Abstract:Self-assembled 3D flower-like hierarchical spheres composed of small nanosheets and nanobelts of manganese oxide were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method at 125°C and 200°C, respectively in aqueous solution, without the assistance of any templates and SDAs. A mechanism involving two competitive factors, temperature and Coulomb interaction, was proposed to understand their formation. Morphology control of the product can be easily achieved by adjusting the reaction temperature according to this mechanism, which was supported by other parallel experiments. The product was characterized by XRD, TEM, FESEM and BET surface area analysis was also carried out.

Abstract:Monodisperse manganese oxide flowerlike nanostructures have been prepared facilely at low temperature and ambient atmosphere. The effect of the reaction time on the microstructure and morphology is observed systemically by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Meanwhile, the possible formation mechanism of the flowerlike nanostructures has been proposed and discussed. It is also found that the reaction temperature has great influences on the morphology of these unique nanostructures. The results of nitrogen adsorption-desorption experiments and electrochemical measurements show that the product obtained at 40 degrees C for 8 h has large specific Surface area, uniform pore size distribution, and excellent capacitance performance, which make it a potential supercapacitor electrode material.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline trimanganese tetroxide (Mn3O4) has been successfully synthesized by a solvothermal reaction in which KMnO4 is reduced by CH3OH or CH3CH2OH under pressure. Alcohol also served as the solvent in the method. The reaction temperature can be as low as 80–100°C. Transmission electron micrographs and X-ray powder diffraction patterns show that the average particle sizes are 9–15 nm. From the electron spin resonance (ESR) pattern, hyperfine structure (six absorption peaks of ESR) of Mn2+ ion is observed on the main line of Mn3+. The mechanism for the formation of crystalline Mn3O4 is proposed.

Abstract:Single-crystal MnWO4 nanowires were successfully prepared for the first time via a simple hydrothermal method without any surfactants. The as-prepared products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The effect of pH value, precursor, and reaction temperature on the formation of MnWO4 nanocrystals was investigated. The precursor was found to be vital to the formation of MnWO4 nanowires. It is rational to expect that one-dimensional nanostructures of other tungstates may also be synthesized by this simple method.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:A lot of effort has been focused on the integration of nanorods/nanowire as building blocks into three-dimensional (3D) complex superstructures. But, the development of simple and effective methods for creating novel assemblies of self-supported patterns of hierarchical architectures to designed materials using a suitable chemical method is important to technology and remains an attractive, but elusive goal.RESULTS:The hierarchical structure of Mn3O4 with radiated spherulitic nanorods was prepared via a simple solution-based coordinated route in the presence of macrocycle polyamine, hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-4,11-diene (CT) with the assistance of thiourea as an additive.CONCLUSION:This approach opens a new and facile route for the morphogenesis of Mn3O4 material and it might be extended as a novel synthetic method for the synthesis of other inorganic semiconducting nanomaterials such as metal chalcogenide semiconductors with novel morphology and complex form, since it has been shown that thiourea can be used as an effective additive and the number of such water-soluble macrocyclic polyamines also makes it possible to provide various kinds of ligands for different metals in homogeneous water system.

Abstract:A novel route was used to prepare ultrafine powders of MnO2, i.e. the solid state reaction of KMnO4 with manganese acetate or manganese chloride at or near room temperature. The results of XPS and chemical analysis revealed that the main valence state of synthesized manganese oxides was 4. TEM and XRD showed that the average particle sizes were in the range 10–50nm with two kinds of shapes: acicular and spherical; and the crystalline form was α+δ-phase. It has been confirmed that the existence of crystalline water was the key factor for the occurrence of the solid phase preparation of nano-particles at low temperature. It has also established that the discharge performance of nano-sized MnO2 electrode was different from that of normal-sized MnO2 electrode.

Abstract:On basis of the redox reaction between MnO4− and Mn2+, a facile hydrothermal method combined with the adjustment of pH value in the reaction system has been employed to synthesize single-crystal γ-MnOOH nanorods, and square-like Mn3O4 nanoparticles. Additionally, single-crystalline β-MnO2 and Mn2O3 nanorods can be obtained after subsequent calcinations of the as-prepared γ-MnOOH nanostructures at 300°C and 600°C, respectively. Furthermore, electrochemical property of as-obtained β-MnO2 is also studied.

