Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the structural effects of supported metal catalysts at the molecular level is extremely important for developing high-performance catalysts that are widely used in industry, which is still a longstanding attractive but challenging topic in multidisciplinary fields. In this work, we report the strong effects of local coordination structures on the catalytic activity of subnanometric PtOx clusters over CeO2 nanowires in low-temperature CO oxidation as a probe reaction. Atoms and subnanometric clusters of Pt were deposited to form the coordination structure of PtOx on the well-defined CeO2 nanowires with mainly exposed (110) facets. The reactivity of active sites and the variation of the local coordination structures of the PtOx sites were deeply investigated with in situ spectroscopic experiments, assisted by density functional theory simulations. According to our observation, although the highly dispersed Pt sites at the subnanometric scale could provide increased accessible sites, some of the Pt sites did not show high activity for CO oxidation due to the increased surrounding oxygen that seemed to overstabilize the Pt atoms. An increased proportion of both adsorbed CO intermediates on oxidized Pt sites and the interfacial lattice oxygen of PtOx clusters tended to become inactive on samples with a high coordination number of oxygen bonded to Pt sites (CN(Pt-O)), leading to the loss of effective active sites and a decrease in the catalytic activity. A relatively small CN(Pt-O) value in the subnanometric PtOx/CeO2 NWs, which was found to be the appropriate structure for their catalytic performance, remarkably increased the activity by about 1/2 order of magnitude. We believe our investigation on the interfacial coordination structure effects of subnanometric PtOx clusters dispersed on CeO2 nanowires can provide some new basic chemical insights into the metal-support interfacial interactions of Pt/CeO2 catalysts for understanding their catalytic performance in some relevant reactions.
Synchrotron Radiation in Situ X-ray Absorption Fine Structure and in Situ X-ray Diffraction Analysis of a High-Performance Cobalt Catalyst Towards the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Transition metal-based composites are one of the most important electrocatalysts because of their rich redox chemistry. The reaction kinetics of a redox couple is dependent on the chemical valence and is a key issue in electrocatalytic performance. In this study, a metallic Co catalyst was synthesized by pyrolyzing Co(OH)(2). The effect of the chemical valence of Co on the oxygen reduction reaction ( ORR) was investigated by comparing the electrocatalytic properties of three Co-based catalysts containing Co-0, Co2+, and Co3+. The electrocatalytic properties were evaluated mainly by linear scan voltammetry (LSV) and a direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC) where the Co-based catalysts were used as cathodes. The LSV results show that the ORR peak current density increases with a decrease in chemical valence. The DBFC with the Co-0 cathode exhibits highest power density and good durability. In situ X-ray diffraction combined with in situ X-ray absorption fine structure tests was carried out to reveal the dynamic microstructure evolution of the Co-0 cathode during ORR. The in situ results clearly demonstrate the evolution of metallic Co to Co(OH) (2) and then to CoOOH during the ORR.
Interfacial sites in platinum-hydroxide-cobalt hybrid nanostructures for promoting CO oxidation activity

Abstract:Metal-oxide/hydroxide hybrid nanostructures provide an excellent platform to study the interfacial effects on tailoring the catalysis of metal catalysts. Herein, a hybrid nanostructure of Pt@Co(OH)(2) supported on SiO2 was synthesized by incipient wetness impregnation of Co(OH)(2) with the aid of H2O2 and successive urea-assisted deposition-precipitation of platinum nanoparticles. The Fenton-like reaction between Co-2(+) and H2O2 during the impregnation process facilitates the formation of active interfacial sites. This hybrid nanostructure exhibits much higher catalytic activity towards CO oxidation than Pt/SiO2 nanoparticles with a similar Pt loading and particle size. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy was used to track the CO adsorption processes and to identify the reaction intermediates during CO oxidation. It shows that the OH species at the Pt-OH-Co interfacial sites could readily react with CO adsorbed on neighboring Pt to yield CO2 by forming *COOH intermediates and oxygen vacancies. Under the CO + O-2 oxidation conditions, O-2 molecules are activated by the oxygen vacancy and react with the CO molecules adsorbed on Pt to generate CO2, via forming the highly active *OOH intermediates as observed by DRIFTS.

