Abstract:The current efficiency of NH3 electrosynthesis from N2 and H2O is ultralow as a result of poor selectivity in most catalysts. Here, we demonstrate that under ambient conditions, MXene (Ti3C2Tx) nanosheets attached to a vertically aligned metal host can achieve a high faradic efficiency (5.78%) at an ultralow potential for NH3 electrosynthesis. On the basis of experimental and theoretical evidence, the basal plane of MXene is relatively inert, and its higher activity is related to a greater number of exposed edge sites. This work elucidates that significantly improved selectivity of NH3 electrosynthesis can be achieved by tuning active sites and retarding hydrogen evolution activity. The proposed strategy provides a new opportunity to optimize the surface properties of 2D catalysts for efficient N2 fixation under ambient conditions.

Abstract:As the N equivalent to N bond in N-2 is one of the strongest bonds in chemistry, the fixation of N-2 to ammonia is a kinetically complex and energetically challenging reaction and, up to now, its synthesis is still heavily relying on energy and capital intensive Haber-Bosch process (150-350 atm, 350-550 degrees C), wherein the input of H-2 and energy are largely derived from fossil fuels and thus result in large amount of CO2 emission. In this paper, it is demonstrated that by using Au sub-nanoclusters (approximate to 0.5 nm) embedded on TiO2 (Au loading is 1.542 wt%), the electrocatalytic N-2 reduction reaction (NRR) is indeed possible at ambient condition. Unexpectedly, NRR with very high and stable production yield (NH3: 21.4 mu g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1), Faradaic efficiency: 8.11%) and good selectivity is achieved at -0.2 V versus RHE, which is much higher than that of the best results for N-2 fixation under ambient conditions, and even comparable to the yield and activation energy under high temperatures and/or pressures. As isolated precious metal active centers dispersed onto oxide supports provide a well-defined system, the special structure of atomic Au cluster would promote other important reactions besides NRR for water splitting, fuel cells, and other electrochemical devices.

Abstract:To date, the application of electrochemical nitrogen fixation into ammonia is severely hindered by the deficiency of high-performance electrocatalysts. In this paper, a facile approach is proposed for the preparation of MXene/Mn3O4 composite catalyst, where Mn3O4 nanoparticles are anchored tightly on the MXene nanosheets through van der Waals interactions. The obtained composite catalyst exhibiting powerful synergetic effect is able to provide abundant active sites for nitrogen reduction reaction. The introduction of MXene nanosheets dramatically improves the N2 adsorption and charge transfer. When operated in 0.1 M Na2SO4 aqueous media, MXene/Mn3O4 achieves a proper Faradaic efficiency of 5.51% and superior NH3 yield rate of 25.95 μg h−1 mgcat.−1 at −0.5 V under ambient conditions, outperforming either of individual components. Notably, this composite catalyst delivers superb stability, durability and selectivity as well.

Abstract:To achieve the energy-effective ammonia (NH3) production via the ambient-condition electrochemical N-2 reduction reaction (NRR), it is vital to ingeniously design an efficient electrocatalyst assembling the features of abundant surface deficiency, good dispersibility, high conductivity, and large surface specific area (SSA) via a simple way. Inspired by the fact that the MXene contains thermodynamically metastable marginal transition metal atoms, the oxygen-vacancy-rich TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) in situ grown on the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets (TiO2/Ti3C2Tx) are prepared via a one-step ethanolthermal treatment of the Ti3C2Tx MXene. The oxygen vacancies act as the main active sites for the NH3 synthesis. The highly conductive interior untreated Ti3C2Tx nanosheets could not only facilitate the electron transport but also avoid the self-aggregation of the TiO2 NPs. Meanwhile, the TiO2 NPs generation could enhance the SSA of the Ti3C2Tx in return. Accordingly, the as-prepared electrocatalyst exhibits an NH3 yield of 32.17 mu g h(-1) mg(-1) cat. at -0.55 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a remarkable Faradaic efficiency of 16.07% at -0.45 V versus RHE in 0.1 m HCl, placing it as one of the most promising NRR electrocatalysts. Moreover, the density functional theory calculations confirm the lowest NRR energy barrier (0.40 eV) of TiO2 (101)/Ti3C2Tx compared with Ti3C2Tx or TiO2 (101) alone.