Abstract:Walls that build themselves: Long-range nanowalls assemble with uniform tetragonal Mn3O4 nanoparticles by a simple solution-phase synthesis method under low temperature and surfactant-free conditions (see image). The magnetization of the sample is investigated. A mechanism for formation of the wall-like crystals is suggested. These high-quality single-crystalline Mn3O4 nanopatterns hold great potential for fundamental studies of their properties as well as for applications in nanodevices.

Abstract:A facile method was developed to synthesize γ-MnO2 with different structures and surface properties in this paper. γ-MnO2 was prepared by oxidation of MnSO4 with Na2S2O8 at 90°C for 2.0 h. γ-MnO2 formed at initial pH 1.0 (M1) and 8.5 (M2) was composed of MnO1.93·0.23H2O and MnO1.96·0.18H2O, respectively. The higher ratio of pyrolusite in M2 (Pr=43.90%) than that in M1 (Pr=24.86%) indicated that compared with M1, M2 would absorb more protons since the planar oxygen atoms in pyrolusite were incompletely coordinated and liable to absorb the protons. Meanwhile, the higher oxidation valence of Mn in M2 than that in M1 revealed that the Mn atoms in M2 were more liable to draw the electron density from the surface oxygen atoms in hydroxyl groups. The structural and compositional differences between M1 and M2 were the major reasons why M2 possessed a higher surface potential and a weaker ability to absorb Zn2+ ions.

Abstract:The controlled synthesis of mixed crystallographic phase Mn2O3/Mn3O4 sponge material by varying heating rates and isothermal segments provides valuable information about the morphological and physical properties of the obtained sample. The well-characterized Mn2O3/Mn3O4 sponge and applicability of difference in reactivity of H2 and CO2 desorbed during the synthesis provide new developments in the synthesis of metal oxide materials with unique morphological and surface properties. We report the preparation of a Mn2O3/Mn3O4 sponge using a metal nitrate salt, water, and Dextran, a biopolymer consisting of glucose monomers. The Mn2O3/Mn3O4 sponge prepared at 1 °C·min-1 heating rate to 500 °C and held isothermally for 1 h consisted of large mesopores-macropores (25.5 nm, pore diameter) and a pore volume of 0.413 mL/g. Furthermore, the prepared Mn2O3/Mn3O4 and 5 mol %-Fe-Mn2O3/Mn3O4 sponges provide potential avenues in the development of solid-state catalyst materials for alcohol and amine oxidation reactions.

Abstract:Large-scale gamma-MnOOH and beta-MnO2, nanorods have been synthesized via the hydrothermal process assisted with CTAB at 200 degrees C for 20 h using MnSO4 and NaOH as source and subsequent calcination of gamma-MnOOH nanorods at 300 degrees C for 3 h, respectively. The characterization of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) indicate that the gamma-MnOOH and beta-MnO2 nanorods prepared are monoclinic and tetragonal single crystalline, respectively. Abstract:A series of MnO2 unique nanostructures were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method with microwave-assisted procedures. A novel nanostructure formation mechanism has been proposed, that MnO6 octahedral nuclei and molecular layers can be rearranged into different nanostructured morphologies by restacking and splitting, and then clasping, which is associated with tunnel structure phase transformation. Systematic macrostructure observations and magnetic property measurements have been conducted on these nanostructures, which demonstrate that engineering layered structures has the potential to create many unique nanostructures and unusual physicochemical behaviours.

Abstract:Layered δ-MnO2 (birnessites) are ubiquitous in nature and have also been reported to work as promising water oxidation catalysts or rechargeable alkali-ion battery cathodes when fabricated under appropriate conditions. Although tremendous effort has been spent on resolving the structure of natural/synthetic layered δ-MnO2 in the last few decades, no conclusive result has been reached. In this Article, we report an environmentally friendly route to synthesizing homogeneous Cu-rich layered δ-MnO2 nanoflowers in large scale. The local and average structure of synthetic Cu-rich layered δ-MnO2 has been successfully resolved from combined Mn/Cu K-edge extended X-ray fine structure spectroscopy and X-ray and neutron total scattering analysis. It is found that appreciable amounts (∼8%) of Mn vacancies are present in the MnO2 layer and Cu2+ occupies the interlayer sites above/below the vacant Mn sites. Effective hydrogen bonding among the interlayer water molecules and adjacent layer O ions has also been observed for the first time. These hydrogen bonds are found to play the key role in maintaining the intermediate and long-range stacking coherence of MnO2 layers. Quantitative analysis of the turbostratic stacking disorder in this compound was achieved using a supercell approach coupled with anisotropic particle-size-effect modeling. The present method is expected to be generally applicable to the structural study of other technologically important nanomaterials.