Abstract:A nanostructural catalyst with long-term durability under harsh conditions is very important for an outstanding catalytic performance. Herein, a new ultrastable PtCo/Co3O4-SiO2 nanocatalyst was explored to improve the catalytic performance of carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation by virtue of the surface active lattice oxygen derived from strong metal-support interactions. Such a structure can overcome the issues of Co3O4-SiO2 inactivation by water vapor and the Pt inferior activity at low temperature. Further, Co3O4-SiO2 nanosheets endow superior structure stability under high temperatures of up to 800 °C, which gives long-term catalytic cyclability of PtCo/Co3O4-SiO2 nanocomposites for CO oxidation. Moreover, the large specific surface areas (294 m2 g-1) of the nanosheet structure can expose abundant surface active lattice oxygen, which significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of CO oxidation at 50 °C over 30 days without apparent aggregation of PtCo nanoparticles after 20 cycles from 50 to 400 °C. It can be expected to be a promising candidate as an ultrastable efficient catalyst.

Abstract:A molecular-level understanding of how the electronic structure of metal center tunes the catalytic behaviors remains a grand challenge in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we report an unconventional kinetics strategy for bridging the microscopic metal electronic structure and the macroscopic steady-state rate for CO oxidation over Pt catalysts. X-ray absorption and photoelectron spectroscopy as well as electron paramagnetic resonance investigations unambiguously reveal the tunable Pt electronic structures with well-designed carbon support surface chemistry. Diminishing the electron density of Pt consolidates the CO-assisted O 2 dissociation pathway via the O*-O-C*-O intermediate directly observed by isotopic labeling studies and rationalized by density-functional theory calculations. A combined steady-state isotopic transient kinetic and in situ electronic analyses identifies Pt charge as the kinetics indicators by being closely related to the frequency factor, site coverage, and activation energy. Further incorporation of catalyst structural parameters yields a novel model for quantifying the electronic effects and predicting the catalytic performance. These could serve as a benchmark of catalyst design by a comprehensive kinetics study at the molecular level.

Abstract:Identifying the active sites of catalysts under working conditions is crucial for precise understanding of reaction mechanisms and rational design of catalysts. However, the nature of active sites of bimetallic catalysts for CO oxidation is still a subject of debate. Herein, we employ in situ X-ray absorption and infrared spectroscopy to monitor the realistic structures of active centers in a bimetallic Pt-Co/Al2O3 catalyst during CO oxidation. This catalyst brings 100% CO conversion at room temperature and 30-fold higher turnover frequency than monometallic Pt/Al2O3 catalysts. The in situ studies reveal that under the CO oxidation condition, a fraction of Co atoms are segregated from the PtCo alloy into the surface CoO species that decorates the remaining PtCo nanoparticles through direct Pt-O-Co interfacial bonds. The bond-valence analysis unravels one dangling Co-O coordination per Co2+ in the surface CoO, which acts as the active sites for O-2 activation. The synergy between the CoO species and the PtCo alloy brings the superior catalytic activity. We also show that the directly connected Pt-O-Co interface is more beneficial to the catalytic performance than the unconnected Pt-CoO interface and provides a promising strategy toward the design of advanced catalysts for the redox reaction.

Abstract:The functionality of heterogeneous catalysts is influenced by a delicate interplay of multiple parameters, including morphology and structure, chemical potential gradients and related dynamics. Here, we report on how these factors are interconnected. Combining time-resolved transmission electron microscopy imaging and selected area electron diffraction with online conversion detection, CO oxidation over Pt nanoparticles was studied at a pressure of 700 mbar and temperatures up to 500 °C. The different interactions between reactants and catalysts over the entire range of catalytic conversion were investigated. Chemical dynamics in this reaction were found to consist of both morphological transformations and fluctuating structural dynamics. Morphological transformations were observed mostly in low activity regimes, leading to nanoparticles with increased stable surface facets. Meanwhile structural changes were observed during high activity regimes where the partial pressures remained constant. Furthermore, the observed changes were found to occur in both the bulk and the surface of the catalyst. Catalytic cycling revealed that morphological transformations and structural dynamics have different implications on the reactivity and are mostly irreversible.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of core-shell platinum alloy nanoparticles is typically superior to that of pure platinum nanoparticles for the oxygen reduction reaction in fuel cell cathodes. Thorough understanding of core-shell formation is critical for atomic-scale design and control of the platinum shell, which is known to be the structural feature responsible for the enhancement. Here we reveal details of a counter-intuitive core-shell formation process in platinum-cobalt nanoparticles at elevated temperature under oxygen at atmospheric pressure, by using advanced in situ electron microscopy. Initial segregation of a thin platinum, rather than cobalt oxide, surface layer occurs concurrently with ordering of the intermetallic core, followed by the layer-by-layer growth of a platinum shell via Ostwald ripening during the oxygen annealing treatment. Calculations based on density functional theory demonstrate that this process follows an energetically favourable path. These findings are expected to be useful for the future design of structured platinum alloy nanocatalysts.Core-shell platinum alloy nanoparticles are promising catalysts for oxygen reduction, however a deeper understanding of core-shell formation is still required. Here the authors report oxygen-driven formation of core-shell Pt3Co nanoparticles, seen at the atomic scale with in situ electron microscopy at ambient pressure.
Getting Insights into the Temperature-Specific Active Sites on Platinum Nanoparticles for CO Oxidation: A Combined in Situ Spectroscopic and Ab Initio Density Functional Theory Study

