Abstract:Based on a deductive, culturally decentered approach, new items were generated to improve the reliability of the original Social Axioms Survey, which measures individuals' general beliefs about the world. In Study 1, results from 11 countries support the original five-factor structure and achieve higher reliability for the axiom dimensions as measured by the new scale. Moreover, moderate but meaningful associations between axiom and Big-Five personality dimensions were found. Temporal change of social axioms at the culture level was examined and found to be moderate. In Study 2, additional new items were generated for social complexity and fate control, then assessed in Hong Kong and the United States. Reliability was further improved for both dimensions. Additionally, two subfactors of fate control were identified: fate determinism and fate alterability. Fate determinism, but not fate alterability, related positively to neuroticism. Other relationships between axiom and personality dimensions were similar to those reported in Study 1. The short forms of the axiom dimensions were generally reliable and correlated highly with the long forms. This research thus provides a stronger foundation for applying the construct of social axioms around the world.

Abstract:Background: The dimensionality of the sense of coherence (SOC-L9) scale has been in contention due to the varied factor structure revealed in the literature. In this study, we assessed the dimensionality of the SOC-L9 scale using Ghanaian university students while guarding against the method effect. The study also examined the gender measurement invariance of the scale. Methods: This research conveniently sampled 1062 students who responded to the SOC-L9 scale with negative items reversed to positive items. A larger proportion of the participants were male students (n = 769, 72.4 %), with 293(27.6 %) being female students. The youngest participant was 18 years old, whereas the oldest was 42 years old. Following all validation studies protocols, four distinct confirmatory factor analysis models were fitted and compared (i.e., unidimensional, three-factor first-order, three-factor second-order and bifactor models). Results: The initial model comparison revealed that the bifactor CFA model [CFI = 0.958, SRMR = 0.036, AIC = 21231.35, BIC = 21370.45] was superior to the unidimensional [CFI = 0.914, SRMR = 0.046, AIC = 26280.67, BIC = 26414.8] and 3-factor models [CFI = 0.932, SRMR = 0.040, AIC = 26221.67, BIC = 26370.71]. Upon further probing, it was discovered that SOC-L9 functions best as a unidimensional scale for the university student population. Gender measurement invariance was established for configural invariance [CFI = 0.986, SRMR = 0.044], metric invariance [CFI = 0.894, SRMR = 0.051] and scalar invariance [CFI = 0.983, SRMR = 0.047]. Conclusion: The SOC-L9 scale has a nested structure with the various sub-scales interacting to produce a summary total observed score. The structure of the SOC-L9 requires scholars to treat the scale as a unidimensional scale rather than a multidimensional one. This latent structure was found to be consistent with male and female university students.
A Preliminary Study on Self-constructionals Scales (scs)of Chinese-Version

Abstract:Objective: To explore psychometric properties of a Chinese version of Self-constructionals Scales (SCS). Methods: The scores of the SCS from randomly selected 468 high-school students were analysed. Results: Correlation coefficients of all items-subscales were between 0.41 and 0.83. The internal consistency of the interdependent subscale and independent subscale were respectively 0.76 and 0.81. And the internal consistency of the SCS was 0.88. Factor analysis showed that the cumulative contribution of the two factors was 63.18%. Conclusion: To some extent the Chinese version of Self-constructional Scales (SCS) has good reliability and validity, and it is worthy of spread.

