Abstract:Due to their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, aliphatic polyesters are widely used in the biomedical, packaging and agricultural fields, which are usually accessed by the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones and the catalysts particularly play an important role. Herein a series of quinolinyl-urea catalysts have been synthesized via the reaction between isocyanate and aminoquinoline with an amino group at different substitution positions and characterized. In combination with 7-methyl-1, 5, 7-triazabicyclo[4,4,0]dec-5-ene (MTBD) as a cocatalyst and benzyl alcohol (BnOH) as an initiator, 1-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3-(quinolin-3-yl)urea (3-QU) was observed to be most active for the ROP of δ-valerolactone (δ-VL). The polymerization conditions were optimized by varying the type of organic base, catalyst concentration and reaction temperature. By changing the ratio of [M]0/[I], linear polyvalerolactones (PVLs) with different molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distribution were prepared. The kinetic and chain extension experiments were carried out to prove the “living”/controllable feature. And the NMR experiments were used to support the proposal of possible mechanism.

Abstract:(Thio)urea/base systems have been widely used in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones based on their superior performance in activity and selectivity. Herein, a pyridyl-urea (6C-PU)/7-methyl-1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene catalytic system is used to prepare the polyesters with cyclic topology via the ROP of lactones in the absence of initiator under solvent-free conditions. The catalytic system shows high activity in the ROP of delta-valerolactone (delta-VL) and cyclic polyvalerolactones (PVLs) with high molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distribution are obtained despite the existence of some linear products generated during the precipitation process. The structure of the resulting polymers is determined by proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry, and intrinsic viscosity studies. A possible mechanism is proposed on the basis of NMR analysis and characteristics of polymerization. Thermal and mechanical properties of cyclic PVLs are investigated through differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and tensile test.

Abstract:The ring-opening copolymerization of epsilon-caprolactone and delta-valerolactone was carried out under solvent-free conditions with a pyridyl-urea (6C-PU)/7-methyl-1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene catalytic system by premixing two monomers, yielding gradient copolyesters with cyclic and linear structures in the absence or presence of an initiator, respectively. The random and block copolyesters of these two monomers were also prepared for comparison. The results of H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra determined the linear and cyclic structure of copolymers. The kinetic experiment was used to determine the consuming rates of two monomers during the polymerization. The topologies and thermal properties of all the copolymers were characterized and compared by NMR and DSC.

Abstract:Quaternary ammonium and phosphonium borane bifunctional catalysts have shown high catalytic performance in ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of epoxides to produce polyether. Herein, we systematically investigate a series of well-defined organoboron catalysts by varying the electronic and steric properties of the Lewis acidic boron (B) centers, manipulating the steric hindrance on the ammonium cation (N+), adjusting the distance between B and N+, and regulating the nucleic B number of the catalysts. The investigation on the dinuclear catalysts indicated that the reactivity of a given catalyst could be speculated by its B- N-B angle and the B center dot center dot center dot B distance. We found that the increase of Lewis acidity and the number of B centers of the organoboron catalysts are useful for a high catalytic activity for ROP of epoxides. The Lewis acidity of the B centers was determined using the acceptor numbers, showing an order of borinane (23.4) > BBN (21.7) > BCy2 (18.8) > Bpin (15.5). Moreover, we demonstrated the production of various telechelic polyols in the presence of different chain transfer agents using the organoboron catalysts. The produced telechelic samples have a well-defined terminal functionality with controllable molecular weight. Lastly, these organoboron catalysts were utilized to produce block copolymers, allyl-terminated macromonomers, and random copolymers.
High‐Activity Organocatalysts for Polyether Synthesis Via Intramolecular Ammonium Cation Assisted SN2 Ring‐Opening Polymerization

Abstract:AbstractThis manuscript describes a kind of bifunctional organocatalyst with unprecedented reactivity for the synthesis of polyethers via ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of epoxides under mild conditions. The bifunctional catalyst incorporates two 9‐borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane centers on the two ends as Lewis acidic sites for epoxide activation and a quaternary ammonium halide in the middle as the initiating site. The catalyst could be easily prepared in two steps from commercially available stocks on up to kilogram scale with ≈100 % yield. The organoboron catalyst mediated ROP of epoxides displays living behavior with low catalyst loading (5 ppm) and enables the synthesis of polyethers with molecular weights of over a million grams per mole (>106 g mol−1). Based on the investigations on crystal structure of catalyst, MALDI‐TOF, and 11B NMR spectroscopy, an intramolecular ammonium cation assisted SN2 mechanism is proposed and verified by DFT calculations.
Sustainable Efficient Synthesis of Pyrrolidones from Levulinic Acid over Pd/C Catalyst

Abstract:The synthesis of 5-methyl-2-pyrrolidone through reductive amination of levulinic acid (LA) with ammonium formate (AF) as a source of both hydrogen and nitrogen over Pd/C catalyst was investigated. The effects of various reaction parameters, such as solvent, catalyst dosage, ammonium formate amount and temperature on the conversion of LA into 5-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (MPD) were systematically investigated. The results showed that a MPD yield as high as 98 % was obtained in water at 180 degrees C for 4 h under a low metal content (0.28 mol% Pd relative to LA), which is higher than many previous reports. The Pd/C catalyst could be reused for at least 9 times with only a slight loss in activity. Meanwhile, Pd/C catalyst was efficient for the conversion of LA/ester into various N-substituted-5-methyl-2-pyrrolidones (80-93 % yield) by using a mixture of formic acid and the corresponding primary amines.

