Abstract:Formic acid, as an easily available C1 source, can be obtained through CO2 hydrogenation or biomass smelting. For this perspective, N-formylation of amines with formic acid as the C1 synthon can be considered as indirect utilization of CO2 or biomass, thus providing an alternative synthetic strategy. In this work, we present a sustainable protocol for the N-formylation of amines using formic acid as the carbonyl source under catalyst-free conditions. This procedure yields medium to excellent results for various formamides. Furthermore, we successfully extended this protocol to include the reduction coupling of formic acid, primary amines, and aldehydes, demonstrating broad substrate applicability.

Abstract:We describe herein an efficient and catalyst-free methodology for N-formylation and N-methylation of various amines using BH3N(C2H5)(3) as a reductant and CO2 as C1 source. This system is compatible with a wide range of substrates, such as aromatic secondary amines, aliphatic secondary amines, heterocyclic amines, and primary amines. The desired methylamines and formamides are obtained in excellent yields by changing the reaction solvent, temperature, and the amount of BH3N(C2H5)(3). The optimum yields of methylamines and formamides are up to 99 %, which are comparable to the data using different catalysts. Moreover, it has been demonstrated by mechanistic research that CO2 was activated by inserting into B-H bonds of BH3N(C2H5)(3) and formamide can be regarded as an intermediate species during the N-methylation formation.

Abstract:The growing emphasis on sustainable chemistry has driven research into utilizing carbon dioxide (CO2) as a nontoxic, abundant, and cost‐effective C1 building block. CO2 offers a promising avenue for direct conversion into valuable chemicals ranging from fuels to pharmaceuticals. This review focuses on the utilization of CO2 for reductive N‐formylation/N‐methylation reactions of various amines, providing advantages over conventional methods involving toxic CO and other methylating reagents. The approach employs readily available reductants such as silane, borane reagents, and hydrogen (H2). The discussion encompasses recent developments in transition metal and organocatalyst systems for these reactions, highlighting mechanistic interpretations and factors influencing product selectivity.

Abstract:The valorization of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to fine chemicals is one of the most promising approaches for CO 2 capture and utilization. Herein we demonstrated a series of porous organometallic polymers could be employed as highly efficient and recyclable catalysts for this purpose. Synergetic effects of specific surface area, iridium content, and CO 2 adsorption capability are crucial to achieve excellent selectivity and yields towards N‐formylation of diverse amines with CO 2 and H 2 under mild reaction conditions even at 20 ppm catalyst loading. Density functional theory calculations revealed not only a redox‐neutral catalytic pathway but also a new plausible mechanism with the incorporation of the key intermediate formic acid via a proton‐relay process. Remarkably, a record turnover number (TON=1.58×10 6 ) was achieved in the synthesis of N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF), and the solid catalysts can be reused up to 12 runs, highlighting their practical potential in industry.

The N-methylation of amines was carried out with CO2 as a C-1 building block and 1,4-dioxane as the solvent. Notably, the six-electron reduction of CO2 to form the methyl group occurred simultaneously with formation of the C-N bond to give the N-methylated amine.

Abstract:N-Methyl amines play a major role in the production of medicines, pesticides, surfactants and dyes. N-Methylation of primary or second amines with methanol is considered to be a green path for the synthesis of N-methyl amines and the catalyst is key. In this article, the combined Al2O3-mordenite catalyst (mass fraction of alumina is 40%) with good activity, selectivity, lifetime and stability was prepared for N-methylation of various amines with methanol in a hydrogen free system in a fixed bed reactor, and characterized by XRD, N-2 adsorption and NH3-TPD. Furthermore, the methanol adsorption was investigated by in situ FTIR, and the result indicated that methoxyl species may be the active species for the N-methylation of amines.

