Abstract:Solar vapor generation holds great potential for seawater desalination and wastewater treatment. Although various efficient solar absorbers have been developed to enhance the performance of solar vapor generators in recent years, their efficiency is still limited by unnecessary heat loss. In this article, a novel 3D hierarchical solar vapor generator (3DHG) was constructed with hydrophilic carbon felt. Different from interfacial solar vapor generators reported before, the porous and hydrophilic channels of 3DHG were exposed to the air directly, which probably resulted in a lower saturated vapor pressure of 3DHG. Therefore, this structure was beneficial for vapor escaping and led to lower average temperature of 3DHG than that of the surroundings at the same time owing to negligible convection loss and radiation loss of 3DHG. The highest evaporation rate (ER) of 1.56 kg m(-2) h(-1) and efficiency of 98.1% were obtained under 1 sun. In addition, 3DHG was also used for industry dyeing wastewater treatment and exhibited a minimum ER of 1.45 kg m(-2) h(-1) even after 7 days. This study presents a novel approach not only to design a solar vapor generator with high efficiency but also widens its potential application in seawater desalination and practical wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Carbon-based materials stand out as photothermal materials for interfacial solar evaporation due to their high solar absorptance, chemical stability, adjustable structure, ease of preparation, and low cost compared to other candidate materials. Development of multifunctional carbon-based materials that can endow the fabricated evaporators with reduced energy loss and evaporation enthalpy is highly demanded to achieve extraordinary evaporation rates. Herein, high-solar-absorptivity multi-shelled hollow porous carbon nanospheres are fabricated and incorporated with an insulating hydrogel bottom layer into an integrated solar evaporator. It achieves a fast photothermal response and a remarkably high solar evaporation rate of 2.4 kg m- 2 h- 1 under one sun. Multiphysics simulation indicates that the porous multi-shelled hollow structure enables sufficient and effective interactions between water and the hydrophilic carbon surfaces, thus producing more intermediate water (IW) and lowering the evaporation enthalpy. The solar-driven water evaporation in the evaporator is probed by in-situ low-field nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation time measurements, based on which conversion of free water (FW) into IW during solar evaporation is proposed. The molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the evolution of FW clusters into IW is facilitated on the carbon surface, thus replenishing the evaporated IW and maintaining continuous high evaporation rates. The demonstrated solar evaporator exemplifies the effectiveness of structural and thermal management in enhancing solar-driven desalination.

Abstract:Using hierarchical porous CuS‐cellulose composite as photothermal materials, a 3D opened hollow photothermal evaporator has been designed and fabricated to target high solar evaporation rates. Such a unique structure not only imparts the solar evaporator with an efficient water evaporation by minimizing energy loss, introducing cold evaporation surfaces for drawing additional energy from the bulk water and surrounding environment, but also fully activates evaporation on both inner and outer evaporation surfaces, thus delivering superior evaporation rates compared to the enclosed evaporators. Moreover, under convective flow this special structure effectively promotes the escape of vapor inside the evaporator to avoid the vapor accumulation, further enhancing the evaporation on inner evaporation surfaces, thus improving the evaporation rate up to11.911 kg·m−2·h−1 under a convective flow rate of 4.0 m·s−1 and 1.0 sun irradiation. The operability of the as‐prepared solar evaporator under natural environmental conditions was examined by outdoor evaporation tests. The obtained solar evaporator was demonstrated to be applicable for generating clean water from model seawater and dye wastewater. This work provides an impetus for promoting practical application of solar steam generation in seawater desalination and wastewater purification.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Solar vapor generation, a cost-effective way to harvest solar energy for purifying polluted or saline water, has attracted great attention in recent years. However, during the harsh environment (e.g. high-salinity brine), challenges still remain in limited water evaporation, complicated/compromised systems between water transport, evapor area and salt accumulation. Herein, graphene aerogel hollow fibers (GAHF) are developed and assembled into a solar steam generator which demonstrates exceptionally high efficiency for water evaporation and salt rejection under sun irradiation. Inspired from the capillary water transportation system in trees, the mesophase-ordered GAHFs are spun from their liquid crystalline suspension, and subsequently assembled into a roll of unidirectionally aligned bundles and then embedded in a transparent polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix. The synergistic effects between GAHFs, serving as 1D-confining micro-channels for water transport and broadband solar absorbers, and PDMS matrix, as an light refractor and “canyons”-like evaporation area, improve the water flow and absorption of solar energy and maximize the evaporation surface area. As a result, the GAHF arrays expedite remarkable transpiration, achieving continuous steam generation (∼3.29 kg m−2 h−1) and outstanding salt-rejection performance for high-salinity brine (e.g. saturated solution) desalination. This GAHF based solar steam generation system provides a facile and high-performance device for self-generating seawater desalination.

