Abstract:We introduce and experimentally demonstrate a modified Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver with direct detection (DD) to realize an accurate optical field reconstruction at low carrier-to-signal power ratio (CSPR) condition. In our scheme, an exponential operation is applied to a single-sideband (SSB) signal, rather than a continuous-wave tone adding method in the conventional KK scheme. By this means, the minimum phase condition (MPC) is inherently satisfied, thus the optical field can be reconstructed accurately through KK relation at a low CSPR, leading to a high receiver sensitivity in a DD system. A proof-of-concept experiment is conducted, in which an SSB signal is generated based on an 8-GBaud 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) data stream and then is transmitted over an 80-km single mode fiber (SMF). By using the modified KK technique, 1.1- and 0.9-dB sensitivity improvements are achieved in the optical back-to-back and after the fiber transmission cases, respectively. The proposed and the conventional KK schemes show similar BER performances at the optimum CSPR value with a high received optical power. In addition, we perform numerical simulations to study the impacts of bandwidth limitation and chromatic dispersion on the proposed minimum phase signal.

Abstract:This letter presents a Ka-band compact eight-element four-beam phased-array receiver to improve communication capacity for millimeter-wave satellite communications. To address the design challenge of the large area induced by the multibeam forming, the receiver utilizes a digital-assisted variable-gain phase shifting technique and an active combining scheme to enable compact implementation and facilitate array design. The receiver achieves a 360° phase shifting range with a 6-bit resolution and a 25-dB attenuation range with a 0.5-dB step. The measured root mean square (rms) phase and amplitude errors are 1.1° and 0.11 dB at 29.5 GHz, respectively. Each element achieves a gain of 26.7 dB, a minimum noise figure (NF) of 3.7 dB, and an input-referred 1-dB gain compression point (IP1 dB) of −32.5 dBm. The proposed receiver demonstrates the state-of-the-art number of simultaneously reconfigurable beams with a compact size among millimeter-wave silicon-based beamformers.

Abstract:The implementation method of the receiver carrier recovery loop of microsatellite affects the volume,weight and function reconfigurability of the transponder.Based on analysis of the traditional carrier recovery loop,using I/Q sub-sampling technique,this work presented a receiver architecture based on all digital carrier recovery loop using coordinate rotation digital computer(CORDIC) algorithm.This method omits four computationally intensive multipliers of complex mixer and the large lookup table used by direct digital frequency synthesis.The solution is verified by the system simulation using Matlab and a hardware description language simulation using ModelSim.Furthermore,the very high speed integrated circuit hardware description language(VHDL) code of the carrier recovery loop was synthesized on a specific field programmable gate array(FPGA).The result showed that this circuit only needed 3.6% of the logic resource and achieved the maximum frequency of 226 MHz.The methodology can be applied to the design of other reconfigurable receivers.

Abstract:Amplitude phase shift keying (APSK) aided differential spatial modulation (APSK-DSM) is a multiple-input-multiple-output wireless transmission technique which not only has the desirable features of differential spatial modulation (DSM) but also has a higher spectrum efficiency than DSM. However, the error propagation problem and the violation of the quasi-static channel assumption in conventional APSK-DSM design will cause significant performance loss, especially in undesirable channel conditions. Besides, the maximum-likelihood detection based on the traditional block-by-block search has a complexity that grows exponentially with the block size, which becomes intractable in systems with large transmit antenna numbers. To overcome those drawbacks, we propose a novel transmission scheme named the absolute amplitude differential phase spatial modulation (AADP-SM) in this paper. AADP-SM is able to alleviate the error propagation problem and achieve a near-coherent performance by invoking multiple previous blocks in the current detection. By taking into account the channel fading rate, AADP-SM is also more robust in fast-fading channels than APSK-DSM. A novel non-coherent detection algorithm is proposed for AADP-SM to reduce the exponential detection complexity to a polynomial order. Finally, we show through simulation that AADP-SM is tolerable to imperfect information about the channel statistics.

