Abstract:A (salen)Mn(III) complex was used as a biomimetic surrogate of the metallocofactor of phenol-oxidizing enzymes, in combination with chiral phosphoric acid relay catalysis, enabling an enantioselective direct oxidative phenol-indole [3 + 2] coupling reaction to access structurally diverse chiral benzofuroindolines. Differing from previous methods that exclusively make use of isolatable quinones or their imines, this system is capable of harnessing transient N-Boc quinone imines, and highlights its synthetic potential with high enantioselectivities, high step and atom economy, benign reaction conditions, and remarkable catalytic turnover for chiral phosphoric acid (CPA) (low to 0.01 mol %; up to 4100 turnover number (TON)).

Abstract:A photocatalyzed oxidative dehydrogenative annulation between 2-(1H-indol-2-yl)phenols and alkenylphenols is presented. Various indole-fused benzoxepines can be obtained at room temperature using atom-efficient strategies. This method not only avoids the use of stoichiometric amounts of oxidants but also exhibits excellent atom economy by generating H(2)O as the only theoretical byproduct.

Abstract:A facile and direct intramolecular oxidative C(aryl)-H amidation reaction was developed for the synthesis of quinolino[3,4-b]quinoxalin-6(5H)-ones in moderate to excellent yields starting from readily available materials by tethering the adjacent N-methoxyamide and aryl portions in the presence of phenyliodine(III) bis(trifluoroacetate) at room temperature. This metal-free approach is a valuable addition to the traditional methods already available for the preparation of these molecules.

Abstract:An efficient [bis-(trifluoroacetoxy)iodo]benzene (PIFA)-mediated oxidative C-N bond formation is developed for the synthesis of 1H-indazoles from readily available arylhydrazones. The reaction tolerates a wide range of functional groups and has broad scope of substrates. Moreover, this method is a relative green and reliable method for rapid preparation of substituted 1H-indazoles under mild conditions.

Abstract:A concise and environmentally friendly protocol was developed for the synthesis of 6-phenylbenzo[h]quinolines. 6-Phenylbenzo[h]quinolines were obtained in good yields via irradiation of (E)-2-phenyl-3-styrylpyridines with a 254 nm UV light (64 W) in EtOH under an argon atmosphere in the presence of TFA. The reaction is a dehydrogenative annulation reaction that proceeds through 6π-electrocyclization, a [1,5]-H shift, 1,3-enamine tautomerization, and elimination of a hydrogen molecule to afford 6-phenylbenzo[h]quinolines. The described protocol not only avoids the usage of a transition metal catalyst and an oxidant but also has the advantages of high atom efficiency and mild reaction conditions.

Abstract:Herein we develop a novel micellar catalytic system based on amphiphilic bifunctional iodide salts for oxidative intramolecular alpha-oxygenation and alpha-amination of carbonyl substrates in water, thus enabling a unified and benign synthesis of various 2-oxindoles containing spirotetrahydrobenzofurans, spiroisochromanones, spiroindolines and spirolactones. Notably, the terminal oxidant H2O2 produced water as the only by-product. The excellent recyclability of the aqueous medium containing the catalyst further highlights the synthetic utility of this system.

Abstract:An efficient, atom-economic and one-pot synthesis of isoindolo[2,1-a]indol-6-ones via CuI/Pd(OAc)2-catalyzed intramolecular hydroamidation of alkynyl group, and C-H dehydrogenative coupling of ortho-alkynyl-N-arylbenzamides has been developed. This transformation occurs with the use of oxygen as the oxidant, and water is the only by-product. The reaction shows a high tolerance to a variety of functional groups, and affords isoindolo[2,1-a]indol-6-ones in good to high yields.

Abstract:A highly effective and straightforward method to construct a wide range of functionalized 2,3-disubstituted indoles has been developed. The method involves the tandem reaction of rhodium(II)-catalyzed denitrogenative annulation of triazole-based benzyl anilines and oxygen-mediated oxidative aromatization. The developed method can also be used to synthesize 2,3-disubstituted benzofurans by replacing the benzyl anilines with benzyl phenols.

Abstract:A facile and efficient method for the synthesis of novel 2-substituted 4-tosyl-4,5-dihydrooxazolo[5,4-c]isoquinolines from 4-diazoisoquinolin-3-ones and nitriles is reported. The reaction proceeded through a TfOH-promoted formal [3 + 2] cycloaddition and the products could be conveniently converted to 2-aryloxazolo[5,4-c]isoquinolines and the subsequent 2-(oxazolo[5,4-c]isoquinolin-2-yl)phenol which emitted bright green light in dilute dichloromethane solution and in solid form as well. Simple operation, metal-free and mild reaction conditions, short reaction time and broad substrate scope are the prominent features of this methodology.

Abstract:A novel protocol for the construction of multiple-substituted 4-hydroxyisoindoline-1,3-diones through I2-mediated multicomponent cascade reaction has been described. This metal-free process involves the formation of three C-C bonds and one C-O bond with easily available raw materials in one pot, affording highly functionalized maleimide-fused phenols with structural diversity in satisfactory yields. 18O-labeling experiments have revealed that oxygen atom of the hydroxyl group was derived from water. In addition, a variety of further transformations have showcased the practicality and the utility of the methodology.
