Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) has been severely polluting the atmosphere and deteriorating human beings' sustainable lives. Therefore, development of gas sensors for high-selectivity and high-sensitivity detection of NO2 has been attracting increasing attention. The state-of-the-art inorganic NO2 gas sensors require harsh fabrication conditions or toxic materials, making the devices intrinsically eco-unfriendly. Furthermore, in most cases the sensors work at high temperatures. These disadvantages severely impede their practical applications. Herein, we report a room-temperature and highly-integrated NO2 sensor composed of p-type self-assembled peptide fibrillar nanoforests (SPNFs) scaffolded with n-type SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) heterojunctions. The p-n conformations provide efficient access to target gases and allow reliable electron transformations, while the SPNFs afford a large specific surface area and multiporous structures for gas adsorption and SnO2 NPs dispersion, resulting in an ultrahigh selectivity for NO2 detection. Especially, the sensing performance can be optimized by modulating the thickness and density of the SPNFs, showing a high response, short response and recovery times, along with a low detection limitation. Our strategy demonstrates the development of a bioinspired platform by utilizing peptide selfassemblies to fabricate integrated sensors for polluting gas detections.

Abstract:Abstract Ever-increasing concerns over air quality and the newly emerged internet of things (IoT) for future environmental monitoring are stimulating the development of ultrasensitive room-temperature gas sensors, especially for nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), one of the most harmful air pollution species released round-the-clock from power plants and vehicle exhausts. Herein, tin dioxide nanorods/ethylenediamine-modified reduced graphene oxide (SnO 2 /EDA-rGO) heterojunctions with selective adsorption and electronic structure modulation were engineered for highly sensitive and selective detection of NO 2 at room temperature. The modified EDA groups not only enable selective adsorption to significantly enrich NO 2 molecules around the interface but also realize a favorable modulation of SnO 2 /EDA-rGO electronic structure by increasing the Fermi level of rGO, through which the sensing performance of NO 2 is synergistically enhanced. The response of the SnO 2 /EDA-rGO sensor toward 1 ppm NO 2 reaches 282%, which exceeds the corresponding SnO 2 /rGO sensor by a factor of 2.8. It also exhibits a low detection limit down to 100 ppb, enhanced selectivity, and rapid response/recovery kinetics. This approach to designing a novel heterojunction with significantly enhanced chemical and electric effects may shed light on the future engineering of gas-sensing materials.

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) 2 ) is one of the most common toxic gases, which not only impairs human health but also produces secondary pollutants induced by sunlight via associated photochemical reactions. Herein, we design a high-performance NO2 2 sensor based on the N-doped carbon dots/SnS2 2 (N-CDs/SnS2) 2 ) heterostructure using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The DFT results approve that the decoration of N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) onto the SnS2 2 nanosheet enhances adsorption capacity and electron transportation compared with those of pure SnS2, 2 , significantly enhancing the sensing responses. In addition, these in-situ synthesized N-CDs onto SnS2 2 nanosheet leads to band alignment, thereby significantly improves conductivity and enhances transportation and storage properties of carriers via a synergistic interaction. Furthermore, employment of UV illumination significantly increases active adsorption sites and enhances response and recovery kinetics. As a result, the developed NO2 2 sensor achieves fast responses of a few seconds and a limit of detection down to sub-ppb-level with the help of UV illumination. It also shows good linearly, operated in both air and oxygen-free environments, at both room or low temperature (238 K) conditions. The developed multi-framework offers an efficient and precision detection of NO2 2 with ultrafast responses and ultralow concentrations in multiple environments.

