Abstract:A high sensitivity temperature sensor based on a singlemode-no-core-singlemode (SNCS) fibre structure and surrounded with alcohol within a silica capillary is described. In this investigation, no-core fibre (NCF) is used as the multimode waveguide and alcohol is chosen as the temperature sensitive medium. By packaging the alcohol solution with a short length of NCF enclosed within a silica capillary, the surrounding temperature can be detected by monitoring the variations of transmission loss at a specific wavelength. The theoretical analysis predicts this temperature sensor can provide high sensitivity, and the experimental results support this. The maximum temperature sensitivity of the sample is 0.49 dB/degrees C with a potential temperature resolution of 0.02 degrees C at the operating wavelength of 1545.9 nm. In addition, the repeatability and response time of the sensor of this investigation are investigated experimentally. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A dual-channel glucose sensor, based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR), is proposed and experimentally confirmed. The proposed sensor is composed of a single-mode fiber (SMF) sandwiched by two multimode fibers (MMFs). The gold is coated on the cylindrical cladding surface of the optical fiber as a sensing channel to measure the glucose concentration. The other channel is composed of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and gold film to sense the ambient temperature. It has been experimentally verified that the glucose sensor's concentration sensitivity and temperature sensitivity can reach 2.99 nm/% and −3.580 nm/°C, respectively. The proposed sensor, possessing advantages such as compact structure, excellent sensing performance and the ease of fabrication, has potential applications in biology, chemistry, medicine, etc.

Abstract:Spurred by the continuous development of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technology, optical fiber sensors based on SPR have become a research hotspot. Although single-mode fibers (SMFs) are simple and easy to manufacture, the sensitivity is quite poor. On the other hand, even though photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and anti-resonant fibers (ARFs) can achieve high-sensitivity detection and the wavelength sensitivity is tens of times that of SMFs, they are complex and difficult to produce. Herein, an SPR refractive index sensor composed of micro-nano optical fibers (MNFs) is designed to detect analytes in the refractive index range between 1.33 and 1.43. Analysis by the finite element method (FEM) reveals that the maximum wavelength sensitivity is 49,000 nm/RIU. The SPR sensor boasting a simple structure, low cost, and high wavelength sensitivity has enormous potential in applications such as chemical analysis, environmental monitoring, and other fields.

Abstract:The development of portable biosensors exhibiting outstanding performance for fast and convenient detection of human glucose levels takes on critical significance to human health testing. A two-dimensional metal-organic framework (Cu-TCPP 2D MOF)-sensitized arrayed resonant cavity silver film (ARC/Ag) optical fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor was developed in this study. The ARC/Ag 3D structure overcame weak coupling and non-uniform plasmon resonance, and the resulting strong hotspots effectively extended the sensing region. Moreover, the coated MOF is considered as a prominent SPR sensitized layer for its plasmonic property and highly ordered structure. The results of the simulations confirmed the local electric field enhancement that was attributed to the plasmonic synergistic effect of MOF with ARC/Ag. The normalized transmission spectra were collected in ethanol solutions with the refractive index (RI) of 1.340 to 1.352, and the sensitivity and the figure of merit (FOM) of the sensor were demonstrated to be increased by 73.98% and 68%, respectively. The sensor exhibited a linear response factor of 9.99 nm/(mg/mL) over a glucose concentration range of 0.1–1.2 mg/mL by covalently immobilizing glucose oxidase (GOD) on MOF. Accordingly, the proposed highly integrated and portable biosensor provides a piece of promising evidence for label-free glucose detection at point of care (POC).

Abstract:Since fiber-optic sensors using noble metal-excited surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effects have encountered bottlenecks in improving performance, we propose a fiber-optic sensor using sodium in combination with a no-core fiber (NCF) to measure both refractive index (RI) and temperature. We deposited sodium thin films on the surface of NCF optical fibers and protected them with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for RI sensing or temperature sensing. We performed computational simulations and performance analyses of the sensors using the finite element method, and the results show that the sodium-based SPR sensors have higher sensitivity, wider detection range, and narrower full width at half-maximum (FWHM) than the noble metal SPR sensors. SPR sensors with different sodium film thicknesses have different sensing characteristics, so we can get optical fiber sensors with more flexible transmission characteristics, which helps us arrange sensors more conveniently in practical applications. The simulation and numerical results show that when the sensor is used to measure RI, the average sensitivity of the sensor can reach 7977 nm/RIU, the maximum sensitivity can reach 23100 nm/RIU, the narrowest FWHM is 14.23 nm, and the maximum figure of merit (FOM) is 719.42 RIU-1 under different thicknesses of sodium film. The corresponding RI ranges from 1.32 to 1.41. When the temperature measurement range is 0°C~100°C, the average sensitivity can reach 7.86 nm/°C, the maximum temperature sensitivity can reach 21.1 nm/°C, and the narrowest FWHM is 17.84 nm. In summary, the proposed sodium-based SPR sensor has flexible and high-performance sensing characteristics, and our research work provides more powerful theoretical support for the application of sodium-based plasma devices.

