Abstract:The physical properties of two-dimensional van der Waals crystals can be sensitive to interlayer coupling. For two-dimensional magnets<a href="#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="/articles/s41563-019-0505-2#ref-CR3">3</a>, theory suggests that interlayer exchange coupling is strongly dependent on layer separation while the stacking arrangement can even change the sign of the interlayer magnetic exchange, thus drastically modifying the ground state<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="#ref-CR9">9</a>,<a href="/articles/s41563-019-0505-2#ref-CR10">10</a>. Here, we demonstrate pressure tuning of magnetic order in the two-dimensional magnet CrI3. We probe the magnetic states using tunnelling<a href="/articles/s41563-019-0505-2#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="#ref-CR11">11</a>,<a href="#ref-CR12">12</a>,<a href="/articles/s41563-019-0505-2#ref-CR13">13</a> and scanning magnetic circular dichroism microscopy measurements<a href="/articles/s41563-019-0505-2#ref-CR2">2</a>. We find that interlayer magnetic coupling can be more than doubled by hydrostatic pressure. In bilayer CrI3, pressure induces a transition from layered antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic phase. In trilayer CrI3, pressure can create coexisting domains of three phases, one ferromagnetic and two antiferromagnetic. The observed changes in magnetic order can be explained by changes in the stacking arrangement. Such coupling between stacking order and magnetism provides ample opportunities for designer magnetic phases and functionalities.

Magnetism and Magneto-optical Effects in Bulk and Few-layer CrI$_3$: A Theoretical GGA + U Study

Abstract:The latest discovery of ferromagnetism in atomically thin films of semiconductors Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ and CrI$_3$ has unleashed numerous opportunities for fundamental physics of magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) limit and also for technological applications based on 2D magnetic materials. In this paper, we present a comprehensive theoretical study of the magnetic, electronic, optical and magneto-optical(MO) properties of multilayers [monolayer(ML), bilayer and trilayer] and bulk CrI$_3$, based on the density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation plus on-site Coulomb repulsion scheme. Interestingly, all the structures are found to be single-spin ferromagnetic(FM) semiconductors. They all have a large out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy energy(MAE) of $\sim$0.5 meV/Cr. These large MAEs suppress transverse spin fluctuations and thus stabilize long-range magnetic orders at finite temperatures down to the ML limit. They also exhibit strong MO effects with their Kerr and Faraday rotation angles being comparable to that of best-known bulk MO materials. The shape and position of the main features in the optical and MO spectra are found to be nearly thickness-independent although the magnitude of Kerr rotation angles increases monotonically with the film thickness. Magnetic transition temperatures estimated based on calculated exchange coupling parameters, calculated optical conductivity, MO Kerr and Faraday rotation angles agree quite well with available experimental data. The calculated MAE as well as optical and MO properties are analyzed in terms of the calculated orbital-decomposed densities of states, band state symmetries and dipole selection rules. Our findings of large out-of-plane MAEs and strong MO effects in these single-spin FM semiconducting CrI$_3$ ultrathin films suggest that they will find valuable applications in semiconductor MO and spintronic nanodevices.

Abstract:Stacking order can influence the physical properties of two-dimensional van der Waals materials 1 , 2 . Here we applied hydrostatic pressure up to 2 GPa to modify the stacking order in the van der Waals magnetic insulator CrI 3 . We observed an irreversible interlayer antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transition in atomically thin CrI 3 by magnetic circular dichroism and electron tunnelling measurements. The effect was accompanied by a monoclinic-to-rhombohedral stacking-order change characterized by polarized Raman spectroscopy. Before the structural change, the interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling energy can be tuned up by nearly 100% with pressure. Our experiment reveals the interlayer ferromagnetic ground state, which is established in bulk CrI 3 but not observed in native exfoliated thin films. The observed correlation between the magnetic ground state and the stacking order is in good agreement with first principles calculations 3 – 8 and suggests a route towards nanoscale magnetic textures by moiré engineering 3 , 9 .

Emergent magnetic states due to stacking and strain in the van der Waals magnetic trilayer CrI 3

Abstract:Recently, three different magnetic states were observed experimentally in trilayer CrI3 under pressure, including ferromagnetic (FM)-↑↑↑, FM-↓↑↓, and FM-↑↑↓. To reveal the nature of the three observed magnetic states, we studied the magnetic properties of four possible stacking structures in trilayer CrI3: Structures I (rhombohedral), II (monoclinic), III (hexagonal), and IV (triclinic). We find that all four stacking structures possess the FM-↑↑↑ ground state. After applying a few strains, FM-↓↑↓ becomes the ground state in structures II and III, and FM-↑↑↓ is preferred in structure IV, while FM-↑↑↑ persists in structure I. Our results unveil that the three magnetic states observed in trilayer CrI3 may correspond to different stacking structures with small tensile strains, which can well interpret the experimentally obtained pressure-dependent interlayer coupling and Curie temperature. Our present study paves a way to design magnetic multilayers with required magnetic states by tuning stacking and strain.

