Abstract:The deposition kinetics of ZnO nanoparticles on silica surfaces and surfaces that pre-coated with Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA) were examined over a wide range of environmentally relevant ionic strengths in both monovalent and divalent solutions by employing a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). Deposition efficiencies of ZnO nanoparticles on bare silica surfaces increased with increasing ionic strength in both NaCl and CaCl(2) solutions, which agreed with the trends of interaction forces between nanoparticle and silica surface and thus was consistent with classic Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. The presence of divalent cation Ca(2+) in solutions greatly enhanced the deposition kinetics of ZnO nanoparticles on silica surfaces. Pre-coated SRHA on silica surfaces hindered the deposition of ZnO nanoparticles in both monovalent and divalent solutions, which was not consistent with classic DLVO theory. Steric repulsion, a non-DLVO interaction, was found to be a major mechanism controlling the deposition of ZnO nanoparticle on SRHA-coated silica surfaces.

Influence of Surface Charge on the Functional Properties of Silica Nanoparticles and Cellular Toxicity

Abstract:The effect of silica nanoparticles with a different surface charge on the cell viability of Caco-2 and RAW 264.7 cell lines was studied. Silica nanoparticles with narrow size distribution were prepared by Stobers method. These silica nanoparticles surface charge was varied from highly positive to highly negative, were single functionalized by APTES and multi functionalized by cysteine for amine and carboxyl groups. All other properties of the nanoparticles were kept constant. The unfunctionalized nanoparticles were used as control. Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the presence of amine and carboxyl groups present on the surface of silica nanoparticles. The zeta potential measurements confirmed the successful modification of surface charge of silica nanoparticles in water. SEM images showed that the negatively charged, positively charged, and unfunctionalized nanoparticles with similar size and shape. MTT assay results indicated that the toxicity of SiO2 was cell type-dependent. CaCo-2 cells were highly resistant to nanoparticle treatment whereas RAW 264.7 (macrophages) predominantly charge dependent. The difference in toxicity could be attributed to the difference in the physiological function of each cell line. Among the three kinds of nanoparticles (negative, positive, and untreated), positively charged nanoparticles showed higher toxicity, which might be due to the attractive interaction between the negatively charged cell membrane and positively charged SiO2 nanoparticles.

Abstract:This paper aimed to investigate the influences of operational parameters and aqueous chemical conditions on transport behaviors of cerium oxides nanoparticles (CeO 2 -NPs) in saturated silica media. Results indicated that increasing rates of attachment efficiency (α) were related with cationic types and critical deposition concentration (CDC) for divalent cation (Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ) were more than 31-fold of that for monovalent cation (Na + and K + ). Increase or reduction of electrolyte pH could both promote the mobility of CeO 2 -NPs in glass beads, while influence was more evident at alkaline conditions. α increased linearly with NPs concentrations, while decreased linearly with flow velocity in the column and effects were related with electrolyte contents. Presence of surfactants could sharply decreased α and SDS was more effective to facilitate CeO 2 -NPs transport than Triton X–100. With DOMs concentrations increasing, α firstly kept constant, then sharply declined and finally reduced very slowly. The influence of DOMs on NPs deposition was in order of SA > HA > TA > BSA. Overall, this study revealed that aqueous chemical conditions was crucial to NPs transport in porous media and would provide significant information for our understanding on the fate and transport of nanoparticles in natural environment.