Abstract:External temperature variations inevitably affect the accuracy of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors. To that end, we propose an ultra-compact label-free dual-channel SPR fiber sensor (DSPRFS) that can simultaneously measure the glucose concentration and ambient temperature in real-time. The proposed sensor is based on a unique dual-channel structure fabricated by etching a side-hole fiber (SHF), and has significantly higher spatial sensitivity than traditional SPR biosensors. After coating with silver and zinc oxide films, one channel was filled with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to sense the ambient temperature, and the other channel was immobilized with glucose oxidase (GOx) enzyme for glucose sensing. The proposed sensor is analyzed theoretically, fabricated and characterized. Glucose concentration sensitivity and temperature sensitivity of the manufactured sensor sample were found to be as high as 6.156 nm/mMand -1.604 nm/°C with limits of detection (LOD) of 16.24 µM and 0.06 °C, respectively. The proposed sensor has an extremely compact structure, enables temperature compensation, and is suitable for in-situ monitoring and high-precision sensing of glucose and other biological analytes.

Abstract:This sensor utilizes conventional single-mode fiber (SMF) to create a refractive index (RI) surface plasmon resonance (SPR) system. To enhance its capabilities, multiple SMFs are employed in parallel, enabling the synchronous and collective activation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) to achieve rapid responses for the detection of biochemical analytes in the infrared spectrum, ranging from 1200 to 6900 nm. The sensor's characteristics are meticulously analyzed using the all-vector finite element method (FEM). The sensing medium comprises gold, chosen for its exceptional corrosion resistance and stability. Gold facilitates the efficient release of free electrons, promoting the coupling effect between the first-order x -odd mode and SPP mode, which is particularly prominent in this setup. The investigated sensor showcases remarkable performance metrics, which boasts an impressive maximum wavelength sensitivity of 70,000 nm/RIU, accompanied by an average sensitivity of 14,204.55 nm/RIU and an exceptional resolution reaching 1.43 × 10 −6 RIU. Notably, this splendid performance is consistent across a wide RI range, spanning from 1.00 to 1.44. Additionally, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and figure of merit (FOM) are exceptional, while the walk-off length of 205 m far exceeds the transmission distance of microstructure optical fibers (MOFs). In comparison to similar MOFs, this SMF-based sensor offers distinct advantages. Its simple structure, cost-effectiveness, and exceptional performance address manufacturing challenges and overcome existing technical limitations. This breakthrough technology holds the potential to revolutionize various fields, including environmental monitoring, biomedicine, and chemical analysis.

Abstract:The present work represents the fabrication of a CF-MZI fiber sensor to develop an optical sensor leveraging surface plasmon resonance (SPR), in order to measure the component concentrations in the surrounding environment. In this sensor structure, a coreless optical fiber (NCF) covered with a layer of gold nanoparticles was used, which significantly improved the sensing performance. The interferometer structure can be formed by joining two segments of the standard multi-mode optical fiber (MMF) to the two ends of 2-cm coreless fiber via fusion splicing. The obtained results showed high sensitivity in the experimental tests. The sensitivity to the concentration changes was measured at − 68 nm/C% for single-layer sensing and 55.35 nm/C% for dual-layer sensing. The customized design enables real-time monitoring and improves the detection of environmental variables, and it is characterized by its simplicity and compact structure. The proposed sensor is versatile and suitable for various sensing applications beyond environmental analysis.

Abstract:A highly sensitive SPR-PCF based biochemical sensor has been proposed based on finite element method simulations. Two metal wires are assumed to fill into two air holes in the y direction and the liquid analyze with refractive index higher than background material is injected into the central air hole. The liquid analyze supports liquid-core mode which couples to SPP mode as the phase matching condition is satisfied. High sensitivity of fiber sensor is achieved by the direct interaction between transmitted light and liquid analyze. The fiber sensor possesses the sensitivities of - 8383.9 nm/RIU, - 8428.6 nm/RIU and -8776.8 nm/RIU by filling gold, silver and aluminium respectively into the air holes of the PCF as the refractive index of liquid analyze varies from 1.454 to 1.478. The influences of the structural parameters of the PCF on the resonance wavelength and confinement loss are also analyzed.

