Abstract:In recent years, with the increase in environmental awareness, people have become more and more concerned about the effectiveness with which coal burns. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has become an important way of coal elemental analysis because of its uncomplicated sample handling, remote sensing capability, and superior sensitivity in identifying a wide range of elements, including both major and minor constituents, down to trace levels. However, the complexity of its mechanism of action, the experimental environmental factors, and the presence of matrix effects in its measurement spectrum have affected the measurement accuracy. In this paper, on the basis of introducing the experimental process and principle of LIBS, we summarize and analyze the influence of each factor on the LIBS detection medium, summarize the mainstream model analysis algorithms, and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each model. While summarizing the LIBS in media detection in recent years, it aims to provide strong support and guidance for subsequent more in-depth exploration and research.

Quantitative analysis of heat value of coal by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Abstract:The heat value of coal is one of the most important coal properties that affects the operation of coal-fired boilers. The on-line analysis of heat value of coal can provide important reference for optimizing and adjusting the boiler operation in real time. The heat values of bituminous coal samples were quantitatively analyzed by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The 1064 nm laser radiation emitted by a Q-switched Nd: YAG laser was utilized for laser ablation and plasma generation in air. The partial least square (PLS) method and the dominant factor based PLS method were used to improve the measurement accuracy of heat value of coal. In the dominant factor based PLS model, the molecular emissions of C2 and CN were utilized to build the dominant factor model. The coefficient of determination and the root-mean-square error of prediction of the PLS model were 0.94 and 1.46 MJ/kg, respectively; and those values for the dominant factor based PLS model were 0.99 and 1.18 MJ/kg, respectively. The results show that LIBS has great potential for the on-line analysis of heat value of coal.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been used to detect atomic species in various environments. The quantitative analysis (C, H, O, N and S) of representative coal samples are being carried out with LIBS, and the effects of particle size are analyzed. A powerful pulse Nd:YAG laser is focused on the coal sample at atmosphere pressure, and the emission spectra from laser-induced plasmas are measured by time-resolved spectroscopy, and the intensity of analyzed spectral lines is obtained through observing the laser plasma with a delay time of 0.4 μs. The experimental results show that the slope of calibration curve is nearly 1 when the concentration of the analyzed element is relatively low, and the slope of curve is nearly 0.5 when the concentration of C is higher than other elements. In addition, using the calibration-free model without self-absorption effect, the results show that the decreasing of particle size leads to an increase of the plasma temperature.

Abstract:The laboratory method used for coal calorific value measurement has a significant hysteresis. In this paper, an on-site measurement method of coal calorific value based on high power laser rapid ignition is proposed. The effects of oxygen transverse passage velocity, thermal insulation crucible bracket and coal samples on the measurement time, unburned rate and calorific value measurement error are gradually investigated. The experimental results shows that the measurement error of calorific value is within 2% and unburned rate is within 2% at the oxygen transverse passage velocity of 120 mm/s of Huainan bituminous coal. Then the utilization of porous thermal insulation crucible bracket has shown a good performance in heat dissipation to shorten the measurement time without increasing the unburned rate. Then, the effects of coal sample thicknesses, species and particle sizes on calorific value measurement are investigated. Results show that under the coal thickness from 4.2 to 5.4 mm, the calorific value measurement error is within 3%, and the unburned rate is within 2% of Huainan antiminous coal. Finally, the results shows that the method has a good performance on different coal species and particle sizes which the calorific value measurement error is within 5%. This research quantifies the effects of the experimental condition parameters on the measurement of coal calorific value based on laser ignition, which lays the foundation for the subsequent development of online coal calorific value meter.