Abstract:Ambient electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation is an emerging technology for green ammonia synthesis, but the absence of optimized, stable and performant catalysts can render its practical application challenging. Herein, bimetallic NiCo boride nanoparticles confined in MXene are shown to accomplish high-performance nitrogen reduction electrolysis. Taking advantage of the synergistic effect in specific compositions with unique electronic d and p orbits and typical architecture of rich nanosized particles embedded in the interconnected conductive network, the synthesized composite demonstrates extensive improvements in nitrogen molecule chemisorption, active area exposure and charge transport. As a result, optimal NH 3 yield rate of 38.7 μg h −1 mg cat. −1 and Faradaic efficiency of 6.92% are acquired in 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte. Moreover, the great catalytic performance can be almost entirely maintained in the cases of repeatedly-cycled and long-term electrolysis. Theoretical investigations reveal that the nitrogen reduction reaction on catalyst proceeds according to the distal pathway, with a distinctly-reduced energy barrier relative to the Co 2 B counterpart. This work may inspire a new route towards the rational catalyst design for the nitrogen reduction reaction.

Abstract:The synthesis of NH3 heavily depends on the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process with a large amount of greenhouse gas emission. Electrochemical reduction offers a carbon-neutral process to convert N-2 to NH3 at ambient conditions, but requires efficient and stable catalysts for the N-2 reduction reaction. Mo-dependent nitrogenases and synthetic molecular complexes have attracted increasing attention for N-2 fixation; however, less attention has been paid to Mo-based nanocatalysts for electrochemical N-2 conversion to NH3. Herein, we report that MoO3 nanosheets act as an efficient non-noble-metal catalyst for electrochemical N-2 fixation to NH3 with excellent selectivity at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. In 0.1 M HCl, this catalyst exhibits remarkable NRR activity with an NH3 yield of 4.80 x 10(-10) mol s(-1) cm(-2) (29.43 g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1)) and a faradaic efficiency of 1.9%. Moreover, this catalyst also shows high electrochemical stability and durability. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the outermost Mo atoms serve as the active sites for effective N-2 adsorption.
Synergistic Effect of Surface Terminated Oxygen Vacancy and Single Atom Catalysts on Defective MXenes for Efficient Nitrogen Fixation.

Abstract:The production of ammonia (NH3) from molecular dinitrogen (N-2) under ambient conditions is of great significance but remains as a great challenge. Using first-principles calculations, we have investigated the potential of using a transition metal (TM) atom embedded on defective MXene nanosheets (Ti3-xC2Oy and Ti2-xC2Oy with a Ti vacancy) as a single-atom electrocatalyst (SAC) for the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). The Ti3-xC2Oy nanosheet with Mo and W embedded, and the Ti2-xC2Oy, nanosheet with Cr, Mo, and W embedded, can significantly promote the NRR while suppressing the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction, with the low limiting potential of -0.11 V for W/Ti2-xC2Oy. The outstanding performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of the exposed Ti atom and the TM atom around an extra oxygen vacancy. The polarization charges of the active center are reasonably tuned by the embedded TM atoms, which can optimize the binding strength of key intermediate *N2H. The good feasibility of preparing such TM SACs on defective MXenes and the high NRR selectivity with regard to the competitive HER suggest new opportunities for driving NH3 production by MXene-based SAC electrocatalysts under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation is considered a promising approach to achieve NH3 production. However, due to the chemical inertness of nitrogen, it is necessary to develop efficient catalysts to facilitate the process of nitrogen reduction. Here, molybdenum carbide nanodots embedded in ultrathin carbon nanosheets (Mo2 C/C) are developed to serve as a catalyst candidate for highly efficient and robust N2 fixation through an electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). The as-synthesized Mo2 C/C nanosheets show excellent catalytic performance with a high NH3 yield rate (11.3 µg h-1 mg-1 Mo2C ) and Faradic efficiency (7.8%) for NRR under ambient conditions. More importantly, the isotopic experiments using 15 N2 as a nitrogen source confirm that the synthesized ammonia is derived from the direct supply of nitrogen. This result also demonstrates the possibility of high-efficiency nitrogen reduction even though accompanied with vigorous hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate (NO3RR) to synthesize ammonia (NH3) provides a competitive manner for carbon neutrality and decentralized NH3 synthesis. Atomically precise nanoclusters, as an advantageous platform for investigating the NO3RR mechanisms and actual active sites, remain largely underexplored due to the poor stability. Herein, we report a (NH4)9[Ag9(mba)9] nanoclusters (Ag9 NCs) loaded on Ti3C2 MXene (Ag9/MXene) for highly efficient NO3RR performance towards ambient NH3 synthesis with improved stability in neutral medium. The composite structure of MXene and Ag9 NCs enables a tandem catalysis process for nitrate reduction, significantly increasing the selectivity and FE of NH3. Besides, compared with individual Ag9 NCs, Ag9/MXene has better stability with the current density performed no decay after 108 hours of reaction. This work provides a strategy for improving the catalytic activity and stability of atomically precise metal NCs, expanding the mechanism research and application of metal NCs.

