Abstract:Creeping solitons, which belong to the class of pulsating solitons, can be meaningful for fundamental physics owing to their fruitful nonlinear dynamics. Their characteristics in mode-locked lasers have been studied theoretically, but it is difficult to experimentally observe evolution dynamics in real time. Here, we have experimentally observed the temporal and spectral evolution dynamics of creeping solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber laser by employing time-lens and dispersive Fourier transform technique. With the aid of Raman amplification, the measured recording length of the time lens in the asynchronous mode could be substantially improved. Temporal soliton snaking motion and spectral breathing dynamics are experimentally obtained, confirming intrinsic feature of pulsation dynamics. These results display how single-shot measurements can offer new insights into ultrafast transient dynamics in nonlinear optics.

Abstract:We present an experimental observation of pulsating solitons with central wavelength oscillation in an ultrafast fiber laser. The spectral features of the solitons are identified by virtue of the dispersive Fourier transform technique. In this pulsating regime, the central wavelength of output solitons exhibits periodic redshift and blueshift, and the positions of their Kelly sidebands oscillate synchronously with the solitons. The corresponding field autocorrelation traces show that the pulse duration changes periodically. In addition, soliton snaking motion is observed in the temporal domain. Depending on the pump level, an intermittent pulsating state is found in the fiber laser operating in a transition regime between pulsating and stationary mode-locking states, where the quasi-stationary and energy-modulated solitons appear alternatively. Our results would stimulate further investigation of the pulsating dynamics in ultrafast fiber lasers.

Abstract:Ultrafast fiber lasers, as the soliton pulse sources, offer great platforms for the investigations of soliton dynamics. Since both the coherent and incoherent spectral sidebands could be shown on the soliton spectrum, herein we proposed a method to identify them by using the dispersion Fourier transformation (DFT) technique. According to the principle of DFT technology, for the coherent spectral sidebands, that is, Kelly sidebands in the mode-locked fiber laser, they could be mapped to the temporal waveforms after the DFT process. However, the incoherent spectral sidebands, namely continuous waves, would disappear on the shot-to-shot spectra after DFT due to their uncertain phase relation. The obtained results would deepen our understanding of spectral sidebands.

Abstract:Passively mode-locked fiber lasers, which have been widely utilized to generate ultrashort pulses in the femtosecond level, can be regarded as the next-generation laser source due to the advantages of high beam quality, high efficiency, etc. On the other hand, ultrafast mode-locking fiber lasers can provide an excellent platform for observing a variety of nonlinear dynamics. Although some steady state phenomena had been observed theoretically and experimentally, many interesting and important transient dynamics properties can only be theoretically predicted, and some are unpredictable. The main reason is that these ultrafast nonlinear dynamics are unrepeatable and have complex transformation in temporal and spectral domain, which cannot be resolved by the current technologies. In recent years, researchers have proposed time-stretched dispersive Fourier transform (TS-DFT) technique [1]-[6] to measure the transient, nonrepeat events. This technique can map the spectral information of optical waves into the time domain, thus provide an elegant way to obtain real-time, single-shot spectrum measurements of ultrafast optical phenomena. Up to now, this technique has helped scientists to experimentally resolve the entire formation dynamics [2], [3] and localized transient dynamics of solitons in mode-locked fiber lasers [4]-[6]. Besides, a temporal magnifier technique, also known as time lens, was employed to microimaging the ultrafast phenomena in recent years. This technique has been successfully applied to study the real-time full-field characterization of soliton dynamics in mode-locked laser [7], [8].

Abstract:This study employs real-time Fourier transform spectroscopy to investigate the pulsation dynamics of soliton molecules in a mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser, utilizing pump intensity modulation. By manipulating the driving voltage of the pump source, we systematically observe and characterize the impact of external modulation signals on the amplitude, period, pulsation frequency, and the relative phase evolution among the pulsating soliton molecules within their spectra.The results demonstrate that, under specific conditions of pump intensity modulation, the pulsation period of soliton molecule spectra can be precisely regulated by the pump modulation frequency. Concurrently, the amplitude of soliton molecule pulsations and the evolution of relative phase among the solitons are intricately tied to the pump modulation frequency. At lower modulation frequencies, such as 1 kHz, the relative phase among the pulses within the soliton molecule exhibits a sliding-type dynamics as a function of propagation time.As the modulation frequency gradually increases, e.g., to 5 kHz, a scenario emerges where three soliton molecules are generated. Notably, both the soliton spacing and relative phase undergo synchronous adjustments influenced by the pump modulation. With further escalation of the modulation frequency, such as to 20 kHz, the relative phase evolution among the pulses within the soliton molecule gradually descends into chaos. This observation suggests the plausible existence of an inherent resonant frequency associated with pulsating soliton molecules, which has direct implications for their stability.The findings of this research hold significant relevance for advancing our comprehension of soliton molecule generation and enhancing their stability. Furthermore, they offer valuable insights into the broader domain of all-optical manipulation and applications of soliton molecules, as well as their utilization in pulse encoding within mode-locked laser systems.

