Abstract:Synthesis and luminescence properties of GdF3:Ce3+, Ln(3+) (Ln(3+)=Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, Sm3+) nanocrystals were investigated. The energy transfer efficiencies between Ce3+ ions and Tb3+ ions, Dy3+ ions, Eu3+ ions were relatively higher than that between Ce3+ ions and Sm3+ ions. Multicolor emissions could be obtained using 254 nm light as excitation source. Such multicolor emissions could be used as multicolor bio-label.

Abstract:A new series of oxynitride glasses and glass ceramics were prepared by melt and heat treatment methods.The formation of CaAl2Si2O8,Ca2Al2SiO7 and Y20Si12O48N4crystals were precipitated in the glass ceramics,confirmed by XRD measurements.The luminescence spectra showed that an increasing amount of Eu3+could be reduced into Eu2+with the increase of Si3N4 content or by the subsequent annealing.Such Eu3+to Eu2+reduction was deduced either from 6Eu3++2N3-→6Eu2++N2↑ or from Eu3+substituting Ca2+.Besides emitting red-orange luminescence of Eu3+:f-f transitions like the precursor glasses,the glass ceramics also presented new blue-green super-broad emission band corresponding to Eu2+:d-f transitions.By combining blue-green and red-orange emissions,the oxynitride glass ceramics showed white color luminescence with improved luminescence intensity and color rendering index,thus demonstrating a highly potential LED illumination application prospect.

Abstract:Eu2+ doped and Eu2+, Ce3+ co-doped LiSi2N3 phosphors were successfully prepared by gas-pressed sintering in this study. The dominant excitation band of LiSi2N3:Eu2+ was found at about 355 nm and exhibited a broad-band yellow emission centered at 592 nm instead of the early reports of 310 nm and 580 nm, respectively. The shifting behavior dominantly contributed to different oxygen content in the host. The second luminescent center formed by the introduction of oxygen into nitride phosphors was discussed in detail. The detailed energy transfer mechanism from Ce3+ to Eu2+ in the LiSi2N3 host is also reported and a notable unusual redshift behavior was observed in Eu2+, Ce3+ co-doped LiSi2N3 phosphors.

Abstract:Europium-doped LaF3 nanoparticles have been prepared by the ionic reaction in the ethanol at 60°C. From the XRD pattern of nanoparticles and the emission spectra of Eu3+ ions, it has been concluded that the Eu3+ ions could easily substitute the La3+ sites and the solid solution La1−xEuxF3 can be synthesized. Due to very low phonon energies of LaF3 matrix, the 5D1 emission of Eu3+ ions in La1−xEuxF3 nanoparticles can be observed at room temperature when doping concentration of Eu3+ ions is lower than 30mol%. The quenching process of 5D1 emission can be attributed to cross-relaxation. Since clusters of Eu3+ ions and resonance energy transfer only occurs within one particle due to the hindrance by the particle boundary, the concentration quenching resulted from resonance energy transfer between neighboring Eu3+ ions occurs at higher Eu3+ concentrations in the Eu3+ doped LaF3 nanoparticles.

Abstract:Nanorod-like Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 (OH): xEu 3+ , yTb 3+ (x + y = 12 mol%) phosphors with multicolor tunable emission were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The structure, morphology and luminescent properties of samples were studied by XRD, EDS, FT-IR, SEM, TEM and PL. The luminescent results demonstrate the existence of energy transfer between Tb 3+ and Eu 3+ in the Tb 3+ , Eu 3+ co-doped sample, and the energy transfer mechanism from Tb 3+ to Eu 3+ in the phosphors were studied. When appropriately modulating the Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ doping concentration, various emission colors can be obtained and tuned from yellow-green, yellow, and orange to red through single excitation energy.

Abstract:The novel phosphor of LaAlGe2O7 activated with the trivalent rare-earth Ln3+ (Ln=Eu, Sm, Dy) ions were synthesized by solid-state method, and their characterization and luminescent properties were investigated. The absorption, emission and excitation spectra, and decay curves were employed to study the luminescence properties. The calcined powders of the Eu3+, Sm3+ and Dy3+ ions doped in the LaAlGe2O7 emit bright red, reddish orange and yellowish white light, respectively. In the photoluminescence investigations, there is a single and highly symmetric site for activator ions in the LaAlGe2O7 host lattice. The sharp emission properties show that the LaAlGe2O7 is a suitable host for rare-earth doped laser crystal and phosphor material.