Abstract:The adsorption of cationic-anionic surfactant mixtures (dodecylpyridinum chloride/sodium octylsulfonate and octyltriethylammonium bromide/sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate) on silica gel/water and silica gel/mineralized water interfaces was investigated. The effects of anionic (cationic) surfactants on the adsorption of cationic (anionic) surfactants were discussed. It was shown that the existence of anionic surfactant did not affect the adsorption of cationic surfactants on negatively charged solid surface, but the anionic surfactant, which had low amount adsorbed on negatively charged solid surface, was no longer adsorbed with the existence of cationic surfactant. The amount adsorbed of the cationic surfactant was much lower in mineralized water solution than in water solution. The results were explained based on the adsorption mechanism of silica gel.
Transport and Deposition of Zno Nanoparticles in Saturated Porous Media

Abstract:The impact of ionic strength and cation valence on the transport and deposition kinetics of ZnO nanoparticles in saturated porous media was systematically investigated in this research. Packed column experiments were performed over a series of environmentally relevant ionic strength in both NaCl (ranging from 1 to 20mM) and CaCl2 (ranging from 0.1 to 1mM) solutions. Solution chemistries (ionic strength and ion types) greatly affected the transport of ZnO nanoparticles in saturated quartz sand. Flat breakthrough plateaus were observed at relatively low ionic strength in both NaCl (1 and 5mM) and CaCl2 (0.1–0.5mM) solutions, whereas, ripening was observed at high ionic strength (10 and 20mM in NaCl, and 1mM CaCl2) conditions. Deposition of nanoparticle increased with increasing solution ionic strength in both monovalent and divalent salt solutions. The presence of divalent ions in solutions increased nanoparticle deposition in quartz sand. Under all examined conditions, nanoparticles mainly retained at segments near the column inlet. The retained ZnO nanoparticle concentrations versus transport distance decreased faster than the theory prediction of log-linear decrease under all examined conditions. Our study found that concurrent aggregation of ZnO nanoparticles occurred during the transport process, which contributed to the hyper-exponential retained profiles.
Impact of natural organic matter and divalent cations on the stability of aqueous nanoparticles

Abstract:The stability of nanoparticles in aquatic environment plays an important role in determining their environmental implication and potential risk to human health. This research studied the impact of natural organic matter (NOM) and divalent cations (Ca(2+)) on the stability of engineered metal oxide nanoparticles (e.g. ZnO, NiO, TiO(2), Fe(2)O(3) and SiO(2)). When nanoparticles were present in neutral water, a relatively weak electrolyte concentration (0.01 M KCl) could result in their aggregation; however, with the addition of 1 mg/L NOM, the negative surface charge of nanoparticles increased significantly and therefore their propensity to aggregate is reduced. 4 mg/L NOM stabilized most nanoparticles by producing -30 mV or higher zeta potentials. On the other hand, the negative charge that NOM imparted to nanoparticles could be neutralized by divalent cations (calcium ions). 0.04 M-0.06 M Ca(2+) induced the aggregation of NOM-coated nanoparticles. It should be noted that among all the studied nanoparticles, SiO(2) exhibited the unique stability due to its low NOM adsorption capacity and small Hamaker constant. SiO(2) remained stable no matter whether the solution contained NOM or Ca(2+).
Transformation of CuO Nanoparticles in the Aquatic Environment: Influence of Ph, Electrolytes and Natural Organic Matter

Abstract:Many studies have shown the effect of solution chemistry on the environmental behavior of metal-based nanoparticles (NPs), except CuO NPs. Here, we investigated the agglomeration, sedimentation, dissolution, and speciation of CuO NPs by varying pH, ionic strength, ionic valence, and natural organic matter (NOM). The results showed that as the pH moved away from 6, the size of CuO agglomerates decreased, along with the enhanced NP suspension stabilization, due to the increase of electrostatic repulsive force. Increasing ionic strength and valence intensified the agglomeration and sedimentation of CuO NPs because of the compression of electrical double layers. The presence of humic acid and citric acid enhanced the dispersion and stabilization of CuO NP suspension, but l-cysteine showed a different impact. Decreasing pH, increasing ionic strength and all NOM improved the dissolution of CuO NPs, but the divalent electrolyte (CaCl2) inhibited the Cu2+ release from CuO NPs compared to the monovalent electrolyte (NaCl). In addition, X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis demonstrated that the presence of l-cysteine transformed more than 30% of CuO NPs to Cu(I)-cysteine by coordinating with thiol group. This study can give us an in-depth understanding on the environmental behavior and fate of CuO NPs in the aquatic environment.
Deposition Kinetics of Colloidal Manganese Dioxide Onto Representative Surfaces in Aquatic Environments: the Role of Humic Acid and Biomacromolecules.