Abstract:We proposed a new saccharides sensor developed by symmetrical optical waveguide (SOW)-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR). This unique MgF2/Au/MgF2/Analyte film structure results in longer surface plasmon wave (SPW) propagation lengths and depths, leading to an increment of resolution. In this paper, we managed to decorate the dielectric interface (MgF2 layer) by depositing a thin polydopamine film as surface-adherent that provides a platform for secondary reactions with the probe molecule. 3-Aminophenylboronic acid (3-PBA) is chosen to be the saccharides sense probe molecule in the present work. The aqueous humor of Diabetes and Cataract patient whose blood glucose level is normal are analyzed and the results demonstrated that this sensor shows great potential in monitoring the blood sugar and can be adapted in the field of biological monitoring in the future.

Abstract:Fiber optic SPR (Surface Plasmon Resonance) sensor based on MMF-FBG-MMF (Multi-mode Fiber–Fiber Bragg Grating–Multi-mode Fiber) structure has been proposed and applied to dual-parameter measurement– liquid refractive index and temperature. The fabrication method of this proposed sensor is simpler than other kinds of fiber optic SPR sensors. The basic sensing principle of fiber optic SPR sensors has been provided and the dual-parameter measurement system has been set up. The changes of NaCl resolution refractive index and temperature have been detected and analyzed. The refractive index sensitivity of the proposed sensor has reached 2556.8nm/RIU, and the temperature sensitivity has been improved to 172pm/°C.

Abstract:A reflective seawater salinity and temperature sensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect with multimode single-mode (MS) fiber structure has been proposed and demonstrated. Firstly, the sensing mechanism of the optical fiber SPR sensor was analyzed. Next, the influence of the type of metal, the thickness of the metal film, and the length of sensing area upon the SPR spectrum were simulated and compared. Based on these measurements, a reflective and highly-sensitive refractive index sensor was fabricated and experimentally demonstrated. Finally, a dual-parameter SPR sensor for the simultaneous measurement of seawater salinity and temperature was proposed by coating polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) on half of the sensor as a temperature sensitive material, whose sensitivities were demonstrated to be 0.31 nm/‰ and -2.02 nm/°C, respectively. The proposed sensor not only resolves the cross-sensitivity problem between salinity and temperature, but also provides a simple structure with low cost and high sensitivity.

Abstract:A fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor based on a silver-coated hollow fiber (HF) structure for glucose detection is presented. The sensor surface was immobilized with 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (PMBA) acting as a glucose recognition monolayer. Then, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) modified with 2-aminoethanethiol (2-AET) and PMBA were introduced onto the sensor surface after glucose was captured to enhance the wavelength shift of the SPR phenomenon excited by the light transmitted in the wall of the HF sensor. Instead of the conventional one-step sensitization pretreatment commonly used in the deposition process of silver films for fiber-optic SPR sensors, a sensitization-activation two-step activation method was adopted in the fabrication of the proposed sensor. Experiments for glucose detection were performed on the fabricated sensors in the concentration range of 1 nM-1 mM. Results showed that the sensor fabricated by the two-step activation method has a much larger shift of resonance wavelength than the sensor fabricated using the one-step sensitization method. The resonance wavelength shift was found to be linear to the logarithm of the concentration in the range of 1 nM-1 mM. The sensor achieved a limit of detection (LOD) of as low as 1 nM, which is at least an order of magnitude lower than that of other fiber-optic sensors for glucose detection reported previously. The presented HF glucose sensor has the potential for biosensing applications and provides a large reference value in the study of optical fiber SPR sensors for biosensing.
Temperature and salinity sensing characteristics of embedded core optical fiber based on surface plasmon resonance

Abstract:An embedded core fiber sensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) principle is developed. In the structure of optical fiber, the middle of the optical fiber cladding is hollowed out. The hollowed-out part is then filled with a temperature-sensitive layer. For the temperature sensitive layer, polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) is chosen. A metal layer is placed outside the cladding of the optical fiber to detect changes in the external environment and stimulate the SPR effect.The gold metal(Au) layer is also placed between the cladding and the PDMS to stimulate the SPR effect.The refractive index of seawater varies with salinity and temperature through COMSOL Multiphysics finite element simulation. We can measure the two parameters of salinity and temperature at the same time based on the SPR principle. The sensitivity of salinity and temperature calculated by this sensor is 0.193 nm/%, 0.397 nm/°C. Fiber optic sensors use the SPR principle to detect dynamic, real-time, continuous processes. The measurement range is very wide, and the brightness is also very high.Compared with single-channel measurement of single parameter, this sensor can greatly improve the efficiency of two-parameter measurement. The sensor has the advantages of simple structure, low production cost and high sensitivity, which can realize the simultaneous measurement of two parameters and avoid the crosstalk between parameters. It has great research significance.
Ultra-high sensitivity SPR temperature sensor based on a helical-core fiber