Abstract:The magnetic properties in two-dimensional van der Waals materials depend sensitively on structure. CrI3, as an example, has been recently demonstrated to exhibit distinct magnetic properties depending on the layer thickness and stacking order. Bulk CrI3 is ferromagnetic (FM) with a Curie temperature of 61 K and a rhombohedral layer stacking, whereas few-layer CrI3 has a layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase with a lower ordering temperature of 45 K and a monoclinic stacking. In this work, we use cryogenic magnetic force microscopy to investigate CrI3 flakes in the intermediate thickness range (25-200 nm) and find that the two types of magnetic orders, hence the stacking orders, can coexist in the same flake with a layer of ∼13 nm at each surface being in the layered AFM phase similar to few-layer CrI3 and the rest in the bulk FM phase. The switching of the bulk moment proceeds through a remnant state with nearly compensated magnetic moment along the c-axis, indicating formation of c-axis domains allowed by a weak interlayer coupling strength in the rhombohedral phase. Our results provide a comprehensive picture on the magnetism in CrI3 and point to the possibility of engineering magnetic heterostructures within the same material.
Giant enhancement of interlayer exchange in an ultrathin 2D magnet

Abstract:Following the recent isolation of monolayer CrI3, there has been a surge of new two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials, whose incorporation in van der Waals heterostructures offers a new platform for spintronics, proximity magnetism, and quantum spin liquids. A primary question in this burgeoning field is how exfoliating crystals to the few-layer limit influences their magnetism. Studies on CrI3 have shown a different magnetic ground state for ultrathin exfoliated films but the origin is not yet understood. Here, we use electron tunneling through few-layer crystals of the layered antiferromagnetic insulator CrCl3 to probe its magnetic order, finding a ten-fold enhancement in the interlayer exchange compared to bulk crystals. Moreover, temperature- and polarization-dependent Raman spectroscopy reveal that the crystallographic phase transition of bulk crystals does not occur in exfoliated films. This results in a different low temperature stacking order and, we hypothesize, increased interlayer exchange. Our study provides new insight into the connection between stacking order and interlayer interactions in novel two-dimensional magnets, which may be relevant for correlating stacking faults and mechanical deformations with the magnetic ground states of other more exotic layered magnets, such as RuCl3.

Abstract:Stacking order and strain are the key component in tuning magnetic property of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals magnetic materials. In this work, we investigated the crystal structure stability of a 2D ferromagnetic Janus chromium dichalcogenide CrSTe bilayer in AB- and AC-stacking orders and found that AB-stacking CrSTe bilayers, which have a smaller layer spacing and a Curie temperature near room temperature, are more stable than AC-stacking one. The magnetic ground states, exchange coupling constant, and Curie temperature of the AB-stacking CrSTe bilayer can be tuned by strain. It is found that the magnetic ground states of the AB- and AC-stacking CrSTe bilayers are ferromagnetic and interlayer antiferromagnetic within a certain strain range, respectively, indicating that the CrSTe bilayers are expected to be used in the double spin filter. Our results demonstrated that the 2D Janus CrSTe bilayer has the potential in the application of spintronic devices with stable performance and low-power consumption at room temperature.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals magnetic materials have promising and versatile electronic and magnetic properties in the 2D limit, indicating a considerable potential to advance spintronic applications. Theoretical predictions thus far have not ascertained whether monolayer VCl3 is a ferromagnetic (FM) or anti-FM monolayer; this also remains to be experimentally verified. We theoretically investigate the influence of potential factors, including C-3 symmetry breaking, orbital ordering, epitaxial strain, and charge doping, on the magnetic ground state. Utilizing first-principles calculations, we predict a collinear type-III FM ground state in monolayer VCl3 with a broken C-3 symmetry, wherein only the former two of three t(2g) orbitals (a(1g), e(g2)(pi) and e(g1)(pi)) are occupied. The atomic layer thickness and bond angles of monolayer VCl3 undergo abrupt changes driven by an orbital ordering switch, resulting in concomitant structural and magnetic phase transitions. Introducing doping to the underlying Cl atoms of monolayer VCl3 without C-3 symmetry simultaneously induces in- and out-of-plane polarizations. This can achieve a multiferroic phase transition if combined with the discovered adjustments of magnetic ground state and polarization magnitude under strain. The establishment of an orbital-ordering driven regulatory mechanism can facilitate deeper exploration and comprehension of magnetic properties of strongly correlated systems in monolayer VCl3.

