Abstract:With steady growth on CO2 emission over the years, removal of CO2 from the environment is a critical issue in preventing global warming and climate change. Due to negligible volatility and remarkable thermal stability, ionic liquids have become potential media for CO2 capture. However, their drawbacks such as high price, toxicity and inefficient energy consumption have severely limited their applications in CO2 capture. Here, a promising deep eutectic solvent was synthesized by a one-pot method, simply mixing NH4Cl with monoethanolamine (MEA) at 30 degrees C for 30 min to form [MEAHCI][MEA] confirmed by H-1 NMR. [MEAHCI][MEA] with EG exhibits a rapid initial kinetics of CO2 absorption, around 22.5 wt% within 10 min. It also has good thermal-stability, high tolerance to water contents, economically feasibility of regeneration and robust performance in recycle. This novel capture system which can be prepared on-site is feasible for industrialization and offers an efficient, inexpensive and safe system for CO2 capture. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. A Water-Lean Triazole Ionic Liquid Biphasic Solvent for Energy-Efficient CO2 Capture Through Reversible Polarity and Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonding

Abstract:The development of novel functionalized solvents with low volatility, high mass capacity, and low energy consumption for CO2 capture technology is still a significant challenge. In this study, two triazole-functionalized ionic liquids (TFILs) were designed and combined with imidazole organic solvents as phase separation agents to form novel biphasic solvents for CO2 capture. When the mass ratio of [N-2222][1,2,4-Triz]/1-methylimidazole (N-MI) was 5:4, the CO2 capacity reached 0.112 g of CO2/g of solvent at 40 degrees C and 1 bar, in which the CO2-rich phase accounts for 95% of the total CO2 capacity and 60% of the total volume. Meanwhile, the energy consumption for CO2 desorption of [N-2222][1,2,4-Triz]/N-MI (5:4) was 1.29 GJ/ton CO2, which is 65.78% lower than that of 30 wt % MEA aqueous solution. The results indicated that [N-2222][1,2,4-Triz] can react with CO2 to produce carbamate that existed in the CO2-rich phase. Therefore, the original homogeneous liquid was transformed into liquid-solid phase during CO2 absorption due to the great difference in polarity between imidazole organic solvents and carbamate products, as well as strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding between carbamate products. This study provides useful guidance for designing novel phase-change solvents with high CO2 absorption performance and low energy consumption.

Abstract:Using biphasic solvents for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture is regarded as a promising technology to drastically reduce the regeneration energy. However, this technology hasn't been put into commercial application due to lack of the biphasic solvents with high stabilities and low costs. To overcome this challenge, we developed a novel type of biphasic solvent based on alkanolamine-alkanolamine blends, i.e., aqueous blends of 2-(diethylamino)-ethanol (DEEA, 50 wt%) and monoethanolamine (MEA, 25 wt%) or 2-((2-aminoethyl) amino) ethanol (AEEA, 25 wt%). The aqueous DEEA-AEEA solvent demonstrated a cyclic capacity as high as 0.64 mol CO2/mol which is significantly higher than those of 30 wt% MEA and other reported biphasic solvents. In addition, a phase split time as short as a few minutes is obtained. The phase split dynamics were analyzed to investigate the effects of CO2 loading, temperature, gas flow rate and height-to-diameter ratio. Quantitative C-13 NMR analysis was then performed to reveal the reaction and phase split mechanism of CO2 absorption in the DEEA-AEEA solvent. It indicated that the reaction of AEEA with CO2 dominated at the beginning of CO2 absorption and the products are formed as carbamates. Then, DEEA began reacting with CO2 to yield bicarbonate and carbonate. The phase split mechanism indicated that the reaction products of carbamates and HCO3- /CO32- migrated to the lower phase while DEEA and unreacted AEEA migrated to the upper phase. Finally, the cyclic tests were repeated and the energy consumption was evaluated. The regeneration energy of the biphasic solvent, without process optimizations, is 2.58 GJ/tCO(2), which is 32% lower than that of the traditional 30 wt% MEA solvent.