Abstract:A novel compact ultra-high sensitivity optical fiber temperature sensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is proposed and demonstrated. The sensor is fabricated by employing a helical-core fiber (HCF), which is polished as a D-type fiber on the helical-core region and coated with a layer of Au-film and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The theoretical and experimental results show that the resonant wavelength and sensitivity of the proposed sensor can be effectively adjusted by changing the twisting pitch of HCF. Due to the high refractive index sensitivity of the sensor and the high thermo-optic coefficient of PDMS, the maximum sensitivity can reach -19.56 nm/°C at room temperature when the twist pitch of HCF is 2.1 mm. It is worth noting that the sensitivity can be further improved by using a shorter pitch of HCF. The proposed SPR temperature sensor has adjustable sensitivity, is easy to realize distributed sensing, and has potential application prospects in biomedical, healthcare, and other fields.
Cascaded dual-channel broadband SPR fiber optic sensor based on Ag and Ag/ZnO/PDMS film structure

Abstract:In order to broaden the sensing bandwidth of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors, we propose and demonstrate a dual-channel SPR fiber optic sensor with wide bandwidth. The sensor is fabricated using no-core fiber (NCF), in which the film consists of a silver film and a ZnO film. The sensing characteristics are investigated by simulation and experiment. The resonance wavelength range of the SPR sensor can be significantly tuned by varying the thickness of the ZnO film. In the experiments, a dual-channel SPR sensor that can be used for simultaneous detection of temperature and refractive index was realized by cascading ZnO/Ag film with Ag film. The experimental results show that the two sensing channels are independent without crosstalk. The sensitivity of this sensor is 3512 nm/RIU in the range of 1.333 ∼ 1.385 and 4.6 nm/°C in the range of 0 ∼ 60 °C, which is better than most of the current dual-channel SPR sensors. In addition, the experimental results show that this sensor has good stability in use. The sensor proposed in this work has the advantages of a wide operating wavelength range, simple and compact structure, and high sensitivity. It has a broad application prospect in the simultaneous measurement of refractive index and temperature of liquids.

Abstract:A novel dual-channel optical fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor, which achieves high-sensitivity simultaneous measurement of seawater salinity and temperature, was designed and verified. The hetero-core structure based on no-core fiber (NCF) with 40 nm thick Au film and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) overlaying was utilized to excite the SPR effect and serve as the temperature sensing channel. In order to effectively separate from the temperature SPR dip, a silver/gold bimetallic film was deposited on the surface of the biconical fiber with a grinding angle of 14° to construct the salinity channel cascaded with the temperature channel, where the metal thickness was determined as Ag/Au: 30 nm/10 nm. The simulation and experimental results showed that the bimetallic film used in this article can significantly improve the figure of merit (FOM) of the sensor compared with the optical fiber SPR sensor deposited with a single kind of metal film. In addition, further experimental results on salinity and temperature indicated that the proposed sensor had a salinity sensitivity of 0.73 nm/‰ and a temperature sensitivity of −2.43 nm/℃, and demonstrated the advantages of ease of manufacturing, acceptable repeatability, and good stability. Therefore, the proposed dual-channel optical fiber SPR sensor has high research value and application prospects in the field of ocean measurement.

Abstract:A portable and user-friendly optical fiber sensing platform for rapid glucose detection based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing and enzymatic reaction is proposed. We designed a simple and easy-to-use miniaturized device for the specific decomposition of glucose; the device can fully react with glucose samples and produce glucose-free samples. The optical fiber SPR biosensor was prepared for detecting glucose samples before and after enzymatic reaction through the device, and to obtain an SPR differential signal that corresponds specifically to glucose concentration. Different levels of urine glucose concentrations in a broad range of 0-400 mg/dL were distinguished by the proposed method with a sensitivity of 3.10 pm/(mg/dL). Our novel method has the following advantages: (1) the sensor and enzymatic reaction device can be reused with low cost; (2) the interference of the background solution can be eliminated for more specific glucose detection; (3) the operation is simple and fast without requiring professional operation skills, and the test samples can be directly loaded/ released for detecting; (4) the platform is also suitable for the specific detection of other enzymatic reactions by changing the reaction enzyme. The platform provides a new pathway for the detection of food additives and medical immunoassays.
