaS2/ZnS and CuGaInS2/ZnS Core/shell Quantum Dots for High Performance Tandem Luminescent Solar Concentrators

Abstract:In this work, highly luminescent eco‐friendly CuGaS2/ZnS (CGS/ZnS) and CuGaInS2/ZnS (CGIS/ZnS) core/shell quantum dots (QDs) were rationally prepared for luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) application. It is demonstrated that the optical properties of these core/shell QDs can be tailored by engineering the ZnS shell thickness, leading to large Stokes shifts and high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) up to 94.6 %. As‐synthesized core/shell QDs with optimized optical properties were employed to fabricate LSCs (5×5×0.5 cm3) using glasses as waveguides, wherein the individual CGS/ZnS and CGIS/ZnS QDs‐based LSCs respectively exhibited an optical efficiency (ηopt) of ∽3.26 and 6.53 % under AM 1.5G illumination (100 mW cm‐2). Remarkably, a tandem QDs‐LSC integrated via vertical stacking of the top yellow‐emitting CGS/ZnS QDs‐LSC and bottom red‐emitting CGIS/ZnS QDs‐LSC delivered an optical efficiency (ηopt) as high as 9.94 %, which is respectively ∽3 and 1.5 times higher than the individual QDs‐LSCs and is comparable to various best‐reported QDs‐LSCs. The results indicate that environment‐benign I‐III‐VI2 core/shell QDs with engineered optical properties and LSC architectural design are promising to develop future cost‐effective and high‐performing building‐integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs). Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSC) are a promising technology for building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). Besides obtaining satisfactory efficiencies and aesthetic appeal, a simple and low-cost fabrication process is required to deploy large-scale LSCs. Herein, we introduced a facile and cost-effective fabrication method to obtain laminated LSC (L-LSC) devices. By optimizing the fabrication parameters, L-LSC based on polymer substrates exhibited higher efficiency (power conversion efficiency, PCE=0.24%, external photon efficiency, ηext=4.14% and optical efficiency, ηopt=3.46%) compared to glass-based L-LSC (PCE=0.09%, ηext=1.59%, ηopt=1.76%) due to their excellent optical properties and good compatibility with the laminated emissive layer. Using the optimized L-LSC device, a color-tunable multilayered L-LSC structure is then proposed. By embedding different QDs into two interlayers, the color appearance of the device can be tuned, simultaneously improving the overall efficiency. This study presents a notable advancement towards a practical application of L-LSCs with a satisfactory efficiency and color aesthetics for sustainable BIPVs.

Abstract:Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are promising building blocks for the realization of future optoelectronic technologies. In particular, they are widely studied for photoelectric conversion, thanks to their low cost and high solar energy conversion efficiency. The majority of the QDs used in devices for photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen generation is based on heavy-metal containing materials, such as Pb and Cd. Unfortunately, the use of these materials hamper their prospective to be commercially developed due to health and environmental concerns. In this work, by using a template assisted cation exchange procedure, we developed eco-friendly CuInSe2/(CuInSexS1-x)(5)/CuInS2 QDs based on a gradient mull shell architecture, exhibiting tunable Near Infra-Red (NIR) optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL) properties. The NIR QDs are used as sensitizer for mesoporous TiO2 and employed for PEC hydrogen production. The PEC device based on the gradient architecture showed a 200 % improvement compared to the simple core CuInSe2 QDs and 73 % compared to the core/shell structure. The enhancement is ascribed to favorable stepwise electronic band alignment and improved electron transfer rate with the incorporation of interfacial gradient layers. These results could pave the way for the synthesis of heavy-metal-free QDs, exhibiting broad application in emerging optoelectronic technologies.

