Abstract:We propose a novel randomized channel sparsifying hybrid precoding (RCSHP) design to reduce the signaling overhead of channel estimation and the hardware cost and power consumption at the base station (BS), in order to fully harvest benefits of frequency division duplex (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. RCSHP allows time-sharing among multiple analog precoders, each serving a compatible user group. The analog precoder is adapted to the channel statistics to properly sparsify the channel for the associated user group, such that the resulting effective channel (product of channel and analog precoder) not only has enough spatial degrees of freedom (DoF) to serve this group of users, but also can be accurately estimated under the limited pilot budget. The digital precoder is adapted to the effective channel based on the duality theory to facilitate the power allocation and exploit the spatial multiplexing gain. We formulate the joint optimization of the time-sharing factors and the associated sets of analog precoders and power allocations as a general utility optimization problem, which considers the impact of effective channel estimation error on the system performance. Then we propose an efficient stochastic successive convex approximation algorithm to provably obtain Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) points of this problem.

Abstract:An improved joint carrier recovery and adaptive equalization algorithm for high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is proposed. It combines a dual-mode adaptive equalization algorithm and an optimal frequency/phase detection algorithm which operate in an optimal four-step sequence. Computer simulation and FPGA implementation demonstrate that this algorithm is robust even under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and is especially suitable for high-order QAM receivers. The algorithm can acquire a carrier frequency offset up to 300 kHz at 256QAM over typical coaxial cable channels.

Abstract:We introduce and experimentally demonstrate a modified Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver with direct detection (DD) to realize an accurate optical field reconstruction at low carrier-to-signal power ratio (CSPR) condition. In our scheme, an exponential operation is applied to a single-sideband (SSB) signal, rather than a continuous-wave tone adding method in the conventional KK scheme. By this means, the minimum phase condition (MPC) is inherently satisfied, thus the optical field can be reconstructed accurately through KK relation at a low CSPR, leading to a high receiver sensitivity in a DD system. A proof-of-concept experiment is conducted, in which an SSB signal is generated based on an 8-GBaud 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) data stream and then is transmitted over an 80-km single mode fiber (SMF). By using the modified KK technique, 1.1- and 0.9-dB sensitivity improvements are achieved in the optical back-to-back and after the fiber transmission cases, respectively. The proposed and the conventional KK schemes show similar BER performances at the optimum CSPR value with a high received optical power. In addition, we perform numerical simulations to study the impacts of bandwidth limitation and chromatic dispersion on the proposed minimum phase signal.

Abstract:Benefited from the advances of deep learning (DL) techniques, deep joint source-channel coding (JSCC) has shown its great potential to improve the performance of wireless transmission. However, most of the existing works focus on the DL-based transceiver design of the JSCC model, while ignoring the resource allocation problem in wireless systems. In this paper, we consider a downlink resource allocation problem, where a base station (BS) jointly optimizes the compression ratio (CR) and power allocation as well as resource block (RB) assignment of each user according to the latency and performance constraints to maximize the number of users that successfully receive their requested content with desired quality. To solve this problem, we first decompose it into two subproblems without loss of optimality. The first subproblem is to minimize the required transmission power for each user under given RB allocation. We derive the closed-form expression of the optimal transmit power by searching the maximum feasible compression ratio. The second one aims at maximizing the number of supported users through optimal user-RB pairing, which is solved by utilizing bisection search as well as interior-point algorithm. To reduce the computational complexity, we propose a heuristic greedy algorithm to obtain a simplified problem. Then the Bregman alternating direction method of multipliers (BADMM) based algorithm is adopted to decompose the simplified problem into several subproblems that can be computed in parallel. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed resource allocation methods in terms of the number of satisfied users with given resources. It is also shown that the BADMM-based algorithm can significantly reduce the computational complexity and retain high performance.

