Abstract:The article considers an opportunity of simultaneous pulsed acceleration of seven proton beams with current one hundred milliamps in each beam. The accelerator consists of two parts. In the first part of the accelerator having the length five meters, the protons are accelerated to the energy of mega electron Volts. Consumption of high-frequency power by this part of the accelerator is equal to mega Watts. In the second part of the accelerator having the length fifty meters, the protons are accelerated to the finite energy eighty mega electron Volts. Consumption of the high frequency power by the second part of the accelerator is seventy fours mega Watts. The radial focus of the proton beam in the first and second parts of the accelerator is carried out with the magnetic field ten Tesla which is generated by a superconducting solenoid.
High Intensity Proton Beam Transportation Through Fringe Field of 70 MeV Compact Cyclotron to Beam Line Targets

Abstract:From the stripping points, the high intensity proton beam of a compact cyclotron travels through the fringe field area of the machine to the combination magnet. Starting from there the beams with various energy is transferred to the switching magnet for distribution to the beam line targets. In the design of the extraction and transport system for the compact proton cyclotron facilities, such as the 70MeV in France and the 100MeV in China, the space charge effect as the beam crosses the fringe field has not been previously considered; neither has the impact on transverse beam envelope coupled from the longitudinal direction. Those have been concerned much more with the higher beam-power because of the beam loss problem. In this paper, based on the mapping data of 70MeV cyclotron including the fringe field by BEST Cyclotron Inc (BEST) and combination magnet field by China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE), the beam extraction and transport are investigated for the 70MeV cyclotron used on the SPES project at Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (INFN–LNL). The study includes the space charge effect and longitudinal and transverse coupling mentioned above, as well as the matching of beam optics using the beam line for medical isotope production as an example. In addition, the designs of the ±45° switching magnets and the 60° bending magnet for the extracted beam with the energy from 35MeV to 70MeV have been made. Parts of the construction and field measurements of those magnets have been done as well. The current result shows that, the design considers the complexity of the compact cyclotron extraction area and fits the requirements of the extraction and transport for high intensity proton beam, especially at mA intensity levels.
High-quality GeV Proton Beam Generation from Multiple-Laser Interaction with Double-Layer Target

Abstract:A scheme for significantly enhancing the beam quality of laser-driven proton acceleration is proposed and investigated with particle-in-cell simulation: two linearly polarized Gaussian laser pulses obliquely irradiate a double-layer target that acquires a periodic surface structure that reduces the reflection, improves the focusing, and enhances the energy coupling of the third, or main, laser pulse that follows. The oblique pulses also provide some initial kinetic energy to the initially static target electrons and thus protons, which is very crucial for efficient acceleration. As a result, a proton beam of 1.15 GeV peak energy, very low energy spread ∼4%, and small divergence angle ∼5° can be obtained with laser intensities of 1021 W cm−2, which is significantly lower than that of the other recently proposed schemes.

Abstract:The article considers a proton accelerator containing seven independent beams arranged on the accelerator radius. The current in each beam is one hundred milliamps. The initial part of the accelerator consists of shielded spiral waveguides assembled in the common screen. The frequency of the acceleration: three hundred megahertz, high-frequency power twenty-five megawatts, the length of the accelerator six meters. After reaching the proton energy of six megaelektronvolts the protons using lenses with the azimuthal magnetic field are collected in one beam. Further beam acceleration is performed in the array of superconducting cavities tuned to the frequency one and three tenths gigahertz. The acceleration rate is equal to twenty megavolt per meter, the high-frequency power consumption fifteen megawatts per meter.

