Abstract:All-solid-state batteries (ASSB) with lithium anode have attracted ever-increasing attention towards developing safer batteries with high energy densities. While great advancement has been achieved in developing solid electrolytes (SE) with superb ionic conductivity rivalling that of the current liquid technology, it has yet been very difficult in their successful application to ASSBs with sustaining rate and cyclic performances. Here in this work, we have realized a stable ASSB using the Li6.25PS5.25Cl0.75 fast ion-conducting electrolyte together with LiNbO3 coated LiCoO2 as cathode and lithium foil as the anode. The effective diffusion coefficient of Li-ions in the battery is higher than 10−12 cm2 s−1, and the significantly enhanced electrochemical matching at the cathode-electrolyte interface was essential to enable long-term stability against high oxidation potential, with the LCO@LNO/Li6.25PS5.25Cl0.75/Li battery to retain 74.12% capacity after 430 cycles at 100 μA cm−2 and 59.7% of capacity after 800 cycles at 50 μA cm−2, at a high charging cut-off voltage of 4.2 V. This demonstrates that the Li6.25PS5.25Cl0.75 can be an excellent electrolyte for the realization of stable ASSBs with high-voltage cathodes and metallic lithium as anode, once the electrochemical compatibility between cathode and electrolyte can be addressed with a suitable buffer coating.

Abstract:Highly Li-ion conductive Li6PS5Cl solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) were prepared by solid-state sintering method. The influence of sintering temperature and duration on the phase, ionic conductivity, and activation energy of Li6PS5Cl was systematically investigated. The Li6PS5Cl electrolyte with a high ionic conductivity of 3.15 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) at room temperature (RT) was obtained by sintering at 550 degrees C for just 10 min, which was more efficient taking into account such a short preparation time in comparison with other reported methods to synthesize Li6PS5Cl SSEs. All-solid-state lithium sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) based on the Li6PS5Cl SSE were assembled by using the nano-sulfur/multiwall carbon nanotube composite combined with Li6PS5Cl as the cathode and Li-In alloy as the anode. The cell delivered a high discharge capacity of 1850 mAh g(-1) at RT for the first full cycle at 0.176 mA cm(-2) (similar to 0.1C). The discharge capacity was 1393 mAh g(-1) after 50 cycles. In addition, the Coulombic galvanostatic cycling. The experimental data showed that Li6PS5Cl was a good candidate for efficiency remained nearly 100% during the SSE used in ASSLSBs.
Improving electrochemical stability by modifying the Li6PS5Cl entailed with the mixed phase of Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 composite solid electrolytes for all-solid-state lithium battery applications

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLB) are recognized as one of the next-generation energy storage technologies that can compete with or even surpass the state-of-the-art liquid-based lithium-ion batteries. In this work, Li6PS5Cl (LPSCL) is prepared by a ball-mill vacuum seal sintering process and the phase structure, chemical, morphological and electrochemical properties are characterized. The LPSCL shows an ionic conductivity of 1.06 × 10−3 S/cm at room temperature. However, the Li stripping/plating of Li/LPSCL/Li showed short circuits after 18 cycles, resulting in poor stability versus Li. To improve the conductivity and stability of Li, the LPSCL is modified with Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 using a simple mixing procedure. The influence of the different mass ratios of LPSCL and Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 as composite solid electrolytes (CSE) on the electrochemical performance is investigated. The optimized Li/CSE9010/Li cell exposed higher conductivity and Li stability. It can be attributed to this work that the production of mixed oxide with sulfide CSE improves the stability of the electrochemical interface and the atmospheric compatibility.