Abstract:We present an optimized joint source and channel bit allocation approach for achieving better video constructed quality subject to a given bits consumption, by exploiting data partitioning and LDPC We assign different bits of forward error correction to data partition with different priority by jointly considering the source and channel distortion with hill climbing search algorithm. Abstract:With the increasing demand of bandwidth, a higher capacity communication system is required for optical short link and access network. Intensity modulationdirect detection (IM-DD) is considered as a reasonable method in access network, due to its low cost and power consumption. However, it reduces the spectral efficiency compared with IQ modulation. In addition, single-sideband (SSB) signal occupies less bandwidth than double-sideband signal (DSB). However, SSB systems suffer from signal-signal beat interference (SSBI) from photodiodes (PDs). Recently, KramersKronig (KK) receiver is proposed to mitigate SSBI. Meanwhile, single-sideband (SSB) signal is the prerequisite for KK scheme, and this kind of signal is also tolerant to fiber chromatic dispersion and multipath-fading. On the other hand, free-space optical (FSO) communication is becoming a promising candidate for next generation optical access network. Thus we experimentally demonstrate the KK scheme in 20km SSMF and 20m FSO links with both single carrier signal and multicarrier signal. We compare the performance between them with and without pre-equalization (pre-EQ). With the help of probabilistically shaped (PS) mapping to gives an increase in the sensitivity over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). We reach a 117bits transmission with a spectral efficiency of 5.85bitsHz of 20Ghz bandwidth with single modulator and single photodiode (PD) in fiber-FSO system.

Abstract:We propose and investigate the use of a Kramers–Kronig (KK) receiver in a single sideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing radio over fiber (SSB-OFDM-RoF) link based on an optical remote heterodyne solution. This scheme is effective in eliminating the signal-to-signal beating interference introduced by square-law detection of a photo-detector in an SSB-OFDM-RoF link. We extensively study the influences of different carrier-to-signal power ratios (CSPRs), laser linewidths, and transmission distances on our proposed scheme. It is proved that the KK-based receiver can reduce optimal CSPR by more than 5 dB and provide about 1.1 dB gain over the conventional mixer-based receiver scheme with CSPR of 11 dB after 75 km fiber transmission.

Abstract:A cost-effective and robust digital signal processing (DSP) scheme is proposed and demonstrated experimentally in a coherent 61 GBaud PDM 16QAM system. In our scheme, multi-stage DSP blocks are used to deal with channel effects, transceiver in-phase and quadrature (IQ) skew, and phase noise. A 4×4 real-valued multiple-input multiple-output (RV-MIMO) with N1 taps is for polarization recovery and receiver IQ skew calibration. After frequency offset compensation, two 2×2 RV-MIMO with N2 taps are used to compensate for chromatic dispersion (CD), inter-symbol interference, transmitter IQ skew, and phase noise. Finally, the residual phase noise is eliminated by the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator. The experimental results indicate that the proposed scheme provides better received optical power sensitivity and CD tolerance than the existing simplified DSP schemes. In addition, the proposed scheme can tolerate transmitter IQ skew up to 7 ps in a 10 km case, which outperforms both simplified and conventional DSP schemes. Meanwhile, the proposed scheme can keep the same transceiver IQ skew and CD tolerance and has reduced complexity by 25% after 10 km links, compared to 4×4 RV-MIMO followed by a transmitter skew compensator. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed scheme is the most cost-effective solution for a high baud rate datacenter interconnects where transmitter IQ skew and CD have to be dealt with.

Abstract:As PON systems move towards terabit/s aggregated data rates with longer transmission distance, optical coherent receivers become preferred due to their high tolerance to power fading from fiber transmission. To solve the high complexity and high cost problems of optical coherent receivers, a scheme for complex QAM signal transmission with simple direct detection is recommended in this paper. The scheme based on optical SSB modulation with frequency-shifted QAM signals and low-cost single-ended PD provides an efficient low-cost solution for long reach coherent PON. Due to its minimum phase property of the optical SSB modulated signal, Kramers-Kronig scheme can be used to reconstruct the complex QAM signal from the received intensity signal. The efficiency of the proposed scheme is validated by both numerical simulations and experiments for both QPSK and 16-QAM modulated signals. By using standard commercially available components, the experiments demonstrated that the combination of SSB modulation of frequency-shifted QAM signal and its single-ended PD receiver with KK scheme can support SSMF transmission over 75 km for both QPSK and 16-QAM signals with receiver optical power penalty less than 1.5 dB.