Abstract:CO2 capture using biphasic solvents is a promising technology for a significant reduction in regeneration energy. However, the existing biphasic solvents suffer significant amine loss because volatile tertiary amines with a high concentration (similar to 60 wt %) are used as the phase separation promoter. To address this drawback, high boiling point physical solvents were employed into aqueous alkanolamines to exploit a biphasic solvent for CO2 capture. We utilized diethylene glycol dimethyl ether (DEGDME) and sulfolane as the phase separation promoters and developed 2-amino-2-methyl-l-propanol (AMP)/monoethanolamine (MEA) blend-based physical-chemical biphasic solvents. Distribution of CO2 loading, amine species, physical solvents, and water in the two phases after CO2 absorption were investigated to optimize the phase separation behavior. C-13 NMR analysis indicated that CO2 absorption in an AMP/MEA-based physical-chemical solution is first dominated by CO2 reaction with MEA and then followed by the hydrolysis reaction of AMP carbamate at high CO2 loading. The physical solvents facilitate the extraction of water and CO2 reaction products and result in liquid phase separation. The CO2 absorption rate in AMP/MEA-based physical-chemical solution is faster than in aqueous AMP/MEA. The optimal AMP/MEA-based physical-chemical biphasic solvent shows a 69% higher CO2 capacity and a 36% lower regeneration energy than 30% MEA. Further, both effects of increased viscosity and the phase separation on the regeneration energy were evaluated.

Abstract:Biphasic solvents for CO 2 capture have received significant attention due to their potential for energy conservation. However, traditional biphasic solvents result in highly viscous CO 2 rich-phases and high amine losses. To overcome these drawbacks, we have developed a novel alkanolamine-based biphasic solvent by blending 2-(methylamino) ethanol (MAE), 3-(dimethylamino)propan-1-ol (3DMA1P), diethylene glycol dimethyl ether (DGM), and water. The aqueous MAE/3DMA1P/DGM solvent showed a cyclic capacity of 0.45 mol CO 2 /mol amine, which is 1.8 times that of monoethanolamine (MEA), and a desorption rate and regeneration efficiency twice those of MEA. The viscosity of the biphasic solvents can be reduced to 13.12 mPa⋅s at 313 K, which is lower than that of reported biphasic solvents. The evaluated regeneration energy was 2.33 GJ/ton CO 2 . Cation chromatography measurements revealed the tendency of MAE to accumulate in the CO 2 -rich phase with increasing CO 2 absorption loading. Quantitative 13 C NMR analyses were performed to investigate the species distribution in both phases, and DGM was found to be the major component of the CO 2 -lean phase. Different solubilities of the MAE molecules and MAE carbamate in DGM resulted in phase separation. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on the CO 2 -unloaded and CO 2 -loaded solutions verified the phase separation mechanism. MAE molecules tended to cluster, and the interactions between MAE and DGM dropped significantly, with increasing DGM concentration.

Abstract:Biphasic solvents have been attracting increasing attention in CO2 capture recently due to its energy-saving potential. However, most current biphasic solvents still face the problem of limited desorption performance. To solve the problem, a novel biphasic solvent of 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine (AEP)/1-propanol/H2O solution was proposed. The absorption capacity was 1.26 mol CO2.mol(-1) amine, which was 2.3 times that of MEA. The regeneration efficiency was 74% and the cyclic capacity after 5 absorption-desorption experiments was 0.90 mol CO2.mol(-1) amine, which was 2.7 times that of MEA. The absorption-desorption performance of AEP/1-propanol/H2O solution was much better compared with most current biphasic solvents. Meanwhile, AEP/1-propanol/H2O solution had a low regeneration heat of 2.74 GJ.t(-1)-CO2, which was 27.9% lower than that of MEA. Moreover, 13C NMR analysis was used to investigate the absorption-desorption mechanism and species distribution. The multiple amino groups in AEP could react with CO2 to produce carbamate and carbonate. The generated absorption products were mainly concentrated in the CO2-rich phase, while the CO2-lean phase contained much 1propanol. Most of the absorption products were decomposed during regeneration, so the high desorption performance was achieved. Overall, AEP/1-propanol/H2O solution is a promising energy-saving candidate for industrial CO2 capture due to its competitive absorption-desorption performance and low regeneration energy.

