Abstract:In this study, the mechanism of ammonium bisulfate (ABS) formation and decomposition over V/WTi for the NH3-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) at various temperatures was deeply investigated. Bridged bidentate, chelating bidentate, and tridentate sulfates bound to TiO2 were formed as dominant intermediates at 200, 250, and 300 °C, respectively. These sulfates reacted with affinitive ammonium species to form ammonium (bi)sulfate species and also covered the active sites and embedded the VOSO4 intermediates, which resulted in an inferior intrinsic NH3-SCR conversion rate at 200 °C and 250 °C. At 300 °C, trace amounts of ABS on TiO2 presented no influence on the NH3-SCR performance. The electrons deviating towards sulfates through the bond between ABS and metal oxides (WO3 and TiO2) weakened the stability of ABS and lowered its decomposition temperature, whereas the vanadia species played the opposite role due to the sulfur species existing in an electron saturation state with the formation of the VOSO4 intermediate. The presence of NO + O2 could break the bonds inside ABS and it could react with the ammonium species originating from ABS, which pulls NH3 out of the ABS formation equilibrium and accelerates its decomposition and competitively inhibits its formation. Correspondingly, the faster NH3-SCR conversion rate and higher N2 selectivity improve the ABS poisoning resistance of the V/WTi catalyst at low temperatures.

Abstract:Although V2O5/WO3/TiO2 catalyst has been commercially used for selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3–SCR), it suffers from activity loss due to ammonium bisulfate (ABS) poisoning at low temperatures below ABS dew point (≤280 °C). Here, we demonstrate that V2O5/MoO3/TiO2 catalyst with H2 pretreatment (designated V2O5/MoO3/TiO2_H2) exhibits high activity and excellently stable NH3–SCR performance at 180–230 °C under SO2 and H2O poisoning conditions. Nevertheless, commercial V2O5/WO3/TiO2 catalyst is quickly deactivated under identical conditions after reaction for 25 h due to formation of liquid–like ABS. Electronic structure investigations show that H2 pretreatment decreases oxidation states of V species of the V2O5/MoO3/TiO2_H2 catalyst, and reduced V species suppress the SO2–to–SO3 oxidation rate. The suppression of SO2–to–SO3 oxidation rate contributes to lower formation rate of ABS on catalyst surface. MoO3/TiO2 with ABS decomposition ability different from those of conventional or bulk material was synthesized on the basis of our previous efforts, and used as a fundamental building block in V2O5/MoO3/TiO2_H2. Control experiments show that the MoO3/TiO2 building block in V2O5/MoO3/TiO2_H2 has excellent ability to decompose ABS. Difficulty of ABS formation and rapid decomposition rate of ABS offer a net result in terms of improved ABS resistance and high activity for V2O5/MoO3/TiO2_H2 catalyst.

Abstract:Vanadium-based catalysts have been extensively used to catalyze various reactions, for example, their long-term application in the de-NOx process. Various vanadium species dispersed on carriers with a large surface area act as catalytic active sites. However, the role of crystal V2O5 in the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3 remains unclear. In this study, a series of bulk vanadium oxide catalysts were synthesized by varying the synthesis temperature, among which the catalyst with a large amount of crystalline V2O5 synthesized at low temperatures exhibited excellent NH3-selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) activity at low temperatures. It was found for the first time that V4+ species in this catalyst play an important role in low-temperature NH3-SCR, which significantly improved the catalytic performance at low temperatures. The difference in the NH3 activation of V2O5 with different ratios of V4+/V5+ was investigated by NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infra-red (IR-DRIFT) tests. The difference in O2 activation was studied by O2-TPD and 18O2 isotope exchange experiments. The results show that a higher proportion of V4+ is more conducive to NH3 and O2 activation. This discovery provides a basic understanding of chemical reactions catalyzed by metal oxides and is of great significance for the development and commercial application of NH3-SCR catalysts.

