Abstract:Methyl lactate production from biomass by chemical catalysis is a promising approach in chemical industry. NiO from different suppliers was screened and catalytic conversion processes of biomass-derived carbohydrates to methyl lactate in near critical methanol was optimized. The catalyst used was characterized and the mechanism of the catalytic conversion process with NiO was probed. The results show that NiO from different suppliers has a significant impact on the catalytic conversion of glucose to methyl lactate. NiO from Aladdin has the best catalytic activity. Methyl lactate yield in near-critical methanol is 46.2% under optimal conditions. Moreover, NiO from Aladdin has good reusability. Moderate acidity of catalysts may be the key factor that affects methyl lactate yields. Higher moderate acidity contents of NiO results in higher methyl lactate yields. This work may be helpful in the development of heterogeneous catalysis systems for catalytic conversion of biomass to methyl lactate.

Abstract:A ZnO‐nanolayer‐coated carbon nanotube (CNT) composite (ZnO–CNT) was employed as a support to immobilise Ni catalysts. Well‐mixed oxides, formed as a result of enhanced interfaces between the two oxides on CNTs, resulted in the formation of Ni–Zn alloys in reduced catalysts. The Ni/ZnO–CNT catalyst exhibited much higher yields of vicinal diols, for example, ethylene glycol and 1,2‐propylene glycol, from the conversion of cellulose than the reference Ni/CNT catalyst. A plausible reaction network on the Ni/ZnO–CNT catalyst has been proposed. Moreover, the effects of Ni loading and catalyst reduction temperature on the catalytic performance were probed, and the relationship between the catalyst structure and the yields of vicinal diols was correlated. The Ni‐rich alloy, relative to the Zn‐rich alloy, was suggested as the dominating active phase for the selective conversion of cellulose into vicinal diols. This might shed new light on the design and optimisation of Ni‐based catalysts for the catalytic conversion of cellulose with the Ni–Zn interaction.

Abstract:The production of high value-added chemicals and materials from renewable biomass is significant for the sustainable development of chemical industry. Herein, rice husk based biogenic silica-anchored Sn-Co catalysts with adjustable activity are successfully prepared for biomass valorization. By regulating the pretreatment method and carbothermal reduction temperature of catalysts, the interaction between Co, Sn and biogenic silica can be regulated, thereby regulating the catalytic activity of the catalyst for cellulose hydrogenolysis. 50.7% yield of acetol and 63.4% yield of C3 products can be obtained. A series of characterizations show that the hydrothermal pretreatment in CoCl2 solution promotes the combination of Co2+ and biogenic silica, which inhibits the excessive doping of Sn4+ and promotes the formation of Co3Sn2 alloy. The Sn-O-Si and Co3Sn2 species in 3Sn-5Co@RHC are the key active sites catalyzing glucose isomerization and fructose retro-aldol condensation. The intermediates experiments show that controlling the hydrolysis rate of cellulose to avoid excessive concentration of monosaccharide intermediates in the reaction system is crucial for inhibiting side reactions and improving the yield of acetol. The use of agroforestry waste-based catalytic materials for biomass conversion in this work can provide inspiration for exploiting the intrinsic characteristics of biomass to develop high value-added materials and chemicals.

Abstract:An efficient conversion of cellulose to CH4 over porous Ni catalyst under hydrothermal conditions has been investigated. The results indicated that porous Ni catalyst showed significant catalytic activity and selectivity for the cellulose conversion to methane. Porous Ni catalyst still remained good activity with gaseous hydrogen after three runs for the transformation. The maximum CH4 yield of 73.8% from cellulose was achieved in the presence of Zn as a reductant over porous Ni at 325°C for 2h. This value obtained is the highest yield for the formation of CH4 from cellulose to date. The mechanistic studies for this transformation proposed three possible pathways for the formation of CH4 from cellulose: (1) pyrolysis, (2) hydrogenation of intermediates, and (3) methanation. The present work provides an environmentally benign and efficient route for the conversion of cellulose to CH4 with high efficiency and high selectivity and has great significance for both academia and industry.