Abstract:Solid-state batteries exhibit promising prospects due to their potential in terms of safety and energy density. Sulfide solid electrolytes have received much attention due to their high ionic conductivity (about 10−2 S cm−1). However, high side reactions between solid sulfide electrolytes and oxide cathodes, such as LiCoO2, have hampered the development of all-solid-state sulfide batteries. Here, first-principles calculations and experiments are combined to demonstrate a novel protective layer to cope with the Li6PS5Cl electrolyte and LiCoO2 cathode interface problem. By uniformly coating LiCoO2 with a layer of Li2WO4, the interfacial resistance (the 100th cycle) between the sulfide electrolyte and LiCoO2 is reduced to about 68 Ω cm2, which is nearly 15 times lower than the premodified 1061 Ω cm2. The 2 wt% Li2WO4-coated LiCoO2(2%LWO-LCO)/Li6PS5Cl/Li-In all-solid-state battery exhibits satisfactory capacity and excellent cycling stability at room temperature (93% capacity retention after 100 cycles). Furthermore, the ab initio molecular dynamics based on the Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof density functional theory calculations show that Li2WO4 can effectively prevent the diffusion of Co and O from LiCoO2 into the Li6PS5Cl solid electrolyte. It is shown that molecular dynamics help predict the interfacial reactions in all-solid-state sulfide batteries.

Abstract:Exploration of advanced solid electrolytes with good interfacial stability toward electrodes is a highly relevant research topic for all-solid-state batteries. Here, we report PCL/SN blends integrating with PAN-skeleton as solid polymer electrolyte prepared by a facile method. This polymer electrolyte with hierarchical architectures exhibits high ionic conductivity, large electrochemical windows, high degree flexibility, good flame-retardance ability, and thermal stability (workable at 80 °C). Additionally, it demonstrates superior compatibility and electrochemical stability toward metallic Li as well as LiFePO4 cathode. The electrolyte/electrode interfaces are very stable even subjected to 4.5 V at charging state for long time. The LiFePO4/Li all-solid-state cells based on this electrolyte deliver high capacity, outstanding cycling stability, and superior rate capability better than those based on liquid electrolyte. This solid polymer electrolyte is eligible for next generation high energy density all-solid-state batteries.

Abstract:Sulfide solid electrolytes possess high ionic conductivity and moderate dendrite suppression capability, but rather poor compatibility against oxide cathodes and metallic Li. Here, we report O-doped Li6PS5Br as solid electrolyte synthesized by a facile solid-state sintering. Different from other O-incorporated sulfides, the O atoms in Li6PS5-x O x Br prefer to substitute the S atoms at free S2− sites rather than those at the PS4 tetrahedra. Remarkably, without deteriorating the ionic conductivity, this inorganic solid electrolyte with O doping exhibits comprehensively enhanced properties including excellent dendrite suppression capability, superior electrochemical and chemical stability against Li metal as well as high voltage oxide cathodes, and good air stability. Li(Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1)O2 and LiCoO2-based all-solid-state batteries with Li6PS4.7O0.3Br electrolyte deliver high specific capacity, superior rate capability, and outstanding cycling stability accompanied with low interfacial resistivity. This type of inorganic solid electrolytes is promising for all-solid-state batteries with high energy density.

Abstract:Li6PS5Cl is a highly wanted sulfide-solid-electrolyte (SSE) for developing all-solid-state lithium batteries, due to its high ionic conductivity, good processability and abundant compositional elements. However, its cyclability is poor because of harmful side reactions at the Li6PS5Cl/Li interface and growth of lithium dendrites inside Li6PS5Cl phase. Herein, we report a simple interface-engineering remedy to boost the electrochemical performance of Li6PS5Cl, by coating its surface with a Li-compatible electrolyte Li3OCl having low electronic conductivity. The obtained Li6PS5Cl@Li3OCl core@shell structure exhibits a synergistic effect. Consequently, compared with the bare Li6PS5Cl, this composite electrolyte exhibits great performance improvements: 1) In Li|electrolyte|Li symmetric cells, the critical current density at 30°C gets increased from 0.6 mA/cm2 to 1.6 mA/cm2, and the lifetime gets prolonged from 320 h to 1400 h at the cycling current of 0.2 mA/cm2 or from 6 h to 900 h at the cycling current of 0.5 mA/cm2; 2) In Li|electrolyte|NCM721 full cells running at 30°C, the cycling capacity at 0.2 C (or 0.5 C) gets enhanced by 20% (or from unfeasible to be feasible) for 100 cycles and the rate capability reaches up to 2 C from 0.2 C; and in full cells running at 60°C, the cycling capacity is increased by 7% at 0.2 C and the rate capability is enhanced to 3.0 C from 0.5 C. The experimental studies and theoretical computations show that the performance enhancements are due to the confined electron penetration and suppressed lithium dendrites growth at the Li6PS5Cl@Li3OCl interface.