Sn-doped Rutile TiO2 for Vanadyl Catalysts: Improvements on Activity and Stability in SCR Reaction

Abstract:Sn-doped ruffle TiO2 supports (SnxTi1-xO2, X = 0.1, 0.2, 0.5) were designed and V2O5/SnxTi1-xO2 catalysts were synthesized by incipient wetness impregnation. The V2O5/Sn0.2Ti0.8O2 exhibited higher low-temperature SCR activity and better H2O and SO2 resistance than the traditional V2O5/TiO2 (anatase) catalyst. In situ DRIFTs, XPS, H-2-TPR and NH3/NO + O-2-TPD results showed that Sn doping improved the redox property, NH3/NO adsorption and the amount of surface chemisorbed oxygen. The kinetic study indicated that Sn doping had little effect on SCR reaction pathways, but promoted SCR reaction, mainly through Eley-Rideal mechanism. More importantly, the V2O5/Sn0.2Ti0.8O2 showed better thermal stability than V2O5/TiO2. For V2O5/TiO2, the aggregation and sintering of the catalyst occurred, and the surface area decreased significantly after thermal aging. The monomeric vanadyl species partially transferred to crystalline V2O5. But for V2O5/Sn0.2Ti0.8O2, the surface area did not decrease as much as that for V2O5/TiO2, and the monomeric vanadyl species partially transferred to the polymeric vanadyl species.

Abstract:V2O5/WO3 TiO2 (VWT) catalysts for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx removal were prepared by a mechanical grinding method using different vanadium precursors. The SCR performances were evaluated in simulated flue gas and explained through characterizations by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman sp ectroscopy, Hy temperature -programmed reduction, and in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform spectroscopy. VO(acac)(2)-VWT catalyst prepared using a vanadyl acetylacetonate (VO(acac)(2)) precursor exhibited the highest catalytic activity and excellent resistance to SO2 and H2O poisoning in 200-400 degrees C compared to the catalysts obtained using other precursors. The VO(acac)(2) precursor could enrich V on the surface remarkably and promote the formation and dispersion of polymeric vanadia species. Furthermore, a relatively high percentage of low-valent vanadium atoms were found on the VO(acac), VVVT surface, facilitating electron transfer between V4+ and V5+. Surfaceadsorbed.NH3 species on VO(acac)(2) VWT were much more reactive. The initial geometry of vanadium precursors determined the tendency of V to accumulate and further influenced the dispersion and final form of V species.
The Effects of Tungsten and Hydrothermal Aging in Promoting NH3-SCR Activity on V2O5/WO3-TiO2 Catalysts

Abstract:The fresh catalysts of V2O5-TiO2 (VTi) and V2O5/WO3-TiO2 (VWTi) were prepared via an impregnation method. The hydrothermal aged samples were obtained at 750 degrees C for 24 h under airflow with 10 vol% water vapor. Compared to the fresh catalysts, the catalytic performance of the aged catalysts (VTi-A and VWTi-A) has been significantly improved. Particularly, VWTi-A displayed the best activity over a wide temperature range (NOx conversion: > 90% @ 250-550 degrees C). Structural characterizations indicated that the surface area of the aged catalysts was dramatically decreased, and the morphologies of catalysts also changed. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR), and Raman results demonstrated that hydrothermal aging greatly influenced the migration and agglomeration of vanadium species. As a result, numerous active polymeric VOx species were emerged on the surface of catalysts. More importantly, XPS results revealed that more low valence vanadium species (V4+ and V3+) was produced on the VWTi-A catalysts than that of VTi-A after hydrothermal aging. These low valence vanadium species resulted in considerably higher SCR activity than the high valence vanadium species (V5+). Consequently, both polymeric surface VOx species and low valence vanadium species determined the enhanced low-temperature SCR behavior of the aged catalysts.

Abstract:V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalysts with different vanadium and tungsten loadings were prepared by impregnation method. The activities of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 were measured and surface characteristics of those samples were characterized. It is found that both the surface areas and catalytic activities are influenced by vanadium loadings. When the vanadium loadings increased from 1% to 8%, the catalyst surface areas decreased by 16 m2/g, while the highest activity temperature was reduced by about 100 degrees C. Tungsten acts as stabilizer and promoter of the SCR catalyst. When the vanadium loading was 1%, an increase of tungsten loadings from 0 to 6% resulted in the decrease of the catalyst surface areas by only 3 m2/g, while the activity window was expanded to both high and low temperature range each by about 50 degrees C. Vanadium and tungsten loadings have an effect on the surface VOx, but do not change the surface crystal structure of the catalysts.