Abstract:Direct conversion of cellulose into ethylene glycol is a promising route for transforming sustainable biomass resources into high-value chemicals. Although numerous attempts have been made to exploit tungsten-based hydrogenolysis catalysts in the catalytic conversion of cellulose to ethylene glycol for high conversion rate and selectivity, maintaining catalyst stability remains challenging. Herein, we have developed a Ni–W/M catalyst with good catalytic performance and stability, which were obtained by calcining Ni–W/MIL-125(Ti) precursor. The synthesized catalyst showed good cellulose conversion rate (100%) and ethylene glycol yield (68.7%). The tungsten species was linked to the TiO2 support by Ti–O–W bonds to reduce loss of the active tungsten component. Abstract:The bi-functional Ni–W@C catalysts were prepared by one-pot reduction–carbonization method and used in hydrogenolysis of cellulose as well as raw lignocellulosic biomass to chemicals. The catalytic performance for cellulose conversion showed that it was more favorable for ethylene glycol (EG) production, obtaining the highest EG yield 60.1% over the Ni–W@C700 catalyst. The Ni–W@C bimetallic catalysts are systematically characterized with BET, XRD, Raman, XPS, TEM techniques and experiments to probe the active catalytic sites of the catalysts. The effects of calcination temperature of Ni–W catalysts, reaction time, temperature and H2 pressure on cellulose hydrogenolysis were investigated in detail. The Ni particles could lead to produce more W5+ active sites, which promotes the glucose retro-aldol condensation to break the target C–C bonds. Metallic Ni catalyzed C=O hydrogenation and C–C hydrogenolysis, which could also avoid the coke formation. The EG selectivity was dependent on the synergy of WOx and Ni metal sites. In addition, this synergistic effect between the metal and WOx could promote lignin component degradation in direct conversion of untreated raw lignocellulosic biomass, obtaining the propyl monophenolics including guaiacylpropane, syringylpropane and p-n-propylphenol with a total yield of 17.3 wt% besides EG.

Abstract:Ethanol is an important bulk chemical with diverse applications. Biomass-derived ethanol is traditionally produced by fermentation. Direct cellulose conversion to ethanol by chemocatalysis is particularly promising but remains a great challenge. Herein, a one-pot hydrogenolysis of cellulose into ethanol was developed by using graphene-layers-encapsulated nickel (Ni@C) catalysts with the aid of H3PO4 in water. The cellulose was hydrolyzed into glucose, which was activated by forming cyclic di-ester bonds between the OH groups of H3PO4 and glucose, promoting ethanol formation under the synergistic hydrogenation of Ni@C. A 69.1 % yield of ethanol (carbon mole basis) was obtained, which is comparable to the theoretical value achieved by glucose fermentation. An ethanol concentration of up to 8.9 wt % was obtained at an increased cellulose concentration. This work demonstrates a chemocatalytic approach for the high-yield production of ethanol from renewable cellulosic biomass at high concentration.

Abstract:Production of chemicals and fuels from microcrystalline cellulose has inspired scholars’ attention. Deactivation of metallic catalysts including acid leaching and hydrothermal aggregation is still one of the core issues in these systems. To address these problems, we designed and fabricated a series of Ni-W/SiO2 catalysts, which were decorated by C x N y species using C- and N-sources and applied in cellulose conversion to C2,3 oxygenated compounds. The Ni-W/SiO2@C x N y catalysts, underwent complexing and self-assembling process, exhibited special heterojunctions, accompanying strong interactions mainly among Ni phase and C x N y layers. Catalytic results showed that the heterojunctions and outer C x N y layers extensively enhanced productions of hydroxyacetone (HDA) and ethylene glycol (EG) and promoted the hydrothermal stability through prospering in concentration of Lewis pairs from NiN—N structure and immobilizing the metallic nanoclusters. 48.25% of EG was yielded under 5.0 MPa H2 pressurized 240 °C water for 2.0 h. The Lewis pair further improved the formation of HDA with 20.92% yield. High hydrothermal stability of Ni-W/SiO2@C x N y catalyst was proved according to the recycling results and trace leaching concentration of Ni and W. This construction of metallic catalysts exploited a new strategy to manufacture extraordinary durability of metallic nanoclusters for cellulose conversion under harsh reaction conditions.