Abstract:Sb-based lithium sulfide electrolytes are promising for all-solid-state lithium battery applications due to their ultrahigh Li-ion conductivity (10−2 S/cm) which is even comparable to current liquid electrolytes. However, the poor electrochemical stability between this electrolyte and high voltage layered structure cathode makes it difficult to achieve excellent battery performances. Herein, Li6.5Sb0.5Ge0.5S5I electrolyte with ionic conductivity up to 10 m S/cm is successfully synthesized and the electrochemical failure mechanism of the corresponding battery using bare LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 cathode and Li-In anode is revealed. Furthermore, Li3InCl6 electrolyte is introduced both as an ionic additive in the cathode mixture and as an isolating layer to avoid side reactions. The designed configuration delivers a high discharge capacity of 162.7 mAh/g at 0.5C and sustains 74.5% of the capacity after 200 cycles at room temperature. Moreover, it also can reversibly cycle from -20 to 60 °C with superior battery performances. This work provides a general design strategy for utilizing highly conductive sulfide electrolytes with low stability in all-solid-state batteries.

Abstract:Even though ultra-fast Li + ion conductors based on sulfides such as LGPS and Li 6 PS 5 Cl have been developed in recent years, rather limited advancement has been made towards developing all-solid-state lithium ion batteries due to serious interface-related problems. Here in this work, we have carried out extensive fundamental modelling to formulate a system of materials based on hali-chalcogenide Li 6 PA 5 Cl argyrodites (A is the site for chalcogen species), so that materials with chemically and structurally compatible characteristics can be used as both a superb electrolyte and excellent buffer coatings over electrode surfaces. All solid-state-batteries (ASSBs) in the form of Li|Li 6 PO 4 SCl|Li 6 PO 5 Cl|Li 0.25 MnO 2 are thus recommended, so that buffer coatings based on O-rich hali-chalcogenides help avoid interfacial reactions, owing to their high stability with respect to the cathodes and greatly enhanced chemical potential with respect to Li/Li + . Such batteries fundamentally have high mechanical and electrochemical stability, thus enabling high performance and great endurance to operational voltage.

Abstract:To realize high-energy all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLB), it is essential to address the interfacial reaction issue between sulfide solid electrolytes (SSEs) and the lithium anode. While SSEs are known for their high ion conductivity, this reaction hinders their application in ASSLBs. To overcome this challenge, a composite solid electrolyte (CSE) is developed. The CSE consists of sulfide-based SSE Li5.5PS4.5Cl1.5 (LPSCl) and a styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SBS) aiming to create a stable electrolyte-anode interface. The LPSCl-2%SBS CSE not only improves the mechanical properties and high ionic conductivity but also enhances the stability of the electrolyte-anode interface against lithium metal. Experimental results show that symmetric Li/Li cells with LPSCl-2%SBS exhibit stable Li plating/stripping for 1200 h at 1.0 mA cm(-2) with a lower overpotential. Notably, the excellent interface stability of the LPSCl-2%SBS CSEs/Li metal enables high performance in Li(Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1)O-2/LPSCl-2%SBS/Li batteries, demonstrating a high initial discharge capacity (123.2 mA h g(-1) at 0.1C), cycling performance (72.9% capacity retention at the 100th cycle at 0.1C and 42.7% capacity retention at the 500th cycle at 0.5C), and rate capability (62.1 mA h g(-1) at 0.5C). These findings underscore the importance of the chemical compatibility between sulfide electrolytes and lithium metal, offering a promising approach to the design of high-energy ASSLBs.
A Low-Cost Liquid-Phase Method of Synthesizing High-Performance Li6PS5Cl Solid-Electrolyte