Abstract:Solar evaporation is a cost-effective way for obtaining clean water using renewable energy. However, many solar evaporation devices still show unsatisfactory performance and suffer from inefficient utilization of absorbed solar energy. Herein, numerical simulations of solar evaporation demonstrate that the heat management is a key factor governing the solar evaporation efficiency. This prediction is confirmed through using a bilayered solar steam generation architecture (HS-CB) both in lab- and pilot-scale study. The HS-CB consists of carbon black (CB) film as a solar-thermal conversion layer and a 3D hierarchical polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) skeleton crosslinking hollow glass microspheres (HSs) as a heat localization and water-transporting layer. A balance between thermal insulation and capillary-driven water transport can be reached by tuning the porosity of the thermal-insulating layer, thus inducing optimized heat localization. The proposed structure evaporates water with an efficiency of 82.1% under one sun irradiance (1 kW m-2) in lab and can even stably produce 4.63 L m-2 d-1 (average efficiency of 37%) of purified water from highly concentrated industrial waste water in pilot study, demonstrating its promising potential for application in seawater desalination and brackish water purification.

Abstract:Using solar-thermal energy to drive seawater desalination via interfacial solar steam generation is a sustainable strategy for clean water supply. Since photothermal materials and evaporators serve as key platforms for efficient light-to-heat conversion and water evaporation during solar steam generation, the rational design of the structure of photothermal materials and evaporators is important. In this work, a reduced graphene oxide and cellulose sponge-based transformable photothermal evaporator which can reversibly switch between a 2D flat and a 3D spiral structure is designed. Although the mass and volume of the materials are identical, simple structural transformation from a 2D to a 3D evaporator significantly enhances the evaporation rate due to an increase in the evaporation surface area and optimized water transportation. In addition, numerical simulations demonstrate that the 3D spiral structure is able to effectively take advantage of convective flow to fully activate and enhance evaporation on its surfaces, resulting in a much higher evaporation rate (up to 4.35 kg m-2 h-1), which is 185.9% of the evaporation rate of the 2D flat structure. Furthermore, the 3D spiral structure can be easily transformed back to the 2D flat structure for easy storage. Thus, this work presents an effective strategy to minimize the use of photothermal materials while simultaneously achieving higher evaporation rates for practical clean water production.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content">Solar steam generation offers a sustainable strategy to mitigate global clean water scarcity. To this end, 3D photothermal evaporators have attracted increasing research interest since they can significantly improve both evaporation rate and energy efficiency. However, compared to the 2D evaporators, the 3D ones consume more raw materials and occupy more storage space, which limits their applications for practical portable solar steam generation. To address this issue, a 3D hollow and compressible photothermal evaporator is designed and fabricated which can be compressed to less than one third of its original volume, thus enabling easier transport and storage. Moreover, under 1.0 sun illumination, all evaporation surfaces of this 3D evaporator are lower in temperatures than the surrounding environment, thus providing the unique advantage of zero energy loss to the environment during solar evaporation. Due to the all-cold evaporation surfaces, during solar evaporation, the evaporator is able to harvest massive energy from both the surrounding air and bulk water, delivering an extremely high evaporation rate of up to 7.6 kg m−2 h−1 under 1.0 sun irradiation. Furthermore, seawater desalination tests demonstrate that the device has great potential for portable solar thermal desalination by delivering clean water with a salinity well below 50 ppb. </section>

Abstract:Interfacial solar desalination has been widely favored as a convenient technology to relieve the prominent lack of clean water. However, it remains urgent and challenging to develop materials that can simultaneously reduce heat loss and provide effective channels for water transport without salt accumulation. In this work, we developed a free-standing Janus 3D graphene based evaporator modified by a wettability-controllable UV-O 3 treatment method. The upper hydrophilic layer of the Janus 3DG plays the role of continuous water supplement for evaporation, while the bottom hydrophobic layer could support material floating on the water surface to ensure effective light absorption and contribute to heat loss reduction. Taking advantage of the synergistic effect of the structure, Janus 3DG delivers a stable water evaporation rate of 1.71 kg m −2 h −1 under 1 kW m −2 illumination, a highly efficient conversion efficiency of 94.1 % and exhibits excellent salt-resistance in high concentration simulated seawater (10 wt%) without salt accumulation. The Janus 3DG had satisfactory availability for solar desalination and wastewater purification. Our study establishes and validates a simple method for fabricating an efficient solar-driven evaporator for desalination.