Abstract:Biphasic solvents have been widely studied for CO 2 capture due to their remarkable energy-saving potentiality. However, most existing biphasic solvents suffer from the high viscosity of their CO 2 -rich phase. This study proposed a novel low-viscous secondary amine-based nonaqueous biphasic solvent for CO 2 capture. With dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as the organic diluent and pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as the phase splitting agent, the secondary amine of 2-methyl-ethynolamine (MAE) was proved to be the optimal candidate for preparing the biphasic solvent. The MAE/DMSO/PMDETA (M/D/P) biphasic solvent could realize a high CO 2 loading of 0.84 mol mol −1 and the viscosity of its CO 2 -rich phase was only 8.87 mPa·s, which was significantly lower than that of most reported biphasic solvents. The reaction mechanism analysis revealed that M/D/P absorbed CO 2 to form products of protonated amines, carbamate, and carbamic acid species. Since the products were polar and showed a stronger affinity to polar DMSO, while less polar PMDETA was isolated, thereby resulting in a phase change. Thermodynamics analysis showed that the M/D/P biphasic solvent could sharply cut down the sensible heat and latent heat during CO 2 desorption. Eventually, the total regeneration energy penalty of M/D/P was significantly reduced by 46.3% compared with the benchmark aqueous MEA solution.

Novel Nonaqueous Liquid–Liquid Biphasic Solvent for Energy-Efficient Carbon Dioxide Capture with Low Corrosivity

Abstract:To address the problems of the relatively high energy penalty and corrosivity of aqueous biphasic solvents, a novel nonaqueous biphasic solvent composed of 2-((2-aminoethyl)amino)ethanol (AEEA), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and N,N,N′,N″,N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) was proposed for CO2 capture. With optimization, this novel AEEA–DMSO–PMDETA (A–D–P) biphasic solvent could achieve a high CO2 loading of 1.75 mol·mol–1, of which 96.8% of the absorbed CO2 was enriched in the lower phase with only 49.6% of the total volume. 13C NMR analysis and quantum calculations revealed that A–D–P could absorb CO2 to form not only carbamate but also carbamic acid species, which were stabilized by DMSO via hydrogen-bonding interactions. Most products were highly polar and preferred to dissolve in polar DMSO rather than the less polar PMDETA, thus leading to the phase change. The thermodynamics results showed that the heat duty of A–D–P was only 1.66 GJ·ton–1 CO2 (393.15 K), which was significantly lower than that of the benchmark MEA (3.59 GJ·ton–1 CO2) and the reported aqueous biphasic solvents. Moreover, A–D–P presented a noncorrosive behavior to steel after CO2 saturation, clearly showing its superiority over MEA and the aqueous biphasic solvents. Abstract:Biphasic solvents are regarded as promising candidates for CO 2 capture but still suffer from the deficiency of inferior regenerability, which negatively affects their energy-saving potential. 2-Amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP)-based absorbents have superior regenerability but poor phase-change performance. In this study, an effective strategy that using tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) to regulate the phase change behavior of an AMP-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) aqueous solution was proposed, aiming to develop a novel AMP-PMDETA-TEPA (A-P-T) biphasic solvent with good regenerability and excellent phase separation performance. The A-P-T biphasic solvent could realize a high CO 2 loading of 0.73 mol mol −1 and a high desorption efficiency of 75.3%. Its sensible heat requirement significantly decreased to 0.14 GJ·ton −1 CO 2 , 78.1% less than the monoethanolamine solution. The 13 C NMR characterization and quantum chemistry calculations indicated that with the introduction of TEPA, high polar TEPA-associated products were generated, which broke the original assimilation state of the A-P-T system and drove it to undergo phase change. Since the TEPA-associated products had a strong affinity to other CO 2 -captured products and H 2 O, they gathered together to form the CO 2 -rich phase. In contrast, less polar PMDETA showed a relatively weak affinity to the TEPA-associated products and was solely separated from the solution to form the CO 2 -lean phase.

