Abstract:Light-matter interactions with two-dimensional materials gained significant attention in recent years, leading to the reporting of weak and strong coupling regimes and effective nanolaser operation with various structures. Particularly, future applications involving monolayer materials in waveguide-coupled on-chip-integrated circuitry and valleytronic nanophotonics require controlling, directing, and optimizing photoluminescence. In this context, photoluminescence enhancement from monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides on patterned semiconducting substrates becomes attractive. It is demonstrated in our work using focused-ion-beam-etched GaP and monolayer WS2 suspended on hexagonal boron nitride buffer sheets. We present an optical microcavity approach capable of efficient in-plane and out-of-plane confinement of light, which results in a WS2 photoluminescence enhancement by a factor of 10 compared to that of the unstructured substrate at room temperature. The key concept is the combination of interference effects in both the horizontal direction using a bull's-eye-shaped circular Bragg grating and in the vertical direction by means of a multiple-reflection model with optimized etch depth of circular air-GaP structures for maximum constructive interference effects of the applied pump and expected emission light.

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO), a wide direct band gap semiconductor, has attracted extensive attention for its potential optoelectronic applications, such as coherent ultraviolet light emitters. Pure one-dimensional ZnO, structures such as nanorods and nanowires, etc. inevitably have some crystal defects, which makes them to emit not only in the ultraviolet region but also in the visible range. Photoluminescent ZnO‑carbon nanocomposites are an emerging class of nanomaterials that has spurred a lot of interests due to its attractive optical properties. It has been shown that these composite structures yield an enhanced ultraviolet to visible emission ratio due to improved surface plasmon emission and a new defect emission mechanism. Hence, a novel one-dimensional structure of ZnO and carbon nanofibers composite material has been designed and prepared. The scaly ZnO is completely coated with carbon nanofibers. This new composite structure has strong ultraviolet emission photoluminescence characteristics in combination with low visible emission.
Low threshold lasing emissions from a single upconversion nanocrystal

Abstract:Cross-relaxation among neighboring emitters normally causes self-quenching and limits the brightness of luminescence. However, in nanomaterials, cross-relaxation could be well-controlled and employed for increasing the luminescence efficiency at specific wavelengths. Here we report that cross-relaxation can modulate both the brightness of single upconversion nanoparticles and the threshold to reach population inversion, and both are critical factors in producing the ultra-low threshold lasing emissions in a micro cavity laser. By homogenously coating a 5-μm cavity with a single layer of nanoparticles, we demonstrate that doping Tm 3+ ions at 2% can facilitate the electron accumulation at the intermediate state of 3 H 4 level and efficiently decrease the lasing threshold by more than one order of magnitude. As a result, we demonstrate up-converted lasing emissions with an ultralow threshold of continuous-wave excitation of ~150 W/cm 2 achieved at room temperature. A single nanoparticle can lase with a full width at half-maximum as narrow as ~0.45 nm.

Abstract:Manipulating the spontaneous emission rate of fluorophores is vital in creating bright incoherent illumination for optical sensing and imaging, as well as fast single-photon sources for quantum technology applications. This can be done via increasing the Purcell effect by using non-monolithic optical nanocavities; however, achieving the desired performance is challenging due to difficulties in fabrication, precise positioning, and frequency tuning of cavity-emitter coupling. Here, we demonstrate a simple approach to achieve a wavelength-dependent photoluminescence (PL) lifetime modification using monolithic organic molecular aggregates films. These single monolithic organic films are designed to have a Lorentzian dispersion, including epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) and epsilon-near-pole (ENP) spectral regions with increased and decreased photonic density of states, respectively. This dispersion leads to enhanced and depressed PL decay rates at different wavelengths. Both time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) measurements are implemented to verify the validity of this approach. This approach offers a promising way to design dual-functional optical sources for a variety of applications, including bioimaging, sensing, data communications, and quantum photonics applications.