Abstract:The creation of specific catalytic functionalities in the nanocarbon materials is an important approach to develop the metal-free nanocarbon materials (carbocatalysts). We report herein a functionalization strategy by treatment of N-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNT) with ozone/water to create oxygen groups nearby the N groups (N-C=O). These groups, different from those present in conventionally oxidized NCNT, show peculiar catalytic behavior. The N atom adjacent to carbonyl group (N-C=O) modifies the reactivity of carbonyl towards C-H activation and simultaneously activate O-2 molecule for bifunctionality. Efficient performance for oxidative coupling of benzylamine to imine (>99% imine selectivity) can be obtained under solvent-free conditions at ambient pressure. The benzylamine productivity reaches as high as 131.3 mmol m(-2) h(-1), which is the highest among any other reported carbon-based catalysts. This work not only highlights a sustainable strategy for tuned surface chemistry of carbon materials by using mild ozonation process, but also reports a novel green aerobic synthesis method of benzylamine using tailored metal-free carbon nanomaterials. Single-atom Zn on bipyridine-functionalized porous organic polymers towards highly efficient N-formylation of amines with CO2 under mild conditions

Abstract:The development of efficient, cost-effective and heterogeneous catalysts for the valorization of CO2 to high-value chemicals is of vital importance in reducing CO2 emissions. Herein, single-atom Zn on bipyridine-based porous organic polymer was successfully fabricated through a facile copolymerization of divinyl-bipyridine and divinyl-benzene monomers, followed by complexation with Zn(OAc)2. The prepared materials with different concentrations of bipyridine moieties possessed large surface areas, hierarchical porosity, and strong coordination interaction between Zn(OAc)2 and the polymer scaffold. Catalytic evaluation demonstrated that the optimal single-atom Zn catalyst displayed extremely high catalytic performance towards the N-formylation of amines with CO2 and PhSiH3. Notably, under mild reaction conditions (30 °C, 1 bar CO2), a Zn loading as low as 0.5 mol‰ was sufficient for 94% yield of N-methylformanilide, with a record-high turnover frequency (TOF) of 376 h−1 compared to previously reported heterogeneous catalysts. Moreover, the solid catalyst could be easily recovered and reused for five cycles. Additionally, various amines could be efficiently transformed into corresponding formamide with moderate to high yields. The present work highlights a facile and cost-effective method for constructing highly efficient and recyclable single-atom metal catalysts for N-formylation of amines with CO2.

Abstract:The selective synthesis of monomethylated amines with CO2 is particularly challenging because the formation of tertiary amines is thermodynamically more favorable. Herein, a new strategy for the controllable synthesis of N-monomethylated amines from primary amines and CO2 /H2 is explored. First-principle calculations reveal that the dissociation of H2 via an heterolytic route reduces the reactivity of methylated amines and thus inhibit successive methylation. In situ DRIFTS proves the process of formation and decomposition of ammonium salt by secondary amine reversible binding with H+ on the Ag/Al2 O3 catalyst, thereby reducing its reactivity. Meanwhile, the energy barrier for the rate-determining step of monomethylation was much lower than that of overmethylation (0.34 eV vs. 0.58 eV) means amines monomethylation in preference to successive methylation. Under optimal reaction conditions, a variety of amines were converted to the corresponding monomethylated amines in good to excellent yields, and more than 90 % yield of product was obtained.

Abstract:The formylation and methylation of amines with carbon dioxide and hydrosilanes are emerging yet important types of transformations for CO2. Catalytic methods effective for both reactions with wide substrate scopes are rare because of the difficulty in controlling the selectivity. Herein, we report that simple and readily available inorganic bases—alkali-metal carbonates, especially cesium carbonate—catalyze both the formylation and methylation reactions efficiently under mild conditions. The selectivity can be conveniently controlled by varying the reaction temperature and silane. A “cesium effect” on both reactions was observed by comparing the catalytic activity of various alkali-metal carbonates. Combined experimental and computational studies suggested the following reaction mechanism: (i) activation of Si–H by Cs2CO3, (ii) insertion of CO2 into Si–H, (iii) formylation of amines by silyl formate, and (iv) reduction of formamides to methylamines.

