Abstract:Noble-metal nanocrystals are essential to applications in a variety of areas, including catalysis, electronics, and photonics. Despite the large number of reports, there still exists a gap between academic studies and industrial applications due to the lack of ability to produce the nanocrystals in large quantities while still maintaining the good uniformity and precise controls. Because the nucleation and growth of colloidal nanocrystals are highly sensitive to experimental conditions, it is impractical to scale up their production by simply increasing the reaction volume. Here we report a new and practical approach based on milliliter-sized droplet reactors to the scalable production of nanocrystals. The droplets of 0.25 mL in volume were produced as a continuous flow in a fluidic device assembled from commercially available components. As a proof of concept, we have synthesized Pd, Au, and Pd-M (M = Au, Pt, and Ag) nanocrystals with controlled sizes, shapes, compositions, and structures on a scale of 1-10 g per hour (e.g., 3.6 g per hour for Pd cubes of 10 nm in edge length).

Abstract:Nearly monodisperse face-centered cubic (fcc) and hexagonal close-packed (hcp) nickel nanoparticles have been prepared via the thermal decomposition of nickel organometallic precursors in a reaction mixture containing alkylamine, and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and magnetic measurement. The employed alkylamine can serve as both solvent and reducing agent. The as-synthesized nickel nanoparticles are air-stable, and their sizes can be readily tuned by the variation of surfactant concentration and reaction temperature. The crystalline phase control was achieved by adjusting alkylamine concentration, heating rate and reaction temperature. Magnetic measurements showed that hcp Ni nanoparticles have quite different magnetic properties compared to fcc Ni nanoparticles.

Abstract:NiO nanoparticles were prepared on the silica surface by adsorption phase synthesis. The adsorption and preparation experiments of different reactants were designed to select suitable reactants for the synthesis of NiO particles. Using X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses the differences in morphology and grain size of NiO particles prepared under various conditions were characterized. When the quantity of Ni(NO3)2 exceeded 2.0 mmol, the conglomeration of NiO particles became obvious. While the temperature increased from 0 to 40°C, the elevation of reaction rate and supersaturation in the adsorption layer resulted in appearance of NiO particles with smaller size. When the temperature exceeded 40°C, the attenuation of the adsorption layer led to the appearance of the blank silica without NiO particles.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recently known as novel precursors in nanomaterial synthesis.To understand the mechanism behind the phase transformation in atomic scale, we apply in-situ X-ray pair-distribution analysis to monitor the whole process, from distortion, destabilization, partial reduction, to the eventual nanoparticle formation and defect evolution of a series of bimetallic MOFs PCN-250.These MOFs with different trimeric node composition (Fe3, Fe2Co, and Fe2Ni) allow us to control the structure, chemistry, and defect of resulting nanoparticles.Notably, we found selective reduction of Ni from the node with defect-rich frameworks retained.This can be a new route for future MOFs crystal engineering.Figure 1.The structure of MOFs and resulting nanophases are tracked through PDF analysis.
Controlled Growth of Large-Area, Uniform, Vertically Aligned Arrays of α-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>Nanobelts and Nanowires

Abstract:Vertically aligned iron oxide nanobelt and nanowire arrays have been synthesized on a large-area surface by direct thermal oxidation of iron substrates under the flow of O-2. The effects of reactive gas pressure, composition, and temperature have been systematically studied. It was found that nanobelts (width, tens of nanometers; thickness, a few nanometers) are produced in the low-temperature region (similar to700 degreesC) whereas cylindrical nanowires tens of nanometers thick are formed at relatively higher temperatures (similar to800 degreesC). Both nanobelts and nanowires are mostly bicrystallites with a length of tens of micrometers which grow uniquely along the [110] direction. The growth habits of the nanobelts and nanowires in the two temperature regions indicate the role of growth rate anisotropy and surface energy in dictating the ultimate nanomorphologies.