Abstract:Based on the local surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag nanolayer, the luminescence enhancement in the visible light range of multilayer thin film has been investigated combined with metal/spacer molecule/photoluminescence material structure. The luminescence enhancement effect of multilayer thin films can be improved by adjusting the spin-coating number of Ag nanolayer and SiO2 spacer in the multilayer structure. At the same time, the mechanism of enhanced luminescence has been analyzed according to the change in fluorescence lifetime. The effect of the coupling between Ag nanolayer and luminescence layer on the radiative transition rate and fluorescence quantum yield have been discussed. The up-conversion luminescence intensity of the noble metal-modified multilayer thin film can be further improved by combining the multilayer structure with sensitized layer.

Abstract:Organic semiconductors as a gain medium have attracted much attention in organic lasers due to their unique properties, i.e., large stimulated emission cross section, widely tunable spectrum region, and mechanical flexibility. Aggregation-caused quenching broadly exists in amorphous solid films and single crystals, which result in high threshold. Here, we studied amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and lasing properties of an aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) molecule, namely, 2PB-AC, who owns high photoluminescence quantum efficiency in a solid film and a single crystal. The grown long rod-like single crystals exhibited very good ASE characteristics with a threshold of 48 μJ cm−2 and a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 8.4 nm. Furthermore, when forming polymer microspheres by a surface tension-induced self-assembly method, a low lasing threshold of 0.32 mJ cm−2 and a FWHM of 0.41 nm were also obtained well, and their lasing modes could be modulated by changing the diameter of the microspheres. The investigations on transient photoluminescence dynamics and femtosecond transient absorption analysis demonstrated that the high radiative decay rate and the well separation between a stimulated emission band and an excited state absorption band are the main reasons of good lasing performance, indicating that AEE molecules are promising lasing materials.

Abstract:Control of the optical behavior of active materials through manipulation of their microstructure has led to the development of high-performance photonic devices with enhanced integration density, improved quantum efficiencies and controllable color output. However, the achievement of robust light-harvesting materials with tunable, broadband and flattened emission remains a long-standing goal owing to the limited inhomogeneous broadening in ordinary hosts. Here, we describe an effective strategy for the management of photon emission by manipulating the mesoscale heterogeneities in optically active materials. Importantly, this unique approach enables control of dopant–dopant and dopant–host interactions on the extended mesoscale. This allows the generation of intriguing optical phenomena such as a high activation ratio of the dopant (close to 100%), dramatically inhomogeneous broadening (up to 480 nm), notable emission enhancement and, moreover, simultaneously extension of the emission bandwidth and flattening of the spectral shape in glass and fiber. Our results highlight that the findings connect the understanding of and manipulation in the mesoscale realm to functional behavior on the macroscale, and the approach to manage the dopants based on mesoscale engineering may provide new opportunities for the construction of a robust fiber light source. Manipulating the mesoscale structure enables broadband emission from glass and fibre optic cables. To produce compact light sources for applications such as broadband telecommunication and surgical microscopy, researchers are experimenting with glass and fibres with luminescent cores that are doped with transition-metal ions. Shifeng Zhou from the South China University of Technology and co-workers have discovered that medium-range interactions between dopants and their host matrix can significantly widen emitted wavelength ranges to give brighter, broader light sources. Applying mesoscale engineering approach for a tantalate glass system produced localized heterogeneous regions, which can isolate emission centres. The team demonstrated the potential of this pioneering strategy by constructing glass and optical fibre with tunable luminescent output, and extremely broad bandwidth up to ~480 nm which is the largest value ever reported in doped glass to date. A new principle for management of dopant–dopant and dopant–host interactions by manipulation of mesoscale heterogeneity in a single active material is presented. The proposed mesoscale engineering approach results in dramatically inhomogeneous broadening of dopant, and for the first time show success in simultaneously extending emission bandwidth and flattening spectral shape in a doped glass and fiber.
The enhancement and regulation of lasing in dye-doped multi-layer polymer film systems

