Abstract:Metal-to-metal seals are widely used in tubing and casing connections in oil and gas wells; therefore, the integrity of sealing is crucial. As the quality of seals is directly influenced by the metal-to-metal contact stress, this study investigates the measurement and evaluation of contact stress at rough interfaces numerically and experimentally using an ultrasonic quantitative method. A two-dimensional ultrasonic propagation model of the rough contact interface is developed based on an actual rough profile. The reflection coefficient decreases gradually as the normal deformation and contact rate increase, and a relationship between the reflection coefficient and the contact rate is established. The reflection coefficient reduces exponentially to approximately zero when the contact rate is less than 0.5. Combined with the contact mechanics theory, for an elastic contact, an empirical fitting formula for the interface reflection coefficient, contact stress, root mean square deviation (Rq), and mean width of the profile elements (RSm) is established. Note that at the same contact rate, the reflection coefficient decreases as the interface lubricant parameter ρc 2 increases. Therefore, ρc 2 is introduced to optimize the empirical fitting formula. Accuracy of the empirical fitting formula is verified using experimental results, that is, through the ultrasonic measurement of the contact stress at the loaded metal-to-metal interface. Thus, this study serves as a reference for measuring and quantifying the metal-to-metal contact stress.

Abstract:The article mainly introduces the non-destructive measuring technologies of mechanics, leakage, damage and contact deformation for aviation rubber seals and their applications. The measuring technologies contain pressure dif-ference method for leakage measurement; ultrasonic testing technology for contact stress; infrared thermal imaging technol-ogy for damage and leakage detection; digital image correlation method for measuring contact deformation. Meanwhile, the non-contact measurement technologies of aviation rubber seals in the future are prospected.

Abstract:As a basic mechanical component, the sealing ring is widely used in industrial, aerospatial, and other fields. In this study, an elastic metal C-shaped sealing ring with a wave structure was taken as an example, and its performance was analyzed theoretically and measured experimentally. First, an experimental study was performed on the C-ring seal. The proposed method for experimental measurement of the contact stress of the C-ring seal involved innovative use of a universal electronic testing machine and pressure sensitive paper, in conjunction with the hue–saturation–brightness (HSB) method. Based on the discoloration of the pressure sensitive paper after contact stress, computer software was used for analysis, the discoloration was digitized, and the contact stress was established. Second, a theoretical calculation model of the C-ring seal was established using ANSYS software, and a finite element theoretical calculation of the mechanical properties of the sealing ring was established. Finally, the contact stress results were compared with the model calculation results of the C-ring seal. The error between the two was small (4.8%), which proved the validity of the calculation model and the scientificity of the experimental method.

Abstract:Silicone rubber seals are widely used in the aerospace field due to the excellent chemical and mechanical properties. The contact properties of the silicone rubber have a great influence on the static sealing performance. In this paper, the macro-micro contact properties of silicone rubber are investigated by the experimental and finite element method. Firstly, a sinusoidal profile is used to describe the microscopic topography of the silicone rubber, and a simplified contact model is used to analyze the influence of the rubber roughness on static sealing properties based on the Hertz theory. Then, a new tester of macro contact properties of rubber seals is developed for measuring the contact area and contact force in real time. Finally, a micro contact model is developed by a finite element method for analyzing the influence of surface roughness parameters Ra and Rsm. Results show that the effect of Rsm on sealing properties cannot be ignored when the surface roughness is large. When the Ra increases, the contact pressure increases; when the Rsm increases, the contact pressure decreases. With the decreasement of Ra, the contact area increases, which is opposite to the variation of Rsm. The finite element analysis results are in good agreement with the test and theoretical conclusions, which provides reference for the seal design.

