Abstract: Time-resolved spectra are often recorded in modern Thomson scattering experiments of laser-produced plasmas. In this essay, we discuss the exact meaning of time-resolved spectra output from a grating spectrometer. Our calculations show that the streak image of a Thomson scattering spectrum does not directly give the time-resolved plasma parameters.

Abstract:Time-resolved spectra are often recorded in optical Thomson scattering experiments of laser-produced plasmas. In this article, the meaning of time-resolved spectrum output from a grating spectrometer is examined. Our results show that the recorded signal is indeed a convolution of the response function of the dispersion element and the product of the instant local dynamic form factor and electron density when the plasma evolves slowly; the plasma varies very little in the time duration of the scattering light passing through the scattering volume.

Abstract:Developing of a time-resolved three-channel soft X-ray spectrometer is reported，and the operating principle and the parameters of spectrometer designed in three energy bands of 210eV，420eV and 900eV are presented specially. On the ShenGuang-Ⅱ high power laser facility，the spectrometer was applied in experiments with good results. This work is the first attempt in China to construct a spectrometer which couples planar mirrors and filters to X-ray streaked camera，and which is capable of measuring X-ray signal with spatial- and temporal-resolution in three sub-Kev energy channels simultaneously. Experimental results show that by combining X-ray reflector and filter，the spectrometer has achieved enery resolution of 5 and temporal resolution ability of 10 ps.
Use of Photoelectron Energy Spectrum Transfer Equation for the Measurement of a Narrowband XUV Pulse

Abstract:To study the time evolution of a molecular state in an ultra-fast chemical reaction, the use of shorter pulses with higher photon energy and narrower bandwidth for both pump and probe is necessary. However, quick and precise measurement of their detailed time structures is a challenge. Over the last decade, great efforts have been made to measure an attosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulse. To date, several methods have been developed to measure the pulse duration and completely reconstruct it. The attosecond spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER) and attosecond frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) techniques are often used. However, these methods use state-of-the-art experimental set-ups and complicated data analysis procedures. To develop attosecond metrology for practical use (e.g. timing, measurement, evaluation, calibration, optimization, pumping, probing), we propose a quick and analytical method to precisely observe an attosecond XUV pulse with laser-assisted photo-ionization. The method is based on determining the laser-related phase of each streaked electron and using a transfer equation for one-step pulse reconstruction without any time-resolved measurements, iterative calculations, or data fitting procedures. Temporal errors of the pulse reconstruction are calculated from the XUV bandwidth. Because the transfer equation establishes a direct connection between the XUV pulse properties, the crucial laser parameters (peak intensity, phase, carrier envelope phase), the atomic ionization potential, and the measured photoelectron energy spectrum, we can use it to study any one of these properties from other known information and probe the dynamic processes of an ultra-fast reaction.

Abstract:Based on the collisionless, Maxewellian Thomson theory, a program is developed for carefully analyzing the influence of experimental set-up and plasma gradients and electron drifts on Thomson scattering spectrum. Calculations show that spectra resolution, collection angle, drift velocity and plasma gradient only have minor effects on diagnostics, so we can conveniently ignore these in fitting the spectrum. An important result is that signal-to-noise ratio can be enhanced by increasing the collection angle of the experimental system. The uncertainty of the scattering parameter can strongly affect the inferred plasma parameters when it is less than 3 This problem could be solved by choosing a smaller scattering angle or by accurately measuring the plasmas density.

Abstract:In order to mitigate the effect of the strong electromagnetic pulse, which produces laser-plasma interactions, we designed a new streaked X-ray spectrometer （SXS） enclosed within a well-sealed, electromag- netic interference-free cavity. The SXS can cover a wide selection of spectral windows using interchangeable Bragg crystals and by appropriate adjustment of the Bragg angle. The SXS has been used to observe time-re- solved X-ray spectrum in the 2.5 keV to 3.5 keV photon-energy range, resulting in a demonstrated spectral res- olution of about 13 at 2960 eV with a time resolution of 10 ps. The observed time and spectral resolutions dem- onstrate the applicability of the SXS for studies of laser-produced plasmas.