Abstract:Eco‐friendly Ag,Mn‐doped ZnInS2/ZnS quantum dots exhibit UV‐selective absorption, emitting orange‐red light with a 180 nm Stokes shift. With ZnS passivation, PLQY reaches 53%. A proof‐of‐concept luminescent solar concentrators (LSC) reaches 90.7% visible light transparency, akin to pure PLMA (90.8%). The LSC's optical efficiency reaches 1.42%, competing with high‐performance UV‐harvesting transparent LSCs. Quantum dots (QDs) are promising building blocks for luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs), yet most QD‐based LSCs suffer from toxic metal composition and color tinting. UV‐selective harvesting QDs can enable visible transparency, but their development is restricted by large reabsorption losses and low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). The developed here Ag, Mn: ZnInS2/ZnS QDs show a high PLQY of 53% due to the passivating effect of ZnS shell. These QDs selectively absorb UV light and emit orange‐red light with a large Stokes shift of 180 nm. A LSC of 5 × 5 × 0.2 cm3, fabricated using a poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA) as a matrix, maintains 87% of integrated PL after 7 h of UV exposure. The QD‐PLMA achieved 90.7% average visible transparency (AVT) and a color rendering index (CRI) of 95.8, which is close to plain PLMA (AVT = 90.8%; CRI = 99.5), yielding excellent visible light transparency. Incorporating Si‐PVs at LSC edges, the Ag, Mn: ZIS/ZnS QD‐LSC achieved an optical efficiency of 1.42%, ranking competitively among high‐performing UV‐harvesting LSCs.

Abstract:We have developed an efficient strategy to improve the brightness and stability of CuInS 2 quantum dots via Ga 3+ doping combined with the overgrowth of ZnS shell. The incorporation of Ga 3+ in crystal lattices greatly suppresses the diffusion of Cu + and reduce the formation of Cu-related defects, leading to a photoluminescence quantum yield as high as 92%. These nanocrystals can be integrated into luminescent solar concentrators and the devices exhibit a power conversion efficiency reaching 3.87%.

Abstract:The performance degradation is still a challenge for the development of conventional polymer luminescent solar concentrator (LSC). Liquid LSC (L-LSC) may be an alternative due to polymerization-free fabrication. Here, we have prepared a CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs)-based L-LSC by injecting the QDs solution into a self-assembly quartz glass mold. The as-fabricated L-LSC performance is evaluated by optical characterization and photo-electrical measurement. The external quantum efficiency of the L-LSC is up to 13.44%. After coupling the commercial solar cell, the optimal optical efficiency reaches 2.32%. These results demonstrate that L-LSC may provide a promising direction for advanced solar light harvesting technologies.

Abstract:The luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) absorbs large areas of solar photons and directs the down-converted fluorescence into solar cells for power generation.Enabling LSCs to effectively utilize the solar spectrum while maintaining a high degree of aesthetics is the key to their future applications.Here, the InP/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) are dropped into off-stoichiometric thiol-ene (OSTE) polymers for the fabrication of the LSC device.The effect of doping concentrations on the trade-off between optical efficiency and aesthetic properties has been discussed.A sufficient concentration of QDs is required to utilize more solar energy.However, due to the high concentration of QDs in the LSC device, attentions need to be paid to the scattering effect that degrades the optical performance and induces the deterioration of aesthetic parameters.When the QD concentration is 1.6 × 10−2 mg/mL, LSC obtains the optimal optical efficiency of 2.7%.The excellent aesthetic parameters with the color rendering index (CRI) of 92.94 and the average visible transmittance (AVT) of 81.87% are maintained at the same time.We anticipate that this work sheds light on design optimization for achieving high optical efficiency LSC devices with excellent aesthetic parameters.
Unlocking the effects of Cu doping in heavy-metal-free AgIn5S8 quantum dots for highly efficient photoelectrochemical solar energy conversion

Abstract:Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) containing toxic lead and cadmium compounds, i.e., Pb/Cd(S,Se,Te), have been widely studied for hydrogen generation because of their promising optoelectronic properties and efficient photocatalytic activities. However, it is still desirable to construct heavy-metal-free QDs with high photoconversion efficiencies through careful design and doping with more environmentally benign alternatives. Here, we design and synthesize Cu-doped AgIn5S8 (Cu-AIS) QDs that contain Cu T-2 state sites between the Ag 4d and S 3p orbitals, producing adjustable bandgaps and slowing photogenerated charge recombination compared to pristine AIS QDs. We demonstrate that this Cu-doping configuration not only lowers the activation energy barrier with a more negative potential, but it also leads to the efficient separation and transportation of photogenerated electrons and holes. As proof-of-concept, we fabricate a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell based on a Cu-AIS QD-sensitized TiO2 photoanode and achieve a maximum saturated photocurrent density of similar to 9.8 mA cm(-2) at 0.75 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Furthermore, photostability experiments demonstrate that the operational long-term stability of the Cu-AIS QDs is much better than that of an AIS QD-based PEC cell. Overall, heavy-metal-free Cu-AIS QDs pave the way to the design and synthesis of environmentally friendly, high-efficiency, and cost-effective PEC systems for solar-driven hydrogen generation, and other optoelectronic devices, such as photovoltaics and photodetectors.
Highly efficient and stable tandem luminescent solar concentrators based on carbon dots and CuInSe2- xSx/ZnS quantum dots

