Abstract:Real spherical designs and real and complex projective designs have been shown by Delsarte, Goethals, and Seidel to give rise to association schemes when the strength of the design is high compared to its degree as a code. In contrast, designs on the complex unit sphere remain relatively uninvestigated, despite their importance in numerous applications. In this paper, we develop the notion of a complex spherical design and show how many such designs carry the structure of an association scheme. In contrast with the real spherical designs and the real and complex projective designs, these association schemes are nonsymmetric.

Abstract:An association scheme is called skew-symmetric if it has no symmetric adjacency relations other than the diagonal one. In this paper, we study 4-class skew-symmetric association schemes. In J. Ma [On the nonexistence of skew-symmetric amorphous association schemes, submitted for publication], we discovered that their character tables fall into three types. We now determine their intersection matrices. We then determine the character tables and intersection numbers for 4-class skew-symmetric pseudocyclic association schemes, the only known examples of which are cyclotomic schemes. As a result, we answer a question raised by S. Y. Song [Commutative association schemes whose symmetrizations have two classes, J. Algebraic Combin. 5(1) 47-55, 1996]. We characterize and classify 4-class imprimitive skew-symmetric association schemes. We also prove that no 2-class Johnson scheme can admit a 4-class skew-symmetric fission scheme. Based on three types of character tables above, a short list of feasible parameters is generated.

Abstract:Association schemes on triples (ASTs) are 3-dimensional analogues of classical association schemes. If a group acts two-transitively on a set, the orbits of the action induced on the triple Cartesian product of that set yields an AST. By considering the actions of semidirect products of the affine special linear group ASL(k,n) with subgroups of the Galois group Gal(GF(n)), we obtain the sizes, third valencies, and intersection numbers of the ASTs obtained from subgroups of the affine special semilinear group.

Abstract:We give explicit models for spherical functions on $p$-adic symmetric spaces $X=H\backslash G$ for pairs of $p$-adic groups $(G,H)$ of the form $(\mathrm{U}(2r),\mathrm{U}(r)\times \mathrm{U}(r)),$ $(\mathrm{O}(2r),\mathrm{O}(r)\times \mathrm{O}(r)),$ $(\mathrm{Sp}(4r),\mathrm{Sp}(2r)\times\mathrm{Sp}(2r))),$ $(\mathrm{U}(2r+1),\mathrm{U}(r+1)\times \mathrm{U}(r)),$ and $ (\mathrm{O}(2r+1),\mathrm{O}(r+1)\times \mathrm{O}(r)).$ As an application, we completely describe their Hecke module structure.

Spherical objects in dimensions two and three

Abstract:This paper classifies spherical objects in various geometric settings in dimensions two and three, including both minimal and partial crepant resolutions of Kleinian singularities, as well as arbitrary flopping 3-fold contractions with only Gorenstein terminal singularities. The main result is much more general: in each such setting, we prove that all objects in the associated null category with no negative Ext groups are the image, under the action of an appropriate braid or pure braid group, of some object in the heart of a bounded t-structure. The corollary is that all objects which admit no negative Exts, and for which the self-Hom space is one dimensional, are the images of the simples. A variation on this argument goes further, and classifies all bounded t-structures. There are multiple geometric, topological and algebraic consequences, primarily to autoequivalences and stability conditions. Our main new technique also extends into representation theory, and we establish that in the derived category of a finite dimensional algebra which is silting discrete, every object with no negative Ext groups lies in the heart of a bounded t-structure. As a consequence, every semibrick complex can be completed to a simple minded collection.

Abstract:We investigate the space $X$ of unitary hermitian matrices over $\frp$-adic fields through spherical functions. First we consider Cartan decomposition of $X$, and give precise representatives for fields with odd residual characteristic, i.e., $2\notin \frp$. In the latter half we assume odd residual characteristic, and give explicit formulas of typical spherical functions on $X$, where Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials of type $C_n$ appear as a main term, parametrization of all the spherical functions. By spherical Fourier transform, we show the Schwartz space $\SKX$ is a free Hecke algebra $\hec$-module of rank $2^n$, where $2n$ is the size of matrices in $X$, and give the explicit Plancherel formula on $\SKX$.

Abstract:The symmetries of surfaces which can be embedded into the symmetries of the 3-dimensional Euclidean space ℝ3 are easier to feel by human’s intuition. We give the maximum order of finite group actions on (ℝ3, Σ) among all possible embedded closed/bordered surfaces with given geometric/algebraic genus greater than 1 in ℝ3. We also identify the topological types of the bordered surfaces realizing the maximum order, and find simple representative embeddings for such surfaces.

Abstract:In this article we consider spherical hypersurfaces in $\mathbb C^2$ with a fixed Reeb vector field as 3-dimensional Sasakian manifolds. We establish the correspondence between three different sets of parameters, namely, those arising from representing the Reeb vector field as an automorphism of the Heisenberg sphere, the parameters used in Stanton's description of rigid spheres, and the parameters arising from the rigid normal forms. We also geometrically describe the moduli space for rigid spheres, and provide geometric distinction between Stanton's hypersurfaces and those found by Ezhov and Schmalz. Finally, we determine the Sasakian automorphism groups of the rigid spheres and detect the homogeneous Sasakian manifolds among them.

We compute the parameters and determine the character tables for all nontrivial commutative association schemes belonging to this family.

