Abstract:The Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne click polymerization has become a powerful tool for the preparation of functional polytriazoles. However, copper residues in the products could harm the performance of optoelectronic devices and be cytotoxic in biological applications. The complete removal of these residues after reaction from the polymers is therefore necessary but difficult. The metal-free azide-alkyne click polymerization (MFCP) provides a solution to this problem. Currently, the MFCP is facilitated by activated alkynes, and no activated comonomer, i.e. azide, has been reported. In this paper, an activated azide, 4,4'-diazidoperfluorobenzophenone , was designed and synthesized. Compared to the ordinary azide, such a monomer can remarkably accelerate the MFCP with alkynes. Thus, a new MFCP of activated azide and alkyne was established, and polytriazoles with high regioregularity (fraction of 1,4-isomer higher than 82%) and satisfactory molecular weights (M-w up to 34 000) were produced in high yields (up to 95.1%).

Abstract:An air-stable supported Cu(I) catalyst, CuI@PS-Phen, was designed and synthesized. CuI@PS-Phen can efficiently catalyze the click polymerization of diynes a and diazides b to produce soluble and thermally stable polytriazoles with high molecular weights ( M w up to 30800), and low copper residue content (down to 190 ppm) in high yields (up to 94.2%) under mild reaction conditions without the exclusion of oxygen.

Abstract:The anionic polytriazole PI with a weight-average molecular weight of 190 300 was facilely and directly prepared in an excellent yield of 98.1% in 6 h by the well-established Cu(I)-catalyzed click polymerization of 4,4'-diazido-2,2'-stilbenedisulfonic acid disodium salt hydrate (1) and AIE-active tetraphenylethene (TPE)-containing diyne (2) under mild reaction conditions. PI is soluble in high polar solvents, and thermally stable with 5% loss of its weight at temperatures higher than 290 degrees C. The photo-physical property investigation showed that PI possesses the unique feature of aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE). By taking this feature, PI could be used for the specific detection of aluminum ions with a threshold as low as 31 ppb, which could potentially be used for strict drinking water purity control of the aluminum ion content.

Abstract:The metal-free click polymerizations (MFCPs) of activated alkynes and azides have become a powerful technique for the preparation of functional polytriazoles. Recently, a new MFCP of activated azide and alkyne has been established, but no functional polytriazole is prepared. In this paper, polytriazole PIa with aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) characteristics is prepared by this efficient polymerization in excellent yield (97.9%). PIa is thermally stable, with 5% loss of its weight at temperature as high as 440 °C. Thanks to its unique AEE feature of PIa, its nanoaggregates can be used to detect explosives with a superamplification quenching effect.

Abstract:Polyaniline nanotube was prepared with aid of lactic acid assembly. A chemical prototype sensor was constructed based on nanotube-structured polyaniline and two typical structured chemical sensors, one is an interdigital electrodes on flexible polymer substrate, the other is a highly sensitive quartz resonators. The gas-sensing behavior of the two typical sensors to some organic vapors operating at room temperature was investigated. Results showed rapid response, and good reversibility of these two typical sensors. The response time is 10-20 s, the reversible time is about 100 s. This study provides a simple approach for preparation of materials needed for a chemical sensor to selected organic volatiles with rapid response or organic flexible nanoelectronic devices.

Abstract:The metal-free click polymerization (MFCP) of activated alkynes and azides or activated azide and alkynes have been developed into powerful techniques for the construction of polytriazoles without the obsession of metallic catalyst residues problem. However, the MFCP of activated azides and alkynes is rarely applied in preparation of functional polytriazoles. In this paper, soluble multifunctional polytriazoles (PIa and PIb) with high weight-average molecular weights (Mw up to 32 000) are prepared via the developed metal-free poly-cycloaddition of activated azide and alkynes in high yields (up to 90%). The resultant PIa and PIb are thermally stable, and show aggregation-induced emission characteristics, enabling their aggregates to detect explosives with superamplification effect. Moreover, thanks to their containing aromatic rings and polar moieties, PIa and PIb exhibit high refractive indices. In addition, they can also be cross-linked upon UV irradiation to generate 2D fluorescent patterning due to their remaining azide groups and containing ester groups. Thus, these multifunctional poly- triazoles are potentially applicable in the optoelectronic and sensing fields.