Abstract:Semi-transparent large-area luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) have been considered an essential part of zero-energy or low-energy consuming buildings in the future. Inorganic colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are promising candidates for LSCs due to the advantages of a tunable bandgap, engineered large Stokes shift, and relatively high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield. However, LSCs that are fabricated using colloidal quantum dots exhibited an inferior stability under long-term illumination, demanding great efforts to explore the highly stable LSCs. Herein, we fabricated large-area (∼100 cm2) tandem LSCs based on highly stable carbon dots (CDs) and highly luminescent near-infrared emitting CuInSe2-xSx/ZnS (CuInSeS/ZnS) QDs. Coupled with a Si diode as a reference, the power conversion efficiency of the corresponding tandem (dimensions: 10 × 10 × 0.5 cm3) and single LSCs (dimensions: 10 × 10 × 0.3 cm3) based on CuInSeS/ZnS QDs under one sun illumination are 0.46% and 0.5%, respectively. For single CuInSeS/ZnS QD based LSCs at a low concentration (0.039 wt%), external and internal quantum efficiencies reach up to 2.87% and 36.37%, respectively. After UV illumination for 8 h, bottom LSCs based on CuInSeS/ZnS QDs retain 93.22% of the initial PL emission, which is higher than that of LSCs (∼80%) without the CD protection. The highly efficient and stable tandem LSCs employing green CDs and NIR CuInSeS/ZnS QDs as PL emitters pave the way for the realization of large area building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) devices.
Exciton Dynamic in Pyramidal InP/ZnSe Quantum Dots for Luminescent Solar Concentrators

Abstract:Colloidal indium phosphide (InP) quantum dots (QDs) have attracted a great attention for their excellent optical properties, and they are a promising candidate for potential applications in optoelectronic devices, such as photocatalysis, light emitting diodes, and bioimaging. However, their use for luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) has been limited owing to their low optical efficiency, which is because of the energy loss due to the strong overlap between their emission and absorption spectra. Here, we synthesized pyramidal InP/ZnSe QDs based on aminophosphine as the phosphorus precursor by adding hydrofluoric acid to remove the oxides on the InP core surface before the growth of a ZnSe shell. Through researching the exciton dynamic of InP/ZnSe QDs with different shell thicknesses, we found that a thick shell can stabilize the 1Pe energy state of the InP core, thus decreasing the spectral overlap in the overall QDs. As a proof of concept, we demonstrated a highly efficient LSC based on “giant” InP/ZnSe QDs, which exhibited an external optical efficiency of 2.5% and a power conversion efficiency of 2% (5 × 5 × 0.5 cm3) upon simulated sunlight illumination (100 mW/cm2), which is among the best reported LSCs based on InP QDs. Pyramidal “giant” InP/ZnSe QDs hold great potential for the breakthrough development in the field of eco-friendly QD-based LSCs.

Eco-Friendly and Efficient Luminescent Solar Concentrators Based on a Copper(I)-Halide Composite

Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) show great promise in reducing the cost of silicon solar cells due to their potential use for high-efficiency energy harvesting. Compared to narrow absorption organic dyes, quantum dots (QDs) are a favorable approach to acquire stable LSCs. However, the use of toxic heavy metals in QDs and the small Stokes shift largely restrict their development. Here, a toxic metal-free, highly luminescent ink based on a copper(I)-halide hybrid cluster is reported, whose quantum yield (QY) exceeds 68%. Under the interaction with halohydrocarbon, CuI and phenethylamine (PEA) can be easily dissolved and the ink can be facilely acquired. The obtained film exhibits strong orange light emission with a large Stokes shift. As a proof-of-concept experiment, (PEA)4Cu4I4 has been used to fabricate LSCs. The as-prepared LSC (4 cm × 4 cm × 0.3 cm) exhibits an internal quantum efficiency (ηint) as high as 44.1%. After coupling to a solar cell, an optical conversion efficiency (ηopt) of 6.85% is acquired from this LSC. In addition, the LSC possesses high stability such as air stability, water stability, and photostability. These results demonstrate that the (PEA)4Cu4I4 film can be employed as a promising candidate for large-area and high-efficiency LSCs.