Abstract:Background: Mental health and salutogenesis are important topics at universities in China and Germany where heightening stress levels in students can be observed. Aim: The aim of this article is to determine the profile of the salutogenic concept, sense of coherence (SOC), in Chinese and German students to provide new insights into SOC and mental health in Chinese and German students in higher education institutions (HEIs). Setting: The study was carried out at universities in China and Germany. Method: A non-experimental, cross-sectional, survey-based research design and convenience sampling was utilised to obtain the sample (n = 356). The sample was derived at a selected Chinese (n = 255) and a selected German university (n = 101). Data were gathered using the 7-point Likert SOC dimension scales based on the Life-Orientation Questionnaire (LOQ) research instrument. The internal consistency levels of the SOC sub-scales were of acceptable levels. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. Cronbach's alpha coefficients were calculated to determine the reliability of the LOQ research instrument. General linear modelling techniques. Results: The results showed the Chinese students scored significantly lower in all three SOC scales than the German students, with the largest practical significant difference in the sub-score of meaningfulness. In general, female Chinese and German students scored higher than their male counterparts. No significant differences could be found between German female and male, and Chinese female and male students. Conclusion: Conclusions and recommendations for future research and HEI practice are provided.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this study was to test the psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the Sense of Coherence Scale (C-SOC-13) in women with cervical cancer in Mainland China.Methods The C-SOC-13 and Health-related Quality of Life scale (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cervix) were administered to 238 women with cervical cancer. Validity was assessed in terms of factor validity, predictive validity, divergent validity and stability, whereas reliability was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient.Results This study showed that in confirmatory factor analysis, the first-order interrelated three-factor model and second-order model were performed based on Antonovsky's theoretical structure of Sense of Coherence (SOC). Both models fitted the data satisfactorily when the largest modification index was released. The chi-square value/degrees of freedom was 2.120, the goodness-of-fit index was 0.919, the root mean square error of approximation was 0.069, and the comparative fit index was 0.911. The Pearson correlation coefficient between SOC and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cervix was 0.611. Enter multiple regression with SOC as a dependent variable and medical and socio-economic variables as independent variables showed no statistically significant partial coefficient of any independent variable in regression equation except for age. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the scale was 0.824.Conclusion The factor validity, predictive validity and divergent validity of C-SOC-13 were reasonable, as well as the internal consistency. In general, C-SOC-13 showed to be suitable as an SOC measurement for women with cervical cancer in Mainland China. However, SOC may have a different meaning to Chinese people because of the philosophy and culture that shape the context of their lives. Generalizing the findings to other populations requires further psychometric evaluation of C-SOC-13. Further longitudinal studies are also needed to explore the stability. Abstract:The present study evaluates a brief, cross-cultural scale that maps a wide range of social resources, useful in large-scale assessments of perceived social support. The Brief Perceived Social Support Questionnaire (Fragebogen zur Sozialen Unterstützung Kurzform mit sechs Items, F-SozU K-6) was examined in representative and university student samples from the United States (Nrepresentative = 3038), Germany (Nrepresentative = 2007, Nstudent = 5406), Russia (Nrepresentative = 3020, Nstudent = 4001), and China (Nstudent = 13,582). Cross-cultural measurement invariance testing was conducted in both representative and student samples across countries. Scores on the F-SozU K-6 demonstrated good reliability and strong model fit for a unidimensional structure in all samples, with the exception of poor model fit for German students. The scores on F-SozU K-6 correlated negatively with scores on depression, anxiety, and stress measures and positively with scores on positive mental health measures. Norms for gender and age groups were established separately based on each representative sample. Cross-cultural measurement invariance testing found partial strong measurement invariance across three general population samples and three student samples. Furthermore, a simulation study showed that the amount of invariance observed in the partial invariance model had only a negligible impact on mean comparisons. Psychometric findings across diverse cultural contexts supported the robustness and validity of the F-SozU K-6 for cross-cultural epidemiologic studies.

Abstract:Sense of community coherence refers to how much a person perceives their communal life as comprehensible, manageable and meaningful. The study's purpose was to validate the Sense of Community Coherence Scale using two distinct groups of university students from Germany and Turkey. The scale was adapted to German and Turkish using the translation‐back translation method and examined in terms of several indicators of reliability and validity, including cross‐cultural measurement invariance with the data collected from 489 individuals from Germany and 533 individuals from Turkey. The findings exhibited satisfactory psychometric properties; specifically, high reliability, good construct and criterion validity, and partial measurement invariance across cultures were observed. As a result, Sense of Community Coherence Scale was concluded to be reliable and partially valid in the samples of Turkish and German university students. Validation of the German and Turkish forms of the scale is expected to contribute to mental health research and practice for allowing the measurement of how individuals feel about their community in the context of manageability, meaningfulness and comprehensibility. This study can help researchers and practitioners design enhancement, prevention and intervention programmes aiming to increase the community sense of coherence.