Abstract:The rare earth Eu3+-activated yttria–ceria Y2Ce2O7 phosphor nanopowders were prepared by a rapid solution combustion reaction and subsequent sintering process. All the Eu3+-doped samples have cubic fluorite phase and exhibit predominant 5D0–7F2 transition emission when excited at 467nm, which are quite similar with that of Eu3+-doped CeO2. The average grain sizes of the composite are around 40nm, and almost all the particles are seriously melt together without the addition of surfactant. However, with the addition of certain amount of surfactant polyethylene glycol (PEG) in the combustion reaction, the well-dispersed particles with round shapes are obtained and the relative emission intensity of the samples is greatly enhanced. Under the same Eu doping concentration (0.15) and excitation wavelength (467nm), the relative emission intensity of the composite without the addition of PEG is almost 4-fold of Eu3+-doped CeO2. Assisted with PEG, the relative emission intensity of Eu3+-doped Y2Ce2O7 is further enhanced and reaches more than 6.5-fold as compared with Eu3+-doped CeO2. The improved particle morphology and enhanced emission intensity for Eu3+-activated Y2Ce2O7 phosphor nanopowders are quite beneficial for their applications in solid state lighting fields.
Controllable Eu2+-Doped Orthophosphate Blue-/Red-Emitting Phosphors: Charge Compensation and Lattice-Strain Control

Abstract:Cation-substitution-induced controllable luminescence tuning could efficiently optimize and improve the luminescence performances of novel phosphor materials for realizing high-quality lighting. As important members of the orthophosphate family, ABPO4 (A = alkali metal Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs; B = alkali earth metal Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) offers an abundant cation lattice environment for rare earth ions. Herein, we successfully prepared a broad-band red-emitting CsMgPO4:Eu2+ phosphor with an emission peak at 628 nm (fwhm = 118 nm). A series of cation-substitution strategies are designed to adjust and enhance its luminescence performances. The corresponding mechanisms are also investigated and proposed reasonably. A charge-compensation strategy of [Eu2+-Si4+] → [Cs+-P5+] could dramatically enhance the quenching concentration from 0.04 to 0.30, which is attributed to the decrease of Eu3+. Two cation-substitution strategies of larger Ba2+ (Sr2+) ions for Mg2+ ions could achieve superior emission adjustment of Eu2+ ions from the red to blue (yellow) region due to local lattice distortion. Interestingly, a consecutive emission adjustment from the red to blue region by simply changing the annealed temperature is reported for the first time, and the possible emission tuning mechanism is revealed based on a local lattice-strain control. This study could serve as a guide in developing Eu2+-activated ABPO4 phosphors with improving luminescence performance and controllable luminescence adjustment based on charge compensation and lattice-strain control through various cation substitutions.

Abstract:The luminescent properties of phosphors are determined by the electronic configuration of their activators and the crystal environment in which they are embedded. By manipulating the site-selective occupancy of activators, we can coordinately control the local crystal field and electron cloud distribution to master the movement of emission wavelength and obtain a color-tunable phosphor. The system of β-Ca3(PO4)2 is an excellent carrier for crystal-site engineering to modify luminescent performance. It has five distinct crystal sites and a strong photoluminescence response. However, due to low doping concentration and structural complexity, the specific occupation of Ce remains unknown. We discussed the specific position of Ce in this study and proposed a novel activators lattice migration strategy for controlling the relative strength of crystal field splitting (CFS) and the nephelauxetic effect (NE) to control luminescence properties. By combining X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) with DFT calculation, we predicted the local environment of each crystal lattice and migrated Ce3+ from M(3) to a strengthened crystal field site with a lower coordination number, shorter bonding bond length, and greater polyhedral distortion, M(5), resulting in phosphors with tunable luminescence emission. Relevant parameters Δ D ( C e 3 + ) were identified for dealing with interference caused by the electronegativity difference during a structural modification. Some potential applications emerged as a supplement and an intriguing QR-code and response program for epidemic prevention were demonstrated. This structure–activity relationship-based strategy provides new inspiration for designing luminescent materials with tunable emission and a broader range of applications.