Abstract:S-band high-gradient accelerating structures were proposed to accelerate protons from 30 to 230 MeV for a compact proton therapy linac in Institute of Modern Physics. A backward traveling wave structure and a single-periodic magnetically coupled standing wave structure were designed, and differences between these two structures were analyzed to select a more suitable one for the proton therapy linac. In this paper, a novel single-periodic magnetically coupled standing-wave accelerating structure was studied, with an optimized nose cone that related to a smaller peak surface electric field and higher shunt impedance, with the reduced number of coupling holes and mechanical von Mises stress thus making it possible for higher duty factor and longer rf pulse operation, also with larger coupling holes and improved cell-to-cell coupling thus making this structure suitable for operating in π mode. An 11-cell high-power prototype for β=0.26 particles was developed with an active length of 143 mm. This prototype cavity is supposed to operate at an accelerating gradient of 30 MV/m with 0.1% duty factor, corresponding to a maximum surface electric field of 105 MV/m and a peak rf power of 3.43 MW. Abstract:An energetic proton beam with a high divergence cone angle of ∼10°, generated by the interaction of a 25 fs, 800 nm Ti: Sapphire laser pulse with a thin metal foil target, was transported and focused at a specified distance from the source. A pulsed high-voltage solenoid, which generates a magnetic field of 5.7 T at a current of 8 kA, was developed in-house for this purpose. The profile of the proton beam was monitored online at various positions using a combination of a fast thin plastic scintillator and a CCD camera. The effect of solenoid misalignment on the focused proton beam was also investigated experimentally. In addition, the proton beam was transported out of the vacuum chamber into the ambient air for radiography application. A proton flux of ∼2 × 10 8 protons (energy >4 MeV) was transported and focused at a distance of 1.27 m from the target with a transmission efficiency of 30 % in a single shot. Detailed simulations incorporating particle tracing and transfer matrix method were performed to highlight the role of beam chromaticity and the impact of spherical harmonics on the focusing characteristics of the solenoid. The simulation results qualitatively reproduce the experimental observations. The solenoid provides energy-selective proton focusing for a broad energy proton beam. The proton beam was used for the radiography of reference meshes and has the potential to be used for radiobiological irradiation studies.

Abstract:The acceleration of protons in the interaction of a circularly polarized laser pulse with a thin foil is investigated. For circular-polarization laser pulses, the quasi-equilibrium for electrons is established due to the light pressure and the electrostatic field built up at the interacting front of the laser pulse. The protons located within the skin depth of the laser pulse can be synchronously accelerated and bunched like phase-stable acceleration in a conventional radio-frequency accelerator, so that a high-current proton beam with a low energy spread is generated. It has been proved by 1-D particle-in-cell simulations.

Abstract:For the application of high intensity continuous wave（CW） proton beam acceleration, a new superconducting accelerating structure for extremely low β protons working in TE210 mode has been proposed at Peking University. The cavity consists of eight electrodes and eight accelerating gaps. The cavity’s longitudinal length is368.5 mm, and its transverse dimension is 416 mm. The RF frequency is 162.5 MHz, and the designed proton input energy is 200 ke V. A peak field optimization has been performed for the lower surface field. The accelerating gaps are adjusted by phase sweeping based on KONUS beam dynamics. The first four gaps are operated at negative synchronous RF phase to provide longitudinal focusing. The subsequent gaps are 0?sections which can minimize the transverse defocusing effect. Solenoids are placed outside the cavity to provide transverse focusing. Numerical calculation shows that the transverse defocusing of the KONUS phase is about three times smaller than that of the conventional negative synchronous RF phase. The beam dynamics of a 10 m A CW proton beam is simulated by the Trace Win code. The simulation results show that the beam’s transverse size is under effective control, while the increase in the longitudinal direction is slightly large. Both the Trace Win simulation and the numerical calculation show that the cavity has a relatively high effective accelerating gradient of 2.6 MV/m. On the whole, our results show that this new accelerating structure may be a possible candidate for superconducting operation at such a low energy range.
Design of a Compact Beam Transport System for Laser-Driven Proton Therapy

Abstract:Abstract We put forward a new design of a compact beam transport system for intense laser-driven proton therapy, where instead of using conventional pulsed solenoids, our design relies on a helical coil irradiated by a nanosecond laser pulse to generate strong magnetic fields for focusing protons. A pair of dipole magnets and apertures are employed to further filter protons with large divergences and low energies. Our numerical studies combine particle-in-cell simulations for laser-plasma interaction to generate high-energy monoenergetic proton beams, finite element analysis for evaluating the magnetic field distribution inside the coil, and Monte-Carlo simulations for beam transport and energy deposition. Our results show that with this design, a spread-out Bragg peak in a range of several centimeters to a deep-seated tumor with a dose of approximately 16.5 cGy and fluctuation around 2% can be achieved. The instantaneous dose rate reaches up to 109 Gy/s, holding the potential for future FLASH radiotherapy research.