Abstract:The measurement of sense of coherence (SOC) has received attention for more than three decades. Despite the extensive use of SOC-13, there is still a long debate regarding its dimensionality structure. Recently, there has been an increasing use of network modeling as a valid alternative to latent-variable modeling. This study proposes an exploratory approach to the structure of SOC-13 by adopting a network perspective. The network structure was estimated with a Gaussian Graphical Model, and Exploratory Graph Analysis (EGA) was used to inspect network dimensionality. We fit and compared the unidimensional, first- and second-order confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), bifactor-CFA, and structure derived from EGA. Our results showed unacceptable fit values for the CFA models, suggesting that SOC-13 is not unidimensional. Inspection of the estimated network suggested that the SOC-13 items emerged as a dynamic system of mutually interacting nodes that formed three distinct clusters of items (communities) that are not those defined in the literature. EGA identified three communities of items: the first community was characterized by comprehensibility and manageability items, the second community was characterized by comprehensibility and manageability items, and the third dimension was characterized by all meaningfulness items and one comprehensibility item. Our study presented a novel perspective in investigating the structure of SOC-13 that strengthens the assumption that SOC should be conceptualized as a complex system of cognitive (comprehensibility), behavioral (manageability), and motivational dimensions (meaningfulness) that are deeply linked and not necessarily distinct.

Abstract:The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) is the most commonly used measure for life satisfaction. Although there are numerous studies confirming factorial validity, most studies on dimensionality are based on small samples. A controversial debate continues on the factorial invariance across different subgroups. The present study aimed to test psychometric properties, factorial structure, factorial invariance across age and gender, and to deliver population-based norms for the German general population from a large cross-sectional sample of 2519 subjects. Confirmatory factor analyses supported that the scale is one-factorial, even though indications of inhomogeneity of the scale have been detected. Both findings show invariance across the seven age groups and both genders. As indicators of the convergent validity, a positive correlation with social support and negative correlation with depressiveness was shown. Population-based norms are provided to support the application in the context of individual diagnostics.

Abstract:Assessment, Ahead of Print. The 24-item Social Provision Scale is among the most frequently used self-report scales to assess perceived social support. A shortened 10-item version (SPS-10) with promising psychometric properties has been proposed. However, so far only a few studies in specific cultural contexts investigated its psychometric properties. Thus, the aim of the current study was an extensive investigation of the psychometric properties of the SPS-10 among 38 countries (N = 88,857 respondents) using the COVIDiSTRESS Global Survey data. Item response theory bifactor analysis revealed that the general factor accounts for the largest part of the covariance among the items in all countries (explained common variance ≥ .75) and that the mean/sum score of the SPS-10 can be used as a total score of perceived general social support. Reliability was high for all countries (ρunidimensional GRM ≥ .89). Measurement invariance and differential item/test functioning analysis of the unidimensional graded response model indicated negligible differential test functioning across countries. The association with the external criteria mainly supported its construct validity. The SPS-10 is a psychometrically sound measure of perceived social support for large-scale cross-cultural studies.

Abstract:The construct of justice sensitivity has four perspectives that capture individual differences in the strength of reactions to injustice when becoming a victim of injustice (victim sensitivity), when witnessing injustice as an outsider (observer sensitivity), when passively benefitting from an injustice done to others (beneficiary sensitivity), or when committing an injustice (perpetrator sensitivity). Individual differences in these four justice sensitivity perspectives are highly relevant in moral research. With just eight items in total, the Justice Sensitivity Short Scales-8 (JSS-8) are a very efficient way to measure the four perspectives. JSS-8 was initially constructed in German (Ungerechtigkeitssensibilität-Skalen-8, USS-8) and later translated into English. In the present study, we empirically validated this English-language adaptation in a heterogeneous quota sample from the UK. The results show that the psychometric properties (i.e., reliability, validity, standardization) of JSS-8 are good, and that they are comparable with those of the German-language source version. Because of the invariance of loadings, intercepts, and residual variances, researchers can compare manifest scale statistics (i.e., means, variances) of JSS-8 across the UK and Germany. JSS-8 is thus particularly suitable for measuring justice sensitivity in various research areas with constraints on assessment time and questionnaire space.
Competitive Latent Structures for the Comic Style Markers: Developing a Psychometrically Sound Short Version Using Spanish and US American Samples