Abstract:In this paper, the effects of stress relaxation on the sealing performance of the fabric rubber seal are studied under pressure difference and compressive displacement. First, the prediction method about the gas leakage rate of the fabric rubber seal is presented based on the viscoelastic theory and the microchannel model. Second, both the average contact stress and the contact length of the fabric rubber seal are obtained under the pressure difference by means of the finite element method (FEM), and the gas leakage rate of the microchannel model for the fabric rubber seal is calculated using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. Finally, the influences of stress relaxation on the gas leakage rate of the fabric rubber seal are analyzed under different pressure difference and compressive displacement, which indicates that the numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:A measurement method of the gas leakage is introduced to characterize the gas flow along the contact interface between the woven fabric rubber seals and the metal. The measurement principle of the gas leakage along the contact interface is proposed and the measurement equipment is developed. The corresponding system errors of the measurement device are analyzed. The gas leakage along the contact interface is measured, which indicates that the leakage performance along the contact interface between the rubber seals and the metal is similar to the permeability in porous media based on Darcy-Forchheimer equation. Abstract:Both theoretical and experimental methods were used to study the contact characteristics between silicone rubber and smooth surface,focusing on revealing the variation of contact pressure and contact area during the compression process.The mathematical expressions of contact pressure and contact area were obtained based on Hertz theory,and then the compression test of silicone rubber was carried out using the rubber mechanical properties testing platform.The results showed that the contact area and contact pressure increased with the increase of compression.Under the same compression,the elastic modulus of silicone rubber had little effect on the contact area,while contact pressure and elastic modulus were positively correlated.The theoretical results were in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:The measurement of real contact area between rough surfaces is one of most challenge problems in contact mechanics and is of importance to understand some physical mechanisms in tribology. Based on the frustrated total internal reflection, a new apparatus is designed to measure the real contact area. For brass samples with various surface topographies, the relation between normal load and real contact area is measured. Our experiments verify the linear relationship between load and real contact area during loading process. More importantly, the unloading process is firstly considered to distinguish the contribution of elasticity and plasticity in contact of rough surfaces. It is found that both elasticity and plasticity are involved throughout the continuous loading process, different from some present understanding and assumptions that they play at different loading stages. A quantitative parameter is proposed to indicate the contribution of plasticity. The present work not only provides an experimental method to measure real contact area but figure out how elastic and plastic deformation works in contact of rough surfaces.

Abstract:In this paper, both the mechanical behavior and the leakage characteristics of fabric rubber composite in aircraft door are investigated in detail based on microchannel model, which consider the influences of the microchannel shape, the elastic modulus, and the contact stress on the gas leakage rate of the fabric rubber composite. First, the explicit expression of the gas leakage rate at the contact interface of the fabric rubber composite is established based on the contact interface properties. Second, the explicit dimensionless function of the gas leakage rate at the contact interface of the rubber seal is proposed by means of dimensional analysis, finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. Finally, the influences of the gas pressure on the gas leakage rate are studied under the same pressure difference at both sides of the fabric rubber composite. The predicted results of the gas leakage rate are in good agreement with the experimental results, which provide an effective model for evaluating the gas leakage characteristics at the contact interface of the fabric rubber composite under any gas pressure and compressive displacement.

Abstract:The relative motion between two mated parts of machinery always generates heat from friction. The lubricant serves as a medium not only to reduce the friction but also to enhance heat dissipation. In order to contain the lubrication oil, lip seal is a most frequent sealing part used in these applications. This paper aims to study the contact width and contact pressure of the seal lip under the various interference fits between the shaft and seal. The contact force associated with the pressure was used to estimate the generated heat due to friction. Thereby, this frictional heat flux was employed to analyze the temperature distribution within the rubber seal. According to the temperature distribution, the thermal deformation of the seal and the concern of material ageing can be examined. Since the use of a seal with a shaft under allowable dimension tolerance is foreseeable, the fit with different degree of interference was investigated. On the other hand, a simple apparatus to measure the width and pressure on the contact lip zone under different diameters of shaft was designed and fabricated. The contact width and contact pressure were distilled from the press mark of a pressure-sensitive film. The measurements were used to demonstrate the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed set up.

