Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries are very promising due to low cost and high energy density compared to the current commercial lithium-ion batteries. However, when the anode is selected from lithium metal, it exhibits strong chemical activity since the electrolyte using an organic system and is liable to form lithium dendrites, leading to short lifespan and serious safety hazards. Here, we successfully synthesized the hollow germanium (and sulfur) nanocrystals tightly loaded on graphene nanosheets (Ge-HS/GNs and S-HS/GNs) architecture, and developed a novel configured lithiated germanium-sulfur battery by using lithiated Ge-HS/GNs as anode and S-HS/GNs as cathode. It is worth noting that the full battery displayed a high specific capacity of 586 mA h g(-1) and energy density of 1025 W h kg(-1) at 0.8 A g(-1), outstanding rate performance (> 400 mA h g(-1) under 16 A g(-1)) and maintain a superior cycling stability over 500 cycles under 0.8 A g(-1) (ultraslow capacity loss of 0.015% per cycle). This work provides an effective route towards high-energy rechargeable battery for advanced energy storage.