Abstract:The Comic Style Markers (CSM) is a questionnaire that allows a fine-grained description of how people differ in the way they display humor in their daily lives. It includes 48 statements capturing eight interrelated, yet distinct comic styles: fun, irony, wit, sarcasm, benevolent humor, satire, nonsense humor, and cynicism. Despite the independent conceptual roots of these humorous domains, the analysis of the CSM scales' latent structure shows that their empirical distinction needs to be improved. Using the information derived from a competitive latent approach, including confirmatory factor analysis, bifactor analysis, and exploratory structural equation modeling, we proposed and validated a shorter 24-item version of the CSM in a large sample of 925 Spanish individuals (SP-CSM-24). This scale-refinement improved the psychometric differentiation of the eight comic styles without undermining the good internal consistency and the temporal stability of the CSM scores. Strong invariance was held for gender and age groups, and partial scalar invariance for countries also emerged using a sample of 318 U.S. American adults. Structural equation modeling also corroborated a convincing test-criterion validity for the SP-CSM-24, with dispositional expressions of benevolent humor (positively) and cynicism (negatively) outperforming other comic styles in accounting for individuals' well-being.

Abstract:Given the critical role of socio-emotional skills in students' academic success, psychological well-being, and other critical life outcomes, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) developed the Survey on Social and Emotional Skills (SSES) to measure these skills among school-age students. However, the broad conceptual scope of socio-emotional skills necessitated the use of a large number of items (i.e., 120 items) in the original SSES, which poses challenges regarding survey administration and participant fatigue. To address these issues, this study aimed to develop a short form of the SSES (i.e., SSES-SF). The sample included 29,798 15-year-old students across 10 regions. We developed a 45-item version of SSES-SF using the machine learning approach of genetic algorithm, which is 62.5% shorter than the original 120-item SSES. The reliability, construct validity, reproduced information, concurrent validity, and measurement invariance of the SSES-SF were investigated. We found that the SSES-SF demonstrated satisfactory reliability, construct validity, and concurrent validity. Furthermore, the SSES-SF was able to reproduce a substantial amount of information from the original full-form SSES and exhibited measurement invariance across genders, regions, and language groups. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.

Questioning the stability of sense of coherence--the impact of socio-economic status and working conditions in the Canadian population

Abstract:Background: Much debate exists about the stability of the sense of coherence measure. This study examined changes in sense of coherence (SOC), and the variables associated with these changes, over a 4-year period, in a representative sample of the Canadian labour force (n=6,790). Methods: Two methods were used to assess change in SOC: (1) Change outside of that which could be considered as indistinguishable from measurement error, and (2) Change of more than 10%, which was originally proposed by Antonovksy, the scales designer. Results: Over the study period, 35.4% of the population reported changes in SOC outside the range we consider possible due to measurement error, with 58% reporting change greater than 10%. Unskilled occupations were associated with declines in SOC, with household income demonstrating a curvilinear relationship with decline in SOC in the female population only. None of the variables used predicted increases in SOC. Conclusions: Given the degree of change in SOC, and the representativeness of the study sample, we suggest that SOC has a large state component. Given this lack of stability, we recommend caution if using the SOC to represent a stable global orientation within a causal context.