Abstract:The contact behavior of a stepseal affects its reliability and remaining life. In this study, experimental and numerical analyses were performed to investigate the contact behavior of a typical stepseal. Its dimensions and material properties were also tested. The Mooney–Rivlin hyperelastic model was used to fit the stress–strain data of the rubber. A static contact pressure of 105.1 MPa was obtained using the Fujifilm pressure measurement film. A finite element model of a stepseal with reasonable element sizes was established. A comparison between the experimental results and finite element (FE) predictions shows that the finite element method underpredicts the maximum static contact pressure and contact length. For the maximum contact pressure, the test results were approximately 30.4% higher than those of the FE predictions.

Abstract:This paper presents a method, for the first time, for real-time measurement of seismic isolation rubber bearing with MEMS pressure sensors embedded in it. Finite element simulations are conducted to study the proposed method. And experiments of the manufactured rubber bearing with MEMS pressure sensors embedded in it are operated in a testing machine. The experimental results show that the outputs of pressure sensors have a great linear relation with vertical load. And the horizontal displacement can be obtained by measuring the variation of compressive stress of rubber layer. This method can be used for analyzing the force state of earthquake-proof buildings, assessing the quality of rubber bearings in their service life and structural health monitoring.
In situ evaluation of contact stiffness in a slip interface with different roughness conditions using ultrasound reflectometry

Abstract:Understanding the dynamic condition of the interface between a railway wheel and rail is important to reduce the risks and consider the effectiveness of countermeasures for tribological problems. Traditionally the difficulty in obtaining accurate non-destructive interfacial measurements has hindered systematic experimental investigations. Recently, an ultrasound reflectometry technique has been developed as a direct observation method of a rolling-sliding interface; however, the topography dependence under the high contact pressures in a wheel-rail contact has not been clarified. For this reason, a novel in situ measurement of the contact stiffness using ultrasound reflectometry was carried out for three different levels of roughness. A contact pressure equivalent to that in a wheel-rail interface was achieved by using a high-pressure torsion test approach. The dynamic change of contact stiffness with slip was measured using ultrasound and the influence of roughness was investigated. The measured changes were validated using a newly developed numerical simulation, and mechanisms to explain the observed behaviour were proposed in terms of fracture and plastic deformation of the asperity bonds. These findings could help in understanding the traction characteristics for different roughness conditions and also assist in understanding damage mechanisms better, such as wear and rolling contact fatigue.

Abstract:A dual-frequency ultrasonic technique is proposed for the quantitative evaluation of contact stiffness between pressed solid surfaces. Analytical solutions are obtained using a perturbation method, predicting the generation of difference-frequency and sum-frequency components, together with second harmonics of two primary waves. Experiments are performed for three types of interfaces, i.e., the interfaces of two aluminum alloy blocks with and without couplant and two glass blocks without couplant. The linear and nonlinear interfacial stiffness are measured quantitatively with the aid of a laser interferometer. The results of simulations are used to compare with experimental results. Nonlinearity parameters are defined to describe the nonlinearity generation efficiencies, while their pressure dependences are examined both theoretically and experimentally. Results show that couplant between interfaces affects the contact stiffness evaluations in an enhanced manner. The contacts between the transducer–sample interfaces are found to be the main source of errors.
Application of Ultrasound Technique to Evaluate Contact Condition on the Faying Surface of Riveted Joints

Abstract:Contact area and pressure distributions on the faying surfaces of riveted joints are critical to fretting fatigue crack. However, these contact conditions are hard to evaluate by experimental methods. This study proposed an application of ultrasound technique to quantify contact area and pressure distribution on the faying surface of riveted joints. This ultrasound method consists of the ultrasonic reflection map measurement of the faying surface, and a parallel calibration procedure to establish the relationship between ultrasonic reflection and contact pressure. In this way, the contact area and pressure distributions of riveted joints installed with different riveting forces were investigated. The results show that the contact pressure increases rapidly with the squeeze force, while the contact area spreads slightly at the same time. The mean pressure profiles of the ultrasonic results were compared with the results of a finite element model for the riveted joints. The comparison shows that the mean pressure profiles are consistent with the numerical results.
Evaluation of contact stiffness between solid-solid interfaces using dual-frequency ultrasound