Abstract:Theoretical investigations show that linearly and radially polarized multiterawatt and petawatt laser beams, focused to subwavelength waist radii, can directly accelerate protons and carbon nuclei, over micron-size distances, to the energies required for hadron cancer therapy. Design of a 10 MeV normal conducting CW proton linac based on equidistant multi-gap CH cavities

Abstract:The continue wave (CW) high current proton linac has wide applications as the front end of the high power proton machines. The low energy part is the most difficult one and there is no widely accepted solution yet. Based on the analysis of the focusing properties of the CW low energy proton linac, a 10 MeV low energy normal conducting proton linac based on equidistant seven-gap Cross-bar H-type (CH) cavities is proposed. The linac is composed of ten 7-gap CH cavities and the transverse focusing is maintained by the quadrupole doublets located between cavities. The total length of the linac is less than 6 meters and the average acceleration gradient is about 1.2 MeV/m. The electromagnetic properties of the cavities are investigated by Microwave Studio. At the nominal acceleration gradient the maximum surface electric field in the cavities is less than 1.3 times Kilpatrick limit, and the Ohmic loss of each cavity is less than 35 kW. The multi-particle beam dynamics simulations are performed with the help of the Tracewin code, the results show that the beam dynamics of the linac is quite stable, and the linac has the capability to accelerate up to 30 mA beam with acceptable dynamics behavior.

Abstract:A new scheme for a laser-driven proton accelerator based on a sharply tailored near-critical-density plasma target is proposed. The designed plasma profile allows for the laser channeling of the dense plasma, which triggers a two-stage acceleration of protons-first accelerated by the laser acting as a snowplow in plasma, and then by the collisionless shock launched from the sharp density downramp. Thanks to laser channeling in the near-critical plasma, the formed shock is radially small and collimated. This allows it to generate a significant space-charge field, which acts as a monochromator, defocusing the lower energy protons while the highest ones remain collimated. Our theoretical and numerical analysis demonstrates production of high-energy proton beams with few tens of percent energy spread, few degrees divergence angle and charge up to few nC. With a PW-class ultrashort laser this scheme predicts the generation of such high quality proton beams with energies up to several hundreds of MeV.

Abstract:This paper reports the design, fabrication, and results of the high-gradient conditioning and testing for a two-cell, π -mode, standing wave normal-conducting prototype booster cavity for the proposed 3 GeV proton linac upgrade at Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Increasing the energy of proton beam from the existing 800 MeV to 3 GeV will improve resolution of the proton radiography by up to 10 times. The proposed energy boost can be achieved with a compact normal-conducting high-gradient radio-frequency (rf) linac section. The C-band section of the booster linac was designed with optimized-shaped copper accelerator cavities with distributed rf coupling. A short two-cell test prototype structure was designed for the frequency of 5.712 GHz, fabricated, and tested at the C-band Engineering Research Test Facility in New Mexico (CERF-NM) at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The maximum klystron power coupled into the test structure was 8.3 MW with 1 μs pulse length and 100 Hz repetition rate. The breakdown probabilities were recorded as functions of the accelerating gradient and peak surface fields. A Principled Framework for Constructing Natural Language Interfaces To Temporal Databases