Abstract:As Thomson scattering x-ray sources based on the collision of intense laser and relativistic electrons have drawn much attention in various scientific fields, there is an increasing demand for the effective methods to reconstruct the spectrum information of the ultra-short and high-intensity x-ray pulses. In this paper, a precise spectrum measurement method for the Thomson scattering x-ray sources was proposed with the diffraction of a Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG) crystal and was demonstrated at the Tsinghua Thomson scattering X-ray source. The x-ray pulse is diffracted by a 15 mm (L) ×15 mm (H)× 1 mm (D) HOPG crystal with 1° mosaic spread. By analyzing the diffraction pattern, both x-ray peak energies and energy spectral bandwidths at different polar angles can be reconstructed, which agree well with the theoretical value and simulation. The higher integral reflectivity of the HOPG crystal makes this method possible for single-shot measurement.

Abstract:Thomson scattering of laser light is one of the most fundamental diagnostics of plasma density, temperature and magnetic fields. It relies on the assumption that the properties in the probed volume are homogeneous and constant during the probing time. On the other hand, laboratory plasmas are seldom uniform and homogeneous on the temporal and spatial dimensions over which data is collected. This is partic- ularly true for laser-produced high-energy-density matter, which often exhibits steep gradients in temperature, density and pressure, on a scale determined by the laser focus. Here, we discuss the modification of the cross section for Thomson scattering in fully-ionized media exhibiting steep spatial inhomogeneities and/or fast temporal fluctuations. We show that the predicted Thomson scattering spectra are greatly altered compared to the uniform case, and may even lead to violations of detailed balance. Therefore, careful interpretation of the spectra is necessary for spatially or temporally inhomogeneous systems.

Abstract:An instrument for time-resolved spectroscopy with an effective time resolution capability of 2×10−7 sec has been built using a pulsed photomultiplier and the stroboscopic time resolution technique. Because of the higher voltages allowable in pulsed operation, the photomultiplier gain is found to be increased by more than two orders of magnitude and the dark current is reduced by a factor of about five. Therefore, the apparatus is very useful for analyzing weak fluorescence and absorption spectra of microsecond duration. Fluorescence rise and decay times of fractions of a microsecond have also been measured. The instrument was found to be very suitable for analyzing the fluorescence properties of rare-earth chelate laser materials.

Abstract:With a 263.3 nm probe laser beam, the Thomson scattering (TS) spectra are measured at the distance from the surface of gold disc targets as close as 50μm. All of the TS spectra become narrower with time, which indicates the overall drop of plasma temperature as the high-Z plasmas blow off. The experimental data show that there are distinct characteristics between the inner region (i.e., 50 and 100μm away from target surface) and the outer region. The gradient of the electron temperature in outer region is toward the target and becomes opposite to that in the inner region. The asymmetries of the TS spectra in the inner region are in good agreement with calculation based on the Spitzer–Härm theory. In the outer region, however, the discrepancies between the experiments and calculations are significant, which may be a hint that the electron energy transport becomes flux limited or nonlocal in this region.

Abstract:Streaking of photoelectrons with optical lasers has been widely used for temporal characterization of attosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses. Recently, this technique has been adapted to characterize femtosecond x-ray pulses in free-electron lasers with the streaking imprinted by farinfrared and Terahertz (THz) pulses. Here, we report successful implementation of THz streaking for time-stamping of an ultrashort relativistic electron beam of which the energy is several orders of magnitude higher than photoelectrons. Such ability is especially important for MeV ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) applications where electron beams with a few femtosecond pulse width may be obtained with longitudinal compression while the arrival time may fluctuate at a much larger time scale. Using this laser-driven THz streaking technique, the arrival time of an ultrashort electron beam with 6 fs (rms) pulse width has been determined with 1.5 fs (rms) accuracy. Furthermore, we have proposed and demonstrated a non-invasive method for correction of the timing jitter with femtosecond accuracy through measurement of the compressed beam energy, which may allow one to advance UED towards sub-10 fs frontier far beyond the ~100 fs (rms) jitter.