Abstract:Acoustical methods are playing an important role for nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of adhesive-bonded composites and components in industrial applications. A dual-frequency ultrasonic technique is proposed for the quantitative evaluation of contact strength between pressed solid surfaces. An ultrasonic excitation consists of two primary frequency components is applied perpendicular to the interface, and the transmitted wave is examined. Theoretical study is based on a perturbation analysis of contact acoustic nonlinearity (CAN) model, predicting the generation of difference and sum frequency waves, together with the second harmonics. Nonlinear parameters are defined to describe the nonlinearity generation efficiencies. Experiments are performed for three types of interfaces, i. e. the interfaces of two aluminum alloy blocks with and without couplant and two glass blocks. The difference frequency wave component has bigger generation efficiency than other nonlinear components, which offers an advantage of high SNR and good detection capability of contact stiffness (interfacial stiffness). For each interface, the first and second-order interfacial stiffness are measured with contact pressure increasing from near zero to about 0.8 MPa with the aid of a laser interferometer. Finally, numerical simulations are also carried out, and a consistency is found between measurements and calculations. The dual-frequency ultrasound sent to the interface generates at least four second-order nonlinear components, which enriches the CAN technique for interface quality examinations. Both measured and simulated results indicate an increase of interfacial stiffness and decrease of nonlinear parameters with growing contact pressure. Moreover, measured results show that couplant between interfaces influences the contact stiffness evaluations in an enhanced manner, while the contact pressure determined by measured interfacial stiffness values are underestimated due to the couplant. The main problem comes from the contact between the transducersample interfaces, which brings extra nonlinearity to the detected signals and affect the accuracy of measuring. Image Method for Measuring Normal Interfacial Stiffness

Abstract:This paper proposes a new method for measuring normal interfacial stiffness. The contact interface is traditionally equivalent to some springs, but this general equivalent method is proved not sufficiently accurate in processing the elastic-plastic rough contact. The improved interfacial equivalent method is presented to remove the inaccuracy by introducing a contact layer, which considers the plastic zone beneath the rough surface. On the basis of the new method, the image method is proposed for measuring the improved interfacial stiffness. This method is fulfilled by using an image registration method and a sub-pixel algorithm to obtain the deformation of the contact layer and the smooth layer. Simultaneously, the ultrasonic measurement is carried out to measure the ultrasonic interfacial stiffness. The comparative results reveal that the measurement data of the improved interfacial stiffness show better agreement with the numerical results.

Abstract:In this paper, the theoretical analysis and the inversion of the contact stress on the finite thickness rubber contact surface with the friction effect are investigated. First, an explicit expression of deformation and stress on the surface of rubber under a rigid spherical indenter is developed by means of theoretical model, dimensional analysis, and nonlinear finite element simulation. Second, the inverse approach for obtaining the contact stress on the finite thickness rubber contact surface is presented and verified theoretically. Also, the displacement, the stress field, and the friction coefficient are obtained by means of three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D DIC) method. Finally, the applicability to other hyperelastic models, general boundary conditions, and loading modes are discussed. The results will provide an important theoretical and experimental basis for evaluating the contact stress on the finite thickness rubber layer.

Abstract:In this paper, the mechanical behaviors of the tubular rubber seal under the curved surface loading are studied by the experimental and finite element methods. First, both the compressive behaviors and the frictional performance of the tubular rubber seal under the plane loading are studied experimentally. Second, two-dimensional finite element model about the tubular rubber seal is established and the constitutive model parameters of the rubber seal material are extracted. Finally, the mechanical behavior of the tubular rubber seal under the curved surface loading is investigated by means of the approximation analysis method and the finite element simulation. The results indicate that the physical parameters based on the experiment and finite element method simulation of the tubular rubber seal under the plane loading can describe the mechanical behavior under the curved surface loading. Both the strain distribution of the tubular rubber seal and the driving torque are slightly influenced by the friction coefficient between the tubular rubber seal and the curved surfaces. The influence factor of the friction coefficient on the driving torque is proposed, which plays an important role in the design and evaluation of advanced tubular rubber seal.