Abstract:Vanadia-based catalysts have been widely used for catalyzing various reactions, including their long-standing application in the deNOx process. It has been commonly considered that various vanadium species dispersed on supports with a large surface area act as the catalytically active sites. However, the role of crystalline V2O5 in selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR) remains unclear. In this study, a catalyst with low vanadia loading was synthesized, in which crystalline V2O5 was deposited on a TiO2 support that had been pretreated at a high temperature. Surprisingly, the catalyst, which had a large amount of crystalline V2O5, showed excellent low-temperature NH3-SCR activity. For the first time, crystalline V2O5 on low-vanadium-loading catalysts was found to be transformed to polymeric vanadyl species by the adsorption of NH3. The generated active polymeric vanadyl species played a crucial role in NH3-SCR, leading to remarkably enhanced catalytic performance at low temperatures. Abstract:Vanadium-based catalysts have been widely used in the simultaneous removal of NOx and Hg0. However, how vanadium species affect the reactivity of Hg0 oxidation and coverage-dependent behaviors of vanadium species are still unknown. Herein, we synthesized a series of V2O5/TiO2 catalysts with different V loadings and investigated the reaction characteristics of vanadium species (i.e., sub-monolayer, monolayer, and crystalline) for the catalytically simultaneous abatement of NOx and Hg0. At low V loading, the ratio of Oads/Olatt decreased gradually due to the VOx species occupying the defect sites of TiO2. The reaction rate of Hg0 oxidation is proportional to the square of the VOx density up to monolayer coverage. A maximum amount of V5+ is achieved at monolayer coverage and the TOF shows a volcanic trend with the increase of V loading. This study is an in-depth attempt to explore the effects of different vanadium species on the simultaneous removal of NOx and Hg0, and it is expected to provide theoretical guidance for the effective design of state-of-the-art vanadium-based catalysts for multipollutant control.

Study on the Decomposition of Trace Benzene over V2O5–WO3/TiO2-based Catalysts in Simulated Flue Gas

Abstract:Catalytic decomposition of benzene was studied by using oxides of vanadium and tungsten supported on titanium oxide (TiO2) catalysts for effective reduction of emissions of toxic organic compounds from waste incineration. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of the catalyst's composition, and operating conditions on benzene decomposition, and the relationship between molecular structures of catalysts and their activity was also investigated through replacing the conventional TiO2 catalyst support by nano-sized TiO2. Trace levels (1 and 10 ppm) of gaseous benzene were catalytically decomposed in a fixed-bed catalytic reactor with monolithic oxides of vanadium and tungsten supported on titanium oxide (V2O5-WO3/TiO2) catalysts under conditions simulating the cooling of waste incineration flue gas. On-line monitoring of trace benzene concentrations before and after the catalyst was achieved by means of resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (REMPI-TOFMS). Catalysts were characterized by nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, temperature-programmed reduction, and Raman spectroscopy. The effects of several parameters, including catalyst operating temperature, space velocity (SV) and initial benzene concentration, on catalytic oxidation of benzene were investigated. Experimental results indicate that reduction of the initial benzene concentration from 10 to 1 ppm either enhances or decreases the catalytic removal efficiency depending on the adsorption capability as well as the oxidation ability of the catalyst tested. The catalytic activity for benzene oxidation not simply relies on the vanadium content of the catalyst; the molecular structure of vanadium oxide, which is known to be influenced by both vanadium oxide loading and the type of support, is very important. Nano-sized TiO2 supported vanadium oxide catalyst (VWNT) with lowest V loading (0.75 wt.%) provides higher catalytic activity than those of the catalysts with higher V contents (1.31 and 2.92 wt.%) but supported by conventional TiO2 (VWT1 and VWT2). The relatively higher catalytic activity of VWNT may be attributed to: (a) the presence of monomeric VOx species, with one terminal V=O bond as indicated by Raman spectra; (b) fewer impurities confounding active catalytic constituents (V, W and Ti); (c) pure anatase phase of TiO2 rather than a mixture phase of anatase and rutile servicing as catalyst support besides its nano-scale particle size; (d) larger specific surface area, smaller average pore diameter, and narrower pore size distribution contribute higher adsorption ability for benzene. No obvious competition effect between NOx removal and benzene oxidation was observed in this study. Reaction rate constants and activation energies for benzene catalytic oxidation tested by the catalysts were calculated. Lower activation energy obtained from VWNT than those of the two catalysts further confirming the higher catalytic activity of VWNT. Published by Elsevier B.V.
Ceria accelerates ammonium bisulfate decomposition for improved SO2 resistance on a V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst in low-temperature NH3-SCR