Abstract:The geometrical structure of metal nanoparticles has been found to be a critical factor that can influence the catalytic behavior significantly. For typical metal nanoparticles, the exposed surface atoms usually exhibit different coordination environments among different surface sites. By in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, kinetic measurements, and DFT calculations, it has been found that, for Pt-catalyzed CO oxidation at different temperatures, CO reacts preferentially on different surface sites of Pt nanoparticles. At low temperatures, Pt species with higher coordination numbers (≥7-fold coordinated) present higher catalytic activities due to the lower CO adsorption energy. However, at high temperatures, especially beyond the ignition temperature, Pt species with lower coordination numbers (≤6-fold coordinated) play a predominant role because of their better capability for O2 activation.

Abstract:Identification of structures of active sites of catalysts under realistic conditions is key for understanding the structure–reactivity relationship and mechanism of catalytic reactions. Various in situ techniques and novel theoretical concepts (e.g. ab initio atomistic thermodynamics) have been developed. As an example, oxidation of stepped Pt(110) and Pt(332) surfaces has been studied using density functional theory, scanning tunneling microscopy and high resolution x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. It was found that ridge Pt atoms are highly reactive and one-dimensional (1D) oxide stripes form along the Pt ridge. Within the 1D oxide stripes, the reactivity is low, and reaction occurs only at the defect sites and/or boundaries of 1D PtO2 stripes. Furthermore, for stepped Pt(332) surfaces, a site highly active in promoting carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation was identified due to the formation of novel transition states at the boundary of the 1D oxide and chemisorption domains. Since the ratio of the ridge atoms increases with decrease of the particle sizes, the present study highlights the importance of the 1D oxide components for the reactivity of supported nanosize catalysts.

Abstract:The carbon monoxide (CO) interaction effect on active Pt-based catalysts is critical because the surface reconstruction and phase separation behavior of bimetallic catalysts in a CO environment can profoundly impact the catalysts' activity and durability. However, because direct and dynamic observation has proven elusive, the exact failure mechanisms of the nanocrystal structural modifications induced by CO are poorly understood. In this work, we probe the dynamic structural and compositional transformations of an individual nanoplates in a CO gas atmosphere via in-situ environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM) and confirmed with theoretical calculations. The interaction of Pt and Pb atoms with CO molecules are revealed dynamically, including the resulting breakdown of the nanoplates. The Pt atoms aggregate on surface facets of the original PtPb lattice and the Pt-CO complex mobilizes, cracking the Pt surface layers and stripping Pb atoms from the PtPb alloy core to form Pb(CO)4. These interactions provide direct clues for the failure analysis of the catalyst and, thus, represent a critical step towards the design of an anti-CO interaction catalyst.

Structural changes in noble metal nanoparticles during CO oxidation and their impact on catalyst activity

Abstract:Abstract The dynamical structure of a catalyst determines the availability of active sites on its surface. However, how nanoparticle (NP) catalysts re-structure under reaction conditions and how these changes associate with catalytic activity remains poorly understood. Using operando transmission electron microscopy, we show that Pd NPs exhibit reversible structural and activity changes during heating and cooling in mixed gas environments containing O 2 and CO. Below 400 °C, the NPs form flat low index facets and are inactive towards CO oxidation. Above 400 °C, the NPs become rounder, and conversion of CO to CO 2 increases significantly. This behavior reverses when the temperature is later reduced. Pt and Rh NPs under similar conditions do not exhibit such reversible transformations. We propose that adsorbed CO molecules suppress the activity of Pd NPs at lower temperatures by stabilizing low index facets and reducing the number of active sites. This hypothesis is supported by thermodynamic calculations.