Abstract:.Azide-alkyne click polymerization is generally catalyzed by the Cu(I) complex, in which the removal of metallic residues after reaction remains challengeable. In this work, a metal-free click polymerization method was developed to avoid this problem. The diazide monomers (9 and 10) could readily react with aromatic and aliphatic dipropiolates (1 and 2) under simple heating to produce functional poly(aroxycarbonyltriazole)s (PACTs), a kind of polyester, with high molecular weights (M-w up to 23 500) and regioregularities (fraction of 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazole in polymers up to similar to 90%) in excellent yields (up to similar to 99%). The metal-free click polymerization also propagates smoothly in an open atmosphere without protection from oxygen and moisture. The PACTs are thermally stable, with 5% loss of their weights at temperatures higher than 335 degrees C. Thanks to the contained ester groups, the polymers can be rapidly degraded in the presence of potassium hydroxide aqueous solution. The PACT containing tetraphenylethene units exhibits a unique feature of aggregation-induced emission and can function as a fluorescent chemosensor to detect explosives in a superamplified manner.

Abstract:The "thio-click" polymerization is a well-expanded concept of click polymerization. Among the click polymerizations, the thiol-yne click polymerization is less developed and still in its infancy stage. In general, UV light, elevated temperature, amine, or transition metal complexes is needed to catalyze the thiol-yne click polymerization, which greatly complicates the experimental operation and limits its application. In this work, a facile and powerful thiol-yne click polymerization was developed, which could be carried out under very mild conditions without using external catalyst. Simply mixing the aromatic diynes (1a-1e) and dithiols (2-4) with equivalent molar ratio in THF at 30 degrees C will readily produce soluble and regioregular functional poly(vinylene sulfide)s (PIa-PIe, PII, and PIII) with high molecular weights (M-w, up to 85 200) in excellent yields (up to 97%) after as short as 2 h. Furthermore, no double addition product of an ethynyl group was found. This catalyst-free thiol-yne click polymerization has remarkably simplified the reaction conditions and will facilitate the preparation of functional materials applied in diverse areas.

Abstract:The click polymerization has emerged as a powerful tool for the synthesis of functional polymers. Among the reported click polymerizations, the Cu(I)- and Ru(II)-catalyzed azide-alkyne ones have received considerable attention. To further develop such click polymerization, a new catalyst is desirable. In this work, we used Cp2Ni/Xantphos/Cs2CO3 to catalyze the azide-alkyne click polymerization (NiAACP) under mild conditions, and 1,5-regioregular polytriazoles (PTAs) with weight-average molecular weights as high as 67,900 were produced in high yields (up to 96.7%) in only 30 min. The obtained PTAs process high thermal stability, and their glass-transition temperatures range from 38.9 to 168.0 degrees C. The relationship between the polymer structures and their refractive indices was also investigated. Moreover, PTAs with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features and chirality were produced through the incorporation of the AIE moiety of tetraphenylethene and the chiral moiety of 2,2 '-substituted 1,1 '-binaphthyl into the polymer chains, respectively, indicative of the great potential of the NiAACP in constructing functional polymeric materials.

Abstract:The azide-alkyne click polymerization (AACP) has emerged as a powerful tool for the synthesis of functional polytriazoles. While, for the Cu(I)-catalyzed AACP, the removal of the catalytic Cu(I) species from the resulting polytriazoles is difficult, and the research on the recyclability and reusability of the catalyst remains intact. Herein, we reported the first example of using recyclable and reusable supported Cu(I) catalyst of CuI@A-21 for the AACP. CuI@A-21 could not only efficiently catalyze the AACP but also be reused for at least 4 cycles. Moreover, pronounced reduction of copper residues in the products was achieved. Apart from being a green and cost-effective polymer synthesis strategy, this method will also broaden the application of AACP in material and biological sciences and provide guidelines for other polymerizations with metal catalysts.