Abstract:The vertically stacked van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures provide a promising platform not only in the band alignment but also constitute a fertile ground for the fundamental science and tremendous practical interest towards different device applications. Beyond most two-dimensional (2D) materials being intrinsically non-magnetic, CrI3 is a novel material with vdW bonded layer dependent magnetism, promising the potential spintronics applications. However, for prominent device applications, heterostructure is commonly fabricated and it is necessary to examine the effect of the interface or contact atoms over the magnetic properties of the heterostructure. And most importantly, the effect of assembly stress on the electronic and magnetic properties remains not clear. In this study, we design a vdW heterostructure from the two-chromium tri-halides called CrI3/Br3Cr2I3 heterostructure, where the Janus of the CrI3 monolayer called Br3Cr2I3 is also an intrinsically 2D magnetic material. Using the state-of-the-art first principles calculations, we uncover the effects of contact atoms as well as external pressure over the electronic and magnetic properties of the CrI3/Br3Cr2I3 heterostructure. It is found that the heterostructure transits from antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) ground state with pressure larger than certain threshold. We also investigate the magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of the CrI3/Br3Cr2I3 heterostructure. Remarkably, it is found that the MAE is significantly influenced by both the stacking as well as the contact atoms, which is abruptly and inconsistently varying by the contact atoms and external pressure. Further, we also reveal the correlation between MAE and the polar angle. The pressure regulated magnetic properties of the CrI3/Br3Cr2I3 heterostructures as revealed in this study highlight its potential applications for spintronic applications devices.

Abstract:In two-dimensional (2D) materials,due to weak interlayer van der Waals (vdW) interaction,the crystal structure can be tuned through the control of interlayer stacking with a rather low increase in energy.Whereas most previous work has focused on the electronic and optical properties associated with the vdW stacking,the recent discovery of magnetism in 2D materials extends this research area to magnetic properties.CrI3 and CrBr3 are two isostructural ferromagnetic 2D materials,which maintain out-of-plane ferromagnetism down to the monolayer limit.However,as confirmed through recent experiments based on mechanically exfoliated samples,CrI3 bilayers exhibit interlayer antiferromagnetism,while CrBr3 bilayers exhibit interlayer ferromagnetism.Such a striking difference in the magnetic properties between bilayers of CrI3 and CrBr3 prompts a thorough investigation of the mechanisms governing the interlayer magnetic coupling.

Abstract:Topological spin configurations have been an intriguing topic due to the exotic transport properties and promising applications in spintronic devices. The discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials such as CrI3 provide new platforms for manipulating magnetic structures. Here, by first-principle calculations and Monte Carlo methods, we investigated the exchange interaction and magnetic states of 2D van der Waals ferromagnetic/ferroelectric heterostructure CrI3/In2Se3. By switching the polarization in ferroelectric In2Se3 layer under electric field and changing the interlayer distance between CrI3 and In2Se3 under pressure, four spin configurations, ferromagnetic state, topological domain wall skyrmions, topological bimeron, and stripe domains can be realized. These striking tunable magnetic states can be understood from that the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction and single-ion anisotropy parameters are modified by switching the polarization and changing the interlayer distance. Our results of controllable topological/non-topological spin states broaden the spin phenomena and potential of spintronic applications in van der Waals heterostructures.

Emergence of a noncollinear magnetic state in twisted bilayer CrI3

Abstract:Abstract The emergence of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic crystals and moiré engineering of van der Waals materials has opened the door for devising new magnetic ground states via competing interactions in moiré superlattices. Although a suite of interesting phenomena, including multi-flavor magnetic states, noncollinear magnetic states, moiré magnon bands and magnon networks, has been predicted in twisted bilayer magnetic crystals, nontrivial magnetic ground states have yet to be realized. Here, by utilizing the stacking-dependent interlayer exchange interactions in CrI3, we demonstrate in small-twist-angle CrI3 bilayers a noncollinear magnetic ground state. It consists of antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) domains and is a result of the competing interlayer AF coupling in the monoclinic stacking regions of the moiré superlattice and the energy cost for forming AF-FM domain walls. Above a critical twist angle of ~ 3°, the noncollinear state transitions to a collinear FM ground state. We further show that the noncollinear magnetic state can be controlled by electrical gating through the doping-dependent interlayer AF interaction. Our results demonstrate the possibility of engineering new magnetic ground states in twisted bilayer magnetic crystals, as well as gate-voltage-controllable high-density magnetic memory storage.
Stacking Tunable Interlayer Magnetism in Bilayer CrI3