1 T-phase molybdenum sulfide nanodots enable efficient electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation under ambient conditions

Abstract:Herein, 1T-phase MoS2 nanodots (NDs) anchored to g-C3N4 (1T-MoS2/g-C3N4) are firstly developed to operate as a highly efficient catalyst for electrochemical N2 fixation with superior selectivity. 1T-MoS2/g-C3N4 composite presents outstanding NRR performance with a FE of 20.48% and a NH3 yield rate of 29.97 µg h−1 mg−1cat. at -0.3 V vs. RHE. Furthermore, 1T-MoS2/g-C3N4 composite also shows outstanding electrochemical stability and durability. 15N isotopic labeling experiment confirms that nitrogen in produced ammonia originates from N2 in electrolyte rather than the decomposition of g-C3N4. DFT calculations reveal the optimal reaction path of NRR with both associative distal and alternating pathways. This work may offer a hopeful lead for designing effective non-noble-metal NRR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The synthesis of ammonia (NH3) from nitrogen (N2) under ambient conditions is of great significance but hindered by the lack of highly efficient catalysts. By performing first-principles calculations, we have investigated the feasibility for employing a transition metal (TM) atom, supported on Ti3C2T2 MXene with O/OH terminations, as a single-atom catalyst (SAC) for electrochemical nitrogen reduction. The potential catalytic performance of TM single atoms is evaluated by their adsorption behavior on the MXene, together with their ability to bind N2 and to desorb NH3 molecules. Of importance, the OH terminations on Ti3C2T2 MXene can effectively enhance the N2 adsorption and decrease the NH3 adsorption for single atoms. Based on proposed criteria for promising SACs, our calculations further demonstrate that the Ni/Ti3C2O0.19(OH)1.81 exhibits reasonable thermodynamics and kinetics toward electrochemical nitrogen reduction.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
Boron‐Doped Ti3C2Tx MXene for Effective and Durable High‐Current‐Density Ammonia Synthesis

Abstract:In this work, boron‐doped Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets are explored as highly effective and durable NO3RR catalysts toward the NH3 electrosynthesis with industrial‐scale current density. Ammonia (NH3) synthesis via the nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) offers a competitive strategy for nitrogen cycling and carbon neutrality; however, this is hindered by the poor NO3RR performance under high current density. Herein, it is shown that boron‐doped Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets can highly efficiently catalyze the conversion of NO3RR‐to‐NH3 at ambient conditions, showing a maximal NH3 Faradic efficiency of 91% with a peak yield rate of 26.2 mgh−1 mgcat.−1, and robust durability over ten consecutive cycles, all of them are comparable to the best‐reported results and exceed those of pristine Ti3C2Tx MXene. More importantly, when tested in a flow cell, the designed catalyst delivers a current density of ‒1000 mA cm−2 at a low potential of ‒1.18 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode and maintains a high NH3 selectivity over a wide current density range. Besides, a Zn–nitrate battery with the catalyst as the cathode is assembled, which achieves a power density of 5.24 mW cm−2 and a yield rate of 1.15 mgh−1 mgcat.−1. Theoretical simulations further demonstrate that the boron dopants can optimize the adsorption and activation of NO3RR intermediates, and reduce the potential‐determining step barrier, thus leading to an enhanced NH3 selectivity.

Abstract:Two-dimensional MXene-based materials are potential of presenting unique catalytic performances of electrocatalytic reactions. The surface functionalization of MXene-based catalysts is attractive for developing efficient electrocatalysts toward nitrogen reduction reaction. Herein, we reported a Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene with a medium density of surface functionalized fluorine terminal groups, as an excellent N 2 reduction reaction electrocatalyst with enhanced adsorption and activation of N 2 . The Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene catalyst showed a production rate of ammonia as 2.81 × 10 –5 μmol·s −1 ·cm −2 , corresponding to a partial current density of 18.3 μA·cm −2 and a Faradic efficiency of 7.4% at − 0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode in aqueous solutions at ambient conditions, substantially exceeding similar Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene catalysts but with higher or lower densities of surface fluorine terminal groups. Our work suggests the capability of developing surface functionalization toolkit for enhancing electrochemical catalytic activities of two-dimensional MXene-based materials.
Mesoporous MnO2 nanosheets for efficient electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction via high spin polarization induced by oxygen vacancy