Abstract:The metal-free click polymerization (MFCP) of azide and alkyne has become a powerful tool for the synthesis of functional polytriazoles. Among which, the MFCP of propiolate and azide has been used to prepare functional linear poly(aroxycarbonyltriazole)s (PACTs). Their hyperbranched analogues, however, have been rarely prepared In this paper, hyperbranched PACTs with satisfactory molecular weights and high regioregularities were synthesized in high yields by the MFCP of tripropiolates (1) and tetraphenylethene (TPE)-containing diazide (2) under the optimized reaction conditions without protection from oxygen and moisture. The resultant polymers are soluble in common organic solvents and thermally stable, with 5% loss of their weights at temperatures higher than 330 degrees C. The polymers exhibit high refractive indices with low chromatic dispersion. Thanks to their contained TPE units, the polymers show the unique feature of aggregation induced emission, and their aggregates can function as fluorescent sensors for the detection of explosives with the superamplification quenching effect Furthermore, the polymers can be readily photo-cross-linked, yielding two-dimensional fluorescent patterns with high resolution.

Abstract:A novel AB type of clickable monomer, (S)-2-[(2-azido- 1-phenylethylimino)methyl]-5-propargyloxyphenol (AMPP) was designed and polymerized to yield a class of main-chain chiral poly(imine-triazole)(s) through the metal-free click reaction. With the thermally induced polymerization, the desired polytriazoles can be easily prepared in high yields by a stepwise heating-up process and have the number-average molecular masses ranging from 5.1 x 10(3) to 58.1 x 10(3) (polydispersity indices = 1.38-1.68). The polymers were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), H-1 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), and gel permeation chromatography, and their optical properties were studied by fluorescence and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopies. As a chemosensor, these polymers exhibited a selective "turn-on" fluorescence enhance-ment response toward Zn2+ ion over other cations such as Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Ag+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Mn2+, and Ni2+ in dimethyl sulfoxide. However, the Zn2+ -induced fluorescence signal was subject to serious interference by Al3+, Cu2+, Cr3+, and Fe3+ ions. Interestingly, the chiral polymer showed distinctive changes in the CD spectra on complexation with Zn2+, which allowed for the discrimination of this ion in the presence of other species tested including those interfering ions observed in the fluorescent detection. Abstract:Regioselective 1,3-dipolar polycycloadditions of tetraphenylethene (TPE)-containing diazides 1-3 and bis(aroylacetylene) 4 are initiated by simple heating, affording poly(aroyltriazole)s (PATAs) PI-PIII with high molecular weights in high yields. The PATAs are completely soluble in common organic solvents and stable at temperatures up to 358 degrees C. Thanks to their TPE units, the polymers show aggregation-induced emission and work as explosive sensors with high sensitivity. The PATAs are optically transparent in the whole visible spectral region. Their refractive indexes can be tuned to a great extent (Delta n approximate to 0.08) by simply changing their alkyl spacer lengths. The modified Abbe numbers of the PATAs are very high (up to 273), indicative of very low optical dispersions in the telecommunication-important wavelength region. UV irradiation through a photomask quenches the light emissions of the polymers, enabling the generation of two-dimensional fluorescent images without development. The polymers can be readily photo-crosslinked, yielding three-dimensional patterns with high resolutions.

Abstract:The Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne click polymerization is well developed and broadly applied to the preparation of functional polymers. The removal of copper residues from the resultant polymers is, however, difficult. One way to completely circumvent this difficulty is to develop click polymerization without the use of metallic catalysts, i.e., metal-free click polymerization (MFCP). Herein, recent efforts towards developing MFCP of activated alkynes and azides, and of activated azides and alkynes, to produce regioregular polytriazoles are summarized, and the properties and applications of the resultant polymers are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:Biphenyl-containing diazides and diynes carrying tetraphenylethylene units are designed and synthesized. Their "click" polymerizations are initiated by Cu(PPh3)(3)Br in THF or DMF, affording soluble, regioregular polytriazoles in high yields (up to 94.8%) with narrow molecular weight distributions. The structures and properties of the polymers are evaluated and characterized by IR, NMR, UV, PL, TGA, DSC, POM and XRD measurements. All the polymers are almost nonluminescent when dissolved in solutions but become highly emissive when aggregated in poor solvents or fabricated as thin films in the solid state, displaying a novel phenomenon of aggregation-induced emission. The photophysical properties of the polymers are sensitive to their molecular structures and their solid-state quantum yields decrease with an increase in the spacer length. All the polymers enjoy high thermal stability, with 5% weight loss occurring at temperatures up to 406 degrees C. They are mesomorphic. While polymers with rigid main chains exhibit nematicity, those with longer spacer lengths show better mesogenic packing and hence form sematic phases at higher temperatures.