Abstract:As a new research hotspot in nano-materials and nano-structures, photoluminescence is widely used in medical imaging, biosensors, integrated devices and other fields because of its excellent optical performance and good stability. The design and fabrication of these nanostructures are expensive and complex, meanwhile, the influence of film structure change on lasing characteristics has not been systematically summarized. Thus, there are still challenges to realizing lasing regulation by using a multilayer film system. In this study, a dye-doped multilayer system was prepared by a convenient spin-coating method on polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) film. The effects of sandwich-like film and Au nanoparticles on the lasing characteristics were studied. The results show that the sandwich-like film can form a mirror symmetry plane and increase the photon scattering frequency. Furthermore, the band-gap edge effect can effectively improve the photon gain, enhancing the optical feedback and realizing band-edge lasing. The lasing intensity in the sandwich-like film is nearly 30% higher than that of the bilayer film system at the same pump energy. By adding Au nanoparticles as scatterers, the local electromagnetic field can be enhanced because of the surface plasmon resonance, improving the transition rate of dye molecules. Meanwhile, the photon scattering frequency among the scattering cross-section can also be increased, increasing the interaction between photons and dye. The lasing intensity can be enhanced by 160% at the same pump energy because of the interaction between the plasmon resonance effect and the scattering effect. The fabrication method in this study is convenient and easy to implement, which is conducive to improving the lasing intensity and provides an effective technical way for the realization of a modulated random laser.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have a promising future in the nanophotonics field due to Fr their unique optoelectronic properties such as large exciton binding energies and carrier mobility. Among these properties, monolayer TMDs exhibit enhanced photoluminescence (PL) by utilizing micro-/nanostructure surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes. In this work, we present a unique technique to achieve substantial PL enhancement by integrating MoS2 monolayers to gold quasi-periodic nanoterrace morphology with gradient periods on fused silica substrates. Gold quasi-periodic nanostructures were fabricated through cost-effective and fast ion bombardment with iron co-deposition followed by a gold coating technique, and monolayers were deposited by a polymer-assisted technique. Our results show clear evidence that the light emission is enhanced due to the SPP modes produced by the quasi-periodic nanoterrace morphology. Comprehensive spectroscopy studies were performed on monolayer flakes with different laser polarizations, morphology periods, and temperatures to offer detailed insights on the mechanism behind PL enhancement. Together with numerical simulations, our results provided a basis for understanding the PL enhancement effects and shed light on future directions of high-efficiency light-emitting devices such as diodes, lasers, and heterostructure solar cells based on TMD monolayers.
Metal Nanowire‐Induced Enhancement of Surface Emission in Luminescent Glass

Abstract:This study introduces a method for enhancing surface emission in erbium‐doped glass by coating it with silver nanowires and copper nanowire‐graphene hybrids. Experimental and Finite‐Difference Time‐Domain (FDTD) simulation results demonstrate an emission increase of up to 117.27%, providing a scalable approach for improving the optical performance of photonic materials. Luminescent glass, as an important component of photonic materials, is extensively utilized in applications such as lasers and optical fiber amplifiers, which demand high quantum efficiency. To further enhance the surface emission performance of luminescent glass, this study introduces a novel approach by employing custom‐made metal nanowires, applying them as coatings on the surface of Erbium‐doped glass, rather than embedding traditional metal nanoparticles. Utilizing experimental techniques and Finite‐Difference Time‐Domain (FDTD) simulations, it is demonstrated that the surface‐emission from Erbium‐doped glass coated with silver nanowires or copper nanowire‐graphene hybrids is significantly increased, showing an enhancement rate of up to 117.27% compared to intrinsic glass. Extended FDTD analysis reveals that variations in the size and density of the nanowires can optimize emission characteristics, thereby improving the emission performance of luminescent glass. The enhancement of the local electromagnetic field at the interface underscores the efficacy of metal nanowires in boosting photonic materials. This study not only highlights the practicality of metal nanowires in photonics but also introduces a rapid deployment pathway for customizing photonic interactions through nano‐engineering, potentially extendable to other photonic materials.