Abstract:Flower-like LiMnPO4 nanostructures self-assembled with (010) nanosheets were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method by employing MnSO4 and Li2SO4 as raw materials and an EG-H2O mixture as the reaction medium solvent. The flower-like LiMnPO4 nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM. The primary LiMnPO4 nanosheets are about 30 nm in thickness and dominated by (010) facets. In order to understand the formation mechanism of the flower-like LiMnPO4 nanostructures, a series of time-dependent experiments were adopted. Based on the experimental results, a possible mechanism was proposed for the formation of LiMnPO4 nanosheets and the assembly of the flower-like nanostructures. Additionally, the electrochemical performance of the flower-like LiMnPO4 nanostructures as cathode materials in Li-ion batteries was also investigated by charge-discharge measurements.

Abstract:A versatile synthetic method has been developed for the fabrication of Mn3O4 nanocrystals with different sizes and shapes, such as square nanoplates, mesocrystal nanodisks, and nanopolyhedra. Manganese(II) acetate tetrahydrate and hydrazine monohydrate were the only two reactants used in aqueous solution, and no surfactant was employed. The key advantages of our approach are (1) the room-temperature synthesis, (2) the facile operation, (3) the flexibility in shape and size-control, and (4) the ease of scale-up. The exposed surfaces of the as-prepared nanoparticles were carefully characterized and indexed. The catalytic properties of the nanoplates for the degradation of methylene blue were evaluated in detail. The catalytic properties are closely related to the shape and size of the Mn3O4 nanocrystals, and nanoplates with a size of 50 nm exhibited the best catalytic performance. The magnetic properties were investigated with a superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer.

Abstract:Single-sided ZnO nanocombs have been synthesized by thermal evaporation of Zn powders at 440°C through a vapor–solid (VS) process. The stem ribbon of the as-synthesized nanocomb takes a growth direction of [Formula: see text], and its top/bottom surfaces are [Formula: see text]. The nanoteeth grow epitaxially out of the stem ribbon along [0001]. Such a low temperature process may be useful in future device fabrication.

Abstract:We report a facile process for the controllable synthesis of the Mn3O4 nanocrystals with different sizes and shapes, which includes dots, rods, and wires in the presence of the surfactants dodecanol and oleylamine. It is notable that the uniform-sized nanocrystals were achieved under mild experimental conditions and the common inorganic salt, such as manganese(II) nitrate, was adopted as the precursor. Furthermore, the as-prepared monodisperse nanocrystals, as ideal building blocks, can be rationally assembled into three-dimensional (3D) Mn3O4 colloidal spheres, using a facile ultrasonication strategy. In particular, the 3D colloidal spheres can be successfully converted to LiMn2O4 nanocrystals, which show distinct electrochemical performance, mainly depending on their crystallinity and size.

Abstract:We introduce a simple approach to synthesize high-quality Fe3O4 nanosheets at low temperature. By oxidizing pure Fe substrates in acidic solution on a hot plate maintained at 70 °C, we have grown the nanosheets in large-scale. The samples were characterized by SEM, XRD, TEM, micro-Raman, and VSM. Flowing O2 gas into the solution during oxidation enhances the growth rate of the nanosheets and thereby shortens the growth time from 24 h to 15 min. The magnetic property of the sample was also investigated. This technique can potentially be extended for large-scale synthesis of other metal-oxide nanosheets such as ZnO.

Abstract:MnO 2 nanostructure was synthesized via a redox reaction of potassium permanganate in hydrochloric acid solution below 100°C at open environment. The effects of pH value in solution and reaction temperature on the crystal structure and morphology of MnO 2 were investigated. It was revealed that layer folded δ-MnO 2 microspheres were obtained at low reaction temperature and low HCl concentration, whereas α-MnO 2 single-crystal nanorods were fabricated with increasing reaction temperature and HCl concentration. The possible formation mechanism of δ-MnO 2 microspheres and α-MnO 2 nanorods is suggested.