Abstract:Diverse interlayer tunability of physical properties of two-dimensional layers mostly lies in the covalent-like quasi-bonding that is significant in electronic structures but rather weak for energetics. Such characteristics result in various stacking orders that are energetically comparable but may significantly differ in terms of electronic structures, e.g. magnetism. Inspired by several recent experiments showing interlayer anti-ferromagnetically coupled CrI3 bilayers, we carried out first-principles calculations for CrI3 bilayers. We found that the anti-ferromagnetic coupling results from a new stacking order with the C2/m space group symmetry, rather than the graphene-like one with R3 as previously believed. Moreover, we demonstrated that the intra- and inter-layer couplings in CrI3 bilayer are governed by two different mechanisms, namely ferromagnetic super-exchange and direct-exchange interactions, which are largely decoupled because of their significant difference in strength at the strong- and weak-interaction limits. This allows the much weaker interlayer magnetic coupling to be more feasibly tuned by stacking orders solely. Given the fact that interlayer magnetic properties can be altered by changing crystal structure with different stacking orders, our work opens a new paradigm for tuning interlayer magnetic properties with the freedom of stacking order in two dimensional layered materials.

Abstract:Electrical control of magnetism is of great interest for low-energy-consumption spintronic applications. Here, via first-principles calculations, we propose a van der Waals (vdW) multiferroic heterostructure composed of a magnetic CrI3 bilayer and a ferroelectric α-In2Se3 monolayer substrate. Interestingly, the interlayer magnetism of bilayer CrI3 is switchable between the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic coupling by nonvolatile control of the ferroelectric polarization direction of α-In2Se3. The interlayer magnetic coupling of CrI3 bilayer originates from the direct interaction of adjacent I atoms between CrI3 monolayers, which can be tuned by the polarization of In2Se3, explaining the electrical control of interlayer magnetic phase transition. Our work demonstrates a multiferroelectric material platform by artificially stacking two dimensional vdW layers, providing an effective method for achieving nonvolatile electrical control of atomic-thin vdW ferromagnets.

Abstract:Stacking control Recent searches for two-dimensional magnets have turned up a number of related van der Waals materials, such as chromium triiodide (CrI 3 ) and chromium tribromide (CrBr 3 ). Although their properties are expected to be similar, in bilayer form, the former is antiferromagnetic, whereas the latter appears to be a ferromagnet. Chen et al. used spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy to determine that the nature of the magnetic state in bilayer CrBr 3 depends on the type of stacking of its monolayers. Abstract:Controlling magnetism via electric fields addresses fundamental questions of magnetic phenomena and phase transitions1–3, and enables the development of electrically coupled spintronic devices, such as voltage-controlled magnetic memories with low operation energy4–6. Previous studies on dilute magnetic semiconductors such as (Ga,Mn)As and (In,Mn)Sb have demonstrated large modulations of the Curie temperatures and coercive fields by altering the magnetic anisotropy and exchange interaction2,4,7–9. Owing to their unique magnetic properties10–14, the recently reported two-dimensional magnets provide a new system for studying these features15–19. For instance, a bilayer of chromium triiodide (CrI3) behaves as a layered antiferromagnet with a magnetic field-driven metamagnetic transition15,16. Here, we demonstrate electrostatic gate control of magnetism in CrI3 bilayers, probed by magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy. At fixed magnetic fields near the metamagnetic transition, we realize voltage-controlled switching between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic states. At zero magnetic field, we demonstrate a time-reversal pair of layered antiferromagnetic states that exhibit spin-layer locking, leading to a linear dependence of their MOKE signals on gate voltage with opposite slopes. Our results allow for the exploration of new magnetoelectric phenomena and van der Waals spintronics based on 2D materials.

Abstract:Long-range magnetic ordering of two-dimensional crystals can be sensitive to interlayer coupling, enabling the effective control of interlayer magnetism towards voltage switching, spin filtering and transistor applications. With the discovery of two-dimensional atomically thin magnets, a good platform provides us to manipulate interlayer magnetism for the control of magnetic orders. However, a less-known family of two-dimensional magnets possesses a bottom-up assembled molecular lattice and metal-to-ligand intermolecular contacts, which lead to a combination of large magnetic anisotropy and spin-delocalization. Here, we report the pressure-controlled interlayer magnetic coupling of molecular layered compounds via chromium-pyrazine coordination. Room-temperature long-range magnetic ordering exhibits pressure tuning with a coercivity coefficient up to 4 kOe/GPa, while pressure-controlled interlayer magnetism also presents a strong dependence on alkali metal stoichiometry and composition. Two-dimensional molecular interlayers provide a pathway towards pressure-controlled peculiar magnetism through charge redistribution and structural transformation.