Abstract:Interfacial solar-driven steam generation is one of the most promising techniques used to produce clean water. However, achieving rapid water evaporation using solar steam generation devices is challenging because of their two-dimensional (2D) planar structures and confined evaporation areas. The three-dimensional (3D) structural design of evaporation devices improves water evaporation rates, thereby enhancing solar-driven steam generation. This study developed a 3D wood-based evaporator through 3D structure shaping and the flexible treatment of wood that involved coating photothermal materials with tannic acid. Because of the ampliative evaporation area and outstanding absorption, the water evaporation rate of the prepared 3D wood-based evaporator was as high as 2.5 kg m −2 h −1 , and the efficiency of energy transformation was up to 101 % under simulated 1-sun irradiation; the evaporation rate and efficiency of energy transformation were considerably higher than those of 2D planar wood evaporators. Furthermore, the effective seawater desalination performance and good durability of the 3D wood-based evaporator were demonstrated. This study provides different insights into the fabrication of high-efficiency wood-based solar steam generators with high prospects for application in seawater desalination.

Abstract:Delivering sufficient water to the evaporation surface/interface is one of the most widely adopted strategies to overcome salt accumulation in solar‐driven interfacial desalination. However, water transport and heat conduction loss are positively correlated, resulting in the trade‐off between thermal localization and salt resistance. Herein, a 3D hydrogel evaporator with vertical radiant vessels is prepared for the first time to surmount the long‐standing trade‐off, thereby achieving high‐rate and stable solar desalination of high‐salinity. Experiments and numerical simulations reveal that the unique hierarchical structure, which consists of a large vertical vessel channel, radiant vessels and porous vessel walls, facilitates strong self‐salt‐discharge and low longitudinal thermal conductivity. With the structure employed, a groundbreaking comprehensive performance, under one sun illumination, of evaporation rate as high as 3.53 kg m−2 h−1, salinity of 20 wt%, and a continuous 8 h evaporation is achieved, which to our knowledge is the best reported result from a salt‐free system. This work showcases the preparation method of a novel hierarchical microstructure, and also provides pivotal insights into the design of next‐generation solar evaporators of high‐efficiency and salt tolerance. Robust 3D Graphene/Cellulose Nanocrystals Hybrid Lamella Network for Stable and Highly Efficient Solar Desalination

Abstract:Solar-driven vapor generation is one of the most promising techniques for seawater desalination, which has attracted broad attention. However, a significant challenge remains for achieving a low-cost and easy-to-manufacture solar-driven steam generation device with higher evaporation efficiency, excellent mechanical performance, and good durability. Herein, we develop a simple and cost-effective method to prepare graphene/cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) lamella network (GCLN) with melamine foam (MF) as the skeleton. Thanks to the excellent light absorption properties of graphene and excellent hydrophilic properties of CNCs, GCLN exhibits an evaporation rate of 1.66 kg m-2 h-1 and an evaporation efficiency of 97.5% under 1 kW m-2 of solar radiation. In addition, GCLN can maintain its structural stability and evaporation performance during a series of harsh condition tests and durability tests. Due to the excellent processability of MF, the 3D-shape GCLN can be easily designed for an enhanced evaporation rate of 1.59 kg m-2 h-1, which is better than the theoretical limit of the evaporation rate. The novel design presented in this work offers a new avenue to develop solar steam generation devices for low-cost and large-scale seawater desalination under natural sunlight conditions, which is especially attractive for the urgent fresh water supply in remote areas.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:This study proposes a multifield assisted strategy based on a gradient 3D structure with high tortuosity, which creates a thermal field environment for efficient evaporation through high absorption of sunlight and excellent photothermal conversion, uses the gradient structure to optimize the internal pressure field to enhance water evaporation and transport and finally achieves a high evaporation rate of 2.59 kg h−1 m−2. Solar interfacial evaporation is a promising method for solving the global shortage of fresh water. While 2D evaporators can efficiently localize solar‐converted heat at the thin layer of the water–air interface, 3D solar evaporators can maximize energy reutilization while maintaining effective mass transport ability, few studies are conducted to explore the effect of gradient porosity on evaporation performance. In this study, a multifield assisted strategy based on a gradient 3D structure with high tortuosity is proposed, which creates a thermal field environment for efficient evaporation through high absorption of sunlight and excellent photothermal conversion and uses the gradient structure to optimize the internal pressure field to enhance water evaporation and transport. This hierarchically nanostructured solar absorber, with porosity inhomogeneity‐induced pressure gradient and optimized temperature management, is a valuable design idea for manufacturing a more efficient 3D solar evaporator in the field of seawater desalination. Owing to the understanding of optimizing the dimension by various simulation parameters, the evaporation efficiencies of such structures are found to be 165.7%, suppressing the most evaporator. Moreover, it can provide new ideas and references for the fields of mass transfer and thermal management.