Abstract:With the increasing demand of bandwidth, a higher capacity communication system is required for optical short link and access network. Intensity modulationdirect detection (IM-DD) is considered as a reasonable method in access network, due to its low cost and power consumption. However, it reduces the spectral efficiency compared with IQ modulation. In addition, single-sideband (SSB) signal occupies less bandwidth than double-sideband signal (DSB). However, SSB systems suffer from signal-signal beat interference (SSBI) from photodiodes (PDs). Recently, KramersKronig (KK) receiver is proposed to mitigate SSBI. Meanwhile, single-sideband (SSB) signal is the prerequisite for KK scheme, and this kind of signal is also tolerant to fiber chromatic dispersion and multipath-fading. On the other hand, free-space optical (FSO) communication is becoming a promising candidate for next generation optical access network. Thus we experimentally demonstrate the KK scheme in 20km SSMF and 20m FSO links with both single carrier signal and multicarrier signal. We compare the performance between them with and without pre-equalization (pre-EQ). With the help of probabilistically shaped (PS) mapping to gives an increase in the sensitivity over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). We reach a 117bits transmission with a spectral efficiency of 5.85bitsHz of 20Ghz bandwidth with single modulator and single photodiode (PD) in fiber-FSO system.

Abstract:We propose and investigate the use of a Kramers–Kronig (KK) receiver in a single sideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing radio over fiber (SSB-OFDM-RoF) link based on an optical remote heterodyne solution. This scheme is effective in eliminating the signal-to-signal beating interference introduced by square-law detection of a photo-detector in an SSB-OFDM-RoF link. We extensively study the influences of different carrier-to-signal power ratios (CSPRs), laser linewidths, and transmission distances on our proposed scheme. It is proved that the KK-based receiver can reduce optimal CSPR by more than 5 dB and provide about 1.1 dB gain over the conventional mixer-based receiver scheme with CSPR of 11 dB after 75 km fiber transmission.

Abstract:As PON systems move towards terabit/s aggregated data rates with longer transmission distance, optical coherent receivers become preferred due to their high tolerance to power fading from fiber transmission. To solve the high complexity and high cost problems of optical coherent receivers, a scheme for complex QAM signal transmission with simple direct detection is recommended in this paper. The scheme based on optical SSB modulation with frequency-shifted QAM signals and low-cost single-ended PD provides an efficient low-cost solution for long reach coherent PON. Due to its minimum phase property of the optical SSB modulated signal, Kramers-Kronig scheme can be used to reconstruct the complex QAM signal from the received intensity signal. The efficiency of the proposed scheme is validated by both numerical simulations and experiments for both QPSK and 16-QAM modulated signals. By using standard commercially available components, the experiments demonstrated that the combination of SSB modulation of frequency-shifted QAM signal and its single-ended PD receiver with KK scheme can support SSMF transmission over 75 km for both QPSK and 16-QAM signals with receiver optical power penalty less than 1.5 dB.

Abstract:A near-field based on a semi-passive intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) framework is proposed. Our objective is to identify the optimal beam direction from the base station to both the communicating user and the sensing target through downlink beam scanning signals. Especially, in the communication module, the beam scanning process in the downlink by IRS’s passive reflecting elements (REs) searches for the optimal reflected beam and sends the signal from the base station to the communicating user. Meanwhile, in the sensing module, the IRS can estimate the location of nearby targets by analyzing the echo signals received by the active sensing elements (SEs) on the IRS. To achieve the above objectives, in this paper, we design the near-field codebook by considering the near-field cascaded array steering vectors of the IRS and match the optimal codewords of the IRS through an exhaustive training process, so as to efficiently complete the near-field beam training under the matched near-field channel model. We have done a performance analysis of this ISAC system for the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB), and CRB provides performance constraints for near-field target sensing. Specifically, the CRB curve shows a monotonic decrease with increasing beam scan duration, while the achievable rate initially increases and then decreases. Therefore, we need to set the size of the model codebook space reasonably to balance the perception and communication performance. Simulation results show that the perceptual performance of our proposed scheme in the ISAC system is close to the derived CRB.
28-Ghz Rof Link Employing Optical Remote Heterodyne Techniques With Kramers-Kronig Receiver

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a 28-GHz optical remote heterodyne RoF link using KK receiver for the first time. An optical SSB modulated signal is obtained utilizing an IQ modulator and two free-running lasers. Due to its minimum phase property, KK algorithm can be adopted to reconstruct the complex 16-QAM signal from the received intensity signal. This scheme is effective in eliminating the SSBI penalty introduced by square-law detection. Through the use of the KK receiver, the power penalty caused by the 80 km SSMF transmission is found to be less than 1 dB with digital CDC post processing. The KK-based receiver can also provide about 2 dB advantage over the traditional receiver at the 7% HD-FEC threshold in the case of 28 GBaud rate transmission over 80 km fiber. Furthermore, as the baud rate increases, the benefit of KK receiving scheme is more obvious and superior than that of the traditional receiving scheme.

