Abstract:Creeping solitons, which belong to the class of pulsating solitons, can be meaningful for fundamental physics owing to their fruitful nonlinear dynamics. Their characteristics in mode-locked lasers have been studied theoretically, but it is difficult to experimentally observe evolution dynamics in real time. Here, we have experimentally observed the temporal and spectral evolution dynamics of creeping solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber laser by employing time-lens and dispersive Fourier transform technique. With the aid of Raman amplification, the measured recording length of the time lens in the asynchronous mode could be substantially improved. Temporal soliton snaking motion and spectral breathing dynamics are experimentally obtained, confirming intrinsic feature of pulsation dynamics. These results display how single-shot measurements can offer new insights into ultrafast transient dynamics in nonlinear optics.

Abstract:We experimentally studied the transition dynamics between consecutive multi-pulsing states, specifically the build-up and annihilation of soliton pulses between a double pulsing and a three-pulse state, utilizing the dispersive Fourier transform technique. The birth of an additional pulse in a mode-locked soliton fiber laser in a multi-pulsing regime arises from a dispersive wave-induced narrow-band pulse that experiences strong intensity fluctuations, while the other soliton pulses maintain their shapes. During the decaying process to a double pulsing state, it is observed that all the pulses undergo a unique breathing behavior before settling into a steady state.

Abstract:The buildup dynamics from noise-seeded relaxation oscillation to harmonic mode-locking (HML) solitons generation have been well investigated in ultrafast fiber lasers. However, the transient multi-soliton dynamics in higher-order HML states are still attractive yet largely unexplored. We reveal here that, the experimental observation of the multi-soliton dynamics including soliton beating dynamics, soliton annihilation, transient bound state, two-soliton resonance state, soliton splitting, and multi-soliton repulsion dynamics are analyzed by the emerging time-stretched dispersive Fourier transform (TS-DFT) technique. Particularly, the excessive intracavity energy result in the double-pulse pulsating with transient bound states and three types of soliton molecules states can be observed in the earlier and middle part of the transition process. Numerical results further reveal that several similar multi-soliton dynamics operating at stable 2nd and 3rd states could be caused by a fine tuning of the pump power level in a hybrid mode-locked laser. Our results unveil a diverse set of ultrafast transient process in fiber lasers, and open up new ways into obtaining and controlling the generation of high-repetition-rate ultrashort pulses in fiber lasers.

Abstract:We present an experimental observation of pulsating solitons with central wavelength oscillation in an ultrafast fiber laser. The spectral features of the solitons are identified by virtue of the dispersive Fourier transform technique. In this pulsating regime, the central wavelength of output solitons exhibits periodic redshift and blueshift, and the positions of their Kelly sidebands oscillate synchronously with the solitons. The corresponding field autocorrelation traces show that the pulse duration changes periodically. In addition, soliton snaking motion is observed in the temporal domain. Depending on the pump level, an intermittent pulsating state is found in the fiber laser operating in a transition regime between pulsating and stationary mode-locking states, where the quasi-stationary and energy-modulated solitons appear alternatively. Our results would stimulate further investigation of the pulsating dynamics in ultrafast fiber lasers.

Abstract:In mode-locked fiber lasers, the formation of ultrashort pulses from noisy or unstable states is a crucial area of research. Investigating these complex nonlinear dynamics can lead to valuable insights and new practical engineering techniques, particularly for the design and optimization of optical systems. Time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform, utilized in our study to investigate dissipative solitons formation in a net-normal dispersion nonlinear polarization evolution mode-locked fiber laser, provides a window into the intricate dynamics of such systems. In our experiments, the identification of five distinct transient stages in the formation process sheds light on the underlying mechanisms of dissipative soliton (DS) formation. The five distinct transient stages involved in the formation process include relaxation oscillation, modulation instability, spectral broadening, soliton explosions (SEs), and stable mode-locking. Notably, we also observed the generation of dissipative rogue waves during the SE stage. Our findings shed light on the intricate dynamics of DS formation and offer valuable insights for the design and optimization of mode-locked fiber lasers.