Abstract:The one-pot catalytic conversion of cellulose into ethylene glycol (EG) is an attractive way of biomass utilization. However, low-cost, efficient, and stable catalysts are the premise and research challenges of industrial application. Herein, the magnetic recyclable W–Ni@C catalyst was synthesized by in-situ pyrolysis of Ni-MOFs impregnated with ammonium metatungstate. Compared with the Ni-W bimetallic catalysts prepared by the impregnation method and the sol–gel method, the W–Ni@C catalyst for cellulose hydrogenolysis reaction can achieve a higher ethylene glycol yield (67.1% vs 43.3% and 42.6%) and 100% of cellulose conversion rate. The uniformly dispersed Ni nanoparticles and abundant defective WOx were formed in a reductive atmosphere generated in pyrolysis of Ni-MOFs, which was indispensable for the hydrogenolysis of cellulose into EG. Besides, the hierarchical porous carbon derived from organic ligands in Ni-MOFs reduces the mass transfer resistance while confining Ni nanoparticles and WOx to prevent their leaching, effectively enhancing the stability of the W–Ni@C catalyst. Therefore, the remarkable catalytic performance, the simple and effective recovery method as well as satisfying stability would make W–Ni@C become a promising catalyst for the conversion of cellulose to EG.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Cellulose is an attractive and potential biomass material in nature. It has been studied for decades to convert it into high value-added chemical materials. In this article, we prepared a unique structure of a yolk–shell catalyst with uniform-sized Pd nanoparticles as the core and easily modified mesoporous silica as the shell, and the shell was modified by alumina and tungsten oxide. The modified /Al-MSiO2 yolk–shell-structured nanosphere (YSNS) catalyst showed good catalytic activity in the conversion of cellulose to ethylene glycol: the conversion of cellulose was 96.1%, and the selectivity of ethylene glycol reached 56.5%. From XRD, XPS, and 27Al MAS NMR spectral analysis, it can be seen that the existence of tungsten species would lead to the formation of more extra framework aluminum, which increased the acid strength; meanwhile, aluminum made the tungsten oxide oligomer increase, which increased the dispersion of tungsten species on the catalyst. The interaction of the two metal oxides increased the acidity and the increase in tungsten oxide oligomers were the reasons for the higher selectivity of ethylene glycol. Due to the protective effect of the shell on the Pd nanoparticles, there was no sintering and serious loss of Pd during the reaction, and only small amounts of tungsten and aluminum distributed in the pores and surface were lost. Therefore, the /Al-MSiO2 YSNS catalyst maintained 48.5% ethylene glycol selectivity after five cycles.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of biomass into high value-added products has attracted wide attention, especially the efficient and selective conversion of cellulose into valuable chemicals and fuels. In this paper, using Ni, Al and Ni, Zn, Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as precursors, mixed metal oxides Ni-MMO and NiZn-MMO catalysts were synthesized. In the process of catalyzing the conversion of cellulose to polyols, the reaction condition was an H2 pressure of 4 MPa, and the temperature was 240 °C for 2 hours, the NiZn-MMO catalyst, which can achieve 100% conversion rate and excellent cycling performance in the process of catalytic conversion of cellulose to polyols. The characterization and reaction results showed that the size of the active metal particles Ni in the synthesized Ni-MMO and NiZn-MMO catalysts were very small, and only 1-2nm. ZnO in the NiZn-MMO catalyst mainly play an isomerization role, promoting the formation of more 1,2-PG, while the strong interaction between Ni and Zn can inhibit the dissolution of metal Ni in the hydrothermal reaction. On the other hand, Ni mainly plays the role of rapid hydrogenation to avoid coking, which constitutes a multi-functional synergistic catalytic process for the conversion of cellulose to polyols in high temperature water. This work provides an economical and efficient catalyst, which is of great significance for the effective conversion of biomass.