Abstract:Abstract Although laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), as a fast on-line analysis technology, has great potential and competitiveness in the analysis of chemical composition and proximate analysis results of coal in thermal power plants, the measurement repeatability of LIBS needs to be further improved due to the difficulty in controlling the stability of the generated plasmas at present. In this paper, we propose a novel x-ray fluorescence (XRF) assisted LIBS method for high repeatability analysis of coal quality, which not only inherits the ability of LIBS to directly analyze organic elements such as C and H in coal, but also uses XRF to make up for the lack of stability of LIBS in determining other inorganic ash-forming elements. With the combination of elemental lines in LIBS and XRF spectra, the principal component analysis and the partial least squares are used to establish the prediction model and perform multi-elemental and proximate analysis of coal. Quantitative analysis results show that the relative standard deviation (RSD) of C is 0.15%, the RSDs of other elements are less than 4%, and the standard deviations of calorific value, ash content, sulfur content and volatile matter are 0.11 MJ kg −1 , 0.17%, 0.79% and 0.41% respectively, indicating that the method has good repeatability in determination of coal quality. This work is helpful to accelerate the development of LIBS in the field of rapid measurement of coal entering the power plant and on-line monitoring of coal entering the furnace.

Abstract:Coal analysis is of great importance to improve coal combustion/utilization efficiency and operation safety and to reduce pollution. In this work, we develop a LIBS system for at-line coal analysis, which can pre-treat coal blocks into pressed pellets, acquire sample spectra and quantify coal properties automatically and continuously. A series of techniques are integrated in the system, including laser energy monitor and control, plasma modulation and collinear spectra collection. Moreover, the system has an integrated circuit board that is designed to precisely control the time-sequence of the hardware components; the overall design of the system ensures environmental factors are stabilised. These design considerations improve raw signal repeatability and signal-tonoise ratio. Furthermore, to improve the quantification accuracy without the use of LIBS physics knowledge, a new machine learning method is proposed, namely synergic regression (SR), which embeds a linear model in nonlinear regression. It inherits the high accuracy of nonlinear methods whilst being able to explain how specific variables contribute to the prediction. The system was demonstrated and evaluated in a real power plant for 10 weeks. The average prediction errors of calorific value (MJ/kg), sulphur (%) and volatile (%) were 0.299, 0.077 and 0.590, respectively. The evaluation demonstrated that the developed LIBS system meets the industry standards for at-line and in-situ coal analysis. Therefore, the LIBS system has significant potential impact on practices in coal utilization and similar industrial processes.

Abstract:Determination of coal quality plays a major role in coal-fired power plants and coal producers for optimizing the utilization efficiency and controlling the quality. In this work, a rapid coal analyzer based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was developed for rapid quality analysis of pulverized coal. The structure of the LIBS apparatus was introduced in detail. To avoid time-consuming and complicated sample preparation, a pulverized feeding machine was designed to form a continuously stable coal particle flow. The standard deviation (SD) of characteristic peaks was used to estimate the spectral valid data in this experiment. Coupled with cluster analysis, artificial neural networks and genetic algorithm are employed as a nonlinear regression method in order to indicate the relationship between coal quality and the corresponding plasma spectra. It is shown that the average absolute error of ash, volatile matter, fixed carbon, and gross calorific value for the validation set is 0.82%, 0.85%, 0.96%, and 0.48 MJ/kg. The average standard deviation of repeated samples is 1.64%, 0.92%, 1.08%, and 0.86 MJ/kg, showing a high sample-to-sample repeatability. This rapid coal analyzer is capable of performing reliable and accurate analysis of coal quality.

Measurement and Numerical Simulation of Ultrafine Particle Size Distribution in the Early Stage of High-Sodium Lignite Combustion

Abstract:The formation of ultrafine particulate matter in the early stage of high-sodium lignite combustion was quantitatively investigated in a downward Hencken flat-flame burner under two ambiences of 1200K and 1500K. Spatially resolved measurement of the ultrafine particle size distributions (PSDs) was made by using a scanning mobility particle sizer with a high sensitivity in the 4.45–156.8nm size range. The experimental results indicate that, during the residence time of coal particles from ∼20 ms to ∼40 ms, the number PSDs under 1200K exhibit bi-modal while those under 1500K keep uni-modal. As time is evolved, the detected peak of ultrafine particles moves from 10.62nm to 80.54nm under 1200K, while that from 10.76nm to 38.46nm under 1500K. Then, a physico-chemical mechanism responsible for the incipient formation of ultrafine particles during high-sodium lignite combustion was developed and computed by solving a discrete-sectional population balance model. The number PSDs of ultrafine particles and the dynamic behavior of Na release measured in experiments are consistent with the simulation results. It is further divulged that the intrinsic cause of the PSD transition between different ambient temperatures is the high concentration of newly formed particles, instead of the enhanced collision frequency.
A hybrid quantification model and its application for coal analysis using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy

Abstract:The low sample-to-sample reproducibility of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is the most critical obstacle to wide commercialization of the technology. Averaging multi-pulse normalized spectra is the only applied method to improve the sample-to-sample reproducibility; however, the method can only improve the reproducibility to some extent because the averaging process can only eliminate random noise and has no effect on non-random noise, and because normalization can only partially and indirectly remove the signal fluctuations. In addition, the measurement accuracy of LIBS is also limited due to matrix effects as well as signal uncertainty. In this work, we propose a set method to improve both precision (sample-to-sample reproducibility) and accuracy for LIBS quantification. The method includes three steps: (1) the intensities of all spectral lines from every single pulse are converted to a standard state value using a "spectrum standardization" method to reduce the measurement uncertainties to acceptable levels; (2) the standardized spectra are compared with a large spectral database to check whether the current sample is a new sample or is already in the database with known composition/property information; and (3) if the sample is found to be a new sample, a dominant factor based partial least square (PLS) model is applied to provide quantitative analytical results, and the new standardized spectral information and analytical results are inserted into the spectrum database, making the database self-adaptable for future measurements; while if the sample is found to be already in the database, the analytical results are directly obtained from the database. The proposed method was applied for coal analysis. The results showed that the relative standard deviation (RSD) of carbon for different measurements of the same sample is 0.3%, proving that LIBS is able to provide high reproducibility, at least for coal analysis applications. The average measurement errors for carbon, hydrogen, volatiles, ash and heat values are 0.42%, 0.05%, 0.07%, 0.17% and 0.07 MJ kg(-1), respectively, and all of these measurement accuracies fully meet the requirements of the national standard for coal analyses using traditional chemical processing methods. This is the first quantitative application of LIBS with real industrial requirements, and the present work proves the feasibility of LIBS for accurate quantification from a technical point of view.
Dynamic behaviors of the sodium, calcium and iron release during coal combustion using multi-point LIBS

Abstract:A novel application of multi-point LIBS was used to investigate the mineral release for dispersed-particle streams during coal combustion in an enclosed laminar flow reactor. A 1064 nm Nd: YAG laser was used to ablate the pulverized coal in air-like combustion environments at atmospheric pressure. The electron temperature (Te) and electron density (Ne) were calculated to evaluate the characteristics of the laser-induced plasma along the height from the burner surface, and LS-coupling method was further used to distinguish whether self-absorption occurred. The particle temperature was measured by a two-color pyrometer, and the time-resolved behaviors of Na, Ca and Fe along with the combustion process were measured by LIBS. Results show that the Te and Ne of laser-induced plasmas decreased with the flow of coal flame upon devolatilization, and became relatively stable during char combustion. There was little atomic self-absorption during char-combustion process, which provided theoretical support for quantitative combustion analysis. The Na release, mainly atomic forms, decreased with the particle flow upon devolatilization and showed a trend from rise to decline following devolatilization. The Fe and Ca was rarely released upon devolatilization. During char combustion, the Ca have a similar behavior to Na release, while the Fe increased and then remained constant. The temperature dependent kinetics of the Na and Ca release rate was found to obey an Arrhenius expression. The kinetics of Na and Ca atomic release determined by a first-order model had the pre-exponential factor of 101.16 and 102.67 s−1 and the activation energy of 87.2 and 150.8 kJ/mol, respectively.

Abstract:Fast or online coal property analysis would greatly improve coal pricing reliability and combustion optimization for power generation, especially in China. A non-linearized multivariate dominant factor based partial least square (PLS) model was applied to analyze coal properties through laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The dominant factor explicitly modeled the direct correlation between coal property and spectral line intensities, whereas residual errors were corrected by PLS method with full spectral information. The results demonstrated an overall improvement over conventional PLS method for ash content, volatile content, and calorific value measurement. For example, the root mean square error of prediction of calorific value was decreased from 1.63 MJ kg(-1) to 1.33 MJ kg(-1); and the average relative error of all samples was reduced from 3.55% to 2.71%. Although current LIBS application results for coal proximate analysis have not met the national standard, LIBS is shown to be fully capable of providing useful information for coal combustion optimization and reliable references for coal pricing, showing LIBS has great potential for coal property analysis for the power generation industry.