Abstract:The initial deposition kinetics of colloidal MnO2 on three representative surfaces in aquatic systems (i.e., silica, magnetite, and alumina) in NaNO3 solution were investigated in the presence of model constituents, including humic acid (HA), a polysaccharide (alginate), and a protein (bovine serum albumin (BSA), using laboratory quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring equipment (QCM-D). The results indicated that the deposition behaviors of MnO2 colloids on three surfaces were in good agreement with classical Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. Critical deposition concentrations (CDC) were determined to be 15.5 mM NaNO3 and 9.0 mM NaNO3 when colloidal MnO2 was deposited onto silica and magnetite, respectively. Both HA and alginate could largely retard the deposition of MnO2 colloids onto three selected surfaces due to steric repulsion, and HA was more effective in decreasing the deposition rate relative to alginate. However, the presence of BSA can provide more attractive deposition site and thus lead to greater deposition behavior of MnO2 colloids onto surfaces. The dissipative properties of the deposited layer were also influenced by surface type, electrolyte concentration, and organic matter characteristics. Overall, these results provide insights into the deposition behavior of MnO2 colloids on environmental surfaces and have significant implications for predicting the transport potential of common MnO2 colloids in natural environments and engineered systems.
The effect of multivalent anions on removal of Titanium dioxide nanoparticles from drinking water sources by coagulation-sedimentation processes: Efficacy and mechanisms

Abstract:Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are emerging potential hazard contaminants. There is a pressing need to understand TiO2 NPs removal from anions-spiked complex waters by coagulation-sedimentation (C/S) pro-cesses. In this study, we investigate impacts of Cl-, NO3 -, SO42-, and PO43-on TiO2 NPs removal at circumneutral pHs by C/S processes. Little removal of TiO2 NPs was observed in the absence and presence of Cl- or NO3-. However, 93% and 82% of 10 mg/L TiO2 NPs were removed within 45 min as dosing 0.6 mM PO43-and 0.8 mM SO42-, respectively, at 10 mg/L polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and pHini. 6.2 in C/S processes, with pseudo-first -order rate constants of 0.098 & PLUSMN; 0.002 and 0.072 & PLUSMN; 0.001 min -1, respectively. Reaction rates in this work were several orders of magnitude faster than those in previous studies. Removal efficiencies of TiO2 NPs reached higher than 89% with a spike of multivalent anions in tap water, thereby exhibiting high practical implication potential. Additionally, the temporal evolution of total particle number and fractal dimension demonstrated that the presence of SO42-and PO43-improved the formation of denser spherical flocs and consequently precipitation rates mainly due to charge neutralization. Moreover, appropriate coagulants, optimized levels of PAC, SO42-and PO43-, and acidic pHs favored nanoparticle removal. Together, this work suggests that the presence of back-ground water composition could facilitate nanoparticle removal in a C/S process.
The Effect of Water Chemistry on Homoaggregations of Various Nanoparticles: Specific Role of Cl⁻ Ions.

Abstract:Colloidal behavior of various nanoparticles (NPs) could be quite different under the influence of complicated water chemistry. Homoaggregations of four types of nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated with a focus on the effects of electrolyte ions, pH, and natural organic matter (NOM). Results show that critical coagulation concentrations (CCCs) of NaCl and CaCl2 for anatase TiO2, rutile TiO2, or CeO2 NPs were all inversely proportional to the valence of cations, following the Schulze-Hardy Rule, and homoaggregations of the three NPs were similarly inhibited by the presence of NOM within pH 3-9. Although the homoaggregation of Ag NPs was also increased as the concentration or valence of cations increased, the relationship between CCC and valence of the cations was far away from the Schulze-Hardy Rule; moreover, NOM only slightly increased CCC of CaCl2 and surprisingly decreased CCC of NaCl for Ag NPs. Excessively-adsorbed Cl(-) on the formed Ag-AgCl colloidal nucleus was detected, which could increase the electronegativity of Ag NPs and thus limit the aggregation effect of chlorides and the dispersion effect of NOM as well. These results are expected to increase our knowledge on the colloidal behavior and fate of NPs in aquatic environments.