Abstract:With a similar electronic structure as that of platinum, molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) holds significant potential as a high performance catalyst across many chemical reactions. Empirically, the precise control of particle size, shape, and surface nature during synthesis largely determines the catalytic performance of nanoparticles, giving rise to the need of clarifying the underlying growth characteristics in the nucleation and growth of Mo2C. However, the high-temperature annealing involved during the growth of carbides makes it difficult to directly observe and understand the nucleation and growth processes. Here, we report on the use of advanced in situ transmission electron microscopy with atomic resolution to reveal a three-stage mechanism during the growth of Mo2C nanoparticles over a wide temperature range: initial nucleation via a mechanism consistent with spinodal decomposition, subsequent particle coalescence and monomer attachment, and final surface faceting to well-defined particles with minimum surface energy. These microscopic observations made under a heating atmosphere offer new perspectives toward the design of carbide-based catalysts, as well as the tuning of their catalytic performances.

Abstract:The crystal growth kinetics is crucial for the controllable preparation and performance modulation of metal nanocrystals (NCs). However, the study of growth mechanisms is significantly limited by characterization techniques, and it is still challenging to in situ capture the growth process. Real-time and real-space imaging techniques at the atomic scale can promote the understanding of microdynamics for NC growth. Herein, the growth of Pd NCs on monolayer MoS2 under different atmospheres was in situ studied by environmental transmission electron microscopy. Introducing carbon monoxide can modulate the diffusion of Pd monomers, resulting in the epitaxial growth of Pd NCs with a uniform orientation. The electron energy loss spectroscopy and theoretical calculations showed that the CO adsorption assured the specific exposed facets and good uniformity of Pd NCs. The insight into the gas-solid interface interaction and the microscopic growth mechanism of NCs may shed light on the precise synthesis of NCs on two-dimensional (2D) materials.

Abstract:A novel electrochemical deposition method has been used for coating Ni onto well-aligned multiwall carbon nanotubes. Both synthesis of carbon nanotubes and deposition of Ni are processed in porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAC) templates. The design of the AAO pores allows us easily to control the size of nanotubes and the thickness of the Ni coating. Without any surface treatment to the carbon nanotubes, a continuous and smooth Ni layer is achieved.

Abstract:The development of new methods which enable exquisite control over crystal size over a wide range is highly desired for optimizing their performance. In this work, we employed anatase TiO2 as an example to demonstrate a heterogeneous nucleation approach by coupling the slow hydrolysis of a titanium precursor and a dispersible silica substrate. After tight control of the number of nucleation sites, the crystal size is greatly dependent on the number of seeds. An in-depth nucleation analysis was carried out that showed that the reaction product, hydrofluoric acid (HF), plays a key role in selective etching of the substrate and further leads to crystal–substrate separation. Additionally, our preliminary results illustrated that the growth of Fe2O3 crystals can also be tuned by such a method without shape and composition variation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of fine-tuning the crystal size of anatase TiO2 by a heterogeneous nucleation method, and this provides a promising way to design and synthesize new materials with appropriate size and shape.

Abstract:The mass preparation of high-purity coiled carbon fibers (CCFs) remains challenging due to the high complexity and low controllability of reaction. In this work, a controllable growth of Ni particles was fulfilled by liquid phase reduction of nickel sulfate with hydrazine hydrate. The impacts of the reaction temperature, NaOH concentration, and reaction time on the particle size and purity were investigated. The as-deposited Ni particles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. In addition, these Ni particles were also applied in preparing high-purity CCFs both on graphite and ceramic substrates. The diameter of the as-grown carbon microcoil was about 500 nm, and the related growth mechanism was discussed.

