Abstract:The terahertz band (0.1 THz-10 THz) with massive spectrum resources is recognized as a promising candidate for future rate-greedy applications, such as 6G communications. Optoelectronic terahertz communications are beneficial for realizing 100 Gb/s data rate and beyond, which have greatly promoted the progress of the 6G research. In this article, we give technical insight into the key technologies of optoelectronic terahertz communications with high data rates in the physical layer, including approaches of broadband devices, baseband signal processing technologies, and design of advanced transmission system architectures. A multicarrier signal processing routine with high noise tolerance is proposed and experimentally verified in a 500 Gb/s net rate terahertz communication system. Finally, we discuss the future directions of optoelectronic terahertz technologies toward the target of terabit- scale communications.

Abstract:We present experimental results on using optical transmission technologies such as I&Q modulators, digital coherent receivers, heterodyne up-conversion in fast photodiodes, to generate, transmit and detect high capacity wireless transmission. Both OFDM and QAM modulation formats are tested in the W-achieving capacities up to 100-Gbps with seamless optical fiber-wireless conversion.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a 400 GHz carrier wireless transmission system with real-time capable detection and demonstrate transmission of a 60 Gbit/s signal derived from optical Nyquist channels in a 12.5 GHz ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing (UD-WDM) grid and carrying QPSK modulation. This is the highest data rate demonstrated for carrier frequencies above 300 GHz and also validates the feasibility of bridging between next generation 100 GbE wired data streams and indoor wireless applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss building blocks that enable the exploitation of optical capacities beyond 100 Gb/s. Optical networks will benefit from more flexibility and agility in their network elements, especially from coherent transceivers. To achieve capacities of 400 Gb/s and more, coherent transceivers will operate at higher symbol rates. This will be made possible with higher bandwidth components using new electro-optic technologies implemented with indium phosphide and silicon photonics. Digital signal processing will benefit from new algorithms. Multi-dimensional modulation, of which some formats are already in existence in current flexible coherent transceivers, will provide improved tolerance to noise and fiber nonlinearities. Constellation shaping will further improve these tolerances while allowing a finer granularity in the selection of capacity. Frequency-division multiplexing will also provide improved tolerance to the nonlinear characteristics of fibers. Algorithms with reduced computation complexity will allow the implementation, at speeds, of direct pre-compensation of nonlinear propagation effects. Advancement in forward error correction will shrink the performance gap with Shannon's limit. At the network control and management level, new tools are being developed to achieve a more efficient utilization of networks. This will also allow for network virtualization, orchestration, and management. Finally, FlexEthernet and FlexOTN will be put in place to allow network operators to optimize capacity in their optical transport networks without manual changes to the client hardware.

To enable this revolutionary packet-optical engine, integrated photonics seems to be the only possible solution. We introduce the latest industry trend of pluggable optical module form factors, and review the latest progress and challenges of pluggable optics products. Furthermore, we discuss our recent demonstration on a compact solution to timing skew of coherent transmitter in the pluggable optical module.

Abstract:In this article, we review the latest progress on data center interconnect (DCI). We then discuss different perspectives on the 400G pluggable module, including form factor, architecture, digital signal processing (DSP), and module power consumption, following 400G pluggable optics in DCI applications. Next, we experimentally investigate the capacity-reach matrix for high-baud-rate and high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) single-carrier signals in the unamplified single-mode optical fiber (SMF) link. We show that the 64 GBd 16-QAM, and 64-QAM signals can potentially enable 400 Gb/s and 600 Gb/s DCI application for 40 km and beyond of unamplified fiber link.

Abstract:With the standardizations of 400GE and 400G completed or near completion, the attention is now refocused to next generation techniques with larger bit rates, i.e., 800G. We can see that current research commonly aims to short-reach or metro transmission for sharing key components with 400G, while ultra-long-haul transmission (typically ≥ 1500 km) based on 800G is still in unknown state. Moreover, all-optical networking with OXC and ROADM is being gradually deployed all around the world, which further increases transmission performance requirement. According to past progress, it is urgent for us to analyze and clarify the requirements of 800G transmission systems for ultra-long-haul all-optical backbone networks. This work provides the technological prospection and requirements of 800G transmission systems for ultra-long-haul all-optical backbone networks. Firstly, the field network status and basic technical requirements for 800G are analyzed. Our record real-time 10-λ × 800-Gb/s sub-carrier-multiplexing 95-GBd DP PCS-64QAM transmission over 2018-km G.654.E Fiber with pure backward distributed Raman amplification shows that reusing the components of current 400G technique is not the future direction. By numerically simulating the transmission performances of non-fully-loaded and fully-loaded DWDM scenarios, symbol rate higher than 180GBd, G.654.E, and optical bandwidth ≥12 THz are necessary.

Abstract:In this article, we first review the current status of 400GBASE client-side optics standards and multi-source agreements (MSAs). We then compare different form factors for 400GE modules, including CFP8, OSFP and QSFP-DD. The essential techniques to implement 400GE, such as pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), forward error correction (FEC) and a continuous time-domain linear equalizer (CTLE), are discussed. A 400GE physical interface card (PIC) in Juniper’s PTX5000 platform has been developed, conforming to the latest IEEE802.3bs standard. To validate the PIC’s performance, a commercial optical network tester (ONT) and the PIC are optically interconnected through two CFP8-LR8 modules. The CFP8-LR8 module utilizes eight optical wavelengths through coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM). Each wavelength carries 50 Gb/s PAM4 signal. The signal transmits through 10 km of single mode fiber (SMF). The ONT generates framed 400GE signal and sends it to the PIC through the first CFP8 module. The PIC recovers the signal, performs an internal loopback, and sends 400GE signal back to the ONT through the second CFP8 module. The optical spectrum, eye diagram, receiver sensitivity, long time soaking results, and internal digital diagnosis monitoring (DDM) result are fully characterized. The pre-FEC bit error rate (BER) is well below the KP4 FEC threshold of 2.2 × 10−4. After KP4 FEC, error-free performance over 30 km of SMF is achieved. In this way, we demonstrate both the interoperation between the PIC and the ONT, as well as the interoperation between the two CFP8 modules. This demonstration represents the successful implementation of the 400GE interface in the core IP/MPLS router.