Abstract:Most existing natural language interfaces to databases (NLIDBs) were designed to be used with ``snapshot'' database systems, that provide very limited facilities for manipulating time-dependent data. Consequently, most NLIDBs also provide very limited support for the notion of time. The database community is becoming increasingly interested in _temporal_ database systems. These are intended to store and manipulate in a principled manner information not only about the present, but also about the past and future. This thesis develops a principled framework for constructing English NLIDBs for _temporal_ databases (NLITDBs), drawing on research in tense and aspect theories, temporal logics, and temporal databases. I first explore temporal linguistic phenomena that are likely to appear in English questions to NLITDBs. Drawing on existing linguistic theories of time, I formulate an account for a large number of these phenomena that is simple enough to be embodied in practical NLITDBs. Exploiting ideas from temporal logics, I then define a temporal meaning representation language, TOP, and I show how the HPSG grammar theory can be modified to incorporate the tense and aspect account of this thesis, and to map a wide range of English questions involving time to appropriate TOP expressions. Finally, I present and prove the correctness of a method to translate from TOP to TSQL2, TSQL2 being a temporal extension of the SQL-92 database language. This way, I establish a sound route from English questions involving time to a general-purpose temporal database language, that can act as a principled framework for building NLITDBs. To demonstrate that this framework is workable, I employ it to develop a prototype NLITDB, implemented using ALE and Prolog.

Abstract:A two-stage proton acceleration scheme using present-day intense lasers and a unique target design is proposed. The target system consists of a hollow cylinder, inside which is a hollow cone, which is followed by the main target with a flat front and dish-like flared rear surface. At the center of the latter is a tapered proton layer, which is surrounded by outer proton layers at an angle to it. In the first acceleration stage, protons in both layers are accelerated by target normal sheath acceleration. The center-layer protons are accelerated forward along the axis and the side protons are accelerated and focused towards them. As a result, the side-layer protons radially compress as well as axially further accelerate the front part of the accelerating center-layer protons in the second stage, which are also radially confined and guided by the field of the fast electrons surrounding them. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation shows that a 79fs 8.5x10(20) W/cm(2) laser pulse can produce a proton bunch with similar to 267MeV maximum energy and similar to 9.5% energy spread, which may find many applications, including cancer therapy.

Abstract:The quality of the proton beam produced by target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA) with high-power lasers can be significantly improved with the use of helical coils. While they showed promising results in terms of focusing, their performances in terms of the of cut-off energy and bunching stay limited due to the dispersive nature of helical coils. A new scheme of helical coil with a tube surrounding the helix is introduced, and the first numerical simulations and an analytical model show a possibility of a drastic reduction of the current pulse dispersion for the parameters of high-power-laser facilities. The helical coils with tube strongly increase bunching, creating two collimated narrow-band proton beams from a broad and divergent TNSA distribution. Abstract:The acceleration of charged particles, producing collimated monoenergetic beams, over short distances holds the promise to offer new tools in medicine and diagnostics. Here, we consider a possible mechanism for accelerating protons to high energies by using a phase modulated circularly polarized electromagnetic wave propagating along a constant magnetic field. It is observed that a plane wave with dimensionless amplitude of 0.1 is capable to accelerate a 1 keV proton to 386 MeV under optimum conditions. Finally, we discuss possible limitations of the acceleration scheme.

Abstract:An electron-beam accelerator based on spiral water pulse forming line which consists of a primary storage capacitor system, an air core spiral strip transformer, a spiral pulse forming line of water dielectric, and a field-emission diode, is described. The experimental results showed that the diode voltage is more than 500 kV, the electron beam current of diode is about 24 kA, and the pulse duration is about 200 us. The main parameters of the accelerator were calculated theoretically. The distributions for electrical field in the pulse forming line were obtained by the simulations. In addition, the process of the accelerator charging a spiral pulse forming line was simulated through the Pspice software to get the waveforms of charging voltage of pulse forming line, the diode voltage and diode current of accelerator. The theoretical and simulated results agree with the experimental results. This accelerator is very compact and works stably and reliably.

Abstract:We report an efficient and stable scheme to generate ∼200 MeV proton bunch by irradiating a two-layer targets (near-critical density layer+solid density layer with heavy ions and protons) with a linearly polarized Gaussian pulse at intensity of 6.0×1020 W/cm2. Due to self-focusing of laser and directly accelerated electrons in the near-critical density layer, the proton energy is enhanced by a factor of 3 compared to single-layer solid targets. The energy spread of proton is also remarkably reduced. Such scheme is attractive for applications relevant to tumor therapy.