Abstract:Controlled growth of well-oriented metal-organic framework nanoarrays on requisite surfaces is of prominent significance for a broad range of applications such as catalysis, sensing, optics and electronics. Herein, we develop a highly flexible soft nanobrush-directed synthesis approach for precise in situ fabrication of MOF nanoarrays on diverse substrates. The soft nanobrushes are constructed via surface-initiated living crystallization-driven self-assembly and their active poly(2-vinylpyridine) corona captures abundant metal cations through coordination interactions. This allows the rapid heterogeneous growth of MOF nanoparticles and the subsequent formation of MIL-100 (Fe), HKUST-1 and CUT-8 (Cu) nanoarrays with tailored heights of 220~1100 nm on silicon wafer, Ni foam and ceramic tube. Auxiliary functional components including metal oxygen clusters and precious metal nanoparticles can be readily incorporated to finely fabricate hybrid structures with synergistic features. Remarkably, the MIL-100 (Fe) nanoarrays doped with Keggin H 3 PMo 10 V 2 O 40 dramatically boost formaldehyde selectivity up to 92.8% in catalytic oxidation of methanol. Moreover, the HKUST-1 nanoarrays decorated with Pt nanoparticles show exceptional sensitivity to H 2 S with a ppb-level detection limit.

Abstract:A general, reproducible, and simple strategy using generic chemicals is introduced for controlling the size, shape, and size distribution of oxide nanocrystals. The reaction system was generally composed of the metal fatty acid salts, the corresponding fatty acids, and a hydrocarbon solvent. The method is based on the pyrolysis of metal fatty acid salts, the most common metal compounds compatible with nonaqueous solutions. Synthesis of nearly monodisperse Fe3O4 nanocrystals in a large size range (3-50 nm) was developed as the model system. The method was further applied for the growth of oxide nanocrystals of the other magnetic metals in the fourth row-Cr2O3, MnO, Co3O4, and NiO nanocrystals. The size and shape control of the nanocrystals were achieved by varying the reactivity and concentration of the precursors. The reactivity was tuned by changing the chain length and concentration of the ligands, the fatty acids. Alcohols or primary amines could be used as the activation reagents when a given metal fatty acid salt was not sufficiently active under selected reaction conditions.

Abstract:The size and morphology of metal nanoparticles (NPs) often play a critical role in defining the catalytic performance of supported metal nanocatalysts. However, common synthetic methods struggle to produce metal NPs of appropriate size and morphological control. Thus, facile synthetic methods that offer controlled catalytic functions are highly desired. Here we have identified a new pathway to synthesize supported Rh nanocatalysts with finely tuned spatial dimensions and controlled morphology using a doping-segregation method. We have analyzed their structure evolutions during both the segregation process and catalytic reaction using a variety of in situ spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. A correlation between the catalytic functional sites and activity in CO2 hydrogenation over supported Rh nanocatalysts is then established. This study demonstrates a facile strategy to design and synthesize nanocatalysts with desired catalytic functions.

Abstract:We reported a simple, large-scale, and controllable growth method for network-like branched single-crystalline Si3N4 nanostructures by catalyst-assisted pyrolysis of a polysilazane. The templates were a silicon wafer deposited with a 5 nm Fe film. The processes simply involved in thermal cross-linking of the polymer precursor, crushing of the solidified preceramic polymer chunks into fine powder, and thermal pyrolysis of the powder under the protection of ultra-high purity nitrogen. The collected white network-like branched nanostnictures were formed through "metal-absorption on the surface of nanostructures" model by vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. Microstructure characterizations indicate that the nanostructures are single-crystalline hexagonal alpha-Si3N4. The reaction mechanism of Si3N4 nanonetworks was also proposed. Abstract:We present a new type of highly hierarchical but nonporous nanostructure with a unique "dandelion" morphology. Based on the time evolution of these Ni3 C nanostructures, we suggest a mechanism for their formation. This type of hierarchical nanocrystal, with high accessible specific surface area in a relatively large (ca. 750 nm overall diameter) stable structure, can be valuable in catalysis and related applications.

Abstract:Metal nanowires show promise in a broad range of applications and can be fabricated via a number of methods, such as vapor–liquid–solid process and template-based electrodeposition. However, the synthesis of Al nanowires (NWs) is still challenging from the stable alumina substrate. In this work, the Ni-catalyzed fabrication of Al NWs has been realized using various Al 2 O 3 substrates. The growth dynamics of Al NWs on Ni/Al 2 O 3 was studied using in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effect of alumina structures, compositions, and growth temperature were investigated. The growth of Al NWs correlates with the Na addition to the alumina support. Since no eutectic mixture of nickel aluminide was formed, a mechanism of Ni-catalyzed reduction of Al 2 O 3 for Al NWs growth has been proposed instead of the vapor–liquid–solid mechanism. The key insights reported here are not restricted to Ni-catalyzed Al NWs growth but can be extended to understanding the dynamic change and catalytic performance of Ni/Al 2 O 3 under working conditions.

