Abstract:Recently, the rings whose injective right modules are R-projective (respectively, max-projective) were investigated and studied in [2]. Such ring are called right almost-QF (respectively, max-QF). In this paper, our aim is to give some further characterization of these rings over more general classes of rings, and address several questions about these rings. We obtain characterizations of max-QF rings over several classes of rings including local, semilocal right semihereditary, right nonsingular right noetherian and right nonsingular right finite dimensional rings. We prove that for a ring R being right almost-QF and right max-QF are not left-right symmetric. We also show that right almost-QF and right max-QF rings are not closed under factor rings. This leads to consider the rings all of whose factor rings are almost-QF and max-QF.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative ring. An $R$-module $M$ is said to be almost projective if ${\rm Ext}^1_R(M, N) = 0$ for any $R_{\mathfrak{m}}$-module $N$ and any maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ of $R$. In this paper, we investigate rings $R$ over which every $R$-module has an almost projective envelope. We also characterize rings $R$ over which every $R$-module has an almost projective envelope with some special properties.

Abstract:In this paper, we study modules having the property that are invariant under some idempotent endomorphisms of its injective envelope. Such modules are called essentially Ï€ -injective. It is shown that (1) M is essentially Ï€ -injective iff for any essentially finite direct summand X 1 of M and any submodule X 2 of M with X1âˆ©X2=0 , there exists a direct summand X 0 of M containing X 2 such that M=X1âŠ•X0 , (2) M is essentially Ï€ -injective iff M is an ef-extending right R -module and for any decomposition M=M1âŠ•M2 with M 1 essentially finite, M 1 and M 2 are relatively injective, (3) if M is essentially Ï€ -injective and R satisfies ACC on right ideals of the form r ( m ), mâˆˆM , then M is a direct sum of uniform submodules. We also describe rings via essentially Ï€ -injective modules. It is shown that R is a semisimple artinian ring iff the direct sum of any two essentially Ï€ -injective right R -modules is essentially Ï€ -injective.

Almost coherent modules and almost coherent sheaves

Abstract:We review the theory of almost coherent modules that was introduced in "Almost Ring Theory" by Gabber and Ramero. Then we globalize it by developing a new theory of almost coherent sheaves on schemes and on a class of "nice" formal schemes. We show that these sheaves satisfy many properties similar to usual coherent sheaves, i.e. the Almost Proper Mapping Theorem, the Formal GAGA, etc. We also construct an almost version of the Grothendieck twisted image functor $f^!$ and verify its properties. Lastly, we study sheaves of $p$-adic nearby cycles on admissible formal models of rigid spaces and show that these sheaves provide examples of almost coherent sheaves. This gives a new proof of the finiteness result for étale cohomology of proper rigid spaces obtained before in the work of Peter Scholze "$p$-adic Hodge Theory For Rigid-Analytic Varieties".

Abstract:Suppose that $(\mathcal{F},\mathcal{M})$ is an injective structure of $R$-Mod such that the class $\mathcal{F}$ is closed for direct limits, then two modules in $\mathcal{M}$ are isomorphic if there are maps in $\mathcal{F}$ from each one of the modules into the other. Examples of module classes in such injective structures include (pure, coneat, and RD-) injective modules, as well as $\tau$-injective modules for a hereditary torsion theory $\tau$. Thus providing a generalization of a classical result of Bumby's and two recent ones by Macías-Díaz.

Abstract:It is proved that, for a left hereditary ring, an arbitrary left module has a representation in the form of the direct sum of a stable left module and indecomposable projective left modules (if and only if an arbitrary left module has a representation in the form of the direct sum of a stable left module and a projective left module) if and only if the ring is left perfect and right coherent. In that case, the above-mentioned representations are unique up to isomorphism; the latter representation is also functorial. The essential ingredient in the proofs of the above-mentioned statements is a certain purely categorical result. These statements, in particular, imply that, for any principal ideal domain that is not a field, the fundamental theorem on finitely generated modules over it can not be generalized to the case of all modules. Moreover, with the aid of the above-mentioned categorical approach, we give a new proof of the Zheng-Xu He's result asserting that any module of a ring has a unique up to isomorphism injective-costable decomposition if and only if the ring is left hereditary and left Noetherian. The above-mentioned statements, in particular, imply that if the category of left modules over a left hereditary ring is Krull-Schmidt, then the ring is left Artinian. Yet another criterion for a ring to be left hereditary, left perfect and right coherent (resp. left hereditary left Noetherian) found in the paper requires that the pair $(Stable$ $modules$, $Projective$ $modules)$ (resp. $(Injective$ $Modules, Costable$ $ Modules)$) of module classes be a pre-torsion theory. This implies that the pair $(Stable$ $modules$, $Projective$ $modules)$ is a torsion theory if and only if the ring is left hereditary and the injective envelope of the ring, viewed as a left module over itself, is projective.