Abstract:An embedding of a space Y into the 3-sphere S3 is said to be strictly achiral if its image is pointwise fixed by an orientation reversing homeomorphism of S3. A space Y is said to be abstractly planar if it can be embedded into the 2-sphere S2. We first extend Kuratowski Theorem into a criterion for abstract planarity of polyhedra, then show that a polyhedron has a strictly achiral polyhedral embedding into S3 if and only if it is abstractly planar. Some related higher dimensional examples are also discussed.

Abstract:Let ${\mathcal X} = (X, \{R_i\}_{i=0}^d)$ denote a symmetric association scheme. Fix an ordering $\{E_i\}_{i=0}^d$ of the primitive idempotents of $\mathcal{X}$, and let $P$ (resp.\ $Q$) denote the corresponding first eigenmatrix (resp.\ second eigenmatrix) of $\mathcal X$. The scheme $\mathcal X$ is said to be formally self-dual (with respect to the ordering $\{E_i\}_{i=0}^d$) whenever $P=Q$. We define $\mathcal X$ to be numerically self-dual (with respect to the ordering $\{E_i\}_{i=0}^d$) whenever the intersection numbers and Krein parameters satisfy $p^h_{i,j} =q^h_{i,j}$ for $0 \leq h,i,j \leq d$. It is known that with respect to the ordering $\{E_i\}_{i=0}^d$, formal self-duality implies numerical self-duality. This raises the following question: is it possible that with respect to the ordering $\{E_i\}_{i=0}^d$, $\mathcal X$ is numerically self-dual but not formally self-dual? This is possible as we will show. We display an example of a symmetric association scheme and an ordering the primitive idempotents with respect to which the scheme is numerically self-dual but not formally self-dual. We have the following additional results about self-duality. Assume that $\mathcal X$ is $P$-polynomial. Abstract:We give some new explicit examples of putatively optimal projective spherical designs. i.e., ones for which there is numerical evidence that they are of minimal size. These form continuous families, and so have little apparent symmetry in general, which requires the introduction of new techniques for their construction. New examples of interest include an 11-point spherical (3, 3)-design for R 3 , and a 12-point spherical (2, 2)-design for R 4 given by four Mercedes-Benz frames that lie on equi-isoclinic planes. We also give results of an extensive numerical study to determine the nature of the real algebraic variety of optimal projective real spherical designs, and in particular when it is a single point (a unique design) or corresponds to an infinite family of designs.

Abstract:An association scheme is amorphous if it has as many fusion schemes as possible. Symmetric amorphous schemes were classified by A. V. Ivanov [A. V. Ivanov, Amorphous cellular rings II, in Investigations in algebraic theory of combinatorial objects, pages 39--49. VNIISI, Moscow, Institute for System Studies, 1985] and commutative amorphous schemes were classified by T. Ito, A. Munemasa and M. Yamada [T. Ito, A. Munemasa and M. Yamada, Amorphous association schemes over the Galois rings of characteristic 4, European J. Combin., 12(1991), 513--526]. A scheme is called skew-symmetric if the diagonal relation is the only symmetric relation. We prove the nonexistence of skew-symmetric amorphous schemes with at least 4 classes. We also prove that non-symmetric amorphous schemes are commutative.

Abstract:A regular map is an abstract generalization of a Platonic solid. It describes a group, a topological cell decomposition of a 2-manifold of type {p, q} with only p-gons, such that q of them meet at each vertex in a circular manner, and we have maximal combinatorial symmetry, expressed by the flag transitivity of the symmetry group. On the one hand, we have articles on topological surface embeddings of regular maps by F. Razafindrazaka and K. Polthier, C. Séquin, and J. J. van Wijk.On the other hand, we have articles with polyhedral embeddings of regular maps by J. Bokowski and M. Cuntz, A. Boole Stott, U. Brehm, H. S. M. Coxeter, B. Grünbaum, E. Schulte, and J. M. Wills. The main concern of this partial survey article is to emphasize that all these articles should be seen as contributing to the common body of knowledge in the area of regular map embeddings. This article additionally provides a method for finding symmetrical equivelar polyhedral embeddings of type {3, 7} based on symmetrical graph embeddings on convex surfaces.

Abstract:A problem that is simple to state in the context of spherical geometry, and that seems rather interesting, appears to have been unexamined to date in the mathematical literature. The problem can also be recast as a problem in the real projective plane. The problem on the sphere involves four great circles and their intersections. A substantial claim is made concerning this problem, and subsequently proved by relating the spherical problem to a compelling problem in solid geometry. This latter problem essentially concerns relationships between the angles of a tetrahedron, and has practical applications, particularly in connection with the Perspective 3-Point (Pose) Problem.

Steiner symmetrization on the sphere

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to introduce a generalization of Steiner symmetrization in Euclidean space for spherical space, which is the dual of the Steiner symmetrization in hyperbolic space introduced by Peyerimhoff (J. London Math. Soc. (2) 66: 753-768, 2002). We show that this symmetrization preserves volume in every dimension, and convexity in the spherical plane, but not in dimensions $n > 2$. In addition, we investigate the monotonicity properties of the perimeter and diameter of a set under this process, and find conditions under which the image of a spherically convex disk under a suitable sequence of Steiner symmetrizations converges to a spherical cap. We apply our results to prove a spherical analogue of a theorem of Sas, and to confirm a conjecture of Besau and Werner (Adv. Math. 301: 867-901, 2016) for centrally symmetric spherically convex disks. We also prove a spherical variant of a theorem of Winternitz.