Abstract:Eco‐friendly, near‐infrared emissive thick‐shell AgInSe2/AgInS2 quantum dots (QDs) are synthesized through template‐assisted cation exchange method. By incorporating AgInSeS gradient shell, an improved charge transfer behavior of AgInSe2/AgInSeS/AgInS2 is observed. Proof‐of‐concept photoelectrochemical cell illustrates that the gradient shell improves the photocurrent density and stability compared to core and core/shell QDs. The findings define a way of designing QDs for solar‐energy conversion. Thick‐shell colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are promising building blocks for solar technologies due to their size/composition/shape‐tunable properties. However, most well‐performed thick‐shell QDs suffer from frequent use of toxic metal elements including Pb and Cd, and inadequate light absorption in the visible and near‐infrared (NIR) region due to the wide bandgap of the shell. In this work, eco‐friendly AgInSe2/AgInS2 core/shell QDs, which are optically active in the NIR region and are suitable candidates to fabricate devices for solar energy conversion, are developed. Direct synthesis suffers from simultaneously controlling the reactivity of multiple precursors, instead, a template‐assisted cation exchange method is used. By modulating the monolayer growth of template QDs, gradient AgInSeS shell layers are incorporated into AgInSe2/AgInS2 QDs. The resulting AgInSe2/AgInSeS/AgInS2 exhibits better charge transfer than AgInSe2/AgInS2 due to their favorable electronic band alignment, as predicted by first‐principle calculations and confirmed by transient fluorescence spectroscopy. The photoelectrochemical cells fabricated with AgInSe2/AgInSeS/AgInS2 QDs present ≈1.5‐fold higher current density and better stability compared to AgInSe2/AgInS2. The findings define a promising approach toward multinary QDs and pave the way for engineering the QDs' electronic band structures for solar‐energy conversion.

Abstract:Abstract A luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) is a solar-light harvesting device that concentrates light on a photovoltaic cell placed at the edge of an LSC panel to convert it into electricity. The nano-sized inorganic–organic cluster complex (dMDAEMA) 4 [Re 6 S 8 (NCS) 6 ] (this refers to RMC where dMDAEMA is 2-dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate) is a promising candidate for LSC luminophores due to its downshifted broad photoluminescence suitable for photovoltaic cells. However, the low quantum yield (QY) of RMC limits the performance. Here, zinc-doped CuGaS/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (ZQD) were used as energy transferring donor with high QY to improve the performance of the LSC. The two metal chalcogenide luminophores, RMC and ZQD, are chemically suitable for dispersion in an amphiphilic polymer matrix, producing a transparent waveguide with suppressed reabsorption and extended harvesting coverage of the solar spectrum. We achieved an η opt of 3.47% and a PCE of 1.23% while maintaining greater than 80% transparency in the visible range. The high performance of this dual-dye LSC with suppressed reabsorption, and scattering losses is not only due to uniform dispersion of dyes in a polymer matrix, but also energy transfer from ZQD to RMC. This report suggests a new possibility for promising various multi-dye LSCs for use in building-integrated photovoltaic windows.