Abstract:Transformation of carbon dioxide into valuable chemicals has been an important goal of green chemistry and sustainable development of chemistry due to its contribution to the carbon cycle in the environment. Currently, many challenges, such as low efficiency and low atom utilization, have been encountered in the direct conversion of CO 2 into energy or chemicals. Notably, application of CO 2 as a carbon source in the synthesis of fine chemicals seems to be a highly efficient strategy to fully utilize it. In this case, the N -formylation reactions of amines and CO 2 toward formamides have attracted attention since formamides are very important intermediates in the synthesis of medicines and various organic compounds and can also be used as solvents. Herein, this review summarizes the recent significant advances in the last decade in the preparation, characterization, and evaluation of various types of catalysts including homogeneous and heterogeneous systems applied in N -formylation reactions. We emphasize the diversity in catalyst performances and the fundamental understanding of catalytic mechanisms. It is anticipated that this review will provide future research perspectives for catalyst design rules for catalytic N -formylation reactions of CO 2 hydrogenation coupled with amines.

Abstract:One of the NHC-iridium coordination assemblies containing 1,5-cyclooctadiene (COD) and iodide ion has been demonstrated as robust, efficient, recyclable solid molecular catalyst for N-formylation of diverse primary and secondary amines with CO2 and H2 under mild reaction conditions. Remarkably, in the case of N,N-dimethylformamide production, even at 0.1 mol % catalyst loading under solvent-free conditions, the solid catalyst can be readily recovered by simply filtration and reused more than 10 runs without noticeable loss of activity.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide was one of the main green-house gas, using CO2 as a C1 source to produce functional chemicals can relieve environmental issues. With the development of the N-formylation reaction of amines under a CO2 atmosphere, a promising route for the synthesis of diacylhydrazines is the N-formylation of hydrazide with CO2 in the presence of a reducing agent. Triethylamine (TEA) is an organic base commonly used in organic synthesis, which has a low boiling point to easily separated from the system by decompression distillation. We herein describe TEA- catalyzed selective N-formylation of amines/ hydrazide using CO2 and NaBH4 to construct various formamide and N '-formyl-hydrazide. Utilizing N-formylation of amines reaction to tune the reaction solvent, base, and temperature given a lower boiling catalyst and solvent system and the product can be separated easily. The selective synthesis method of formamides is achieved in good yields, which is also equally adapted to hydrazides. Finally, 1,3,4-oxadiazole skeleton having synthetic drugs and material application was obtained by cyclization of N '-formyl-hydrazide.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) was found to serve as a novel and green catalyst for the first time in N-formylation of amines with N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF), wherein only the aliphatic amines were applicable to afford the formamides in the yield of 71∼95%. The isotope labeling experiment with DMF-d7 indicated that the N-formyl group in the formylated product was originated from DMF rather than CO2. The control experiments and the in situ high-pressure FT-IR spectra demonstrated that the formation of the carbamate salt of cyclohexylammonium cyclohexylcarbamate (A) derived from the reaction of CO2 with cyclohexylamine was the driving force for this reaction. Accordingly, the mechanism of CO2-catalyed N-formylation of aliphatic amines with DMF was proposed, involving the formation of carbamate salt intermediate with enhanced nucleophilicity in anion in favor of the attack on carbonyl-group of DMF.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO), an inexpensive, environment-friendly, and metal-free carbocatalyst, used for the N-formylation of amines is developed. In this reaction, GO shows good activity, selectivity, and recyclability. This strategy has an array of advantages, such as being metal free, without additive, wide-scope protocol, scalable with a low catalyst loading of 3 wt%, use of readily available and recyclable carbocatalyst, and DMF as a readily available formyl source. Furthermore, this strategy provides an avenue for the convenient hydroformylation of various amines.

Abstract:An efficient heterogeneous catalytic system for the N‐formylation of amines using CO2 as the sustainable C1 source was developed using unsupported nanoporous palladium (PdNPore). The PdNPore‐catalyzed N‐formylation of amines and CO2 with hydrosilane proceeded smoothly under mild reaction conditions to yield formamides in satisfactory to excellent yields. It is the first example of PdNPore‐catalyzed CO2 conversion to form C−N bond, which enriches the reaction types of CO2 conversion catalyzed by nanoporous palladium catalyst.An efficient heterogeneous catalytic system for the N‐formylation of amines using CO2 as a sustainable C1 source was developed using unsupported nanoporous palladium (PdNPore). This study is the first to demonstrate that PdNPore catalyzed CO2 conversion to form C−N bond, which enriches the reaction types of CO2 conversion catalyzed by PdNPore catalyst.