Abstract:Solar evaporators are promising candidates for clean water production; here, a solar evaporator exploiting the synergistic cooperation of superhydrophilic hierarchical light trapping and wicking structures decorated with enhanced light and liquid sorption of graphene oxide, is proposed demonstrating enhanced water evaporation rates. Solar evaporation has become a promising and sustainable technique for harvesting freshwater from seawater and wastewater. However, the applicability and efficacy of solar evaporation need further improvement to achieve high production closer to theoretical limits in compact systems. A 3D (three‐dimensional) hierarchical inverted conical solar evaporation is developed, which consists of a 3D copper foam skeleton cone decorated with micro‐/nano‐structures functionalized with graphene oxide, fabricated via easy and scalable wet oxidation, impregnation, and drying at room temperature. The proposed configuration empowers high‐efficiency solar absorption, continuous liquid film spreading and transport, enhanced interfacial local evaporation, and rapid vapor diffusion through the pores. More notably, the 3D conical evaporator realizes thermal localization at the skeleton interface and allows evaporation to occur along the complete structure with unimpeded liquid and vapor rapid diffusion. The solar–thermal evaporation efficiency under 1‐Sun is as high as 93% with a maximum evaporation rate per unit area of 1.71 kg·m−2·h−1. This work highlights the benefits of synergistic cooperation of an easily scalable 3D hierarchical functiomicro‐/nano‐structured copper foam skeletons and functionalized graphene oxide for high‐efficient solar evaporation of interest to numerous applications.

Tailoring the Salt Transport Flux of Solar Evaporators for a Highly Effective Salt-Resistant Desalination with High Productivity

Abstract:Developing highly effective salt-resistant solar evaporators for a long-term desalination with a high evaporation rate and water production rate remains a great challenge. Herein, we fabricated a three-dimensional printed hierarchical porous reduced graphene oxide/carbon black (3DP-HP rGO/CB) solar evaporator constructed with a thin layer of porous photothermal interface and a grid of hierarchical porous transport channel possessing a large-sized porous microstructure. The 3DP-HP rGO/CB solar evaporator demonstrates a tailored high-salt transport flux of up to 4.3 kg·m-2·h-1, which displays a highly effective salt-resistant performance at a high evaporation rate of 10.5 kg·m-2·h-1 during a desalination of 10 wt % NaCl brine under 8 kW·m-2 illumination. Experiments and theoretical calculations prove that the large porous microstructure with abundant and low-resistance salt ion channels endows solar evaporators with a high salt transport flux, therefore boosting salt resistance compared to traditional solar evaporators. A 10 d desalination experiment shows the long-term salt resistance of a 3DP-HP rGO/CB solar evaporator for a high-rate and stable evaporation and water production. Furthermore, the 3DP-HP rGO/CB evaporator can purify 10 wt % NaCl brine at an ultrafast water production rate of up to 5.6 L·m-2·h-1 under natural sunlight. This work demonstrates great potential for the practical implementation of solar desalination with high productivity.

The spontaneously formed water film, with thickness inhomogeneity and temperature gradient, fully utilizes the input energy through Marangoni effect and results in localized salt crystallization. Solar-driven water evaporation rate of 2.63 kg m −2 h −1 , with energy efficiency of >96% under one sun illumination and under high salinity (25 wt% NaCl), and water collecting rate of 1.72 kg m −2 h −1 are achieved in purifying natural seawater in a closed system. The crystalized salt freely stands on the 3D evaporator and can be easily removed. Additionally, energy efficiency and water evaporation are not influenced by salt accumulation thanks to an expanded water film inside the salt, indicating the potential for sustainable and practical applications.