Abstract:An equation is given to study the time dependence of the Fresnel diffraction field of a grating illuminated by an ultrashort pulsed-laser beam. Through numerical calculation, we find the temporal Talbot effect is both time-dependent and distance-dependent. For the width of the input pulse Delta tau within a few decade femtoseconds, the shorter Talbot distance, and /or the longer length of the input pulse, the more similar the outline of the temporal intensity distribution to that of the input pulse. While for Delta tau within a few thousand femtoseconds, the outline of the temporal intensity distribution is almost the same as that of the input pulse except for a time-delay.

Abstract:This tutorial provides an overview on the theory of attosecond streaking, a pump-probe scheme to extract timing information of ionization processes that has been widely used in the past decade. Emphasis is put on the origin of the Coulomb-laser-coupling (CLC) term, which is crucial in the interpretation of streaking delays. Having gained a proper understanding of how the CLC terms in various publications relate to each other, we will be able to analyze in which regime the streaking delay can be split into a measurement-induced CLC term and a `pure' ionization delay and under which conditions this splitting may break down. Thus we address the long-standing question of the validity of the widely applied interpretation of the streaking delay as a sum of the CLC term and a `pure' ionization delay.

Sinusoidal Transmission Grating Spectrometer for EUV Measure

Abstract:Spectral measurements play a vital role in understanding laser-plasma interactions. The ability to accurately measure the spectrum of radiation sources is crucial for unraveling the underlying physics. In this article, we introduce a novel approach that significantly enhances the efficiency of binary Sinusoidal Transmission Grating Spectrometers (STGS). The grating was tailored especially for Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) measurements. The new design, High Contrast Sinusoidal Transmission Grating (HCSTG), not only suppresses high diffraction orders and retains the advantageous properties of previous designs but also exhibits a fourfold improvement in first-order efficiency. In addition, the HCSTG offers exceptional purity in the first order due to effectively eliminating half-order contributions from the diffraction pattern. The HCSTG spectrometer was employed to measure the emission of laser-produced Sn plasma in the 1-50 nm spectral range, achieving spectral resolution of $\lambda/\Delta\lambda=60$. We provide a comprehensive analysis comparing the diffraction patterns of different STGs, highlighting the advantages offered by the HCSTG design. This novel, enhanced efficiency HCSTG spectrometer, opens new possibilities for accurate and sensitive EUV spectral measurements.

Femtosecond dynamics on the nanoscale of intense laser-induced grating plasma

Abstract:The complex interaction dynamics of intense femtosecond (fs) pulses and their picosecond (ps)-long leading edge with nanostructured solids occur at both the nanometer and the femtosecond scales, making them extremely difficult to measure directly. Here, we present pump-probe-based measurements that capture the ultrafast evolution of relativistically intense laser-driven grating plasma on fs time and nanometer spatial scales. We measure the transient reflectivity and spectrum of the scattered or diffracted UV-probe pulses from the grating structures with 100s of fs resolution. Our measurements capture the initial onset of the solid-to-plasma transition and the subsequent grating plasma expansion, a few ps before the peak of the intense fs pulse. We measure the instantaneous position of the electron critical surface, its velocity, and its acceleration, which are very crucial for fundamental understanding and applications in ion/electron acceleration and high harmonic generation, while also providing valuable benchmarks for simulations. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations corroborate the observations well offering further insight into this process.