Abstract:The surface charge density and surface potential of oxide surfaces are to a large extent regulated by the co- and counterion distributions in the electrical double layer. Here we study the effect of different anions (Cl–, Br–, I–, HCOO–, and NO3–) in sodium electrolytes and different cations (Li+, Na+, K+, and Cs+) in chloride electrolytes on the surface charge density and relative surface potential of colloidal nanometer sized silica (SiO2) as a function of electrolyte concentration and bulk pH using potentiometric titrations, attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) from a liquid microjet. Abstract:The effect of different dispersants and water leaching on aqueous dispersibility of zirconia powder was studied. Zeta potentials of aqueous solutions containing nano-sized zirconia powder and different dispersants, such as ammonium polyacrylic acid (PAA-NH4) and tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH) and water leaching were characterized. Better dispersion of nano-sized zirconia powder in aqueous solutions was achieved with the addition of dispersant and water leaching.

Abstract:The widespread utilization of plastic products ineluctably leads to the ubiquity of nanoplastics (NPs), causing potential risks for aquatic environments. Interactions of NPs with mineral surfaces may affect NPs transport, fate and ecotoxicity. This study aims to investigate systematically the deposition and aggregation behaviors of carboxylated polystyrene nanoplastics (COOH-PSNPs) by four types of clay minerals (illite, kaolinite, Na-montmorillonite, and Ca-montmorillonite) under various solution chemistry conditions (pH, temperature, ionic strength and type). Results demonstrate that the deposition process was dominated by electrostatic interactions. Divalent cations (i.e., Ca2+, Mg2+, Cd2+, or Pb2+) were more efficient for screening surface negative charges and compressing the electrical double layer (EDL). Hence, there were significant increases in deposition rates of COOH-PSNPs with clay minerals in suspension containing divalent cations, whereas only slight increases in deposition rates of COOH-PSNPs were observed in monovalent cations (Na+, K+). Negligible deposition occurred in the presence of anions (F-, Cl-, NO3-, CO32-, SO42-, or PO43-). Divalent Ca2+ could incrementally facilitate the deposition of COOH-PSNPs through Ca2+-assisted bridging with increasing CaCl2 concentrations (0-100 mM). The weakened deposition of COOH-PSNPs with increasing pH (2.0-10.0) was primarily attributed to the reduce in positive charge density at the edges of clay minerals. In suspensions containing 2 mM CaCl2, increased Na+ ionic strength (0-100 mM) and temperature (15-55 ◦C) also favored the deposition of COOH-PSNPs. The ability of COOH-PSNPs deposited by four types of clay minerals followed the sequence of kaolinite > Na-montmorillonite > Ca-montmorillonite > illite, which was related to their structural and surface charge properties. This study revealed the deposition behaviors and mechanisms between NPs and clay minerals under environmentally representative conditions, which provided novel insights into the transport and fate of NPs in natural aquatic environments.
Modeling the effects of surfactant, hardness, and natural organic matter on deposition and mobility of silver nanoparticles in saturated porous media