Abstract:Physical solvent is a promising alternative for the phase splitting of solvent to drastically reduce the regeneration energy during CO2 capture. Here, an aqueous biphasic solvent, optimally composed of 30 wt % polyamine (N, N-dimethylpropylamine, DMPA) and 50 wt % physical solvent (polyethyleneglycol dimethyl ether, NHD), is prepared, which presents high cyclic loading, low regeneration energy, and good stability. L16(45) orthogonal tests are performed to comprehensively evaluate the mass-transfer kinetics and the effect of crucial conditions, verifying the weak effect of NHD solvent on mass transfer. The solvent effect of NHD could decrease the energy barrier of carbamate generation from zwitterions (DMPA+COO-) to enhance chemical absorption. The low polarity of the NHD solvent provides source motivation and accelerates phase splitting. Time-space resolution distribution of CO2 capacity is established based on a scale-up separator with 5 L solvent, which supports multiscale force analysis for the various stages during phase splitting. The drag force of the homogeneous cluster was first introduced into separation dynamics, referred to as an important reason for the various splitting behaviors of a scale-up separator.

Abstract:Amino-functionalized ionic liquid biphasic solvents present excellent absorption capacity, regeneration ability, and energy consumption savings, which make them a possible candidate for CO2 capture. The kinetics and regeneration heat duty of the [TETAH][Lys]-ethanol-water system capturing CO2 were investigated in this work. The mass transfer and kinetic parameters, including the overall reaction rate constant (kov), the reaction rate constant (k2), and the enhancement factor (E), were assessed at diverse concentrations and temperatures. At 303.15 K, the k2 of CO2 capture into the [TETAH][Lys]-ethanol-water solution was 58,907.30 m3 kmol−1 s−1. The Arrhenius equation was introduced to evaluate the relations between k2 and the reaction temperature, which can be presented as ( {k}_{2,left[mathrm{TETAH} ight]left[mathrm{Lys} ight]hbox{-} mathrm{ethanol}hbox{-} mathrm{water}}=1.9941 imes {10}^{15}exp left(-frac{7388.1}{T} ight) ) The regeneration heat duty of the novel biphasic solvent was 35.5 and 62.39% lower than those of [TETAH][Lys]-water and the benchmark monoethanolamine solution, respectively. An efficient absorption performance and lower energy requirement indicate the great potential for this application.

Abstract:We report a new cyclic process using a biphasic solvent as a potential technology for energy conservation during CO2 capture. In this work, a biphasic solvent comprising diethylenetriamine (DETA), sulfolane, and H2O was used. The solubility of CO2 in the blends of DETA-sulfolane-H2O was measured at different temperatures (313.2-393.2 K) and CO2 partial pressures (up to 400 kPa). Distributions of components at different CO2 loadings were analyzed for both phases by total organic carbon and elemental analyses. The results indicate that DETA and CO2 were concentrated in the upper phase and sulfolane stayed mostly in the lower phase. The separation of the biphasic system was due to the limited solubility of the carbamate, dicarbamate, and tricarbamate products that formed when DETA reacted with CO2 in sulfolane. A biphasic cyclic process with a blend of 20% DETA + 40% sulfolane + 40% H2O in absorption, and then, 60% of a blend with 30% DETA + 10% sulfolane + 60% H2O regenerated in desorption was established. Improving the absorption load, high viscosity, and regeneration efficiency of CO2 capture using a novel tri-solvent biphasic solvents of TETA-AMP-1DMA2P

Abstract:Currently, biphasic solvents are receiving more attention for CO2 capture due to their energy-saving potential. Whereas, most of the current biphasic solvents still suffer from high viscosity and low regeneration efficiency. To solve this problem, a novel tri-solvent biphasic solvent triethylenetetramine (TETA)-2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP)-1-dimethylamino-2-propanol (1DMA2P) was proposed in this study, and its absorption properties, viscosity changes, desorption properties, recyclability capacity, and reaction mechanism were explored. The results showed that the CO2 absorption load showed a trend of firstly increasing and then decreasing with the increase of AMP concentration. Although the volume of the rich phase increased with increasing AMP concentration after the absorption, it also decreases the viscosity growth. The viscosity of the solution decreased from 498 mPa•s to 91 mPa•s. During the desorption process, the maximal desorption rates of AMP-containing solvents is significantly greater than that of 2 mol/L (M) TETA + 2 M 1DMA2P (2T2D). Simultaneously, the recyclability capacity of the AMP-containing solvents were also significantly higher than that of 2T2D. The regeneration efficiency of 1.5 M TETA + 0.5 M AMP + 2 M 1DMA2P (1.5T0.5A2D) was 81.92%. It was concluded by 13C NMR analysis that amino groups in TETA and AMP can react with CO2 to form carbamates and carbonates. Since AMP in the biphasic solution can generate free protons through various pathways during the desorption process, it promotes the decomposition of TETA-carbamate. This process achieves the deep stripping of CO2 in biphasic solvent. Overall, TETA-AMP-1DMA2P solution is a promising energy-saving candidate for industrial CO2 capture due to its competitive absorption-desorption performance and low viscosity.