Abstract:Nonlinear dissipative systems support pulsating solutions and exhibit many interesting dynamic behaviors. Here, we report various soliton pulsations and explosions in an all-normal dispersion ytterbium-doped fiber laser by utilizing the dispersive Fourier transform technique. By the different soliton dynamics, these phenomena can be classified into single-soliton pulsation and explosion, dual-soliton synchronous and asynchronous pulsation, as well as dual-soliton asynchronous explosion. Solitons exhibit identical periodic fluctuations in the synchronous pulsation while showing the anti-phase behavior in asynchronous pulsation. The dual-soliton asynchronous pulsation might be related to the periodic modulation of the polarization state of solitons. As for the dual-soliton asynchronous explosion, it can be regarded as the asynchronously triggered transient solitons containing periodic explosion through the gain-mediated soliton interactions. These findings may provide new insights into complex dynamics in the field of ultrafast lasers.

Abstract:It is investigated the adiabatic compression of picosecond soliton pulses from a DFB laser operating at 1550nm in the fibers with slowly decreasing dispersion (FSDD).High-quality soliton compression from 4.4 ps down to 830 fs in a 500m (FSDD) is obtained.The compression factor is about 5.3.Experimental results show that nonlinear pulse propagation in FSDD can provide a novel method to generate ultrashort pulses.

Abstract:Abstract We experimentally investigated the soliton collisions between soliton molecules and deuterogenic solitons spontaneously generated on the continuous wave (cw) noise background in an ultrafast erbium-doped fiber laser mode locked with MoS2 saturable absorber (SA). The dynamics of the soliton collisions were observed using the time-stretch dispersion Fourier transform technique. The noise-induced deuterogenic solitons first undergo spectral broadening and wavelength shifting, then collide successively with a soliton molecule and eventually vanish. Within the simple collision framework, the spectral-temporal dynamics of soliton collision would help to unveil the self-stabilization mechanism of the soliton molecules in consideration of dispersive wave shedding. This nonlinear dynamics is similar to the soliton rain, except that complex condensed soliton phase is substituted with a soliton molecule.

Abstract:Because of the complexity and difficulty of realizing a multi-wavelength soliton state, reports on its internal dynamic characteristics are scarce. In this study, the switching and periodic soliton explosion processes of the multi-wavelength soliton state in a negative dispersion passively mode-locked fiber laser are realized. The generation of the multi-wavelength soliton state undergoes the process of noise, oscillation, and stable mode-locking, and the splitting and annihilation of solitons with different group velocities directly impact the generation and disappearance of three wavelengths. Positive and negative dispersion lead to different group velocities of solitons. The presence and displacement of solitons with different group velocities cause soliton collisions, which lead to soliton explosions. A soliton experiences relative phase oscillation, chaos, and oscillation, as well as convergence and separation before and after an explosion. With an increase in parameters related to pump power, single-soliton oscillation, multi-wavelength solitons, and chaos are found in experiments and simulations, proving the relevance and reliability between simulation and experimental results. This work promotes the dynamical study of multi-soliton collisions in nonlinear science and the development of chaos theory in multi-comb lasers.

Abstract:Apart from stationary solitons originating from wave self-organization in ultrafast lasers, pulsating solitons have attracted lots of research interest due to their fantastic evolutionary behaviors, whose mechanisms are commonly dominated by dissipative effects such as gain, loss, and spectral filtering. Here, we demonstrate the trampolinelike pulsating soliton in the laser resonator originating from the conservative effects, i.e., Kerr effect and dispersion. It is found that the overdriven self-phase modulation induces the peak-to-dip transformation in the spectral domain, which is terminated by nonlinear spectral focusing due to the interplay between cross-phase modulation and anomalous dispersion. Such dynamic competition between the spectral broadening and focusing leads to the quasiperiodic peak-dip alternation with roundtrips like the trampoline game. A slow pulsation coexists with the trampolinelike fast pulsation due to the long-term soliton shaping. The simulation validates well experimental observations, fully revealing the underlying mechanism of the trampolinelike pulsating soliton. Having the potential to control laser stability, our results also show that the interplay between the Kerr effect and anomalous dispersion within laser cavities can trigger diverse transient phenomena in addition to the well-studied conventional soliton and modulation instability. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.104.023503 ©2021 American Physical Society