Abstract:Rare earth (RE) catalysts exhibit extremely high catalytic activity in ring-opening polymerization. This work reviews the application of rare earth catalysts in ring-opening polymerizations of lactones, lactides, cyclic ethers, cyclic carbonates and cyclic carboxyanhydrides in the past decade. Compared to other transition metals and main group elements, RE elements have larger cationic radii which allow for higher coordination numbers and more coordination modes, endowing RE catalysts with high catalytic activity. These characteristics not only fuel the widespread use of new RE catalysts in pursuing high molecular weight and polymerization rate of intensively studied monomers, such as epsilon-caprolactone (CL), lactide (LA) and beta-butyllactone (BBL), but also unleash the polymerization of traditionally non-polymerizable gamma-butyrolactone (gamma-BL) and its derivatives. The inherent low strain energy of the five-membered ring imparts monomer recyclability into the corresponding polymer. Furthermore, stereoselective polymerization of racemic monomers can be realized by RE catalysts containing chiral ligands with large steric hindrance. Slight modification of ligands gives rise to tailored or even inverted stereoregularity of polymers. The unique advantages of RE catalysts in the controllability of polymerization process and polymer structure are illustrated by discussing the relationship between catalyst structures and polymerization results. In addition, a novel ring-opening polymerization catalyzed by RE compounds, named Janus polymerization is introduced. This new mechanism combines cationic and anionic polymerizations at two ends of a single propagating chain and thus provides a facile methodology to synthesize polymers with sophisticated chemical structures and topologies in one step. New catalysts and mechanisms of ring-opening polymerizations have attractive potentiality in begetting new materials.

Herein, a new class of hydrogen‐bond donating bisurea catalysts is reported for the ROP of lactones under solvent‐free conditions. ROP of lactones mediated by the bisurea/7‐methyl‐1,5,7‐triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec‐5‐ene (MTBD) catalyst exhibits a living/controlled manner, affording the polymers and copolymers with the well‐defined structure, predictable molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution, and high selectivity for monomer at low catalyst loadings at ambient temperature. The possible mechanism of bisurea/MTBD‐catalyzed ROP of lactones is proposed, in which the bisurea activates the carbonyl group of lactones while MTBD facilitates the nucleophilic attack of the initiating/propagating alcohol by hydrogen bonding. Moreover, the poly(ε‐caprolactone‐co‐δ‐valerolactone) [P(CL‐co‐VL)] random copolymers with various compositions were synthesized using the bisurea/MTBD catalyst. Advancing H-Bonding Organocatalysis for Ring-Opening Polymerization: Intramolecular Activation of Initiator/Chain End

Abstract:Organocatalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones is a green method for accessing renewable and biodegradable polyesters. Developing new organocatalysts with high activity and controllability is a major and challenging research topic in this field. Here, we report a series of organocatalysts to achieve a fast and controlled ROP of lactones. These catalysts incorporate (thio)urea and alkoxide in one molecule and act as initiators in the ROP. Such catalysts enable an effective intramolecular activation of initiator/chain end, as revealed by computational studies, resulting in higher activity and fewer (thio)urea loads than existing (thio)urea/alkoxide binary systems. These organocatalysts exhibit ultrahigh activity comparable to metal complexes, i.e., turnover number up to 900 and turnover of frequency up to 4860 min-1, affording polyesters with tailor-made structure, predicted molecular weights, narrow dispersity, less epimerization, and minimal transesterification. The catalyst synthesis is simple and scalable, allowing widely tuned activities of the ROP.

Abstract:Highly potent ionic organocatalyst is developed for room-temperature controlled ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones, including δ -valerolactone, ε -caprolactone, and δ -hexalactone. The catalysts are prepared by simply mixing tetra- n -butyl ammonium hydroxide and a (thio)urea at elevated temperature under vacuum, and used in cooperation with an alcoholic initiator. The performance of the catalyst is readily adjusted and optimized through variation of the (thio)urea precursor, catalyst composition, and reaction condition. Urea-derived catalysts are generally superior to thiourea-derived ones. Provided with proper N -substituents, the catalyst affords both high polymerization efficiency and high selectivity for monomer enchainment over macromolecular transesterification, even at high monomer conversion and/or substantially extended reaction time. In addition to acidity, structural symmetry of the urea also proves decisive for the catalytic activity, which enables a catalyst-assisted proton transfer process for the ring-opening of lactone and thus provides a novel mechanistic insight for ROP catalyzed by hydrogen-bonding type bifunctional ionic organocatalysts.