Abstract:<div><h2>Abstract</h2>A monoethanolamine/1-propanol aqueous biphasic absorbent with rapid absorption rate and low regeneration energy was proposed to enhance the CO2 capture technology. 1-propanol was used as a physical solvent and phase splitter, which increased the mass transfer coefficient from 1.83 to 2.36 × 10−10 mol cm−2 s−1 Pa−1 and triggered the liquid–liquid phase separation due to the salting-out effect. CO2 capture process was modeled using an Aspen plus simulator by incorporating a decanter according to experimental results of phase separation. Energy consumption was analyzed considering the solvent circulation rate, lean loading, operating pressure, and biphasic solvent concentration. Because only the CO2-rich phase was required to be regenerated, a decreased stripping volume and high mCO2/mH2O were achieved. Sensible and vaporization heats substantially decreased by 80% and 75%, respectively, and the total regeneration energy decreased by 39.85%. Moreover, the cyclic capacity was increased from 1.01 to 2.51 mol/kg, which substantially reduced the equipment footprint. This study provides new insights into biphasic solvents with considerable energy saving for CO2 capture.</div>

Abstract:A novel, sustainable, dual-functionalized amino ionic liquid biphasic solvent of 3-(Dimethylamino)-1-propylamine-1,2,4-triazole/poly (ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether/water ([DMAPA][TZ]/NHD/water) was proposed for CO 2 capture to reduce the consumption of regeneration energy. Experimental results showed that the CO 2 absorption loading of the solvent was 1.95 mol CO 2 ·L −1 solvent at a CO 2 partial pressure of 15 kPa. The volume of the CO 2 -rich phase was 40 vol% of the total volume, with a loading of up to 4.65 mol CO 2 ·L −1 solvent, accounting for approximately 95.4% of the blended CO 2 loading in the solvent. The CO 2 -rich phase could be regenerated by 92.3% in 10 min at 373 K, without the presence of a lean phase. The regeneration efficiency of the solvent was maintained at 83% after 10 adsorption and desorption cycles. The reaction, regeneration, and phase-change mechanism were investigated using 13 C NMR and phase composition analysis. CO 2 reacted with [DMAPA][TZ] to form two kinds of carbamate during solubilization, and all carbamates could be further hydrolyzed to form HCO 3 − and CO 3 2− . The solvent effect, phase-change behavior, and CO 2 physical dissolution of NHD could promote the absorption and desorption rate and absorption capacity of CO 2 . The energy consumption for CO 2 desorption could be reduced to 1.335 GJ·t −1 CO 2 , which was 67% lower than that of 30 wt% ethanolamine (3.99 GJ·t −1 CO 2 ), given the lower heat of reaction, specific heat capacity, and solvent loss. Thus, this solvent presents a sustainable strategy for advancing carbon capture technologies.

Abstract:In this work, we proposed aqueous blends of 2-(diethylamino)-ethanol (DEEA) and monoethanolamine (MEA) or 2-((2-aminoethyl) amino) ethanol (AEEA) as the biphasic solvent for CO2 capture. Aqueous DEEA-AEEA solvent maintained an effective CO2 loading range (0.86-3.15 mol/kg) that gives two phases at 40 ℃. During the two-phase formation, more than 95% of absorbed CO2 concentrated in the lower phase and the weight percentage of the lower phase was found to increase with increased total CO2 loading. Quantitative 13C NMR analysis indicated that AEEA reactions with CO2 dominate at the beginning of CO2 absorption and the reaction products are in forms of carbamates. Then DEEA starts to react with CO2 and the reaction products are bicarbonate and carbonate. Analysis on the phase split behavior indicated that CO2 products of carbamates and HCO3-/CO32- migrated to the lower phase while DEEA and unreacted AEEA migrated to the upper phase.
Reducing the energy penalty and corrosion of carbon dioxide capture using a novel nonaqueous monoethanolamine-based biphasic solvent