Abstract:Temporal solitons have been the focus of much research due to their fascinating physical properties. These solitons can form bound states, which are fundamentally crucial modes in fiber laser and present striking analogies with their matter molecules counterparts, which means they have potential applications in large-capacity transmission and all-optical information storage. Although traditionally, second-order dispersion has been the dominant dispersion for conventional solitons, recent experimental and theoretical research has shown that pure-high-even-order dispersion (PHEOD) solitons with energy-width scaling can arise from the interaction of arbitrary negative-even-order dispersion and Kerr nonlinearity. Despite these advancements, research on the bound states of PHEOD solitons is currently non-existent. In this study, we obtained PHEOD bound solitons in a fiber laser using an intra-cavity spectral pulse shaper for high-order dispersion management. Specifically, we experimentally demonstrate the existence of PHEOD solitons and PHEOD bound solitons with pure-quartic, -sextic, -octic, and -decic dispersion. Numerical simulations corroborate these experimental observations. Furthermore, vibrating phase PHEOD bound soliton pairs, sliding phase PHEOD bound soliton pairs, and hybrid phase PHEOD bound tri-soliton are discovered and characterized. These results broaden the fundamental understanding of solitons and show the universality of multi-soliton patterns.

Abstract:Ultrafast fiber lasers play important roles in many aspects of our life for their various applications in fields ranging from fundamental sciences to industrial purposes. Passive mode-locking technique is a key step to realize the ultrafast soliton fiber lasers. However, the booting dynamics of the soliton fiber lasers have not yet been well understood. Herein, we reveal the soliton buildup dynamics of ultrafast fiber lasers operating both in anomalous and net-normal dispersion regimes. Based on the advanced experimental methodologies of spatio-temporal reconstruction and dispersive Fourier transform (DFT), the soliton booting dynamics are analyzed in the time and spectral domains. It was found that the booting dynamics of conventional and dissipative solitons operating in the anomalous and net-normal dispersion regimes, respectively, are different from each other due to the different pulse shaping mechanisms. In particular, the spectral interference pattern with strong relaxation oscillation behavior was observed near the mode-locking transition for conventional soliton, while no relaxation oscillation of spectral pattern was obtained for dissipative soliton. We firstly revealed that the spectral pattern distributions are induced by the transient structured soliton formation during the pulse shaping from the noise background. The experimental results were verified by the theoretical simulations. The obtained results would provide a general guideline for understanding the soliton booting dynamics in ultrafast fiber lasers, and will prove to be fruitful to the various communities interested in solitons and fiber lasers.

Abstract:The single-shot spectral dynamics of dual-color-soliton collisions inside a mode-locked laser is experimentally and numerically investigated. By using the all-optically dispersive Fourier transform, we spectrally unveil the collision-induced soliton self-reshaping process, which features dynamic spectral fringes over the soliton main lobe, and the rebuilding of Kelly sidebands with wavelength drifting. Meanwhile, the numerical simulations validate the experimental observation and provide additional insights into the physical mechanism of the collision-induced spectral dynamics from the temporal domain perspective. It is verified that the dynamic interference between the soliton and the dispersive waves is responsible for the observed collision-induced spectral evolution. These dynamic phenomena not only demonstrate the role of dispersive waves in the sophisticated soliton interaction inside the laser cavity, but also facilitate a deeper understanding of the soliton's inherent stability.

Abstract:Optical solitons in ultrafast fiber lasers, as a result of dual balances between dispersion and nonlinearity as well as gain and loss, enable various soliton interactions. Soliton collisions are among the most intriguing soliton interactions, which fuel the understanding for particle-like properties of solitons. Here, we experimentally investigate the transient dynamics of collisions between a two-soliton molecule and a soliton singlet in a mode-locked fiber laser. By means of the dispersive Fourier transform technique, the evolving spectral interferograms of different collision scenarios are measured in real time. In particular, the "quasi-elastic" collision is observed, which shows that the soliton-molecule state remains unaltered after the collision and the group-velocity difference between the soliton molecule and the singlet is changed. It is directly demonstrated that a bond exchange occurs between the colliding solitons. By tuning the intra-cavity polarization controller, the dynamic processes of other collision outcomes, including the annihilation of a soliton in the soliton molecule as well as the formation of a stable unequally spaced soliton triplet, are also revealed. Our work facilitates a deeper understanding of soliton collision dynamics in ultrafast fiber lasers.