Activation of Specific Sites on Cubic Nanocrystals: a New Pathway for Controlled Epitaxial Growth Towards Catalytic Applications

Abstract:A method has been developed for controlled epitaxial growth on cubic nanocrystals by selectively activating their surface via etching. For example, it produces Pd concave nanocubes via seeding growth on their corners and edges, and in turn, formulates highly active sites for catalysis. This method offers a better capability of preventing atomic addition on undesired locations and maintaining particle size in the seeding process, as compared with the previous technique. With the particle size well maintained, the products fully exhibit superior electrocatalytic performance enabled by active sites and high-index facets in formic acid oxidation. Another contribution of this work is to enable the growth of a noble metal with high catalytic activities on another type of cheaper metal, which greatly reduces the usage of expensive materials while retaining high catalytic activity. In this article, we have demonstrated the deposition of a very limited amount of Pt (only 3.3 wt%) on Pd nanocrystals towards high electrocatalytic activities in an oxygen reduction reaction. Preliminary studies demonstrate that the synthetic strategy can be also applied to the controllable deposition of a different material on the faces of a nanocrystal by simply altering surface conditions.
Controlling Pt nanoparticle sintering by sub-monolayer MgO ALD thin films

Abstract:Metal nanoparticle (NP) sintering is a major cause of catalyst deactivation, as NP growth reduces the surface area available for reaction. A promising route to halt sintering is to deposit a protective overcoat on the catalyst surface, followed by annealing to generate overlayer porosity for gas transport to the NPs. Yet, such a combined deposition-annealing approach lacks structural control over the cracked protection layer and the number of NP surface atoms available for reaction. Herein, we exploit the tailoring capabilities of atomic layer deposition (ALD) to deposit MgO overcoats on archetypal Pt NP catalysts with thicknesses ranging from sub-monolayers to nm-range thin films. Two different ALD processes are studied for the growth of MgO overcoats on Pt NPs anchored on a SiO2 support, using Mg(EtCp)2 and H2O, and Mg(TMHD)2 and O3, respectively. Spectroscopic ellipsometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements reveal significant growth on both SiO2 and Pt for the former process, while the latter exhibits a drastically lower growth per cycle with an initial chemical selectivity towards Pt. These differences in MgO growth characteristics have implications for the availability of uncoated Pt surface atoms at different stages of the ALD process, as probed by low energy ion scattering, and for the sintering behavior during O2 annealing, as monitored in situ with grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (in situ GISAXS). The Mg(TMHD)2-O3 ALD process enables exquisite coverage control allowing a balance between physically blocking the Pt surface to prevent sintering and keeping Pt surface atoms free for reaction. This approach avoids the need for post-annealing, hence also safeguarding the structural integrity of the as-deposited overcoat.

Abstract:Understanding the growth pathway of faceted alloy nanoparticles at the atomic level is crucial to morphology control and property tuning. Yet, it remains a challenge due to complexity of the growth process and technical limits of modern characterization tools. We report a combinational use of multiple cutting-edge in situ techniques to study the growth process of octahedral Pt 3 Ni nanoparticles, which reveal the particle growth and facet formation mechanisms. Our studies confirm the formation of octahedral Pt 3 Ni initiates from Pt nuclei generation, which is followed by continuous Pt reduction that simultaneously catalyzes Ni reduction, resulting in mixed alloy formation with moderate elemental segregation. Carbon monoxide molecules serve as a facet formation modulator and induce Ni segregation to the surface, which inhibits the (111) facet growth and causes the particle shape to evolve from a spherical cluster to an octahedron as the (001) facet continues to grow.