Abstract:Lignin is the most abundant renewable aromatic resource in nature; thus, the development of an efficient and economical catalysts that can depolymerize lignin into value-added aromatic monomers is highly desirable. Here, we report a single-atom Ni catalyst (xNi/CeO2-S, where x represents the Ni loading), in which the single-atom Ni sites are anchored to the oxygen vacancies on CeO2 nanospheres, for the conversion of cellulolytic enzyme lignin (CEL) via depolymerization and hydrodeoxygenation. The 1.0Ni/CeO2-S catalyst performed the best, achieving a lignin oil (LO) and maximum monomer yield of 84.3 wt% and 32.6 wt%, respectively; a higher heat value of 31.64 MJ/Kg is achieved for LO compared to 23.03 MJ/Kg for CEL. Thus, single-atom nickel catalyst exhibited excellent activity and stability in promoting the depolymerization of lignin. These results validate the viability of single-atom metal catalysts for the conversion of lignin resources.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrogenolysis of CO bonds in lignin provides a promising route to produce high value-added biofuels and chemicals. However, designing highly active and stable catalysts for this process is still a challenge. Herein, a series of Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts were synthesized by calcination and reduction of layered double hydroxide precursors, and their activities were evaluated in the catalytic conversion of lignin-derived compounds. Diphenyl ether was completely converted with a 100% monomeric selectivity (cyclohexane and cyclohexanol) over the optimized Ni/Al 2 O 3 -500 under the optimal conditions of 200 °C, 0.5 MPa H 2 and 1.5 h, indicating the excellent catalytic activity in the cleavage of CO bonds of the catalyst. The excellent catalytic performances of Ni/Al 2 O 3 -500 were originated from its relatively large specific surface area, well-developed porosity, small crystallite size, high Ni 0 concentration and strong interaction between the active metal and support. The reusability experiments show that Ni/Al 2 O 3 -500 possesses a relatively high stability for six reuses. Moreover, various lignin model compounds can be completely converted to corresponding monomeric products over Ni/Al 2 O 3 -500, indicating the applicability of this ingenious catalyst. The application of the hydrotalcite-derived Ni-based catalysts with high activity and stability provides a promising approach for the efficient hydrogenolysis of lignin derivatives.

Abstract:The process of converting cellulose into short-chain alcohols is a critical component of biomass valorization. In this study, we utilized an anion-cation co-directed hydrothermal method and wet impregnation to synthesize a hierarchical MFI zeolite with isolated Ni and W sites. We employed linear correlation analysis to evaluate the influence of pore size, site accessibility, and acidity on product selectivity. Balancing hydrogenation and acidic sites on the catalyst enhanced retro-aldol condensation and hydrogenation during cellulose conversion. Surface acidic sites accelerated glucose retro-aldol condensation, while micropore acidic sites aided in ethylene glycol hydrogenolysis. The close proximity of Ni and W facilitated high selectivity and yield of ethanol through bimetallic synergy. This research presented a novel strategy for preparing hierarchical zeolites with isolated metal sites and provides clarity on the cooperative roles of active sites in Ni-W bimetallic catalysts for cellulose conversion.

Abstract:Efficient utilization of cellulose is of scientific significance and a great challenge for both fundamental and industrial studies. Herein, we synthesized MesoZSM-5 zeolites by using nanocrystalline cellulose as a template for the first time, and reported the exciting performance of the corresponding non-noble metal catalysts (Ni/MesoZSM-5) for efficient conversion of cellulose to hexitols. By modulating the ratio of the template to precursor, MesoZSM-5 supports were produced with tunable pore structure and acidic sites. With the cooperation of active Ni sites and acidic sites of MesoZSM-5, hexitols were obtained with a high yield of around 60% in the direct conversion of commercial microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). The corresponding correlation between the structural characteristics and catalytic performance was established. This work provides a new approach for efficient utilization of cellulose, as well as gives rise to a sustainable templating method for the synthesis of mesoporous zeolites.
Structure Regulation of Lignin-Derived N-Doped Carbon-Supported Ni Catalyst for Efficient Upgrading of Ethanol to Higher Alcohols