Abstract:The article presents the results of the Russian-language adaptation of the Need for Closure Scale by A. Kruglyansky and D. Webster, which in its original English version includes 5 scales, 42 questions and additional 5 questions of the “Lie scale”. The scales of the questionnaire are: “The need for order” (10), “The need for predictability” (8), “Decisiveness” (7), “Avoidance of ambiguity” (9) and “Closed-mindedness” (8). For adapting the questionnaire, the following procedures and statistical methods were applied: double-blind forward and backward translation of the questionnaire; checking the discrimination of Ferguson’s ; consistency of Cronbach’s and McDonald’s for the entire test and individual test scales, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) by the method of maximum likelihood, testing of retest reliability, gender differences and external validity. The study involved 643 subjects at the factorization stage and 114 at the external validity stage. The obtained results for the Russian-language scales are: "the need for order" Cronbach’s = 0.81. "the need for predictability" Cronbach’s = .75 "decisiveness" Cronbach’s = .74. "avoidance of ambiguity" Cronbach’s = .65. "closedmindedness" Cronbach’s = .53. Checking the questionnaire (5-factor version, 38 questions) with the Structural Equation Modelling (SEM), indicators were obtained within the norm: 2/df = 4.08, SRMR = .078, RMSEA = .07, however, the CFI and TLI parameters do not correspond to the required norms (CFI = .67, TLI = .647 — below normal). In the test-retest the correlation obtained r =.72, with p .001. Based on the data obtained, a conclusion is made about the correspondence of the five-factor model of the questionnaire of 38 questions to foreign analogues in terms of the degree of consistency.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the theoretical structural model of the sources of meaning in the Chinese cultural situation,and based on this model to develop an instrument called the Sources of Meaning in Life-Chinese(SML-C).Methods: Based on item analysis,data were collected from 721 subjects.EFA and CFA were used to test their reliability and validity.Results: It was showed that the structure of sources of meaning in life included five components: Social Preoccupation,Self-Transcendence,Personal Relations,Life Enjoyment,Body and Mental Health,explaining 59.50% of the total variance;the result of CFA showed that the measurement model fit the data well.The Cronbach α coefficients of the total and each subscale were between 0.71-0.94.The correlations between SML-C and RVS,LRI and SOMP-R were significantly positive,which showed that SML-C had good criterion validity.Conclusion: The Sources of Meaning in Life-Chinese is a reliable and valid measure in Chinese culture,which can be used in future researches.

Abstract:Cultural differences in responses to a Likert scale were examined. Self-identified Chinese, Japanese, and Americans (N=136, 323, and 160, respectively) recruited at ethnic or general supermarkets in Southern California completed a 13-question Sense of Coherence scale with a choice of either four, five, or seven responses in either Chinese, Japanese, or English. The Japanese respondents more frequently reported difficulty with the scale, the Chinese more frequently skipped questions, and both these groups selected the midpoint more frequently on items that involved admitting to a positive emotion than did the Americans, who were more likely to indicate a positive emotion. Construct validity of the scale tended to be better for the Chinese and the Americans when there were four response choices and for the Japanese when there were seven. Although culture affected response patterns, the association of sense of coherence and health was positive in all three cultural groups.

Abstract:<span>The Schwartz Outcome Scale-10 is a 10-item measure that has proven utility for assessing well-being and mental health and measuring change over time. Although there is a Spanish translation of the measure created in the United States for the Latino population, its acceptability and psychometric properties have not been studied in unilingual Spanish speakers, nor outside the United States. The aim of the present study is to explore these properties in larger samples, clinical and non-clinical, from Latin America adding convergent validity checking and exploration of effects of gender and age on scores. A qualitative study was conducted with 11 participants to test for dialect/language issues, then a psychometric exploration of data from 886 participants in a non-clinical sample and 172 in a clinical sample. The results showed good psychometric characteristics and suggest that the SOS-10-E can be used in Latin America. A cutoff of 42.51 differentiates clinical scores from non-clinical. Future studies are needed to explore sensitivity to change and check replication in other Spanish speaking populations.</span>

Abstract:Background: in foreign science and practice, the Somatic Symptom Disorder — B Criteria Scale (SSD-12) is actively used in the diagnosis of cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects of somatization, as well as in screening and monitoring of somatoform disorder in the general population and in patients seeking primary health care. The aim of study: adaptation of the Russian version of the SSD-12 in the general population. Participants and methods: the sample consisted of 1,535 respondents who filled out, in addition to the SSD-12, a set of diagnostic measures assessing anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, GAD-7), depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9, PHQ-9), and somatization (Somatic Symptom Scale-8, SSS-8). Results: the adapted scale has a three-factor structure that allows diagnosing cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects of somatization (SB χ 2 (51) = 656, p < 0,001; CFI = 0,942; TLI = 0,925; SRMR = 0,037; RMSEA = 0,088 (CI 95% 0,082–0,094)). The reliability has been proven using acceptable internal consistency. The validity was confirmed by the expected correlations between somatization according to the SSD-12 and SSS-8, anxiety according to the GAD-7, and depression according to the PHQ-9. The specificity and sensitivity were determined using ROC curves for cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects of somatization. Conclusion: the Russian version of the SSD-12 is psychometrically consistent and can be recommended as a diagnostic instrument for assessing of cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects of somatization in the general population.