Abstract:A wireless sensor system using a platinum nanocluster decorated 3D metal oxide nanotube array significantly enhances the sensitivity and selectivity of NO2 detection, achieving ultrahigh sensitivity with the record limit of detection down to 107 parts per trillion and selective NO2 sensing among the interfering gases, which plays a vital role in future real‐time safety and healthy living monitoring. Semiconductor chemiresistive gas sensors play critical roles in a smart and sustainable city where a safe and healthy environment is the foundation. However, the poor limits of detection and selectivity are the two bottleneck issues limiting their broad applications. Herein, a unique sensor design with a 3D tin oxide (SnO2) nanotube array as the sensing layer and platinum (Pt) nanocluster decoration as the catalytic layer, is demonstrated. The Pt/SnO2 sensor significantly enhances the sensitivity and selectivity of NO2 detection by strengthening the adsorption energy and lowering the activation energy toward NO2. It not only leads to ultrahigh sensitivity to NO2 with a record limit of detection of 107 parts per trillion, but also enables selective NO2 sensing while suppressing the responses to interfering gases. Furthermore, a wireless sensor system integrated with sensors, a microcontroller, and a Bluetooth unit is developed for the practical indoor and on‐road NO2 detection applications. The rational design of the sensors and their successful demonstration pave the way for future real‐time gas monitoring in smart home and smart city applications.

Abstract:The study pioneers the use of nonprecious metal electrochemical sensing materials, specifically nitrided In2O3, for NO2 detection. The In2O3 N‐40 min sensor exhibits a robust response (771 nA to 10 ppm NO2), exceptional stability (>30 days), and rapid recovery (5/16 s), outperforming Pt/C with 63 times higher selectivity and 98% longer stability. Efficient gas sensors are critical for environmental monitoring and industrial safety. While metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors are cost‐effective, they struggle with poor selectivity, high operating temperatures, and limited stability. Electrochemical sensors, though selective and energy‐efficient, face high costs, and stability issues due to precious metal catalysts like platinum on carbon (Pt/C). Herein, a novel, cost‐effective electrochemical sensor using nitrogen‐doped indium oxide In2O3−xN2x/3Vx/3 (0.01≤x≤0.14), synthesized with varying nitriding times is presented. The optimized In2O3 N‐40 min sensor demonstrates a remarkable response current of 771 nA to 10 ppm nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at ambient temperature, with outstanding long‐term stability (over 30 days) and rapid response/recovery times (5/16 s). Compared to Pt/C sensors, it shows 84% and 67% reductions in response and recovery times, respectively, and maintains 98% performance after a month, versus 68% for Pt/C. This cost‐effective sensor presents a promising alternative for electrochemical gas sensing, eliminating the need for precious metal catalysts.

Abstract:Highly sensitive detection of nitric dioxide (NO2) has recently attracted much attention due to its harmful to the human health even at a low concentration of 0.1 parts per million (ppm). Herein, In2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared via a facile ionic liquid (IL) assisted solvothermal method with subsequent calcination and then were analyzed through the characterization of X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption techniques. Morphological characterization demonstrated that the resultant compounds were In2O3 NPs with a diameter ranging from 20 to 30 nm. The gas sensor based on the In2O3 NPs prepared with IL exhibited excellent NO2-sensing properties in terms of fast response/recovery speed (26.6/10.0 s), high response (310.0), good repeatability and long-term stability to 10 ppm NO2 gas at low working temperature of 92 °C. The gas-sensing mechanism of In2O3 NPs to NO2 was represented to the surface adsorption control model and the possibilities relating to the improved NO2 sensing performance of the In2O3 NPs synthesized with IL-assisted were also discussed in detail.

Abstract:We demonstrate novel nanohybrids of indium- and ruthenium-doped SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) on a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) surface prepared using a simple one-pot method at a relatively low temperature. The size of the doped SnO2 NPs on the RGO is as small as 2-3 nm with uniform distribution. We find that the introduction of dopants facilitates the NP nucleation on graphene oxide. The gas sensing responses of the resulting nanohybrids demonstrate that the addition of indium in SnO2 significantly enhances the sensitivity to NO2 compared with RGO-SnO2. The sensor also shows excellent selectivity to NO2 when other common gases such as NH3, H-2, CO and H2S, are present. The sensing mechanism responsible for the superior sensitivity and selectivity of the nanohybrids is also discussed.