Abstract:Abstract Coal's calorific value and carbon content are crucial in calculating carbon emissions. Accurately detecting these two indicators is of great significance for carbon accounting. In this study, we developed a compact coal quality rapid detection integrated machine based on laser‐induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), which can directly measure coal particle flow. A partial least squares model, based on data set selection according to cluster analysis results, was applied to establish the relationship between coal quality and plasma spectra. The R 2 of the calorific value is .93, the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) is 0.41 MJ/kg, and the mean absolute error (MAE) is 0.33 MJ/kg. The R 2 of carbon content is .94, the RMSEP is 0.97%, and the MAE is 0.91%. These results indicated that the developed compact coal quality rapid detection integrated machine could conduct precise coal quality analysis in real time.

Abstract:With massive coal consumption in the industry, the increasing requirements for improving combustion efficiency and environmental protection raise widespread interests. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) shows the merits of high-speed, minimally destructive, simple preparation, etc. Combining it with the analytical chemistry methods have become a promising way for coal analysis. In this work, LIBS instruments for collecting coal spectra, pretreatment methods for coal samples, preprocessing of coal data, and analytical chemistry methods for coal analysis were summarized. Moreover, LIBS applications, including coal ranks, combustion efficiency, and environmental protection, are provided. Finally, this review proposes a description of limitations and the potential developing trend for this topic.

Abstract:Online measurement of carbon content of coal is important for coal-fired power plants to realize the combustion optimization of coal-fired boilers. Given that the measurement of carbon content of coal using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) suffers from low measurement accuracy because of matrix effects, our previous study has proposed a combination model to improve the measurement accuracy of carbon content of coal. The spatial confinement method, which utilizes the spectral emissions of laser-induced plasmas spatially confined by cavities for quantitative analysis, has potential to improve quantitative analysis performance. In the present study, the combination model was used for coal measurement with cylindrical cavity confinement to further improve the measurement accuracy of carbon content of coal. Results showed that measurement accuracy was improved when the combination model was used with spatial confinement method. The coefficient of determination, root-mean-square error of prediction, average relative error, and average absolute error for the combination model with cylindrical cavity confinement were 0.99, 1.35%, 1.66%, and 1.08%, respectively, whereas values for the combination model without cylindrical cavity confinement were 0.99, 1.63%, 1.82%, and 1.27%, respectively. This is the first time that the average absolute error of carbon measurement for coal analysis has achieved close to 1.0% using LIBS, which is the critical requirement set for traditional chemical processing method by Chinese national standard. These results indicated that LIBS had significant application potential for coal analysis.

Abstract:One of the major challenges regarding measuring chemical structures with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is that, it is difficult to track the source of organic components from atomic spectra since these structures have a similar elemental composition. However, LIBS molecular emissions (C 2 , CN, etc.) provide a possibility to investigate these similar compositions. In the present study, an experimental investigation was conducted to diagnose the structural evolution during coal combustion. The structural evolution of char particles was also evaluated as a reference using offline Raman spectroscopy. The significance of minerals on plasma emission was investigated based on plasmas of raw and demineralized coals. As combustion progresses, coal particles show the overall dissipation of active structures such as G r , V L , and V r bands, and the aromatization of char structures. The minerals in coal may increase the free–free bremsstrahlung and free–bound recombination events, resulting in a significant continuous baseline. Presence of minerals also reduces the breakdown threshold and enhances the LIBS's emissions. The char's structural transformation is regarded to be correlated with the rotational temperature ( T rot ) of CN molecules of LIBS's emissions. The mathematical correlations of linear fitting ( R 2 : 0.94) and exponential fitting ( R 2 : 0.99) exist between the drift coefficient and the T rot . This structural transformation might change the LIP's CN formation mechanism and lead to the T rot reduction.