Abstract:Li6PS5Cl is an extensively studied sulfide-solid-electrolyte for developing all-solid-state lithium batteries. However, its practical application is hindered by the high cost of its raw material lithium sulfide (Li2S), the difficulty in its massive production, and its substandard performance. Herein we report an economically viable and scalable method, denoted as "de novo liquid phase method", which enables in synthesizing high-performance Li6PS5Cl without using commercial Li2S but instead in situ making Li2S from cheap materials of lithium chloride (LiCl) and sodium sulfide. LiCl, a raw material needed for making both Li2S and Li6PS5Cl, can be added at a full-scale in the beginning and unrequired to separate when making the intermediate Li3PS4. Such a consecutive feature makes this method time-efficient; and the excess amount of LiCl in the step of making Li2S also facilitates removing the byproduct of sodium chloride via the common ion effect. The materials cost of this method for Li6PS5Cl is ∼ $55/kg, comparable with the practical need of $50/kg. Moreover, the obtained Li6PS5Cl shows high ionic conductivity and outstanding cyclability in full battery tests, that is, ∼2 mS/cm and >99.8% retention for 400+ cycles at 1 C, respectively. Thus, this innovative method is expected to pave the way to develop practical sulfide-solid-electrolytes for all-solid-state lithium batteries.
Poly(ethylene Oxide) Reinforced Li6PS5Cl Composite Solid Electrolyte for All-Solid-state Lithium Battery: Enhanced Electrochemical Performance, Mechanical Property and Interfacial Stability

Abstract:Argyrodite Li6PS5Cl is a promising solid electrolyte in all-solid-state lithium batteries owing to its high ionic conductivity. However, the poor mechanical property and undesirable interfacial property restrict its application. In order to solve these issues, we fabricate Li6PS5Cl/poly(ethylene oxide) composite solid electrolytes with enhanced mechanical property and stable lithium/electrolyte interface. By adding 5 to 20 wt% poly(ethylene oxide), the proportional limit of composite solid electrolytes is enhanced by similar to 150%, reaching a value up to 60 MPa. With 5 wt% poly(ethylene oxide), the as-assembled sandwich-type LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2/composite solid electrolytes/Li battery exhibits enhanced cycling performance with a capacity retention rate of 91% over 200 cycles at 0.05C and 30 degrees C. Ex Situ characterizations reveal that by adding suitable poly(ethylene oxide) content in Li6PS5Cl, the interfacial reactions and lithium dendrite growth can be effectively inhibited, resulting in much improved cycling performance of all-solid-state lithium batteries.

Achieving superior ionic conductivity of Li6PS5I via introducing LiCl

Abstract:Li6PS5I electrolyte shows significant potential as solid electrolytes due to its low cost and high stability. However, the poor room temperature Li-ion conductivity (10−6 S/cm) limits its applications in solid-state batteries. This work aims to increase the conductivity of Li6PS5I by introducing LiCl in the structure using high-rotation mechanical milling. Structure analysis confirms that a minor dopant of Cl− can form a single-phase of Li6PS5ClxI1-x argyrodite electrolytes, while a large doping amount yields a mixture of the Li6PS5I and Li6PS5Cl phases. The modified electrolytes with “composition” Li6PS5Cl0.7I0.3 show the highest room temperature Li-ion conductivity among the milled and sintered sample, 7.37 × 10−4 and 2.33 × 10−3 S/cm, both of which are much higher than the conductivity of pristine Li6PS5I. Solid-state batteries using the above solid electrolytes combined with LiNbO3-coated LiNi0.7Mn0.2Co0.1O2 cathode and LiIn anode display excellent electrochemical performances. The battery using annealed Li6PS5Cl0.7I0.3 electrolyte delivers improved discharge capacities and extended cycling performances at different operating temperatures. This work provides an effective strategy to design high conductivity Li6PS5I-based solid electrolytes for solid-state batteries.