Abstract:The morphology of nanoparticles (NPs) is crucial for determining their catalytic performance. The dramatic changes in the morphology of metal NPs during reactions observed in many in situ experiments pose great challenges for the identification of the geometry for optimal catalytic activities, which arouses the controversial understanding of the reaction mechanism. In this work, taking CO oxidation as a model reaction, we coupled a multiscale structure reconstruction model with kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to study the catalytic performance of the Pt NPs with changing morphology and reaction conditions. Through the quantitative analysis of contour plots for turnover frequencies, we show that the NPs with more well-coordinated sites exhibit optimal activity under CO-rich conditions at higher temperatures, while the reactivity of NPs with more low-coordination sites is optimal under O2-rich conditions at lower temperatures. Further analysis indicates that the competitive adsorption of CO and O2 plays the key role, in which the structure with optimal activity has a closer CO and O coverage. This work not only reconciles the controversy of the active geometry in the experiments, but offers an efficient method to guide the rational design of high-performance catalysts.
Site‐Resolved Cu2O Catalysis in the Oxidation of CO

Abstract:The identification of the contribution of different surface sites to the catalytic activity of a catalyst nanoparticle is one of the most challenging issues in the fundamental studies of heterogeneous catalysis. We herein demonstrate an effective strategy of using a series of uniform cubic Cu2O nanocrystals with different sizes to identify the intrinsic activity and contributions of face and edge sites in the catalysis of CO oxidation by a combination of reaction kinetics analysis and DFT calculations. Cu2O nanocrystals undergo insitu surface oxidation forming CuO thin films during CO oxidation. As the average size of the cubic Cu2O nanocrystals decreases from 1029nm to 34nm, the dominant active sites contributing to the catalytic activity switch from face sites to edge sites. These results reveal the interplay between the intrinsic catalytic activity and the density of individual types of surface sites on a catalyst nanoparticle in determining their contributions to the catalytic activity.

Abstract:Nanoparticle (NP) catalysts are ubiquitous in energy systems, chemical production, and reducing the environmental impact of many industrial processes. Under reactive environments, the availability of catalytically active sites on the NP surface is determined by its dynamic structure. However, atomic-scale insights into how a NP surface reconstructs under reaction conditions and the impact of the reconstruction on catalytic activity are still lacking. Using operando transmission electron microscopy, we show that Pd NPs exhibit periodic round–to–flat transitions altering their facets during CO oxidation reaction at atmospheric pressure and elevated temperatures. This restructuring causes spontaneous oscillations in the conversion of CO to CO 2 under constant reaction conditions. Our study reveals that the oscillatory behavior stems from the CO-adsorption-mediated periodic restructuring of the nanocatalysts between high-index-faceted round and low-index-faceted flat shapes. These atomic-scale insights into the dynamic surface properties of NPs under reactive conditions play an important role in the design of high-performance catalysts.

Abstract:Due to their exceptional catalytic properties for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and other crucial electrochemical reactions, PtCo intermetallic nanoparticle (NP) and single atomic (SA) Pt metal site catalysts have received considerable attention. However, their formation mechanisms at the atomic level during high-temperature annealing processes remain elusive. Here, the thermally driven structure evolution of Pt–Co binary catalyst systems is investigated using advanced in situ electron microscopy, including PtCo intermetallic alloys and single Pt/Co metal sites. The pre-doping of CoN4 sites in carbon supports and the initial Pt NP sizes play essential roles in forming either Pt3Co intermetallics or single Pt/Co metal sites. Importantly, the initial Pt NP loadings against the carbon support are critical to whether alloying to L12-ordered Pt3Co NPs or atomizing to SA Pt sites at high temperatures. High Pt NP loadings (e.g., 20%) tend to lead to the formation of highly ordered Pt3Co intermetallic NPs with excellent activity and enhanced stability toward the ORR. In contrast, at a relatively low Pt loading (<6 wt%), the formation of single Pt sites in the form of PtC3N is thermodynamically favorable, in which a synergy between the PtC3N and the CoN4 sites could enhance the catalytic activity for the ORR, but showing insufficient stability.