Abstract:Direct detection (DD) systems based on high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is promising to provide high spectrum efficiency (SE) for future short-reach data-center applications with next generation standardization of 800GbE or even 1.6TbE considering bandwidth limitation. Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver is recently proposed as an effective method to inherently remove signal-signal beat interference (SSBI) by reconstructing complex optical field in single-sideband (SSB) DD systems. In this paper, we make a detailed system performance assessment of applying a KK receiver in 128, 256 and 512QAM systems through simulations and experimental demonstrations. 25GHz-spaced 4 140 Gbs wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) 128QAM and 4 160 Gbs WDM 256QAM SSB KK transmissions over 20km of standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) are successfully achieved. As far as we know, this is the first time that a constellation size as high as 256QAM with a net SE of 5.12 bsHz is experimentally demonstrated in a WDM system with KK receiver, and the effect of adjusting carrier-to-signal power ratio (CSPR) on the performance of 128, 256 and 512QAM systems is also investigated with simulation and experimental results.

Abstract:The necessity for high carrier-to-signal power ratio (CSPR) in the single-sideband direct-detection transmission system results in a low receiver sensitivity. To address this problem, we propose a coherent reception scheme based on an electro-absorption modulated laser (EML) to amplify the optical carrier at the receiver in virtue of optical injection locking (OIL) technique, thereby mitigating the impact of the signal-signal beat interference. Specifically, the local oscillator yielded by an injection-locked distributed feedback (DFB) laser is coupled with the optical signal, and coherently detected by an electro-absorption modulator (EAM). We experimentally investigate the feasibility and performance of the 8-Gbaud Nyquist-shaped quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal transmission system employing an EML-based coherent receiver without the Kramers-Kronig (KK) algorithm. As a result, 9- and 7-dB sensitivity improvements are achieved in comparison with the standard KK receiver while the CSPR is reduced by 10 dB in the optical back-to-back and after 80-km fiber transmission cases, respectively. The experimental results indicate that the proposed approach owns the potential to improve receiver sensitivity for power and cost-efficient data center interconnection.

Abstract:Nonlinear distortion for single-sideband (SSB) signals will significantly reduce the performance of Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver-based optical transmission. In this work, we present a proof-of-concept study of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS)-induced nonlinear distortion for 10 Gbaud and 28 Gbaud SSB QAM16 transmission over 80 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) based on a KK receiver. Significantly reduced bit error rate (BER) has been experimentally observed due to the SBS and the threshold of SBS at about 7 dBm is detected for such an 80 km SSMF link. With left sideband (LSB) modulation of SSB, together with optical filtering, reduced SBS nonlinear distortion has been achieved with ~2 dB power tolerance improvement. The results reveal an important issue of SBS-induced nonlinear distortion, which would be of great significance for KK receiver-based optical transmission applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigated the effects of error-feedback noise shaping (EFNS) on a low-resolution Kramers-Kronig (KK) detection system for the first time. Both 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) and 64-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (64-QAM) were considered in the experiment. The carrier tone was added on the transmitter side using the virtual carrier-assisted single sideband (VCA-SSB) method to meet the minimum phase (MP) condition. Under the MP condition, KK detection only needs the intensity of the optical signal to be detected by one photodiode (PD) to retrieve the phase information. However, the virtual carrier tone increases the carrier-to-signal power ratio (CSPR), which results in a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) at the transmitter, causing an increase in quantization noise. To mitigate quantization noise in the low-resolution KK detection system, EFNS was applied. The application of EFNS increased the optimal CSPR of the KK detection system and improved receiver sensitivity. Using a 4-bit DAC and the EFNS, 80 km transmission was achieved in the 60-Gbit/s 64-QAM KK detection system.