Abstract:The combustion of fuels in industries is one of the sources of greenhouse gases, posing a considerable threat to human health and the natural environment. The monitoring of the combustion process and the measurement of combustion degrees, therefore, are crucial and significant. In this work, an experimental system was developed based on Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Charcoals with different combustion degrees were taken as samples, and in the LIBS spectra of charcoals, the characteristic line of C and the molecular bands of CN and CaO were observed. Moreover, a univariate calibration model based on the exponential fitting curve was constructed to predict the combustion degree according to the variation of the C I line intensity under different combustion degrees. Furthermore, different algorithms including support vector machine (SVM), partial least squares (PLS), random forest (RF), and convolutional neural network (CNN) were applied to establish the multivariate calibration model, and the prediction performance was compared according to the 10-fold cross-validation. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) was used to optimize hyperparameters of the selected SVM-based multivariate calibration model. Principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were employed to extract spectral features and reduce dimensions for the improvement of the model's performance, with the final root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) and mean relative error (MRE) of the LDA-PSO-SVM calibration model of 0.035 and 3.877%, respectively. The results prove feasible to realize the real-time determination of combustion degree to control carbon emissions and monitor carbon concentration through the LIBS-based method with machine learning, which also provides new ideas for the application of LIBS in the atmospheric field.

Abstract:In face of the complicated and changeable coal in Chinese power stations,the on-line measurement of coal elemental composition is extremely significant in terms of enhancing the safety and efficiency of boilers as well as lowering the waste emission during operation.In this work,laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was applied to coal quality measurement.Laser wavelength was changed as 355,532 and 1 064 nm to investigate the influence on coal LIBS features,including plasma time evolution and the spectral lines intensity-time characteristics of different elements.Energy threshold for shielding effect was also tested to verify how it varies with laser wavelengths.Additionally,coal LIBS spectrum was analyzed under different laser wavelengths.It has been proven by experiments that higher intensity of coal LIBS spectrum and energy threshold can be easily achieved when using laser of 532 nm,making it a fantastic energy source for coal LIBS tests.Results of these experiments serve to guide the industrial application of LIBS technology in the field of coal quality measurement.
Fast measurement of coking properties of coal using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy

Abstract:Fast measurement of caking index (G) and maximum thickness of plastic layer (Y) of coal is urgently needed for process optimization in coking industry to improve coke quality and reduce CO2 and pollution emission. Till now, there has not been any report on fast determination of these two coal property parameters yet. In the present work, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was utilized for the fast measurement of G and Y value as the first time. A dominant factor based partial least square (PLS) model combined with variable selection was applied to improve measurement performance using 189 coal samples. Thirteen important lines which physically correlate with G and Y were chosen in establishing the dominant factor model, and the residual errors were further corrected by PLS together with variable selection to avoid noise overfitting. The proposed model showed satisfactory quantitative measurement of G and Y, which were very close to the Chinese national standard based on traditional laboratory method. Compared with the traditional PLS model, the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) for G value was reduced from 5.117 to 4.197, with an improvement of 17.9% relatively. The RMSEP for Y value was reduced from 1.588 to 1.036, with an improvement of 34.7% relatively. The improvement brought by the dominant factor model and the variable selection method was discussed in detail. Results showed that LIBS is capable of fast measurement of the values of G and Y of coal for coke industry.

Abstract:Measurement of coal carbon content using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is limited by its low precision and accuracy. A modified spectrum standardization method was proposed to achieve both reproducible and accurate results for the quantitative analysis of carbon content in coal using LIBS. The proposed method used the molecular emissions of diatomic carbon (C 2 ) and cyanide (CN) to compensate for the diminution of atomic carbon emissions in high volatile content coal samples caused by matrix effect. The compensated carbon line intensities were further converted into an assumed standard state with standard plasma temperature, electron number density, and total number density of carbon, under which the carbon line intensity is proportional to its concentration in the coal samples. To obtain better compensation for fluctuations of total carbon number density, the segmental spectral area was used and an iterative algorithm was applied that is different from our previous spectrum standardization calculations. The modified spectrum standardization model was applied to the measurement of carbon content in 24 bituminous coal samples. The results demonstrate that the proposed method has superior performance over the generally applied normalization methods. The average relative standard deviation was 3.21%, the coefficient of determination was 0.90, the root mean square error of prediction was 2.24%, and the average maximum relative error for the modified model was 12.18%, showing an overall improvement over the corresponding values for the normalization with segmental spectrum area, 6.00%, 0.75, 3.77%, and 15.40%, respectively.