Abstract:This study aims to provide insights into the mechanisms governing the deposition and retention of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in saturated porous media. Column experiments were conducted with quartz sand under saturated conditions to investigate the deposition kinetics of AgNPs, their mobility at different groundwater hardnesses (10-400 mg/L as CaCO3), and humic acid (HA, 0-50 mg/L as dissolved organic carbon [DOC]). An anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), was used as a dispersing agent to prepare a SDS-AgNPs suspension. The deposition kinetics of AgNPs were highly sensitive to the surfactant concentration, ionic strength, and cation type in solution. The breakthrough curves (BTCs) of SDS-AgNPs suggested that the transport and retention were influenced by groundwater hardness and HA. At low water hardness and high HA, high mobility of SDS-AgNPs was observed in saturated conditions. However, the retention of SDS-AgNPs increased substantially in very hard water with a low concentration of HA, because of a decreased primary energy barrier and the straining effect during the course of transport experiments. A modified clean-bed filtration theory and a two-site kinetic attachment model showed good fits with the BTCs of SDS-AgNPs. The fitted model parameters (katt and kstr) could be used successfully to describe that the retention behaviors were dominated by electrostatic and electrosteric repulsion, based on extended Derjaguin-Landau-Vaerwey-Overbeek calculations.
Ionic-strength-dependent effect of suspended sediment on the aggregation, dissolution and settling of silver nanoparticles

Abstract:<p>Suspended sediment (SS) is ubiquitous in natural waters and plays a key role in the fate of engineered nanomaterials. In this study, the effect of SS on the aggregation, settling, and dissolution of polyvinylpyrrolidone-coated silver nanoparticles (PVP-AgNPs) was investigated under environmentally relevant conditions. The heteroaggregation of AgNPs with SS was not observed at low ionic strength (≤0.01 M) due to high electrostatic repulsion and steric forces. At higher NaCl concentrations (0.1 and 0.3 M), PVP-AgNPs were found to attach onto the SS surface, and the formation of AgNP-SS heteroaggregates strongly promoted settling of PVP-AgNPs due to the overwhelming gravity force. PVP-AgNP dissolution was reduced after the addition of sediment to ultrapure water because the presence of sediment-associated dissolved organic matter (SS-DOM). The formation of an AgCl layer on PVP-AgNP surface in 0.01 M NaCl solution resulted in the minor effect of SS on AgNP dissolution. After addition of SS, the dissolved silver concentrations of PVP-AgNP increased in 0.1 and 0.3 M NaCl solution. The interactions of SS-DOM with AgNPs under different NaCl concentrations interfered the dissolution of AgNPs in sediment-laden water. This study provides new insight into the fate of AgNPs in sediment-laden water under various environmental conditions.</p>

Abstract:Investigations on factors that affect the fate and transport of nanoparticles (NPs) remain incomplete to date. In the present study, we conducted column experiments using 8 and 52 nm silica NPs to examine the effects of NPs' concentration and size on their retention and transport in saturated porous media. Results showed that higher particle number concentration led to lower relative retention and greater surface coverage. Smaller NPs resulted in higher relative retention and lower surface coverage. Meanwhile, evaluation of size effect based on mass concentration (mg/L) vs particle number concentration (particles/mL) led to different conclusions. A set of equations for surface coverage calculation was developed and applied to explain the different results related to the size effects when a given mass concentration (mg/L) and a given particle number concentration were used. In addition, we found that the retained 8 nm NPs were released upon lowered solution ionic strength, contrary to the prediction by the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. The study herein highlights the importance of NPs' concentration and size on their behavior in porous media. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first report of an improved equation for surface coverage calculation using column breakthrough data.

Cation adsorption/desorption is often proposed to occur in concert with proton-transfer on hydroxyl-covered mineral surfaces, but so far this cooperative effect has been inferred indirectly. This work applies Density Functional Theory (DFT)-based molecular dynamics simulations of explicit liquid water/mineral interfaces to calculate metal ion desorption free energies. Monodentate adsorption of Na(+), Mg(2+), and Cu(2+) on partially deprotonated silica surfaces are considered. Na(+) is predicted to be unbound, while Cu(2+) exhibits larger binding free energies to surface SiO(-) groups than Mg(2+). The predicted trends agree with competitive adsorption measurements on fumed silica surfaces. As desorption proceeds, Cu(2+) dissociates one of the H2O molecules in its first solvation shell, turning into Cu(2+)O(-)(H2O)(3), while Mg remains Mg(2+)(H2O)(6). The protonation state of the SiO(-) group at the initial binding site does not vary monotonically with cation desorption.