Abstract:The low Li-ion conductivity and poor interfacial compatibility towards cathode/anode materials of Li6PS5I solid electrolytes have significantly impeded their applications in all-solid-state batteries. This work developed a facial design strategy to improve the ionic conductivity and lithium metal compatibility of Li6PS5I electrolyte by the Sn-Cl dual doping. The optimal Li6.6P0.8Sn0.2S5I0.6Cl0.4 electrolyte shows ultrahigh conductivity up to 0.96 mS/cm and enhanced lithium metal compatibility. The assembled battery using LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 cathode and Li-In anode delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 175.7 mAh/g at 0.1C and maintains 79.2% after 100 cycles. Moreover, the corresponding battery using lithium metal anode displays a higher initial capacity (137.7 mAh/g vs. 112.7 mAh/g) and superior cyclability. The superior battery performances are attributed to the smaller interfacial resistances of those solid electrolyte-involved interfaces due to the Sn-Cl dual doping. This work demonstrates that the dual doping strategy is an effective route to exploring highly conductive Li6PS5I electrolytes.

Abstract:Li3PS4 shows great potential as a solid electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium batteries due to its high Li-ion conductivity and excellent mechanical properties. All-solid-state lithium batteries using the synthesized Li3PS4 electrolytes combined with Li3InCl6 electrolytes with good electrochemical/chemical stability, which acts both as the Li-ion additive in the cathode mixture and as an isolation layer to isolate the direct contact between the sulfide electrolytes and bare LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 active materials, deliver a superior electrochemical performance. Abstract:The electrochemical performance of all-solid-state Li metal batteries (ASSLMBs) can be improved by resolving the challenges triggered by the uncontrolled growth of Li dendrites throughout the solid electrolytes (SEs). Herein, a well-defined composite of micro-Li 6 PS 5 Cl (LPSC) and nano-Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) is designed as a LPSC–LATP interlayer sandwiched between LPSC electrolytes for ASSLMBs. This fabrication exhibits electron-blocking functionalities, which reduce the probability of reaction with Li + ions for the formation of anode-initiated and grain boundary (GB)-initiated dendrites. More importantly, it also creates localized eliminated micro-environments of Li dendrites through the high transient reactivity between them, and the remaining cracks can be dynamically and effectively filled by decomposition products, thereby clearly suppressing Li dendrite nucleation, propagation and penetration as well as simultaneously contributing to the enhancement of battery performance and stability. With this approach, a fine-tuned LPSC–LATP (8S–2O) interlayer enables symmetrical Li/LPSC/8S–2O/LPSC/Li cells to achieve an ultra-high critical current density (CCD) of over 5 mA cm −2 at room temperature, and ultra-long-term cycling at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for over 1600 h. Additionally, ASSLMBs employing commercial LiCoO 2 cathodes can deliver exceptional durability, with an extremely high 85.6% retention of initial discharge capacity and coulombic efficiency (CE) of >99.6% after 1200 cycles at 1C (1.28 mA cm −2 ). These experimental batteries demonstrate the application potential of this configuration of SEs for the commercialization of ASSLMBs.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) are increasingly regarded as one of next-generation energy storage technologies that offer good abuse tolerance, wide operating temperature range, and a simplified battery system for automotive application. In order to pursuit the cost-effectiveness and battery thermal stability, LiFePO4 (LFP) as cathode active material for ASSLBs has recently attracted widespread attention in both industry and academia. However, the poor interfacial compatibility of electrode/electrolytes serious hampers the development of LFP-based ASSLBs. Here, an advanced Li2ZrCl6 (LZC) - Li9.54Si1.74P1.4S11.7Cl0.3 (LiSiPSCl) bilayer electrolyte is rationally designed for LFP-based ASSLBs, aiming to simultaneously achieve favorable interfacial compatibilities with both LFP cathode layer and alloy anode layer. As a result, the developed LFP-LZC/LZC/LiSiPSCl/Li-In ASSLB can not only deliver a high initial discharge capacity of 144.9 mAh g-1, but also manifest a high-capacity retention up to 89% after 400 cycles at the current density of 1 C. The strategy used in this work sheds light on a promising method to engineer stabilized interfaces for LFP-based ASSLBs.