Abstract:The transition-metal catalyzed and metal-free click polymerizations have been developed as powerful tools for the construction of functional polymers with linear and hyperbranched structures. The latter provides a thorough solution for the completely removing metallic residues from the products encountered in the former. Compared to the activated alkyne-azide metal-free click polymerization, the activated azide-alkyne one is rarely studied. In this Communication, a perfluorophenyl-activated azide of hexane-1,6-diyl-bis(4-azido-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzoate) is rationally designed and facilely prepared. Through systematical optimization of the reaction conditions, an efficient metal-free perfluorophenylazide-alkyne polycycloaddition is established, and polytriazoles with high molecular weights (up to 166 000) and excellent solubility are obtained in excellent yields (up to 93%) under mild reaction conditions. Interestingly, the regioselectivity of the reaction could be fine-tuned by the solvents and diyne monomers. Therefore, this work provides not only a powerful tool for the preparation of functional polytriazoles, but also an attractive method for fine-tuning their regioregularity.

Abstract:Nitrile compounds are abundant, stable, cheap, and readily available natural and chemical industrial sources. However, the efficient conversion of nitrile monomers to functional polymers is mostly limited due to their inert reactivity, and developing efficient polymerizations based on nitrile monomers under very mild conditions is still a big challenge. In this work, a facile and powerful base-catalyzed acetonitrile-azide click polymerization was successfully established under ambient conditions. This polymerization also enjoys the merits of short reaction time (15 min), 100% atom economy, transition-metal-free catalyst system, and regioselectivity. A series of poly(5-amino-1,2,3-triazole)s (PATAs) with high weight-average molecular weights (Mw, up to 204,000) were produced in excellent yields (up to 99%). The PATAs containing tetraphenylethene (TPE) moieties exhibit unique aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics, which could be used to sensitively detect Fe(III) ions with a low limit of detection (1.205 × 10-7 M) and to specifically image lysosomes of living cells. Notably, PATAs could be facilely post-modified due to their containing primary amino groups in the polymer chains even through a one-pot tandem reaction. Thus, this work not only establishes a new powerful click polymerization to convert stable nitriles but also generates a series of PATAs with versatile properties for diverse applications.
Facile Crosslinking of Polythiophenes by Polyethylenimine Via Ester Aminolysis for Selective Cu(II) Detection in Water.

Abstract:Functionalization of π-conjugated polymers is dispensable for solubilization of the rigid and hydrophobic backbones in water. However, polymer aggregation is always present and leads to issues with complication and reproducibility in spectral properties. Herein, we reported a simple and robust method to make a series of conjugated polymer nanostructures by a crosslinking strategy. In favor of multivalency effect, polythionenes with various chain lengths were functionalized with branched polyethylenimine (PEI) via ester aminolysis reaction under mild conditions. Photophysical studies revealed the conjugated backbones could be well stabilized and dispersed in water. By taking advantage of intermolecular recognition interaction between copper ions and cationic PEI, we applied crosslinked polythiophenes as a nano probe at very low concentration (0.01 mg/mL) to fluorescently detect copper ions with high sensitivity up to 10 nM and selectivity over other metal ions in aqueous solutions, without occurrence of detectable aggregates. The overall performance of our nano probes outperforms reported water-soluble polymers-based probes, particularly in probe availability and manipulation as well as selective copper detection capability.

Abstract:Triazole is a Bronsted acidic heterocyclic molecule that can be easily functionalized and is already produced industrially. Amino group has been proven to be a promising substitute to construct functionalized ILs for task-specific applications. In this work, a serious of novel functionalized ILs based on 3-amino-1,2,4-triazolate and 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazolate (1-6) were synthesized and characterized by IR, NMR and HRMS. Based on the results of DSC and TGA analyses, all of the prepared compounds are thermally stable, with decomposition temperatures over 210°C. A handy paper sensor based on 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazolate (6) was designed and successfully applied for the colorimetric detection of H2O2. The response of sensing device toward H2O2 exhibited visualization and rapidity, which is promising for on-site identification of peroxide-based explosives.
