Abstract:A simple and efficient protocol for the formylation of amines with formic acid, catalyzed by a polyoxometalate-based chromium catalyst, is described. Notably, this method shows excellent activity and chemoselectivity for the formylation of primary amines; diamines have also been successfully employed. Importantly, the chromium catalyst is potentially non-toxic, environmentally benign and safer than the widely used high valence chromium catalysts such as CrO3 and K2Cr2O7. The catalyst can be recycled several times with a negligible impact on activity. Finally, a plausible mechanism is provided based on the observation of intermediate and control experiments.

Abstract:Formic acid, as an easily available C1 source, can be obtained through CO2 hydrogenation or biomass smelting. For this perspective, N-formylation of amines with formic acid as the C1 synthon can be considered as indirect utilization of CO2 or biomass, thus providing an alternative synthetic strategy. In this work, we present a sustainable protocol for the N-formylation of amines using formic acid as the carbonyl source under catalyst-free conditions. This procedure yields medium to excellent results for various formamides. Furthermore, we successfully extended this protocol to include the reduction coupling of formic acid, primary amines, and aldehydes, demonstrating broad substrate applicability.

Abstract:Formamides represent an abundant class of compounds in organic synthesis. They can be made efficiently by the direct catalytic coupling of methanol with amines in the presence of metal-based catalysts. However, these catalysts require complicated organic ligands, susceptible to oxidative self-degradation, restricting their practical applications. Here, we describe an inorganic ligand-supported chromium (III) catalyst, (NH 4 ) 3 [CrMo 6 O 18 (OH) 6 ], which consists of a central chromium (III) single-atomic core supported by a cycle-shaped inorganic ligand consisting of six Mo VI O 6 octahedra, shows excellent activity and selectivity. Various primary amines and secondary amines are successfully transformed into the corresponding formamides under mild conditions, and the formylation of primary diamines is also achieved. The chromium catalyst can be reused several times with little loss of the activity. Mechanistic insight is provided based on the observation of an intermediate and control experiments.

Abstract:It is challenging to develop simple and low cost catalytic systems while maintaining high reactivity and selectivity. An iron-catalyzed intramolecular C-H amination of sulfamate esters using simple and cheap ligands is reported with general substrate scope (31 examples, up to 95% yield). The addition of second ligand, bipyridine, is able to accelerate the reaction and increase the yield. The ready availability of these iron catalysts provides a promising approach to selective introduction of nitrogen into hydrocarbon feedstock.

Abstract:The catalyst-free N-formylation of amines using CO2 as the C-1 source and BH3NH3 as the reductant has been developed for the first time. Abstract:Amines are commonly synthesized through the amination of organooxygenates using ammonia, frequently involving the use of noble metal catalysts. In this study, we first present an alternative route to make amines using iron nitride (Fe2.5N) as the nitrogen source. Without any additional catalyst, Fe2.5N reacts with a range of alcohols at 250 °C under 1 or 10 bar H2 to produce amines as major products. Mechanistic investigations indicate that hydrogen activates the nitrogen species within iron nitride, converting them into surface NH and NH2 groups that then react with alcohols to form amines. Building on this foundation, we further demonstrated an iron nitride-mediated chemical looping pathway that utilizes N2 as the nitrogen source to synthesize octylamines. In this process, N2 first reacts with iron to form FexN, which subsequently reacts with alcohols to yield amines, transferring over 80% of the nitrogen to organic compounds. This looping process remained stable across four cycles.

Abstract:Developing new efficient catalytic systems to convert abundant and renewable feedstocks into valuable products in a compact, flexible, and target-specific manner is of high importance in modern synthetic chemistry. Here, we describe a versatile set of mild catalytic conditions utilizing a single gold-based solid catalyst that enables the direct and additive-free preparation of four distinct and important amine derivatives (amines, formamides, benzimidazoles, and dimethlyated amines) from readily available formic acid (FA) and nitro starting materials with high level of chemoselectivity. By controlling the stoichiometry of the employed FA, which has attracted considerable interest in the area of sustainable chemistry because of its potential as an entirely renewable hydrogen carrier and as a versatile C-1 source, a facile atom-and step-efficient transformation of nitro compounds can be realized in a modular fashion.