Abstract:A low-concentration cobalt (similar to 6 at%) and manganese (similar to 3 at%) bimetallic oxide catalyst supported on ceria nanorods (CoMnOx/CeO2), as well as its related single metal oxide counterparts (CoOx/CeO2 and MnOx/CeO2) was synthesized via a deposition-precipitation approach. The fresh samples after air-calcination at 400 C-omicron were tested under the reaction conditions of CO oxidation, and showed the following order of reactivity: CoMnOx/CeO2 > CoOx/CeO2 > MnOx/CeO2. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) data identified that the structure of the CeO2 support was maintained during deposition of metal (Co, Mn) ions while the corresponding vis-Raman spectra verified that more oxygen vacancies were created after deposition-precipitation than those in pure ceria nanorods. Aberration-corrected, high-angle, annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) images with the help of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) analyses determined two types of cobalt species, i.e. ultra-fine clusters (< 2 nm) and smaller nanocrystals (up to 5 nm) in CoOx/CeO2 while only bigger nanostructures (similar to 10 nm) of cobalt-manganese oxides in CoMnOx/CeO2. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements demonstrated the presence of a cubic Co3O4 phase in all the cobalt-based catalysts. The fitting results of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) indicated that the introduction of the secondary metal (Mn) oxide significantly enhanced the two-dimensional growth of cobalt oxide nanostructures on the surface of CeO2. Therefore, the enhanced activity of CO oxidation reaction over the bimetallic cobalt-manganese oxide nanocatalyst can be attributed to the higher crystallinity of the Co3O4 phase in this work.
Operando Insights into CO Oxidation on Cobalt Oxide Catalysts by NAP-XPS, FTIR, and XRD

Abstract:Cobalt oxide Co3O4 has recently emerged as promising, noble metal-free catalyst for oxidation reactions but a better understanding of the active catalyst under working conditions is required for further development and potential commercialization. An operando approach has been applied, combining near ambient (atmospheric) pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), or X-ray diffraction (XRD) with simultaneous catalytic tests of CO oxidation on Co3O4, enabling one to monitor surface and bulk states under various reaction conditions (steady-state and dynamic conditions switching between CO and O2). On the basis of the surface-specific chemical information a complex network of different reaction pathways unfolded: Mars-van-Krevelen (MvK), CO dissociation followed by carbon oxidation, and formation of carbonates. A possible Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) pathway cannot be excluded because of the good activity when no oxygen vacancies were detected. The combined NAP-XPS/FTIR results are in line with a MvK mechanism above 100 °C, involving the Co3+/Co2+ redox couple and oxygen vacancy formation. Under steady state, the Co3O4 surface appeared oxidized and the amount of reduced Co2+ species at/near the surface remained low up to 200 °C. Only in pure CO, about 15% of surface reduction were detected, suggesting that the active sites are a minority species. The operando spectroscopic studies also revealed additional reaction pathways: CO dissociation followed by carbon reoxidation and carbonate formation and its decomposition. However, due to their thermal stability in various atmospheres, the carbonates are rather spectators and also CO dissociation seems a minor route. This study thus highlights the benefits of combining operando surface sensitive techniques to gain insight into catalytically active surfaces.

Abstract:As a prerequisite elementary step, the reduction of cobalt (Co) oxides to form metallic Co is essential to display activity in heterogeneous catalysis. Nevertheless, the intrinsic principle of phase and morphology evolution for Co oxides and formation mechanism of the active Co site remains unclear. Here, we resolve this decades-long question by using a state-of-the-art in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to elucidate the multi-role of initial crystalline phase and size of Co oxide in modulation of reduction rate, phase and morphology evolution under H 2 atmosphere, by excluding the possible interference from promoter and support. We anticipate that this study enriches current understanding on the surface structure and morphology evolution of Co oxides, and provide reference for rational design of Co-based catalytic material as well as its pretreatment protocol.

Abstract:Bimetallic and multi-component catalysts typically exhibit composition-dependent activity and selectivity, and when optimized often outperform single-component catalysts. Here we used ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) and in situ and ex situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to elucidate the origin of composition dependence observed in the catalytic activities of monodisperse CoPd bimetallic nanocatalysts for CO oxidation. We found that the catalysis process induced a reconstruction of the catalysts, leaving CoOx on the nanoparticle surface. The synergy between Pd and CoOx coexisting on the surface promotes the catalytic activity of the bimetallic catalysts. This synergistic effect can be optimized by tuning the Co/Pd ratios in the nanoparticle synthesis, and it reaches a maximum at compositions near Co0.24Pd0.76, which achieves complete CO conversion at the lowest temperature. Our combined AP-XPS and TEM studies provide direct observation of the surface evolution of the bimetallic nanoparticles under catalytic conditions and show how this evolution correlates with catalytic properties.