Abstract:BackgroundAmmonia bisulfate (ABS) deposition on the active sites of the catalyst surface is the main reason for SO2 poisoning in low-temperature NH3-selective catalytic reduction (SCR). Accelerated ABS decomposition efficiently enhances the SO2 resistance.MethodsIn this work, ceria was specifically chosen to decorate V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst (Ce-VW/Ti) to activate ABS decomposition in low-temperature NH3-SCR.Significant findingsThe optimal 7Ce-VW/Ti catalyst accelerated the decomposition of ABS and had superior SO2 tolerance at 250°C. The additive CeO2 improved the specific surface area and surface acidity, favoring the NH3-SCR catalytic activity. ABS was preferentially deposited on the additive CeO2 on the surface of the 7Ce-VW/Ti catalyst and generated cerium sulfate, eventually protecting the active V2O5 sites and TiO2 support. Moreover, high quantity of V5+ and charge transfer between active species V2O5 and support TiO2 could be maintained due to CeO2 protection, subsequently maintaining the high NH3-SCR performance and enhancing the SO2 tolerance.

Abstract:Considering the risks of hydrothermal deterioration in vehicles, power plants, and oceangoing vessels, V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalysts were subject to hydrothermal and thermal aging at 600, 625, 635, and 650 °C for 4-48 h. The different ratio and significant loss of active sites are main reasons for catalyst deactivation. Both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites are involved in the selective catalytic reduction reaction. Brønsted acid sites are more susceptible. High temperature plays a major role in the aging. It causes sintering, particle growth, and the anatase phase transition. Phase transformation turns out to be less important than sintering. Sintering leads to the reduction of the BET surface area, which in turn causes decrease of NH3 adsorption amount and changes of active sites. Aging time can accelerate the degree of deactivation. It also helps to change the proportion of active sites. Water vapor has no significant effect on NO X conversion rates.
Dispersion of Tungsten Oxide on SCR Performance of V2O5WO3/TiO2: Acidity, Surface Species and Catalytic Activity

Abstract:Effects of tungsten on vanadium-based catalysts were studied under differently dispersed conditions of tungsten oxide on titania surface. Acidity, surface species and NH3-SCR performance over commercial WO3/TiO2 and V2O5WO3/TiO2 have been investigated. The incomplete dispersion of tungsten oxide gives rise to the formation of crystalline WO3 on titania surface, and the mounts of surface Brønsted acid sites decrease consequently. From the TPR and Raman spectra, it is indicated that two-dimensional vanadium species exhibits a tendency to moderately anchor onto titania surface in the immediate vicinity of tungsten species. It is also found that amorphous tungsten oxide has different impacts on the dispersion of vanadium species over titania surface at variable loadings of vanadia. At low vanadium loadings, amorphously distorted tungsten species show promoting effects on the formation and dispersion of two-dimensional vanadium species. With vanadium loadings increasing, amorphous tungsten species exert compressing effects on surface vanadium species and lead to the aggregation of vanadium oxide.

Abstract:Sulfur poisoning of V2O5/BaSO4-TiO2 (VBT), V2O5/WO3-TiO2 (VWT) and V2O5/BaSO4-WO3-TiO2 (VBWT) catalysts was performed in wet air at 350°C for 3hr, and activities for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 were evaluated for 200-500°C. The VBT catalyst showed higher NOx conversions after sulfur poisoning than the other two catalysts. The introduction of barium sulfate contributed to strong acid sites for the as-received catalyst, and eliminated the redox cycle of active vanadium oxide to some extent, which resulted in a certain loss of activity. Readily decomposable sulfate species formed on VBT-S instead of inactive sulfates on VWT-S. These decomposable sulfates increased the number of strong acid sites significantly. Some sulfate species escaped during catalyst preparation and barium sulfate was reproduced during sulfur poisoning, which protects vanadia from sulfur oxide attachment to a great extent. Consequently, the VBT catalyst exhibited the best resistance to sulfur poisoning.