Abstract:Hypothesis The adsorption of heavy metal ions such as Pb(II) onto negatively charged minerals such as silica is expected to alter the structure and the interactions at the silica/aqueous interfaces. Besides the solution pH, the inner-sphere sorption of Pb(II) is expected to regulate the surface charge/potential, hypothesized to control the actions of monovalent anions in the aqueous environment. These complex pictures can be probed directly using surface-sensitive sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. Experiments The pH-dependent water structure within the double layer at silica/aqueous interfaces under the influence of different ions was examined using SFG. The recorded SFG spectra were deconvoluted into the Stern layer (SL) and diffuse layer (DL) using the maximum entropy method in conjunction with the electrical double-layer theory. Findings Standalone monovalent sodium salts do not exhibit ion-specific effects on the silica/aqueous interfaces. However, the mixture of Pb(II) species and each of these salts display profound ion-specific effects on the structure of silica/aqueous interfaces, indicating the role of Pb(II) as an enabler of the ion-specificity of the investigated monovalent anions. The interesting effect arises from a complex interplay between the physical processes (i.e., electrostatic interactions, screening effects, etc.) and chemical processes such as the hydrolysis of Pb(II) ions, ion complexation, protonation and deprotonation of the surface silanol group.

Effects of Humic Acid and Solution Chemistry on the Retention and Transport of Cerium Dioxide Nanoparticles in Saturated Porous Media

Abstract:When released into natural aquatic systems, cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles (NPs) may have toxic effects to the ecosystems and public health; it is thus important to understand their environmental fate and transport. This work studied the effects of humic acid (HA) concentrations (0–10 mg L−1) and solution chemistry (ionic strength (IS) and pH) on the retention and transport of CeO2 NPs in water-saturated porous media under environmental relevant conditions. HA and IS showed remarkable effect on the retention and transport of CeO2 NPs in the porous media. Even at low concentrations (i.e., 5 and 10 mg L−1), HA stabilized CeO2 NPs in the suspensions by introducing both negative surface charge and steric repulsion and thus enhanced their mobility in the porous media. When solution HA concentration increased or ionic strength decreased, mobility of CeO2 NPs in the porous media enhanced dramatically. Solution pH, however, had little influence on the mobility of the CeO2 NPs under the tested experimental conditions, and increasing solution pH only slightly increased the transport of the NPs. Mathematical models were applied to describe the experimental data. Predictions from the extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (XDLVO) theory and advection–dispersion–reaction (ADR) model matched the experimental data well.

Abstract:Specific ion effects on the aggregation behavior of a reference aquatic natural organic matter (NOM), Suwannee River NOM (SRNOM), were investigated using kinetic, titration, calorimetric, and surface tension methods. Monovalent cations induced structural compacting of SRNOM, but not its aggregation. Their ability to induce structural compacting follows the order: Cs+ > Rb+ > K+ > Na+ > Li+. Divalent cations except Mg2+ can readily induce SRNOM aggregation. Their critical coagulation concentrations (CCC) follow the order: CCCSr > CCCCa > CCCBa. Electrokinetic, titration, and calorimetric data suggest that monovalent cations have weak interactions with SRNOM, while divalent cations strongly interact with SRNOM. Overall, the cation specificity in aggregation is determined by cation-NOM interactions and their ability to modulate surface tension. Specific ion effects of monovalent cations correlate to their hydration free energy, while that of divalent cations correlate to the ratio of the hydration entropy of cation to the enthalpy change of cation-NOM interactions. The cation specificity is consistent with the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory, and the intermolecular interaction energy is dominated by the Lewis acid-base interactions. Our results suggest that specific cations should be targeted to predict or manipulate intermolecular interactions of aquatic NOM in natural and engineered settings.
