Abstract:The reported materials based on cerium (CeO2) have a wide range of applications and broad prospects in industrial sectors such as catalysis and fuel cells. In order to examine the wheather the Gd3+ doping amount on CeO2 and oxygen vacancies are relevant to enhance the conductive of Ce1−xGdxO2-δ powders. Ce1−xGdxO2-δ (x = 0.05, x = 0.1, x = 0.15, x = 0.2, x = 0.25, x = 0.3, x = 0.35, x = 0.4) solid electrolyte powders with different doping ratios were synthesized by sol-gel method. The results showed that in the air atmosphere, the oxygen vacancies were most formed when the Gd3+ doping amount was x = 0.2, and the characteristic peak shifted to the high wave number obviously, which indicated that the grains increased and the lattice changed apparently. When the amount of Gd3+ was doping x ≤ 0.25, the value of its characteristic peak remained at 463 cm−1. When x ≥ 0.25, its characteristic peaks gradually shifted to high wavenumber, the results showed that the addition of Gd3+ led to lattice expansion. With the increased of Gd3+ doping amount, the effectiveness on the concentration of defect species was higher than that on the oxygen vacancies. Therefore, it was concluded that the maximum value of oxygen vacancy could be obtained when the doping amount of Gd3+ was x = 0.2, which was the most conducive to the formation of oxygen vacancies, thus becoming an excellent oxygen ion electrolyte.