Abstract:Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets were self-assembled onto the surfaces of electrospun polymer nanofibers to form an ultrathin coating. These rGO/polymer composite nanofibers were used to fabricate nitrogen dioxide (NO2) sensor. This sensor can be performed at room temperature, and it exhibited a high sensitivity of 1.03 ppm(-1) with excellent selectivity and good reversibility. Furthermore, the limit of detection was experimentally measured to be as low as 150 ppb, and this value is much lower than the threshold exposure limit proposed by American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (200 ppb).

Abstract:Nitrite ions present a significant risk to both environmental and human health, necessitating precise and sensitive detection methods. Herein, we fabricated a highly sensitive SERS sensor based on PVDF/Au nanofibers for nitrite ion detection. The synthesis of PVDF nanofibers involved the utilization of electrospinning apparatus, while the uniformity and high density of SERS activity "hot spots" were achieved by directly coating plasma gold nanoparticles onto the PVDF surface adopting thermal evaporation. The efficient charge transfers of the interface dipole layer directly generated on the surface of PVDF nanofibers were achieved through thermal evaporation. The enhanced Raman responses owe to the combined effects of local surface plasmon resonance of Au nanoparticles and photoelectric and piezoelectric properties of PVDF. It is noteworthy that the prepared SERS substrate exhibited high sensitivity towards Rhodamine 6G, boasting an enhancement factor of 9.4 × 107 and a detecting scope spanning from 10-6  10-11 M. Furthermore, the PVDF/Au membrane functionalized with p-aminothiophenol (PATP) effectively captured NO2- ions at concentrations as low as 10-8 M and successfully detected NO2- in river water samples. Additionally, the SERS substrate has good repeatability and stability, and can be applied to trace detection in food detection and medical diagnosis.

Abstract:Developing an effective and convenient nitrite detection method is indispensable in food safety, environmental monitoring, clinical diagnosis of diseases, and many other areas. Herein, a dicyanoisophorone derivative, TMN-NH2 with large Stokes shift and near-infrared (NIR) emission, was proposed as a ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetric dual-mode probe for the rapid determination of NO2- in acidic media, showing excellent selectivity and high sensitivity. The sensing mechanism is based on the diazotization of TMN-NH2 with NO2- and subsequent diazonium salt hydrolysis to form a hydroxyl-substituted product (TMN-OH). Under the optimized conditions of reaction and detection, a new quantitative analysis method based on TMN-NH2 was established for NO2- detection, exhibiting good linear relationships to NO2- in the range of 0.5 to 15 μM with practical detection limits of 26.6 nM and 17.6 nM for the colorimetric and fluorescent readout, respectively. The quantitative detection of NO2- in real samples demonstrated satisfactory recoveries and repeatability. Moreover, TMN-NH2 was successfully applied for monitoring NO2- in Escherichia coli by confocal fluorescence imaging.
A novel electrochemical sensor with NiSx@MoS2 composite for efficient NO2- sensing

Abstract:Excess nitrites are potentially threatening to human health, so it is urgent to develop accurate and sensitive methods. The development of sensors can provide early warning of possible hazards and alert people to protect public health. This work presents an NiSx@MoS2-composite with excellent electrochemical activity, representing a key finding for highly sensitive NO2- detection and sensor development. With the assistance of NiSx@MoS2, this electrochemical sensor has excellent quantitative detection performance. It has a wide detection range (0.0001-0.0020 mg/mL) and a low detection limit (1.863*10-5 mg/mL) for NO2-. This electrochemical sensor maintains excellent specificity among numerous interferences, and it completes the accurate detection of different real food samples. Pleasingly, the electrochemical sensor has satisfactory repeatability stability, and potential for practical applications. It would demonstrate tremendous potential in scientific dietary guidance, food safety detection and other fields.