Abstract:The development of efficient, cost-effective and heterogeneous catalysts for the valorization of CO2 to high-value chemicals is of vital importance in reducing CO2 emissions. Herein, single-atom Zn on bipyridine-based porous organic polymer was successfully fabricated through a facile copolymerization of divinyl-bipyridine and divinyl-benzene monomers, followed by complexation with Zn(OAc)2. The prepared materials with different concentrations of bipyridine moieties possessed large surface areas, hierarchical porosity, and strong coordination interaction between Zn(OAc)2 and the polymer scaffold. Catalytic evaluation demonstrated that the optimal single-atom Zn catalyst displayed extremely high catalytic performance towards the N-formylation of amines with CO2 and PhSiH3. Notably, under mild reaction conditions (30 °C, 1 bar CO2), a Zn loading as low as 0.5 mol‰ was sufficient for 94% yield of N-methylformanilide, with a record-high turnover frequency (TOF) of 376 h−1 compared to previously reported heterogeneous catalysts. Moreover, the solid catalyst could be easily recovered and reused for five cycles. Additionally, various amines could be efficiently transformed into corresponding formamide with moderate to high yields. The present work highlights a facile and cost-effective method for constructing highly efficient and recyclable single-atom metal catalysts for N-formylation of amines with CO2.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalysts with highly active and at the same time stable isolated metal sites constitute a key factor for the advancement of sustainable and cost-effective chemical synthesis. In particular, the development of more practical, and durable iron-based materials is of central interest for organic synthesis, especially for the preparation of chemical products related to life science applications. Here, we report the preparation of Fe-single atom catalysts (Fe-SACs) entrapped in N-doped mesoporous carbon support with unprecedented potential in the preparation of different kinds of amines. The synthetic protocol of Fe-SACs is based on primary pyrolysis of Fe-nitrogen complexes on SiO2 and subsequent removal of silica resulting in the formation of unique mesoporous N-doped carbon support with the pore size controlled by the size of the original silica nanoparticles. The resulting stable and reusable Fe-SACs allow for the reductive amination of a broad range of aldehydes and ketones with ammonia and amines to produce diverse primary, secondary, and tertiary amines including N-methylated products as well as drugs, agrochemicals, and other biomolecules (amino acid esters and amides) utilizing green hydrogen.

Abstract:In this research project, we first synthesized the magnetic manganese nanocatalyst by immobilizing the MnCl 2 on the surface of magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles modified with catechol and piperazine/phenanthroline ligand [Fe 3 O 4 @Catechol/PZ-Phen-MnCl 2 ], then we evaluated its catalytic performance in the synthesis of propargyl amines through the A 3 and KA 2 -coupling three-component reactions aromatic aldehydes or ketones, with alkynes, and amines. FT-IR, SEM, TEM, EDX, XRD, TGA, VSM, ICP-OES and elemental mapping analyzes confirmed the successful synthesis of Fe 3 O 4 @Catechol/PZ-Phen-MnCl 2 nanocatalyst. The results of the coupling reactions confirmed that the Fe 3 O 4 @Catechol/PZ-Phen-MnCl 2 nanocomposite is a very efficient catalyst for the preparation of various derivatives of propargyl amines. This method has significant features compared to the previous methods, which can be mentioned as follows: synthesis of products with very high efficiency, carrying out the reaction under mild conditions and compatible with the environment, using green and recyclable catalyst, can being applicable to a wide range of substrates and providing NMR analysis for all propargyl amine products.

Abstract:We report herein an iron-catalyzed azidotrifluoromethylation method for expedient vicinal trifluoromethyl primary-amine synthesis. This method is effective for a broad range of olefins and N-heterocycles, and it facilitates efficient synthesis of a wide variety of vicinal trifluoromethyl primary amines, including those that prove difficult to synthesize with existing approaches. Our preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that the catalyst-promoted azido-group transfer proceeds through a carbo-radical instead of a carbocation species. Characterization of an active iron catalyst through X-ray crystallographic studies suggests that in situ generated, structurally novel iron-azide complexes promote the oxidant activation and selective azido-group transfer.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO), an inexpensive, environment-friendly, and metal-free carbocatalyst, used for the N-formylation of amines is developed. In this reaction, GO shows good activity, selectivity, and recyclability. This strategy has an array of advantages, such as being metal free, without additive, wide-scope protocol, scalable with a low catalyst loading of 3 wt%, use of readily available and recyclable carbocatalyst, and DMF as a readily available formyl source. Furthermore, this strategy provides an avenue for the convenient hydroformylation of various amines.