The first field transmission of 8 × 216.8-Gb/s Nyquist-WDM signals is reported over 1750-km distance with 21.6-dB average loss per span. Each channel modulated by a 54.2-Gbaud PDM-CSRZ-QPSK signal is on 50-GHz grid, achieving a net spectral efficiency (SE) of 4 bit/s/Hz. We also demonstrate mixed data-rate transmission coexisting with 1 T, 400 G, and 100 G channels. The 400 G uses four independent subcarriers modulated by 28-Gbaud PDM-QPSK signals, yielding the net SE of 4 bit/s/Hz while 13 optically generated subcarriers from single optical source are employed in 1 T channel with 25-Gbaud PDM-QPSK modulation. The 100 G signal uses real-time coherent PDM-QPSK transponder with 15% overhead of soft-decision forward-error correction. The digital postfilter and 1-bit maximum likelihood sequence estimation are introduced at the receiver DSP to suppress noise, linear crosstalk, and filtering effects. Our results show the future 400 G and 1 T channels utilizing the Nyquist wavelength division multiplexing technique can transmit long-haul distance with higher SE using the same QPSK format.

Abstract:Client-side optics are facing an ever-increasing upgrading pace, driven by upcoming 5G related services and datacenter applications. The demand for a single lane data rate is soon approaching 200 Gbps. To meet such high-speed requirement, all segments of traditional intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) technologies are being challenged. The characteristics of electrical and optoelectronic components and the performance of modulation, coding, and digital signal processing (DSP) techniques are being stretched to their limits. In this context, we witnessed technological breakthroughs in several aspects, including development of broadband devices, novel modulation formats and coding, and high-performance DSP algorithms for the past few years. A great momentum has been accumulated to overcome the aforementioned challenges. In this article, we focus on IM/DD transmissions, and provide an overview of recent research and development efforts on key enabling technologies for 200 Gbps per lane and beyond. Our recent demonstrations of 200 Gbps short-reach transmissions with 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and discrete multitone signals are also presented as examples to show the system requirements in terms of device characteristics and DSP performance. Apart from digital coherent technologies and advanced direct detection systems, such as Stokes-vector and Kramers-Kronig schemes, we expect high-speed IM/DD systems will remain advantageous in terms of system cost, power consumption, and footprint for short reach applications in the short- to mid- term perspective.

Abstract:We summarize several different approaches for the realization of large capacity (>100Gb/s) fiber wireless integration system, including optical polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) combined with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) reception, advanced multi-level modulation, optical multi-carrier modulation, electrical multi-carrier modulation, antenna polarization multiplexing and multi-band multiplexing. These approaches can effectively reduce the signal baud rate as well as the required bandwidth for optical and electrical devices. We also investigate the problems, such as wireless multi-path effect due to different wireless transmission distance, existing in the large capacity fiber wireless integration system. We demonstrate these problems can be effectively solved based on advanced digital-signal-processing (DSP) algorithms including classic constant modulus algorithm (CMA). Moreover, based on the combination of these approaches as well as advanced DSP algorithms, we have successfully demonstrated a 400G fiber wireless integration system, which creates a capacity record of wireless delivery and ushers in a new era of ultra-high bit rate (>400Gb/s) optical wireless integration communications at mm-wave frequencies.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a record 400G optical wireless integration system simultaneously delivering 2 × 112 Gb/s two-channel polarization-division-multiplexing 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (PDM-16QAM) signal at 37.5 GHz wireless carrier and 2 × 108 Gb/s two-channel PDM quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) signal at 100 GHz wireless carrier, adopting two millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequency bands, two orthogonal antenna polarizations, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), photonic mm-wave generation and advanced digital signal processing (DSP). In the case of no fiber transmission, the bit error ratios (BERs) for both the 112 Gb/s PDM-16QAM signal after 1.5 m wireless delivery at 37.5 GHz and the 108 Gb/s PDM-QPSK signal after 0.7 m wireless delivery at 100 GHz are below the pre-forward-error-correction (pre-FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10(-3). To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a 400G optical wireless integration system in mm-wave frequency bands and also a capacity record of wireless delivery.

Abstract:Vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) based short reach optical solutions are widely deployed in the applications with the aggregated data rate from 10 Gb/s to 400 Gb/s and transmission distance less than 100m. Even with the great advantages of power consumption and cost, 100 Gb/s per lane multimode interconnect is still at stake due to the great challenges imposed by VCSEL design and multimode transmission. Besides the bandwidth challenge, co-design of VCSEL and electrical driver in both circuit and packaging level become significantly important with electrical and photonic chips getting close in a co-package form factor. In this paper, we will establish the theory on the VCSEL modeling and propose a comprehensive electro-optical co-design framework for power-efficient high-speed VCSEL transmitter targeting at 50 Gbaud. Bandwidth enhancement based on photon-photon resonance is also investigated with VCSELs injection locked by an optical frequency comb.