Abstract:For the discrete spectrum nonlinear frequency division multiplexing (DS-NFDM) 16/64 amplitude phase shift keying (APSK) system, the inevitable laser impairments including frequency offset (FO) and carrier phase noise (CPN) would cause different rotations of the received signal constellations. In addition, the combined effect of FO and amplifier spontaneous emission (ASE) noise induces the eigenvalue shift, accordingly the residual channel impairment (RCI) is inevitably yielded. To address the above problems, we deduce the joint impairment model of FO, CPN and RCI, and then propose a joint equalization scheme using two-stage cascaded extended Kalman filter (TSC-EKF) for these impairments. It performs frequency offset compensation in the first stage, subsequently carries out joint equalization of CPN and RCI in the second stage. Meanwhile, the minimum Euclidean distance and phase difference between the received symbols and the ideal 16/64APSK constellations are ingeniously fused to calculate the innovations of TSC-EKF. The effectiveness has been verified by 2 GBaud DS-NFDM 16/64 APSK simulations and DS-NFDM 16APSK transmission experiments. The results demonstrate that when performing the joint equalization of FO, CPN and RCI, the maximum FOE range of TSC-EKF scheme achieves 1.2 and 9.6 times as that of nonlinear frequency domain (NFD) scheme and fast Fourier transform -Like (FFT-Like) scheme, respectively. Furthermore, its maximum LW tolerance reaches 3.3 times as that of the M -th power scheme. Importantly, the complexity of TSC-EKF is 63.4% as that of NFD scheme and on an order of O ( N ).

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem of joint transceiver design for millimeter wave (mmWave)/Terahertz (THz) multi-user MIMO integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. Such a problem is formulated into a nonconvex optimization problem, with the objective of maximizing a weighted sum of communication users' rates and the passive radar's signal-to-clutter-and-noise-ratio (SCNR). By exploring a low-dimensional subspace property of the optimal precoder, a low-complexity block-coordinate-descent (BCD)-based algorithm is proposed. Our analysis reveals that the hybrid analog/digital beamforming structure can attain the same performance as that of a fully digital precoder, provided that the number of radio frequency (RF) chains is no less than the number of resolvable signal paths. Also, through expressing the precoder as a sum of a communication-precoder and a sensing-precoder, we develop an analytical solution to the joint transceiver design problem by generalizing the idea of block-diagonalization (BD) to the ISAC system. Simulation results show that with a proper tradeoff parameter, the proposed methods can achieve a decent compromise between communication and sensing, where the performance of each communication/sensing task experiences only a mild performance loss as compared with the performance attained by optimizing exclusively for a single task.

28-Ghz Rof Link Employing Optical Remote Heterodyne Techniques With Kramers-Kronig Receiver

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a 28-GHz optical remote heterodyne RoF link using KK receiver for the first time. An optical SSB modulated signal is obtained utilizing an IQ modulator and two free-running lasers. Due to its minimum phase property, KK algorithm can be adopted to reconstruct the complex 16-QAM signal from the received intensity signal. This scheme is effective in eliminating the SSBI penalty introduced by square-law detection. Through the use of the KK receiver, the power penalty caused by the 80 km SSMF transmission is found to be less than 1 dB with digital CDC post processing. The KK-based receiver can also provide about 2 dB advantage over the traditional receiver at the 7% HD-FEC threshold in the case of 28 GBaud rate transmission over 80 km fiber. Furthermore, as the baud rate increases, the benefit of KK receiving scheme is more obvious and superior than that of the traditional receiving scheme.

Abstract:Direct detection (DD) systems based on high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is promising to provide high spectrum efficiency (SE) for future short-reach data-center applications with next generation standardization of 800GbE or even 1.6TbE considering bandwidth limitation. Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver is recently proposed as an effective method to inherently remove signal-signal beat interference (SSBI) by reconstructing complex optical field in single-sideband (SSB) DD systems. In this paper, we make a detailed system performance assessment of applying a KK receiver in 128, 256 and 512QAM systems through simulations and experimental demonstrations. 25GHz-spaced 4 140 Gbs wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) 128QAM and 4 160 Gbs WDM 256QAM SSB KK transmissions over 20km of standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) are successfully achieved. As far as we know, this is the first time that a constellation size as high as 256QAM with a net SE of 5.12 bsHz is experimentally demonstrated in a WDM system with KK receiver, and the effect of adjusting carrier-to-signal power ratio (CSPR) on the performance of 128, 256 and 512QAM systems is also investigated with simulation and experimental results.