Abstract:The highly sensitive detection of ppb-level NO 2 at room temperature (RT, 25 °C) remains a challenge hindering the detection of metal oxides due to their chemical inactivity. Herein, a strategy for constructing mixed metal oxides with high specific surface areas and highly active surfaces is proposed. In this work, we synthesized NiO-SnO 2 using the solvothermal and calcination methods with Ni/Sn bimetallic organic frameworks (Ni/Sn-BTC MOFs, BTC: benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic) as sacrificial templates. The characterization shows that NiO-SnO 2 has a high porosity (0.343 m 3 /g) and a large specific surface area (74.73 m 2 /g), which can produce abundant permeability pathways for NO 2 , maximize the number of active sites, and enhance the capacity for NO 2 capture. The sensing test results indicate that the NiO-SnO 2 sensor exhibits an excellent sensing response of 693.1% (ΔR/R a ) to 150 ppb NO 2 , a fast response/recovery time (86.8/29.4 s), a distinct selectivity, a lower detection limit (25 ppb) and good long-term stability at RT and 60% RH (RH: relative humidity). The outstanding sensing performance can be attributed to the microstructure characteristics, oxygen vacancies and p-n heterojunctions formed between NiO and SnO 2 . The current work provides a versatile platform for designing sensitive materials with heterogeneous structures and opens up a new pathway for the development of room temperature gas sensors based on metal oxide.

Amplitude Modulated Multimode-Diode-laser-based Cavity Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy with a Phase-Sensitive Detection for High-Sensitivity NO2 Detection

Abstract:Accurate and sensitive measurements of NO2 play an extremely important role in atmospheric studies. In the past 20 years, high sensitivity, precision, and accurate NO2 detection technology has developed rapidly, especially optical methods based on high-finesse cavities. In combination with chemical conversion, NO2 detector is used to measure a range of other important reactive atmospheric species, such as total reactive nitrogen (total peroxy nitrate (ΣPNs), total alkyl nitrate (ΣANs), and nitric acid (HNO3)), total peroxy radicals, O3 and nitric oxide (NO), which greatly enhanced our understanding of nitrogen chemistry, free radical chemistry, and atmospheric oxidation capacity.In this presentation, we will report the development of an Amplitude Modulated multimode-diode-laser-based Cavity Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy (AM-CEAS) system operating at 406 nm that uses phase-sensitive detection for extremely sensitive NO2 detection. A detection limit of 35 pptv (1σ, 1s) was achieved with reflectivity R ~ 99.985% (ring-down time τ0 ~ 10.87 μs). When the integration time was extended to 30 s, the precision can be further improved to 8 pptv. The reported AM-CEAS method provides a powerful, straightforward, and general method for ultra-sensitive absorption and extinction measurements.

Abstract:Increasing concerns about air quality due to fossil fuel combustion, especially nitrogen oxides (NOx) from marine and diesel engines, necessitate advanced monitoring systems due to the significant health and environmental impacts of nitrogen dioxide (NO2). In this study, a gas detection system based on the principle of the non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) technique is proposed. Firstly, the pyroelectric detector was developed by employing an ultra-thin LiTaO3 (LT) layer as the sensitive element, integrated with nanoscale carbon material prepared by wafer-level graphics technology as the infrared absorption layer. Then, the sensor was hermetically sealed using inert gas through energy storage welding technology, exhibiting a high detectivity (D*) value of 4.19 × 108 cm·√Hz/W. Subsequently, a NO2 gas sensor was engineered based on the NDIR principle employing a Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) infrared (IR) emitter, featuring a light path chamber length of 1.5 m, along with integrated signal processing and software calibration algorithms. This gas sensor was capable of detecting NO2 concentrations within the range of 0–500 ppm. Initial tests indicated that the gas sensor exhibited a full-scale relative error of less than 0.46%, a limit of 2.8 ppm, a linearity of −1.09%, a repeatability of 0.47% at a concentration of 500 ppm, and a stability of 2% at a concentration of 500 ppm. Abstract:Continuous real-time monitoring of hazardous gases is essential for safeguarding public health and environmental integrity, necessitating the utilization of highly selective and sensitive gas sensors. Herein, the chemiresistive sensor for NO 2 was fabricated based on Bi nanoparticles (NPs) doped Mn-porphyrin MOF PCN-222-Mn (Bi@PCN-222-Mn) through a straightforward in situ reduction process. Bi NPs serve as electron donors, facilitating the migration of electrons towards the PCN-222-Mn through the formation of a Schottky barrier caused by electrostatic interaction. Besides the Mn-porphyrin as detecting site in PCN-222-Mn, the Bi NPs in Bi@PCN-222-Mn act as supportive sites, enabling NO 2 adsorption and electron transfer to NO 2 simultaneously, thus enhancing the response signal amplification. Consequently, Bi@PCN-222-Mn exhibited the specific sensing for NO 2 with 5 times higher sensitivity (238.6 % ppm −1 ) in the range of 0.05–2 ppm and a lower limit of detection (LOD) (13 ppb) compared to PCN-222-Mn. Moreover, the Bi@PCN-222-Mn-based chemiresistive sensor also exhibited outstanding long-term stability and moisture resistance, applicable for the practical detection of NO 2 . These results prove the feasibility of improvement of gas detection performance by introducing metal NPs as electron mediator and an idea for the application of MOFs in gas sensing.