Abstract:A series of heterogeneous Zn-Co double metal cyanide (DMC) catalysts were investigated for ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of various cyclic monomers. Notably, inexpensive and commonly used organic solvents such as acetone, N,N-dimethylacetamide, N,N-dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, nitromethane, and 1-methylpyrrolidin-2-one were very effective complexing agents for the preparation of DMC catalysts, showing high catalytic activity for the ROP of propylene oxide, ε-caprolactone, and δ-valerolactone. The chemical structures and compositions of the resultant catalysts were determined using various techniques such as FT-IR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and elemental analysis. α,ω-Hydroxyl-functionalized polyether and polyester polyols with high yields and tunable molecular weights were synthesized in the presence of various initiators to control functionality. Kinetic studies of the ROP of δ-valerolactone were also performed to confirm the reaction mechanism.

Abstract:A highly active and chemoselective ionic organocatalyst is developed for room-temperature living/controlled ring-opening polymerization of lactide. The catalysts are prepared by a simple dehydration reaction between tetra-n-butyl ammonium hydroxide and an N,N'-diarylurea and used in cooperation with hydroxy initiators. Typically, poly(L-lactide) with near perfect isotacticity and widely tunable molar mass (4-130 kg mol(-1)) can be produced in <2 min (turnover frequency up to 120 000 h(-1)). Low molar mass distribution is observed in both short and substantially extended reaction times, clearly demonstrating the selectivity of catalyst for monomer enchainment over macromolecular transesterification. Versatile design and construction of diverse polylactide-based macromolecular structures are allowed thanks to the livingness of the polymerization and independence of initiator and catalyst. In addition to the hydrogen bond donor-acceptor type bifunctional activation mechanism, direct nucleophilic attack of the urea anion on the monomer and polymer is also shown which can be suppressed by the added hydroxy initiator.

Abstract:Two Fe(II) complexes bearing chelating monoanionic [N,N]− pyridylamido ligands with bulky 2,6-dialkylphenyl substituents at both the amido and the ortho-pyridine moieties were synthesized and characterized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the formation of heteroleptic mononuclear [N,N]FeIIN(SiMe3)2 three-coordinated complexes. The two complexes were tested as catalysts for the Ring Opening Polymerization (ROP) of l-lactide (L-LA) and ε-caprolactone (CL) in the presence of 1 equiv. of alcohol co-initiator, resulting in high activity under both mild conditions (in solution at room temperature and low monomer/catalyst ratio) and more industrially relevant conditions (higher temperature and high monomer/catalyst ratio). The high activity and living character of the Fe(II) catalysts allowed the synthesis of stereo-multiblock polylactides by one-pot sequential addition of l-LA, d-LA and rac-LA at room temperature and in short reaction times, as well as the synthesis of di-block PCL-b-PLLA and three-block PLLA-b-PCL-b-PLLA copolymers by a similar approach.

Abstract:Polydicyclopentadiene (PDCPD) is a kind of high-performance thermoset resin widely used in industry. Herein, we report a liquid ruthenium metathesis catalyst, soluble in dicyclopentadiene. As a result, solvents used in traditional Ru-based catalytic systems can be avoided, simplifying the process of ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of dicyclopentadiene. This reported catalyst shows high activity in the ROMP reaction and desirable stability in air. PDCPD samples cured by this catalyst show increase in mechanical properties and Tg value, compared with those cured by Grubbs 2nd generation catalyst. This work laid a solid foundation for the industrial use of Ru-based metathesis catalysts in polymerization.

Abstract:A highly efficient late-transition metal based catalytic system of α-diimine FeCl3 for well-controlled ring opening polymerization of a cheap and biobased macrolactone, ethylene brassylate (EB), is described herein. Proceeding via a coordination-insertion mechanism, such a catalytic system is capable of demonstrating unprecedently higher activities than previously reported organo-catalyst or main-group metal based catalysts. Moreover, benefiting from the bulky nature of the α-diimine ligands, transesterification side reactions can be greatly suppressed, allowing the polymerization proceeding in a well-controlled living manner, as revealed from detailed kinetic studies. Additionally, such a catalytic system was also workable for ring opening copolymerization of EB and ε-caprolactone (CL), giving desired random copolymers with various compositions.

Abstract:Model reactions for the 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP)-catalyzed ring-opening polymerization of lactide and the corresponding lactic O-carboxylic anhydride (lacOCA) have been studied computationally at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory. The solvent effect of dichloromethane was taken into account through PCM/SCRF single-point calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory. In marked contrast with that predicted for the reaction of alcohols with acetic anhydride, the mechanism in which nucleophilic activation of the monomer involving acylpyridinium intermediates was found to be energetically less favorable than the base activation of the alcohol through hydrogen bonding. The concerted pathway for the ring-opening of lactide and lacOCA was shown to compete with the traditional stepwise mechanism involving tetrahedral intermediates. Furthermore, DMAP is proposed to act as a bifunctional catalyst through its basic nitrogen center and an acidic ortho-hydrogen atom.