Abstract:The selective conversion of biomass-derived ethanol into higher alcohols is a desirable but challenging process for the efficient production of value-added chemicals from alternative carbon sources. However, the current catalysts used in ethanol coupling exhibit low conversion rates and yields towards the formation of higher alcohols, necessitating significant improvements in their efficiency for practical applications. In this work, a lignin-derived N-doped carbon- supported Ni catalyst for ethanol coupling was designed and synthesized. The Ni@NC catalyst, synthesized using diethylenetriamine as the nitrogen source with a mass ratio of nitrogen source to lignin of 2:1 and a molar ratio of metal to lignin of 20:1, demonstrated excellent performance, with an ethanol conversion rate of 81.1 % and a yield of C4+ alcohols reaching 35.3 %. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that nitrogen-doped lignin, in appropriate quantities, along with the metal active component, forms a Ni-N-C structure that controls charge redistribution between the support and the Ni catalyst. This structure hinders the interaction of reaction intermediates and inhibits the production of by-products in the decomposition reaction, resulting in a higher yield of C4+ alcohols. This study presents a more cost-effective and efficient approach for developing ethanol-coupling catalysts and holds promise for expanding the utility of lignin-derived catalysts.

Abstract:The depolymerization and upgrading of lignin from raw biomass,while keeping cellulose intact is impor-tant in biorefinery and various metal-based catalysts have been used in reductive catalytic fractionation,a key method in"lignin-first"strategy.Recently,we found that a core-shell structured Co@CoO catalyst with CoO shell as the real active site had excellent performance in the hydrogenolysis of 5-hydromethylfurfural to 2,5-dimethylfuran due to its unique ability to dissociate H2 and yield active Hδ-species(Xiang et al.,2022).In this work,we report a one-pot depolymerization and upgrading of lig-nocellulose to alkylcyclohexanols,a flavour precursor,with intact cellulose over this unique core-shell structured catalyst,Co@CoO.Lignin model compounds(β-O-4,4-O-5,α-O-4)were first used to clarify the activity of Co@CoO catalyst.Then,the one-pot conversion of various organosolv lignin(birch,pine and poplar)to alkylcyclohexanols was realized with the mass yield of alkylcyclohexanols up to 25.8 wt％from birch lignin under the reaction condition of 210℃,1 MPa H2,16 h.Finally,the correspond-ing woody sawdusts were used as feedstocks and found that the Co@CoO catalyst indeed preferentially depolymerized and upgraded the lignin part and obtained the same alkylcyclohexanols products with the retention of cellulose-rich pulp.The collected alkylcyclohexanols were further esterified to obtain value-added esters,which can be used as flavors.This work will inspire the design of new efficient metal oxide catalysts in lignin fractionation and depolymerization to high-value-added chemicals with intact cellulose.
Efficient Catalytic Upgrading of Ethanol to Higher Alcohols via Inhibiting C–C Cleavage and Promoting C–C Coupling over Biomass-Derived NiZn@NC Catalysts

Abstract:The conversion of renewable bioethanol into high-energy-density higher alcohols has become essential for meeting the increasing global demand to achieve carbon neutrality. In this study, Zn- and nitrogen-codoped Ni-based lignin-derived carbon catalysts (NiZn@NC) were prepared by solvent volatile self-assembly and in situ reductive carbonization using pulp and paper waste stream alkali lignin as the carbon source. Lignin amphipathic derivatives with −COOH and −NH2 groups would coordinate with metal ions to form a stable lignin–metal framework; thus, the lignin-derived carbon layer disperses the NiZn bimetallic catalyst and prevents from corroding. At an amination reagent/lignin mass ratio of 1:2, an ethanol conversion of 75.2% and a high alcohol yield of 41.7% were achieved over the Ni20Zn1@NC catalyst. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations showed that Zn doping improved the electronic environment and defect structures of metallic Ni and carbon carrier, which effectively inhibited C–C cleavage and suppressed the byproduct formation, such as methane. Thereby, the synergetic effect between Ni and Zn facilitated the efficient conversion of aqueous ethanol into higher alcohols by the Guerbet reaction. This work provides a strategy of in situ pyrolytic doping and stabilizing of renewable biomass macromolecules as the frameworks for the construction of highly active and cost-efficient catalysts for ethanol upgrading.