Abstract:We call a right module $M$ (strongly) virtually regular if every (finitely generated) cyclic submodule is isomorphic to a direct summand. $M$ is said to be completely virtually regular if every submodule is virtually regular. In this paper, characterizations and some closure properties of the aforementioned modules are given. Several structure results are obtained over commutative rings. In particular, the structures of finitely presented (strongly) virtually regular modules and completely virtually regular modules are fully determined over valuation domains. Namely, for a valuation domain $R$ with the unique maximal ideal $P$, we show that finitely presented (strongly) virtually regular modules are free if and only if $P$ is not principal; and that $P=Rp$ is principal if and only if finitely presented virtually regular modules are of the form $$R^n \oplus (\frac{R}{Rp})^{n_1} \oplus (\frac{R}{Rp^2})^{n_2} \oplus \cdots \oplus (\frac{R}{Rp^k})^{n_k}$$ for nonnegative integers $n,\,k,\,n_1,\,n_2,\cdots ,n_k.$ Similarly, we prove that $P=Rp$ is principal if and only if finitely presented strongly virtually regular modules are of the form $ R^n \oplus (\frac{R}{Rp})^{m}$, where $m,n$ are nonnegative integers. We also obtain that, $R$ admits a nonzero finitely presented completely virtually regular module $M$ if and only if $P=Rp$ is principal. Moreover, for a finitely presented $R$-module $M$, we prove that: $(i)$ if $R$ is not a DVR, then $M$ is completely virtually regular if and only if $M \cong (\frac{R}{Rp})^{m}$; and $(ii)$ if $R$ is a DVR, then $M$ is completely virtually regular if and only if $M\cong R^n \oplus (\frac{R}{Rp})^{m}.$ Finally, we obtain a characterization of finitely generated virtually regular modules over the ring of integers.

Abstract:Let R be a ring, and n and d fixed non-negative integers. An R-module M is called (n, d)-injective if Ext d+1 R (P, M) = 0 for any n-presented R-module P. M is said to be (n, d)-projective if Ext1 R (M, N) = 0 for any (n, d)-injective R-module N. We use these concepts to characterize n-coherent rings and (n, d)-rings. Some known results are extended.

Abstract:Let $A$ be the path algebra of a quiver of Dynkin type $\mathbb{A}_n$. The module category $\text{mod}\,A$ has a combinatorial model as the category of diagonals in a polygon $S$ with $n+1$ vertices. The recently introduced notion of almost rigid modules is a weakening of the classical notion of rigid modules. The importance of this new notion stems from the fact that maximal almost rigid $A$-modules are in bijection with the triangulations of the polygon $S.$ In this article, we give a different realization of maximal almost rigid modules. We introduce a non-standard exact structure $\mathcal{E}_\diamond$ on $\text{mod}\,A$ such that the maximal almost rigid $A$-modules in the usual exact structure are exactly the maximal rigid $A$-modules in the new exact structure. A maximal rigid module in this setting is the same as a tilting module. Thus the tilting theory relative to the exact structure $\mathcal{E}_\diamond$ translates into a theory of maximal almost rigid modules in the usual exact structure. As an application, we show that with the exact structure $\mathcal{E}_\diamond$, the module category becomes a 0-Auslander category in the sense of Gorsky, Nakaoka and Palu. We also discuss generalizations to quivers of type $\mathbb{D}$ and gentle algebras.

Abstract:We construct examples of bounded below, noncontractible, acyclic complexes of finitely generated projective modules over some rings S , as well as bounded above, noncontractible, acyclic complexes of injective modules. The rings S are certain rings of infinite matrices with entries in the rings of commutative polynomials or formal power series in infinitely many variables. In the world of comodules or contramodules over coalgebras over fields, similar examples exist over the cocommutative symmetric coalgebra of an infinite-dimensional vector space. A simpler, universal example of a bounded below, noncontractible, acyclic complex of free modules with one generator, communicated to the author by Canonaco, is included at the end of the paper.

Abstract:We study rings whose modules and module homomorphisms display behavior similar to that of sets and their maps. For example, whenever there is an epimorphism A→B , there is a monomorphism B→A (Artinian principal ideal rings (PIR) satisfy this property and its dual for all modules). As a byproduct of this framework, we prove that a ring every factor ring of which cogenerates its cyclic right modules (one-sided version of Kaplansky's dual rings) is right Artinian and right serial. Consequently, R is an Artinian PIR if and only if every factor ring of R cogenerates its finitely generated right modules. These results can be viewed as partial answers to the CF problem, the FGF problem due to Faith and a question of Faith and Menal on strongly Johns rings. Some known results and the above one yield the following: A ring R is a direct sum of right Artinian right chain rings and Artinian PIR's if and only if every factor ring of R cogenerates its (uniform) cyclic right modules (with nonzero socle); so, such rings coincide with the right CES-rings of Jain and Lopez-Pérmouth, rings whose factors are right CF and rings that satisfy the above mentioned property for their cyclic right modules A and B . Finally, a ring is either simple Artinian or a right Artinian right chain ring if and only if one of any two cyclic right modules embeds in the other.