Abstract:Passively mode-locked fiber lasers, which have been widely utilized to generate ultrashort pulses in the femtosecond level, can be regarded as the next-generation laser source due to the advantages of high beam quality, high efficiency, etc. On the other hand, ultrafast mode-locking fiber lasers can provide an excellent platform for observing a variety of nonlinear dynamics. Although some steady state phenomena had been observed theoretically and experimentally, many interesting and important transient dynamics properties can only be theoretically predicted, and some are unpredictable. The main reason is that these ultrafast nonlinear dynamics are unrepeatable and have complex transformation in temporal and spectral domain, which cannot be resolved by the current technologies. In recent years, researchers have proposed time-stretched dispersive Fourier transform (TS-DFT) technique [1]-[6] to measure the transient, nonrepeat events. This technique can map the spectral information of optical waves into the time domain, thus provide an elegant way to obtain real-time, single-shot spectrum measurements of ultrafast optical phenomena. Up to now, this technique has helped scientists to experimentally resolve the entire formation dynamics [2], [3] and localized transient dynamics of solitons in mode-locked fiber lasers [4]-[6]. Besides, a temporal magnifier technique, also known as time lens, was employed to microimaging the ultrafast phenomena in recent years. This technique has been successfully applied to study the real-time full-field characterization of soliton dynamics in mode-locked laser [7], [8].

Abstract:We report on the first experimental observation, to the best of our knowledge, of soliton molecules in a spatiotemporal mode-locked multimode fiber (MMF) laser. By adjusting the waveplates inside the cavity, not only the spatiotemporal mode-locking state with a stable single pulse but also soliton molecules are observed. Various soliton molecules, including soliton pairs, soliton triplets, and soliton quartets with different pulse separations, are achieved. Transition of different operation states with pump power is given. The results would be beneficial for further understanding of the nonlinear dynamics in spatiotemporal mode-locked MMF lasers. Abstract:Various pulse regimes have been discovered in mode-locked fiber lasers with carefully designed cavity setups. However, the transitions between different types of stable pulse solutions are rarely observed in a laser with the same cavity configuration. Here, we report on the experimental observation of the transformation from stretched pulses (SPs) to dissipative solitons (DSs) in an all-polarization-maintaining dispersion-managed mode-locked Yb fiber laser for the first time. By means of the time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform technique, the temporal and spectral dynamics of transient behaviors from pulse breaking to pulse recovering are identified in real time. It is revealed that the overdriven nonlinear effect induced by pump increase triggers the wave breaking of SPs, and the improved net-cavity dispersion originated from wavelength shift helps the self-recovering of DSs. Numerical simulations validate the experimental observations and bring insights to the understanding of transient nonlinear dynamics in ultrafast fiber lasers.

Abstract:This study employs real-time Fourier transform spectroscopy to investigate the pulsation dynamics of soliton molecules in a mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser, utilizing pump intensity modulation. By manipulating the driving voltage of the pump source, we systematically observe and characterize the impact of external modulation signals on the amplitude, period, pulsation frequency, and the relative phase evolution among the pulsating soliton molecules within their spectra.The results demonstrate that, under specific conditions of pump intensity modulation, the pulsation period of soliton molecule spectra can be precisely regulated by the pump modulation frequency. Concurrently, the amplitude of soliton molecule pulsations and the evolution of relative phase among the solitons are intricately tied to the pump modulation frequency. At lower modulation frequencies, such as 1 kHz, the relative phase among the pulses within the soliton molecule exhibits a sliding-type dynamics as a function of propagation time.As the modulation frequency gradually increases, e.g., to 5 kHz, a scenario emerges where three soliton molecules are generated. Notably, both the soliton spacing and relative phase undergo synchronous adjustments influenced by the pump modulation. With further escalation of the modulation frequency, such as to 20 kHz, the relative phase evolution among the pulses within the soliton molecule gradually descends into chaos. This observation suggests the plausible existence of an inherent resonant frequency associated with pulsating soliton molecules, which has direct implications for their stability.The findings of this research hold significant relevance for advancing our comprehension of soliton molecule generation and enhancing their stability. Furthermore, they offer valuable insights into the broader domain of all-optical manipulation and applications of soliton molecules, as well as their utilization in pulse encoding within mode-locked laser systems.