Abstract:Polymer micro- and nano-fibers, made of organic light-emitting materials with optical gain, show interesting lasing properties. Fibers with diameters from few tens of nm to few microns can be fabricated by electrospinning, a method based on electrostatic fields applied to a polymer solution. The morphology and emission properties of these fibers, composed of optically inert polymers embedding laser dyes, are characterized by scanning electron and fluorescence microscopy, and lasing is observed under optical pumping for fluences of the order of 10^2 microJ cm^-2. In addition, light-emitting fibers can be electrospun by conjugated polymers, their blends, and other active organics, and can be exploited in a range of photonic and electronic devices. In particular, waveguiding of light is observed and characterized, showing optical loss coefficient in the range of 10^2-10^3 cm^-1. The reduced size of these novel laser systems, combined with the possibility of achieving wavelength tunability through transistor or other electrode-based architectures embedding non-linear molecular layers, and with their peculiar mechanical robustness, open interesting perspectives for realizing miniaturized laser sources to integrate on-chip optical sensors and photonic circuits.
Intrinsic Ultralow-Threshold Laser Action from Rationally Molecular Design of Metal–Organic Framework Materials

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are superior for multiple applications including drug delivery, sensing, and gas storage because of their tunable physiochemical properties and fascinating architectures. Optoelectronic application of MOFs is difficult because of their porous geometry and conductivity issues. Recently, a few optoelectronic devices have been fabricated by a suitable design of integrating MOFs with other materials. However, demonstration of laser action arising from MOFs as intrinsic gain media still remains challenging, even though some studies endeavor on encapsulating luminescence organic laser dyes into the porous skeleton of MOFs to achieve laser action. Unfortunately, the aggregation of such unstable laser dyes causes photoluminescence quenching and energy loss, which limits their practical application. In this research, unprecedently, we demonstrated ultralow-threshold (∼13 nJ/cm<sup>2</sup>) MOF laser action by a judicious choice of metal nodes and organic linkers during synthesis of MOFs. Importantly, we also demonstrated that the white random lasing from the beautiful microflowers of organic linkers possesses a porous network, which is utilized to synthesize the MOFs. The highly luminescent broad-band organic linker 1,4-NDC, which itself exhibits a strong white random laser, is used not only to achieve the stimulated emission in MOFs but also to reduce the lasing threshold. Such white lasing has multiple applications from bioimaging to the recently developed versatile Li-Fi technology. In addition, we showed that the smooth facets of MOF microcrystals can show Fabry–Perot resonant cavities having a high quality factor of ∼10<sup>3</sup> with excellent photostability. Abstract:Quasi-period cylindrical nanostructures with both diameters and intervals of about 100 nm are manufactured on the surfaces of Nd3+-doped lanthanum lead zirconate titanate ceramics by femtosecond laser irradiation under SF6 atmosphere. A light-emission enhancement of more than 20 times is investigated, accompanied by an extremely long trailing-off time of light emission and lower threshold. A specific polarization state of the light emission is achieved and tuned by changing the incident regions of the pumping source. The increased absorption coefficient of the specimen is discussed based on multiple scattering and weak localization of light. In addition, both the scatterers provided by the laser-machined nanostructure and the recurrent photoinduced trapping and re-excitation process participated in the enhancement of the light emission. This Letter offers new insight to improve the luminescence property of laser materials, as well as to broaden the range of exploring the weak localization of light and random lasers. Abstract:Cathodoluminescence can probe photonic responses of nanostructures at high spatial and energy resolution, providing a powerful tool to investigate the radiative properties under electron excitations in nanophotonics. The radiative properties of semiconductors can be effectively modulated by the surrounding electromagnetic environment that directly determines the efficiency of emitters. As emitter devices develop into the nanoregion, nanoscale control of their spontaneous emission is essential for a deeper comprehension of intrinsic physics. Plasmonic nanostructures have been employed to enhance the emitter spontaneous emission due to their remarkable capability in confining light beyond the diffraction limit. In this paper, we realize efficiently selective modulation of ZnO emission at the nanoscale using cathodoluminescence microscopy and spectroscopy. By controlling the excitation position of the electron beam, different plasmon resonant modes of the Al nonamer structure can be selectively stimulated. With the plasmon resonance tuned from the ultraviolet to the visible region, the spontaneous emission rate of ZnO corresponding to the band-gap transition and defect transition can be selectively enhanced with an increased plasmonic radiative local density of states. The experimental method gives fundamental insights on the plasmon-enhanced luminescence of semiconductors at the nanoscale, which facilitates ZnO-based applications in future optoelectronic devices and promotes development of nanophotonics.