Abstract:In this study, attention was focused on the interactions between NH4HSO4 and vanadium species in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3, along with the role of vanadium species in the reactivity of NH4HSO4 with NO on V2O5/TiO2 catalysts. Both vanadium and sulfate species occupied the TiO2 surface basic hydroxyl groups; the decreased TiO2 surface basic sites resulting from the introduction of NH4HSO4 in turn promoted the formation of polymeric vanadium species. Given increases in vanadium content, formation of polymeric vanadium species and reactive electrophilic oxygen species on the catalysts occurred, which was an important reason for the enhanced reactivity of NH4HSO4 with NO on the high V content catalysts. Besides, a higher electron cloud density around the S atoms in SO42- could be detected for the high V content catalysts, on which SO42- would be easily reduced to SO2 during the TPSR process. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy confirmed that NH4+ in NH4HSO4 functioned as a reductant during reaction with gaseous NO, while S-containing functional groups were stabilized as tridentate sulfate anions on the catalyst surface.

Abstract:A novel TiO2-supported vanadium-substituted tungstophosphoric acid (PW11V/TiO2) catalyst was designed and applied for selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3. Compared with the commercial tungstophosphoric acid (PW12/TiO2), PW11V/TiO2 displayed a nearly 90% activity improvement at 300 °C. In addition, the favorable resistance and stability to SO2 were also obtained over PW11V/TiO2 catalyst. Phase analysis and spectroscopy results indicated the vanadium was successfully incorporated into the molecular structure of PW12, and the Keggin framework still keep stable over the TiO2 support. H2-TPR test proved the incorporation of vanadium promoted the redox ability of PW11V. The present study provides us an effective way to improve the performance of catalytic removal of NOx through tungstophosphoric acid catalyst. After introduction of V species, the obtained PW11V/TiO2 catalyst show better NH3-SCR performance and N2 selectivity than PW12/TiO2 catalyst.
Recognizing the formation of single-atom vanadium by enthalpy and its advantage in selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxide

Abstract:Developing a more effective catalyst for the environmental pollutant is always the pursuit of worldwide researchers. In previous reports, most works were focused on prepared catalysts, and more efforts should explore process from a precursor to the formed catalyst. In this work, V supported TiO2 catalysts were synthesized with different V loadings, and compared in selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxide. For the first time, differential scanning calorimetry was used to analyze the forming enthalpy for these catalysts. As a result, turnover frequency (TOF) was decreased from 0.05 to 0.001 s−1 when the loading was increased from 0.05 to 15 mol%. At the same time, the forming enthalpy was decreased from 16.53 to 1.80 KJ·mol−1. Spherical Aberration Corrected Transmission Electron Microscope recognized both single-atom and cluster V even at the lowest loading. What’s more, density functional theory revealed that single-atom V had a lower dehydrogenation energy (1.088–1.152 eV) than cluster V during the catalysis (1.834–1.850 eV). According to these evidences, single-atom V had bigger formation enthalpy, lower dehydrogenation energy, and larger TOF than cluster V. These results help to optimize the preparation process for an effective catalyst, which is in favor of hazardous-pollutant treatment.

Abstract:Monometallic (V/TiO2 and Mo/TiO2) and bimetallic (V-Mo/TiO2) catalysts were prepared for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3 at low temperatures (100-300 degrees C). The effect of MoOx on the dispersion of vanadia with different V2O5 loadings was investigated on the basis of X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), N-2 adsorption-desorption, Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). As the molybdenum precursor, NH4Mo7O24 increased the solution acidity and promoted polymerization of VOx in liquid phase. At a low vanadia loading, polymerization of VOx, the adsorption rate of NH3 and transformation of active intermediate species -NH2 were enhanced by adding MoOx, while at a high vanadia loading, the steric hindrance became dominant leading to the formation of crystalline V2O5 and MoO3 and caused decline in SCR activity.