An acid-free sensing strategy for detecting nitrite using dihydroquinoline-8-carboxylate as a probe

Abstract:Nitrite (NO2-) has been identified as a typical pollutant harmful to the human body and heavily assayed in the fields of food safety and water quality control. The mainstream sensing strategies for detecting NO2- depend on Griess reaction or its improved methods which employ Griess reaction to initiate further inter-or intramolecular interaction to generate readout signals. However, a significant drawback of these methods is the use of strongly acidic media. In this study, we designed and synthesized a new NO2--specific fluorescent probe (ethyl 3-cyano-2-hydroxy-5-imino-8-(3-methoxy-3-oxopropyl)-4-(pyridin-2-yl)-5,8-dihydroquinoline-8-carboxylate, DHQC). DHQC exhibited strong green fluorescence in an acetonitrile-PBS (10 mM) mixed system (pH 7.0). In the neutral medium and at room temperature, the fluorescence of DHQC changed from green to blue with the addition of NO2-. The preliminary mechanistic investigation reveals that NO2- can induce the decarboxylation of the probe DHQC. Based on this finding, a high sensitive and selective method for NO2--detection was established, which showed good linearity in a range of 5∼50 μM with a limit detection of 3.5 nM (3σ). Given the unique properties of DHQC, a DHQC-loaded hydrogel bead device was further developed and employed for rapid monitoring of NO2-, exhibiting the advantages of simple preparation, high sensitivity, and fast response compared with traditional sensing reagents. In addition, DHQC was also used as a fluorescent probe for cell-imaging in live cells, exhibiting good cell permeability and biocompatibility. This study proposes a potential strategy for constructing smart fluorimetric probes used for NO2- detection.
Molecularly specific detection towards trace nitrogen dioxide by utilizing Schottky-junction-based Gas Sensor

Abstract:Trace NO2 detection is essential for the production and life, where the sensing strategy is appropriate for rapid detection but lacks molecular specificity. This investigation proposes a sensing mechanism dominated by surface-scattering to achieve the molecularly-specific detection. Two-dimensional Bi2O2Se is firstly fabricated into a Schottky-junction-based gas-sensor. Applied with an alternating excitation, the sensor simultaneously outputs multiple response signals (i.e., resistance, reactance, and the impedance angle). Their response times are shorter than 200 s at room temperature. In NO2 sensing, these responses present the detection limit in ppt range and the sensitivity is up to 16.8 %·ppb-1. This NO2 sensitivity presents orders of magnitude higher than those of the common gases within the exhaled breath. The impedance angle is involved in the principle component analysis together with the other two sensing signals. Twelve kinds of typical gases containing NO2 are acquired with molecular characteristics. The change in dipole moment of the target molecule adsorbed is demonstrated to correlate with the impedance angle via surface scattering. The proposed mechanism is confirmed to output ultra-sensitive sensing responses with the molecular characteristic.