Abstract:We present a detailed methodology for (i) correctly configuring a streak camera to capture raw picosecond two-photon absorption laser induced fluorescence signals (ps-TALIF) of H-atom in low- and atmospheric-pressure plasmas, and (ii) properly processing the recorded raw experimental data with a dedicated mathematical signal processing method to infer actual ps-TALIF signals of H-atom. The goal is the accurate determination of the decay time of the recorded ps-TALIF signals of H-atom. A ps-laser is used to excite atomic hydrogen produced in both plasmas and the raw fluorescence signals are detected by the streak camera using different time windows/ranges (TR). It is shown that the choice of the TR affects the shapes and the decay times of the recorded raw TALIF signals. This is defined as the instrumental function of the streak camera and has a Gaussian profile as determined by recording the ultrafast laser pulse at different TR. To remove this instrumental distortion and extract the actual shape of the TALIF signals, the captured raw TALIF signals were fitted using the mathematical procedure developed in this study, which involved an exponentially modified Gaussian function. The application of our methodology leads to more reliable measurements of hydrogen atoms decay times after respecting the following acquisition conditions: (i) the TR of the streak camera should be sufficiently large to capture the complete (raw) TALIF signal, and (ii) the time width of the instrumental function of the streak camera should be as small as possible compared to the actual decay time of the fluorescence, while ensuring an optimal signal-to-noise ratio. This work demonstrates the remarkable potential of the combination of ps-TALIF and streak cameras in state-of-the-art optical plasma diagnostics.

Abstract:We present time-resolved spectral measurements of the X-ray lines emitted from Mg microtube targets. The X-ray streak-camera record can clearly demonstrate the principle of three-body recombination mechanism; first to create a high-density plasma column confined in the microtube and then to cool the high-density plasma column rapidly to form a strong nonequilibrium recombination region, where strong population inversion occurs.

Abstract:The time-resolved spectra of the air-breakdown plasma generated by the nanosecond pulsed 1064 nm beam of a Nd : YAG laser are investigated by using a PI-MAX-II ICCD with nano-time-resolved features. The results show that the laser-induced plasma spectrum in atmospheric environment is widely distributed in a range of 300-900 nm, and it is superimposed by continuous spectra and sharp line spectra. The spectral lines of oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen are identified according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology database of atomic emission. The intuitive figures of laser-induced breakdown atmospheric plasma spectra with time resolution are given. The electron temperature and electron density are calculated according to the emission spectra. The results have scientific significance for improving the accuracy and precision of the on-line measurement in the atmospheric environment.

Abstract:A new feature in the Thomson scattering spectrum is observed from a laser-produced aluminium plasma, which may be the Thomson scattering off entropy waves in the plasma. Such a feature is only observable when the energy of the heater beam is low enough.

Abstract:The dynamics of low-energy photoelectrons (PEs) ionized by a single attosecond pulse in the presence of an intense infrared (IR) laser field is investigated. Whereas attosecond streaking usually involves momentum shifts of high-energy PEs, when PEs have low initial kinetic energies, the IR field can control the continuum-electron dynamics by inducing PE scattering from the residual ion. A semiclassical model is used to show that particular PE trajectories in the continuum involving electron-ion scattering explain the interference patterns exhibited in the low-energy PE spectrum. We confirm the effects of the trajectories by means of a full quantum simulation.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a Terahertz (THz) oscilloscope for recording time information of an ultrashort electron beam. By injecting a laser-driven THz pulse with circular polarization into a dielectric tube, the electron beam is swept helically such that the time information is uniformly encoded into the angular distribution that allows one to characterize both the temporal profile and timing jitter of an electron beam. The dynamic range of the measurement in such a configuration is significantly increased compared to deflection with a linearly polarized THz pulse. With this THz oscilloscope, nearly 50-fold longitudinal compression of a relativistic electron beam to about 15 fs (rms) is directly visualized with its arrival time determined with 3 fs accuracy. This technique bridges the gap between streaking of photoelectrons with optical lasers and deflection of relativistic electron beams with radio-frequency deflectors, and should have wide applications in many ultrashort electron beam based facilities.