Abstract:AbstractLuminescent solar concentrator (LSC) incorporated with quantum dots (QDs) have been widely regarded as one of the most important development trends of cost-effective solar energy. In this study, for the first time we report a new QDs-LSC integrated with heavy metal free CuInS2/ZnS core/shell QDs with large Stokes shift and high optical efficiency. The as-prepared CuInS2/ZnS QDs possess advantages of high photoluminescence quantum yield of 81% and large Stocks shift more than 150 nm. The optical efficiency of CuInS2/ZnS QDs-LSC reaches as high as 26.5%. Moreover, the power conversion efficiency of the QDs-LSC-PV device reaches more than 3 folds to that of pure PMMA-PV device. Furthermore, the PV device is able to harvest 4.91 folds solar energy with the assistance of this new CuInS2/ZnS QDs-LSC for the same size c-Si PV cell. The results demonstrate that this new CuInS2/ZnS QDs-LSC provides a promising way for the high efficiency, nonhazardous and low cost solar energy.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted much attention owing to their unique optical properties and a wide range of applications. The fabrication and control of CQDs with organic solubility and long-wavelength emission are still urgent issues to be addressed for their practical use in LEDs. Here, organic-soluble CQDs were produced at a high yield of similar to 90% by a facile solvent engineering treatment of 1,3,6-trinitropyrene, which were simultaneously used as the nitrogen and carbon sources. The optical properties of the organic-soluble CQDs (o-CQDs) were investigated in nonpolar and polar solvents, films, and LED devices. The CQDs have a narrow size distribution around 2.66 nm, and can be dispersed in different organic solvents. Significantly, the as-prepared CQDs present an excitation-independent emission at 607 nm with fluorescence quantum yields (QYs) up to 65.93% in toluene solution. A pronounced solvent effect was observed and their strong absorption bands can be tuned in the whole visible region (400-750 nm) by changing the solvent. The CQDs in various solvents can emit bright, excitation-independent, long-wavelength fluorescence (orange to red). Furthermore, benefiting from the unique oil-solution properties, the as-prepared CQDs can be processed in thin film and device forms to meet the requirements of various applications, such as phosphor-based white-light LEDs. The color coordinate for these CQD modified LEDs is realized at (0.32, 0.31), which is close to pure white light (0.33, 0.33).
AgIn5S8/ZnS Quantum Dots for Luminescent Down-Shifting and Antireflective Layer in Enhancing Photovoltaic Performance

Abstract:Colloidal AgIn5S8/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) have recently emerged as a promising, efficient, nontoxic, down-shifting material in optoelectronic devices. These QDs exhibit a high photoluminescent quantum yield and offer a range of potential applications, specifically in the field of photovoltaics (PVs) for light management. In this work, we report an eco-friendly method to synthesize AgIn5S8/ZnS QDs and deposit them on commercial silicon solar cells (with an active area of 7.5 cm2), with which the short-circuit current (JSC) enhanced by 1.44% and hence the power conversion efficiency by 2.51%. The enhancements in PV performance are mainly attributable to the improved external quantum efficiency in the ultraviolet region and reduced surface reflectance in the ultraviolet and near-infrared regions. We study the effect of QD concentration on the bifunctions of downshifting and antireflection. The optimal 15 mg/mL QDs blade-coated onto the Si solar cells realize maximum current generation as the reflectance loss in the visible wavelength is compensated by the minimized reflection in the near-infrared region.

Abstract:Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are promising building blocks for the realization of future optoelectronic technologies, thanks to their size-tunable electronic and optical properties. Among various types of QDs, colloidal "giant" QDs (g-QDs, core/thick-shell) have been widely used in different applications, such as solar cells, light emitting devices, luminescent solar concentrators and photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen production. However, g-QDs have a thick-shell which serves as a physical barrier for electron and hole transfer, leading to a slow charge transfer rate. In this work, we synthesized CdSe/CdSexS1-x/CdS core/shell/shell g-QDs with an intermediate CdSexS1-x alloyed layer. The presence of this interfacial layer largely improves the absorption of CdSe/CdS QDs, particularly in the 300-650 nm range. By engineering the interfacial layer, the holes can leak more into the CdS shell region compared to that of CdSe/CdS QDs. PEC devices based on alloyed g-QDs exhibit a 20% higher saturated photocurrent density (11 ± 0.5 mA cm-2) compared to CdSe/CdS QDs. In addition, after one-hour illumination (100 mW cm-2), the PEC cell based on alloyed g-QDs still exhibits a photocurrent density of 7.5 mA cm-2, maintaining 70% of its initial value. Such alloyed g-QDs are very promising for several emerging optoelectronic applications, where charge separation, transfer and transport play a critical role for the realization of high performance devices.