Abstract:We experimentally investigated the transition dynamics between 2nd and 3rd harmonic mode-locking states using the dispersive Fourier transform technology in a hybrid mode-locked fiber laser. Keeping the pump power unchanged and adjusting polarization controller to change intracavity-loss-dependent gain profile and the spectral filtering effect, a set of soliton dynamics induced by soliton interaction are revealed before the soliton splitting. Solitons undergo similar oscillation behaviors during the reverse decay process of the harmonic mode-locking order until one of the solitons disappears. In these transient dynamics, a significant wavelength shift phenomenon could be observed in the transition process of harmonic orders. The numerical results further show that intracavity spectral filtering effects play key role in the harmonic order transition dynamics process, consistent with experimental results. It provides new insights into the evolution and dynamics behavior in harmonic mode-locked soliton order conversion and its potential applications.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal mode locking is a nonlinear process of multimode soliton self-organization. Here the real-time buildup dynamics of the multiple solitons in a spatiotemporal mode-locked multimode fiber laser are investigated, assisted by the time-stretch technique. We find that the buildup processes are transverse mode dependent, especially during the stages of relaxation oscillation and Q -switching prior to multiple soliton formation. Furthermore, we observe that the transverse modal composition of these generated pulses among the multiple solitons can be different from each other, indicating the spatiotemporal structure of the multiple soliton. A simplified theoretical model based on pulse energy evolution is put forward to interpret the role of 3D saturable absorber on spatiotemporal structures of spatiotemporal mode-locking multiple solitons. Our work has presented the spatiotemporal nonlinear dynamics in multimode fiber lasers, which are novel to those inside the single transverse mode fiber lasers. © 2021 Chinese Laser Press

Dynamics of soliton explosions in passively mode-locked fiber lasers

Abstract:A soliton explosion is an instability whereby a dissipative soliton undergoes a sudden structural collapse, but remarkably returns back to its original shape after a short transient. We recently reported the first experimental observation of this effect in a fiber laser (A. F. J. Runge et al., Optica 2, 36 (2015)). Here, we expand on our initial work, presenting a more detailed experimental and numerical study of the characteristics and dynamics of soliton explosions in passively mode-locked fiber lasers. Specifically, we explore different cavity configurations and gain levels, observing and characterizing explosion events using spectral and temporal real-time single-shot techniques. Our results highlight that the explosion characteristics observed in experiments depend critically on the position in the cavity where the output coupler is located. Furthermore, we find that the frequency at which explosions occur can be controlled by adjusting the pump power. We also identify a new kind of ``partial'' explosion, where strong spectral interference fringes appear on the pulse spectra, but a full collapse is avoided. Finally, we perform numerical simulations based on a realistic iterative cavity map, and obtain results that are in good agreement with experimental measurements. Careful analysis of the simulation results provide strong credence to the interpretation that soliton explosions can be linked to a multi-pulsing instability.

Abstract:We show, experimentally and numerically, that a mode-locked fiber laser can operate in a regime where two dissipative soliton solutions coexist and the laser will periodically switch between the solutions. The two dissipative solitons differ in their pulse energy and spectrum. The switching can be controlled by an external perturbation and triggered even when switching does not occur spontaneously. Numerical simulations unveil the importance of the double-minima loss spectrum and nonlinear gain to the switching dynamics.