Abstract:The electrochemical N2 reduction reaction (NRR) represents a green and sustainable route for NH3 synthesis under ambient conditions. However, the mechanism of N2 activation in the electrocatalytic NRR remains unclear. Herein, we found that the high spin state Mn3+-Mn3+ pairs induced by oxygen vacancy in MnO2 nanosheets greatly enhance the catalytic activities. The strong electron transfer between d orbital of Mn and orbital of N2 forces the N2 to be of radical nature, which activates the hydrogenation process and weakens the N≡N bond. Based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculation results, we precisely designed mesoporous MnO2 nanosheets with rich oxygen vacancies via using methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide (MPB) to induce more Mn3+-Mn3+ pairs (Mn3-3-MnO2), which can achieve a fairly high ammonia yield of up to 147.2 µg·h−1·mgcat−1. at -0.75 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 11%. Furthermore, these mesoporous MnO2 nanosheets exhibit the superior durability with negligible changes in both NH3 yield and FE after a consecutive 6-recycle test and the current density electrolyzed over a 24-hour period. Our findings offer an approach to designing highly active transition metal catalysts for electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction.

Abstract:With the use of traditional Haber-Bosch N-2 fixation, a huge amount of CO2 emission bring a huge burden to the environment. Electrochemical N-2 reduction provides an environmental-friendly and sustainable alternative to NH3 synthesis at ambient conditions. Herein, we report our recent experimental finding that Ag composited with TiO2 can greatly improve the N-2 reduction reaction performance of TiO2 toward ambient conversion. In 0.1 M Na2SO4 (pH=7), such electrocatalyst achieves a large NH3 yield rate of 14.88 mu g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1) with a Faradaic efficiency of 6.2 % at -0.70 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode. Besides, it also demonstrates high electrochemical and structural stability for NH3 generation.

Here, we report the fabrication of a free-standing 3D hybrid electrode by in situ growth of N-doped carbon-coated γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles supported on carbon fabric (γ-Fe2O3-NC/CF), which manifests a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 12.28% and a considerable ammonia yield of 11.7 × 10–10 mo1 s–1 cm–2. Systematic characterization coupled with comprehensive electrochemical studies imply that the cation vacancies on the surface of γ-Fe2O3-NC/CF generated during the electrochemical activation process majorly contribute to the enhanced electrocatalytic activity for the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR).
Bimetallic Cu-Fe catalysts on MXene for Synergistically Electrocatalytic Conversion of Nitrate to Ammonia

Abstract:NO 3 − is a common water pollutant that can serve as a potential nitrogen source for electrocatalytic NH 3 production. However, an efficient and complete removal of low NO 3 − concentrations remains a challenge. Fe 1 Cu 2 @MXene bimetallic catalysts were constructed on two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene carriers via a simple solution-based synthetic method and used for the electrocatalytic reduction of NO 3 − . The combination of the rich functional groups, high electronic conductivity on the MXene surface, and the synergistic effect between the Cu and Fe sites enabled the composite to effectively catalyse NH 3 synthesis, with a 98% conversion of NO 3 − in 8 h and a selectivity for NH 3 of up to 99.6%. In addition, Fe 1 Cu 2 @MXene showed excellent environmental and cyclic stability at various pH values and temperatures over multiple (14) cycles. Semiconductor analysis techniques and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirmed that the synergistic effect provided by the dual active sites of the bimetallic catalyst enabled fast electron transport. This study provides new insights into the synergistic promotion of NO 3 − reduction reactions using bimetals.

Abstract:We demonstrate a one-step, low-cost and easily scalable pyrolysis route to fabricate a novel MnOX/Mn2N-N-C nanohybrid with MnOX/Mn2N nanoparticles (20-30 nm) anchored on the wrinkled N-doped carbon nanosheets (denoted as N-C). MnO*/Mn2N-N-C displays a remarkably higher ORR activity than that of N-C, suggesting that the MnO,/Mn2N nanoparticles play an important role in enhancing the ORR activity. Furthermore, MnOx/ Mn2N-N-C exhibits overwhelmingly better durability than commercial 20 wt% Pt/C, to be specific, 93.7% current retention after continuous operation for 24,000 s, while 59.7% for 20 wt% Pt/C.