Abstract:The cerium lanthanum composite 2CeO(2)-0.5La(2)O(3) and rare earth Eu3+-doped composite phosphor powders were synthesized by a facile solution combustion reaction. X-ray diffraction patterns suggested Ce2LaO5.5 with a cubic fluorite structure which was the same as pure CeO2 except for the lattice parameter a. After the activator Eu3+ was doped to the composite, Eu3+ could locate at either La3+ or Ce4+ sites due to their close ionic radius. It was found that the lattice parameter a gradually decreased with increasing Eu concentration as Eu3+ occupied the La3+ site. However, the lattice parameter a obviously increased with increasing Eu concentration if Eu3+ occupied the Ce4+ site. All of the phosphor powders showed red-light emission from the dominant D-5(0) -> F-7(2) characteristic transition of Eu3+ under excitation with 466 nm blue light. In particular, the system displayed remarkably enhanced luminescence as Eu3+ occupied the Ce4+ site rather than the La3+ site. The reason for this should be ascribed to the change in the amount of O vacancies in the host, which was confirmed from their Raman spectra. The results might be beneficial for the system potentially used in solid state lighting as well as other optoelectronic fields.

Abstract:A series of BaLaAl3O7:xEu3+ nanophosphors have been prepared by the high‐temperature solid state reaction method. The XRD and SEM characterization results present that there exists a slight influence on the crystal structure and the average particle size of the nanophosphors while the Eu3+ ions are doped into the matrix. The intense and narrow red photoluminescence spectra have been measured under the ultraviolet excitation and there are two optimal Eu3+ concentrations of 0.8 and 12 mol%, respectively, and the intensity of the former is stronger than that of the latter. Furthermore, the mechanoluminescence phenomena with the same color are also observed when the samples are scratched with a pen. The calculated results based on the measurements of thermoluminescence spectra reveal that the total initial concentration of trapped carriers of BaLaAl3O7:12Eu3+ nanophosphors is larger than that of BaLaAl3O7:0.8Eu3+ sample, which causes the change trend of ML intensity to be opposite to that of PL intensity even though both have the same Eu3+ doping concentrations.

Abstract:Developing a feasible scheme for solid-state lighting with high-quality white light remains a significant challenge. Particularly, tunable luminescence with single-component white emission have been widely studied to improve the luminescence performance of phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs) phosphors. In this work, a novel spontaneous reduction phenomenon was first found in Eu-activated apatite-type Ba5(PO4)3Cl phosphors prepared by a solid-phase reaction in air. Under 362 nm excitation, the luminescence results showed that a broad blue Eu2+ emission band with a peak at 437 nm appears unexpectedly in addition to the usual sharp orange-red emission of Eu3+. The mixed-valence fact of Eu2+/Eu3+ was further confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectra and time-resolved spectroscopy techniques. The underlying mechanism could be explained by a charge compensation model. Accordingly, the local crystal-site engineering control of the luminescence in Ba5-y Ca y (PO4)3Cl:Eu2+/Eu3+ had been studied in detail by the introduction of Ca2+. It is found that the Ca2+ substitution of Ba2+ will lead to new splitting peaks of Eu3+ emission and a red-shift followed by a blue-shift of Eu2+ emission respectively, which could eventually adjust the luminescence of phosphors to the proper white light region. These phenomena are mainly ascribed to the introduction of Ca2+ to the structure modification of activator coordination environment. Finally, based on the thermal quenching results indicate that the potential application of the single-doped mixed-valence phosphor system in pc-WLEDs.

Abstract:Green-emitting, apatite structure of Ca4-yLa6(AlO4) x (SiO4)6-x O1-x/2: yEu2+ was synthesized by using the high-temperature solid-state method under reducing atmosphere (90%N2–10%H2). Corresponding to the Eu2+ of 4f65 d1→4f7 transition at the excitation wavelength of 335 nm, a broadband emission of 450–700 nm showed. Eu2+ lattice selection in Ca4-yLa6(AlO4) x (SiO4)6-x O1-x/2: yEu2+ phosphor were discussed conjunction with apatite crystal structure characteristics. The design of (AlO4)5-/(SiO4)4- various ratios and Eu2+ doping concentration improved the Eu2+ luminous intensity and the red-shift of optical emission spectra. Energy transfer between the two luminescent centers of Eu(I) and Eu (II) happened, and clearly distinguished by photoluminescence decay curves monitored at 480 nm and 560 nm with the average-lifetime (τ) of Eu(I) are 240.5 ns, Eu (II) are 405.3 ns, respectively. The temperature-dependent emissions along with blue-shift phenomenon were addressed through the transition process of energy level. Eu(I) and Eu(II) lattice sites.