Abstract:<span>Recently, in a series of papers "simple" versions of direct-injective and direct-projective modules have been investigated. These modules are termed as "simple-direct-injective" and "simple-direct-projective," respectively. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of the aforementioned modules over the ring of integers and over semilocal rings. The ring is semilocal if and only if every right module with zero Jacobson radical is simple-direct-projective. The rings whose simple-direct-injective right modules are simple-direct-projective are fully characterized. These are exactly the left perfect right <i>H</i>-rings. The rings whose simple-direct-projective right modules are simple-direct-injective are right max-rings. For a commutative Noetherian ring, we prove that simple-direct-projective modules are simple-direct-injective if and only if simple-direct-injective modules are simple-direct-projective if and only if the ring is Artinian. Various closure properties and some classes of modules that are simple-direct-injective (resp. projective) are given.</span>

Abstract:Let R be a valuation ring and let Q be its total quotient ring. It is proved that any singly projective (respectively flat) module is finitely projective if and only if Q is maximal (respectively artinian). It is shown that each singly projective module is a content module if and only if any non-unit of R is a zero-divisor and that each singly projective module is locally projective if and only if R is self-injective. Moreover, R is maximal if and only if each singly projective module is separable, if and only if any flat content module is locally projective. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for a valuation ring with non-zero zero-divisors to be strongly coherent or π-coherent.A complete characterization of semihereditary commutative rings which are π-coherent is given. When R is a commutative ring with a self-FP-injective quotient ring Q, it is proved that each flat R-module is finitely projective if and only if Q is perfect.

Abstract:Let m and n be fixed positive integers and M a right R-module. Recall that M is said to be (m,n)-injective if Ext(R)(1) (P,M) = 0 for any (m,n)-presented right R-module P; M is called (m,n)-flat at if Tor(1)(R) (M,Q) = 0 for any (m,n)-presented left R-module Q. In this article, M is defined to be (m,n)-projective (resp. (m,n)-cotorsion) if Ext(R)(1) (M,N) = 0 (resp. Ext(R)(1) (N,M) = 0) for any (m,n)-injective (resp. (m,n)-flat) right R-module N. These concepts are used to characterize von Neumann regular rings and (m,n)-coherent rings. Some known results are extended.
Big pure projective modules over commutative noetherian rings: comparison with the completion

Abstract:A module over a ring $R$ is pure projective provided it is isomorphic to a direct summand of a direct sum of finitely presented modules. We develop tools for the classification of pure projective modules over commutative noetherian rings. In particular, for a fixed finitely presented module $M$, we consider $\mathrm{Add}\, (M)$, which consists of direct summands of direct sums of copies of $M$. We are primarily interested in the case where $R$ is a one-dimensional, local domain, and in torsion-free (or Cohen-Macaulay) modules. We show that, even in this case, $\mathrm{Add}\, (M)$ can have an abundance of modules that are not direct sums of finitely generated ones. Our work is based on the fact that such infinitely generated direct summands are all determined by finitely generated data. Namely, idempotent/trace ideals of the endomorphism ring of $M$ and finitely generated projective modules modulo such idempotent ideals. This allows us to extend the classical theory developed to study the behavior of direct sum decomposition of finitely generated modules comparing with their completion to the infinitely generated case. We study the structure of the monoid $V^*(M)$, of isomorphism classes of countably generated modules in $\mathrm{Add}\, (M)$ with the addition induced by the direct sum. We show that $V^*(M)$ is a submonoid of $V^*(M\otimes _R \widehat R)$, this allows us to make computations with examples and to prove some realization results.

Abstract:Let R be a ring. A left R-module M (respectively right R-module N) is called FI-injective (respectively FI-flat) if Ext1(G,M)=0 (respectively Tor1(N,G)=0) for any FP-injective left R-module G. Suppose R is a left coherent ring. It is shown that a left R-module M is FI-injective if and only if M is a direct sum of an injective left R-module and a reduced FI-injective left R-module; a finitely presented right R-module M is FI-flat if and only if M is a cokernel of a flat preenvelope of a right R-module. These modules together with the left derived functors of Hom are used to study the FP-injective dimensions of modules and rings.