Because two of the dimensions is comparable to or even smaller than the wavelengths of the PL, the nanowires are expected to show a variety of quantum confinement effects, such as density of state singularities, macro molecular behaviour over the long distances, high coherence of the emission, much high luminescence efficiency and low lasing threshold which is essential to construct novel integrated photo electronic devices in nanoscale. Besides, the high surface-tovolume ratio of these nanostructures also allows studying the role of surface states (and their ambient-driven changes) in determining the nanostructure carrier transport and optical excitation/recombination properties. The surface state and quantum confinement are two fundamental effects responsible to the photo electronic characteristic of nanostructures. Naturally the photoelectronic properties determine the future application for nanostructures including nanoparticles, nanowires, nanorods and so on. For example photo electronic properties determine whether the nanowires fabricated are suitable for such electronic application as field emission and photo-detection etc. Meanwhile many kinds of nanowires whose bulk materials can be used as photo luminescent sources are taken granted as the nanolaser active media. Such an idea needs lots of experiment to examine and confirm by the data of both the steady-state spectroscopy and time-resolved spectroscopy dynamically. Therefore we demonstrate a series studies on dynamic mechanism of nanowires (1 dimensional structure) and nanoparticles (0 dimensional structures) with respect to time, excitation density and photonic energy of PL. The sample focused are zinc oxide (ZnO)(Wang et al., 2009), carbon silicon (SiC)(Zhao et al., 2007), tungsten oxide (WO) covering both direct bandgap semiconductor and indirect bandgap semiconductors. The following will present the surface state effect on nanoparticles, ultrafast light emission from nanowires and directional lasing behaviour from nanotree. The mechanism of the ultrafast light emission will be discussed qualitatively.

Abstract:An aggregation-induced emission luminogen active in both linear and nonlinear optics has been demonstrated by Y. Feng, Th. Rasing, J. Xu and co-workers on page 8968. The self-assembled microstructures demonstrate a linear optical quantum efficiency ten times higher than that of the solution state, and a highly efficient second harmonic generation signal greater than that of industrial inorganic materials including KDP or LiNbO3.

Abstract:The spatial separation between the highest occupied and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (HOMO and LUMO) in thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) molecules leads to charge transfer (CT) states, which degrade the oscillator strength of emission transition and sacrifices high solid-state photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), together limiting its application in organic solid-state lasers (OSSLs). Here, we demonstrated organic microwire lasers from TADF emitters that combine aggregation induced emission (AIE) and local excited (LE) state characteristics. The unique AIE and LE feature lead to a PLQY approaching 50% and a high optical gain of 870 cm-1 for TADF microwires. The regenerated singlet excitons by reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process are conducive to population inversion. As a result, we demonstrated microwire lasers around 465 nm with a low threshold of 3.74 μJ cm-2. Therefore, our work provides insight to design TADF materials for OSSLs.

Giant Enhancement of Photoluminescence Emission in Monolayer WS2 by Femtosecond Laser Irradiation

Abstract:Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides have emerged as promising materials for optoelectronic and nanophotonic devices. However, the low photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) hinders their various potential applications. Here we engineer and enhance the PL intensity of monolayer WS2 by femtosecond laser irradiation. More than two orders of magnitude enhancement of PL intensity as compared to the as-prepared sample is determined. Furthermore, the engineering time is shortened by three orders of magnitude as compared to the improvement of PL intensity by continuous-wave laser irradiation. Based on the evolution of PL spectra, we attribute the giant PL enhancement to the conversion from trion emission to exciton, as well as the improvement of the QY when exciton and trion are localized to the new-formed defects. We have created microstructures on the monolayer WS2 based on the enhancement of PL intensity, where the engineered structures can be stably stored for more than three years. This flexible approach with the feature of excellent long-term storage stability is promising for applications in information storage, display technology, and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:High solid-state quantum efficiency (Phi(PL) approximate to 0.90) materials with attractive properties for OLED and laser applications are reported. Our results show that long fluorene chain-lengths are not a necessary prerequisite for efficient solid-state luminescence. Isolated-molecule-like solid-state emission, stable pure-deep-blue electroluminescence, and low-threshold lasing (lambda(laser) = 437 nm, E-th(laser) approximate to 0.4 nJ/pulse, 1.3 mu J cm(-2)) are demonstrated.