Abstract:To advance carbon dioxide (CO2) capture technology by simultaneously reducing the energy penalty and mitigating equipment corrosion, a novel nonaqueous biphasic solvent comprising monoethanolamine (MEA), 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and N,N,N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) was proposed for CO2 capture in this study. The performance testing results demonstrated that the MEA-AMP-DMSO-PMDETA (M-A-D-P) biphasic solvent with the optimal composition could realize a high CO2 loading of 0.88 mol·mol-1 and that its rich phase stored 95.3% of the absorbed CO2 but constituted only 56.8% of the total volume. 13C NMR analysis and quantum chemical calculations showed that both MEA and AMP could absorb CO2 to form carbamate and carbamic acid species, with the latter being the dominant reaction product. Since the products were polar and could form hydrogen bonds with polar DMSO, the two had satisfactory mutual solubility, while less polar PMDETA was isolated, thereby leading to a phase change. After phase separation, only the CO2-rich phase required regeneration. Consequently, M-A-D-P significantly reduced the sensible heat and vaporization heat by 63.1% and 94.8%, respectively, compared to the benchmark MEA solution. Moreover, the results of the corrosion test demonstrated that M-A-D-P was virtually noncorrosive to carbon steel; thus, it clearly outperformed the MEA solution. Therefore, the novel M-A-D-P biphasic solvent may be a promising candidate for advancing energy-efficient and noncorrosive CO2 capture.

Abstract:Amine-based technology is promising for CO 2 capture from the flue gas. However, it encounters high energy penalty and thus hampers its industrial application. Currently, the catalytic solvent regeneration is developing to lower down regeneration temperature, accelerate regeneration rate, and cut down energy consumption for monoethanolamine (MEA)-based process. However, the information on catalytic regeneration of biphasic solvent is seldom available. This work develops a facile synthesized robust catalyst, α-Fe 2 O 3, to promote the biphasic solvent regeneration such as triethylenetetramine (TETA) and 2-(diethylamino) ethanol (DEEA) blend. Experimental results revealed that, with the aid of α-Fe 2 O 3 , the efficient regeneration of TETA-DEEA occurred at 94 o C, which is far below the conventional MEA-based process (110-120 o C). The corresponding CO 2 stripping rate increased by 2.4 times compared with uncatalytic scenario. Furthermore, the relative energy consumption was furtherly decreased by 41.6%. Different from MEA regeneration, the biphasic solvent regeneration with α-Fe 2 O 3 depended on the enhancement of water molecules proton donation rather than the abundant Brønsted acid and Lewis acid of the catalyst. Based on DFT calculation and 13 C NMR spectra analysis, the water molecules on α-Fe 2 O 3 surface and the protonated DEEA were parallel served as proton donors for carbamate decomposition. Consequently, a novel proton transfer mechanism was proposed for the biphasic solvent TETA-DEEA regeneration. The water molecules adsorbed on α-Fe 2 O 3 surface generated oxyhydrogen groups and thus donate protons for the carbamate decomposition. This work proposes a novel proton transfer mechanism for solvent regeneration and advances its industrial application with a low energy penalty.

Abstract:To achieve low regeneration energy consumption and low corrosion, a novel ILs nonaqueous biphasic absorbents composed of Tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) Caprolactam (CPL), Ethylene glycol (EG), and Diethylene glycol dimethyl ether (DGDE) have been proposed for CO2 capture. The maximum CO2 loading of the optimal absorbent ([TEPAH][CPL]/EG/DGDE) could reach 1.88 mol.mol(-1), with 40 % of the saturated phase volume containing 98 % of the mass percentage of CO2 products. Furthermore, the regeneration energy consumption was only 1.88 GJ.t(-1) CO2, approximately 51 % lower than that of 30 wt% monoethanolamine (MEA) aqueous solution. C-13 NMR analysis has shown that the amino group on the cation [TEPAH]+ reacted with CO2 to form CO2 productscarbamate, and the anion [CPL]-assisted the proton transfer during the reaction. Combined with the results from quantum chemical calculation, the phase separation behavior of the absorbent was mainly due to the polarity difference between the CO2 products and the solvent. Additonally, [TEPAH][CPL]/EG/DGDE was non-corrosive to 20# carbon steel before and after CO2 absorption, and exhibited superior stability than MEA aqueous solution.