Abstract:The Dy3+/Eu3+ doped CaBi2Ta2O9 phosphors had been obtained via the sintering processes at 1200 degrees C for 3 h. The phase and luminescence performance of the prepared phosphors had been researched. The X-ray diffraction results indicate the pure orthorhombic phase of the prepared phosphors. When the phosphors are excited at 355 nm, the Dy3+/Eu3+ single doped CaBi2Ta2O9 phosphors exhibit the characteristic emission bands corresponding to Dy3+ and Eu3+, and the Dy3+/Eu3+ codoped CaBi2Ta2O9 phosphors exhibit tunable luminescence on account of the Dy3+ -> Eu3+ energy transfers. In this process, the dipole-dipole interaction is dominated.

Abstract:The efficient new red emitting scheelite-type compounds,Eu 3+ -doped(5 mol.%) Y(Zr 0.5 W 0.5 )O 4 ,Lu(Zr 0.5 W 0.5 )O 4 and Y(Y 1/3 W 2/3 )O 4 ,were successfully prepared.The crystal structure,photoluminescence and decay properties of the obtained phosphors were investigated.Shifts of the peaks in the XRD patterns were observed when Y 3+ sites in the host were occupied by Lu 3+ or Zr/W sites were occupied by Y/W.As a result of the crystallographic occupancy of Eu 3+ located at the cation positions without inversion symmetry,under O→Zr/W and O→Eu 3+ ligand-to-metal charge-transfer states(LMCT) excitation at 300 nm,the emission spectra of these compounds presented 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 transition for Eu 3+ at 612 nm.The diagram of Eu 3+ energy levels in these new scheelite-type compounds and the energy transfer processes were discussed.

Abstract:Ca3Zn3Te2O12:Bi3+, Ca3Zn3Te2O12:Eu3+, Ca3Zn3Te2O12:Eu3+/Bi3+ are prepared successfully in air. The crystal phase, microscopic image, and optical properties of samples are investigated by the X-ray difractometer, scanning electron microscopy, and edinburgh steady-state FLS 980 spectrograph. The green emission of Ca3Zn3Te2O12:Bi3+ phosphor with excitation at 314 nm is observed and its broad emission spectrum in the range of 360 - 790 nm is attributed to the 3 P 1 → 1 S 0 transition of Bi3+ ion. Under excitation at 395 nm, the red emission of Ca3Zn3Te2O12:Eu3+ is found, the chromaticity coordinates are (0.6392, 0.3605), and its PL spectrum is in the rang of 575 - 750 nm because of the 5 D 0 → 7 F 0, 7 F 1, 7 F 2, 7 F 3, and 7 F 4 transations of Eu3+ ion. The doping Bi3+ ion can affect the luminescence properties of Ca3Zn3Te2O12:Eu3+ phosphor. The adjustable color light from green to yellow of Ca3Zn3Te2O12:Eu3+, Bi3+ phosphor with excitation at 314 nm is revealed when Eu3+ concentration is changed from 0 to 12 mol%. When the excitation wavelength is 395 nm, Ca3Zn3Te2O12:Eu3+, Bi3+ phosphor only emits red light with emission spectrum in the rang of 575 - 750 nm. The energy level diagrams of Eu3+ and Bi3+ in Ca3Zn3Te2O12:Eu3+, Bi3+ are drawn, which is used to analyze the luminous mechanism of samples.

Abstract:The olivine-based gallate CaYGaO4 (CYG) with unique cationic ordering, rich lattice sites, and self-photoluminescence (PL) is suitable for application as a host of phosphor. However, research in this area is still in its early stages, especially in high-quality full-spectrum white lighting. Herein, novel CYG: Bi3+/Eu3+ with a controllable PL property is designed based on energy transfer and superposition of emissions from blue self-PL, blue PL of Bi3+, and red-PL of Eu3+. Intriguingly, PL intensity and quantum efficiency could be enhanced via codoping Li+/Zn2+ separately/simultaneously because of their two intentional functions as both charge balancer and flux. Unlike self- and Eu3+ PL, Bi3+ PL is quite sensitive to the lattice environment owing to its exposed 6s2 electronic configuration and is tuned via codoping Sr2+ to regulate the nephelauxetic effect and crystal field splitting concurrently around Bi3+. Meanwhile, for further regulating the PL of Bi3+ and obtaining "warm" white light, La3+ is codoped into the phosphor via crystallographic site engineering to control the substitution trends of Bi3+ at distinct lattice sites. Finally, as a proof-of-concept, a full-spectrum phosphor-converted white-light-emitting diode device under nUV pumping with remarkable color rendering index (Ra), high luminous efficiency, and chemical/thermal stability is achieved by utilizing the individual CYG:Bi/Eu/Li/Zn/Sr/La phosphor via a remote "capping" packaging method.
Structural Modification and Photoluminescence Studies of Eu in Lamellar Fluorphlogopite by the Adjustment of Layer Charge