Abstract:Solar-driven water steam generation had been recognized as a promising strategy to address water scarcity in an environmentally friendly and cost-effective manner, and the development of an evaporator capable of efficient evaporation and stable long-term operation remains a huge challenge in the field. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) hydrogel-based evaporator consisting of sodium alginate (SA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and carbon dots (CDs) integrated into a melamine sponge (MS) structure was constructed, in which the CDs were firmly bonded to the SA/PVA double crosslinked network through hydrogen bonding, which improved the mechanical properties and load-bearing capacity of the evaporator. Crucially, as highly efficient light-absorbing carbon-based materials, the CDs were homogeneously dispersed in the hydrogel, significantly enhancing the photothermal conversion capability of the evaporator. The test results indicated that the evaporation rate of the 3D-CDs/SA/PVA-MS evaporator reached up to ultra-high solar steam generation rate of 4.79 kg m-2h−1 in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at 1 sun irradiation, and exhibited the relatively excellent evaporation rate (4.13 kg m-2h−1) in high saline seawater (25 wt%). This study aimed to provide a simple and reliable modification method to enhance the evaporation performance and improve the hydrogel network of SA/PVA-based hydrogel evaporator and demonstrate their potential applications in seawater desalination and purification.

Abstract:The escalating global freshwater crisis demands sustainable water management strategies, such as solar-driven interfacial steam generation (SISG). Three-dimensional (3D) photothermal evaporators emerge as a promising solution due to significantly higher evaporation rates compared to two-dimensional (2D) counterparts. This study described the design and fabrication of M-shaped 3D evaporators using the freeze-casting technique with graphite nanopowder (GNP) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). Under 1.0 kW m−2 solar irradiation and 4 m s-1 convective flow, a high evaporation rate of up to 10.5 kg m−2 h−1 in pure water was achieved. The M-shaped 3D evaporators demonstrated excellent performance in solar desalination and wastewater treatment, maintaining stability even in a 20 wt% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution at 1.0 kW m−2 solar irradiation and 2 m s−1 convective flow, with a rate of approximately 3.8 kg m−2 h−1. These findings highlight the significant potential for leveraging the synergistic interplay between solar energy and convective flow, which can be harnessed through the fabrication of customized 3D evaporators via freeze-casting. This innovative approach offers a scalable and cost-effective solution, contributing to both efficient water evaporation and environmentally sustainable high salinity desalination for future water treatment.

Abstract:Compared with conventional two-dimensional (2D) structure, three-dimensional (3D) solar steam generators have presented a considerably higher evaporation rate due to their structure superiority. As an emerging field, 3D printing technology has been attached by significant attention due to its feasibility and designability in the fabrication of micro-nano structures. Herein, inspired by natural light-trapping structures, a novel hierarchical structure assembled from flower-like cobalt tetroxide and 3D-printed stent is prepared. Based on the geometrical light trapping effect, both the flower-like structure in cobalt tetroxide and the hollow morphology in 3D-printed stent can significantly enhance the solar absorption and conversion efficiency through multiple reflection-incidence processes. Since the wetting direction in the cylindrical structure is always from the edge to the center, there will be a large number of salt particles at the edge of the cylinder falling by the virtue of gravity, thus achieving a high salt tolerance, and this process is illustrated by molecular dynamics simulation. Along with the rapid photo-thermal response in the solar spectrum, this 3D-printed hierarchical structure coated with flower-like cobalt tetroxide has achieved a high steam generation rate of 2.028 kg m-2h−1 under one sun irradiation (1.0 kW/m2) and excellent decontamination ability for organic dye-containing solution. Meanwhile, the desirable steam generation rate can maintain an average value of more than 1.8 kg·m-2h−1 for long time. This 3D-printed solar evaporator is highly efficient and salt-tolerant, attributed to the enhanced geometrical light-trapping and artificial channel-array structure, presenting an effective solution for enhancing solar absorption and conversion.

Abstract:Achieving interfacial localized heating and generating abundant heating interface have been verified two critical factors to promote solar energy utilization and vapor generation rate, but still a great challenge. Herein, a sandwich-structured evaporator composes of multilayer Cu-CuO meshes and non-woven cotton via a physical layer-by-layer assembly method is reported, which is obviously different from the currently reported evaporators that only have one light-absorbing layer, thus it is conducive to expose abundant heating interface in a controllable manner, and resulting in the finely designed sandwich-structured evaporator can achieve a high evaporation rate approximately 2.145 kg m−2 h−1. With the advantages of high evaporation rate, cost-effectiveness, simplicity, and reliable drinkable water yields from high-concentration brine, simulated seawater, dye wastewater, and heavy metal wastewater, this novel sandwich-structured design provides a new avenue to build up high-performance solar vapor generation systems.
