Abstract:In this paper, we prove that if (n,q) is such chosen that the outer automorphism groups of PSLn(q) and PSUn(q) are cyclic, PSLn(q) and PSUn(q) satisfy the inductive blockwise Alperin weight condition for any prime ℓ different from the defining characteristic. To do this, it suffices to study actions of automorphisms on the Brauer characters and weights of GLn(q) and GUn(q) for ℓ, and to show that the blockwise bijection between Brauer characters and weights given in [1], [3], [4] and [5] is equivariant.

Abstract:Let 𝒮 be a finite thick generalized quadrangle, and suppose that G is an automorphism group of 𝒮 . If G acts primitively on both the points and lines of 𝒮 , then it is known that G must be almost simple. In this paper, we show that if the socle of G is PSL(2,q) with q≥ 4 , then q=9 and 𝒮 is the unique generalized quadrangle of order 2.

Finite Fields and Their Applications

Abstract:In this paper, we resolve a conjecture of Green and Liebeck (2019) [3] on codes in PGL(2,q). To be specific, we show that: if D is a dihedral subgroup of order 2(q+1) in G=PGL(2,q), and A={g∈G:gq+1=1,g2≠1}, then λG=A⋅D, where λ=q or q−1 according as q is even or odd.

Abstract: Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a finite thick generalized quadrangle, and suppose that $G$ is an automorphism group of $\mathcal{S}$. Abstract:We reduce a case of the hidden subgroup problem (HSP) in SL(2; q), PSL(2; q), and PGL(2; q), three related families of finite groups of Lie type, to efficiently solvable HSPs in the affine group AGL(1; q). These groups act on projective space in an almost 3-transitive way, and we use this fact in each group to distinguish conjugates of its Borel (upper triangular) subgroup, which is also the stabilizer subgroup of an element of projective space. Our observation is mainly group-theoretic, and as such breaks little new ground in quantum algorithms. Nonetheless, these appear to be the first positive results on the HSP in finite simple groups such as PSL(2; q).

Abstract:We show that PSL(2,Z[1/p]) admits a combing with bounded asynchronous width, and use this combing to show that PSL(2,Z[1/p]) has an exponential Dehn function. As a corollary, PSL(2,Z[1/p]) has solvable word problem and is not an automatic group.

To prove Alperin weight conjecture, it suffices to show that all finite non-abelian simple groups are BAW-good. Abstract:The aim of this paper is to confirm an inequality predicted by Isaacs and Navarro in 1995, which asserts that for any $\pi'$-subgroup $Q$ of a $\pi$-separable group $G$, the number of $\pi'$-weights of $G$ with $Q$ as the first component always exceeds that of irreducible $\pi$-partial characters of $G$ with $Q$ as their vertex. We also give some sufficient condition to guarantee that these two numbers are equal, and thereby strengthen their main theorem on the $\pi$-version of the Alperin weight conjecture.

p-Nilpotent maximal subgroups in finite groups

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and suppose that every maximal subgroup of a finite group is either $p$-nilpotent or has prime index. Such group need not be $p$-solvable, and we study its structure by proving that only one nonabelian simple group of order divisible by $p$, which belongs to the family ${\rm PSL}_n(q)$, can be involved in it. For $p=2$, we specify more, and in fact, such simple group must be isomorphic to ${\rm PSL}_2({r^a})$ for certain values of the prime $r$ and the parameter $a$.

Abstract:We obtain formulae for the numbers of isomorphism and conjugacy classes of non-identity proper subgroups of the groups $G={\rm PSL}_2(p)$, $p$ prime, and for the numbers of those conjugacy classes which do or do not consist of self-normalising subgroups. The formulae are used to prove lower bounds $17$, $18$, $6$ and $12$ respectively satisfied by these invariants for all $p>37$. A computer search carried out for a different problem shows that these bounds are attained for over a million primes $p$; we show that if the Bateman--Horn Conjecture is true, they are attained for infinitely many primes. Also, assuming no unproved conjectures, we use a result of Heath-Brown to obtain upper bounds for these invariants, valid for an infinite set of primes $p$.