Abstract:In this paper, the lamellar fluorphlogopite was structurally modified by the adjustment of layer charge and the rare earth Eu3+ was doped to fluorphlogopite with a subsequent high temperature solid state reaction process. The structural modification involved a preliminary treatment of fluorphlogopite with HNO3 and oxalic acid to reduce the layer charge density, and part of the charge-reduced fluorphlogopite was converted to a homoionic Na form by ion exchange with NaCl or NaB(C6H5)(4). It has been noticed that the interlayer spacing of modified fluorphlogopite is decreased as compared with the original fluorphlogopite due to the ionic radius difference between K+ and Na+. The photoluminescence study suggests that adjustment of layer charge of fluorphlogopite is beneficial to enhance the luminescence intensity excited with near UV light, and the layered system may be a potential red light component for the use of solid-state lighting and other optoelectronic fields. Controlled Synthesis and Luminescent Properties of Cubic Lu2O3:Eu3+ Nanocrystals

Abstract:Lu2O3:Eu3+ nanocrystals with various shapes,such as nanorods,nanosheets,and nanoparticles,were synthesized by a hydrothermal approach only through adjusting the pH values of the precursor solutions.The prepared Lu2O3:Eu3+ nanocrystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy,photoluminescence(PL) spectroscopy,and fluorescence lifetime(FL).With decreasing the samples sizes from nanorods to nanosheets and finally to nanoparticles,the photoluminescence intensity decreases drastically.It is attributed to the gradual increase of OH content,which attaches to the surface of nanocrystals,accelerates the nonradiative relaxation and thus lowers the luminescent efficiency.Moreover,the gradually enhanced 624 nm emission line and the continuously extended long excited tails of the charge transfer bands at the long wavelength side,which all originate from the Eu3+ ions at or near the surface,are also observed in Lu2O3:Eu3+ nanocrystals.
Photoluminescence Control of UCr4C4-Type Phosphors with Superior Luminous Efficiency and High Color Purity Via Controlling Site Selection of Eu2+ Activators

Abstract:Controlling the site selection of activators via chemical substitution to optimize and design luminescence materials is an essential part of rare-earth-activated phosphors. Herein, we report the UCr4C4-type CsKNa2-yLiy(Li3SiO4)(4):Eu2+ and CsKNa2(Li3Si1-zGezO4)4:Eu2+ phosphors, in which there are three crystallographic sites (Cs, K, and Na), and the site engineering for Eu2+ activators is utilized to tune the luminescence properties. First, Li+ ions are introduced to control the migration of Eu2+ ions from K sites to Na sites, realizing the spectral tuning from cyan narrow band [lambda(em) = 485 nm, full width at half-maximum (fwhm) = 27 nm] to green narrow band (lambda(em) = 526 nm, fwhm = 58 nm). Moreover, the variation of local lattice caused by Li+ ions improves the internal quantum yields from 39 to 82% as well as reduces the thermal quenching (90% @ 150 degrees C of integrated intensity at 20 degrees C). Second, the Ge4+ ions are introduced to control the shrinkage of the Na polyhedron for Eu2+ doping, leading to disappearance of the shoulder band in the green region. Simultaneously, the spectral blue shift should be ascribed to a synergistic effect of the reduction of crystal field splitting and Stokes shift. Thus, the blue-emitting CsKNa2(Li3GeO4)(4):Eu2+ phosphor is obtained, which has only one symmetric blue emission at 458 nm with fwhm = 26 nm. By employing a 370 nm UV chip, the as-fabricated white light-emitting diodes using CsKNaLi(Li3SiO4)(4):Eu2+ phosphor presents a superior luminous efficacy of 94.16 lm W-1, a corresponding color temperature of 5045 K, and a high color rendering index (95.8), demonstrating that the site engineering strategy based on the manipulation of chemical composition and crystal structure could be applied to tune spectral distribution and develop novel potential phosphors for practical optical application.
