Abstract:The separation of micro and nanoscale colloids is a necessary step in most biological microassay techniques, and is a common practice in microchemical processing. Chemical waves are frequently encountered in biochemical systems driven far from equilibrium. Here, we put forward a strategy for separating small suspending colloids by means of their surfing on substrate chemical wavefronts. The colloids with catalytic activities sensitive to the substrates are activated to show self-propulsion and consequently exhibit a chemotactic response to the traveling wavefronts, which results in their spontaneous separation from the multicomponent complex mixture via self-diffusiophoresis. The dynamics of the process is analyzed through a particle-based simulation. In addition, it is found that separation can be carried out according to particle size. The mechanisms underpinning the chemical and physical separation processes are discussed, and the dependencies on the reaction rate constant and particle size are presented. The results may prove relevant for further experimental and theoretical studies of separation in complex active environments.

Abstract:The preparation of nanoparticles can be conducted in a fast way by intensifying the micromixing due to the enhanced turbulence in an impinging jet Reactor (IJR) where the two linear liquid jets collide with high velocity to diminish the segregation. However, the micromixing is significantly affected by the occurrence of the stagnant region which may partially choke the reaction chamber. By imposing the ultrasound to the IJR, micro-scale turbulent eddies generated as the result of collapse of ultrasonically generated micro cavitation bubbles may generate a strong local shear. Such micro-scale turbulent vortices exert shear on the interface between the particles and surrounding fluid, resulting in uniform particle morphology and high surface area for chemical reaction. The paper aims to optimize the ultrasonic intensification effect on synthesis of nano-sized particles with desired homogeneity, reveal the governing mechanisms and present a kinetic model to describe the multiphase flow dynamics in the IJR. Except for the experimental method, numerical method was also used to demonstrate the impact of fluid dynamics on particle synthesis.
Computation-Aided Development of Next-Generation Extractants for Trivalent Actinide and Lanthanide Separation

Abstract:The chemical similarities between trivalent actinides [An(III)] and lanthanides [Ln(III)] present a significant challenge in differentiating and separating them, which is a key step toward closing the nuclear fuel cycle. However, the existing separation approaches commonly suffer from demerits such as inadequate separation factors, limited stripping efficiency, and undesired coextraction. In this study, a novel unsymmetrical phenanthroline-derived amide-triazine (Et-Tol-CyMe4-ATPhen) extractant was first designed and then screened with theoretical computation. Meanwhile, they were successfully synthesized by using a de novo construction method. As expected, Et-Tol-CyMe4-ATPhen exhibited a favorable extraction ability for Am(III) and minimal extraction for Ln(III), thereby achieving an extremely selective An(III)/Ln(III) separation with a separation factor of over 280. Furthermore, Am(III) could be easily and effectively stripped from the loaded phases using dilute nitric acid. The underlying coordination mechanisms were thoroughly elucidated by using 1H NMR, ESI-MS, UV-vis absorption spectrometry, photoluminescence spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This work holds promise for addressing the current challenges in An(III)/Ln(III) separation and represents a pioneering endeavor in developing next-generation extractants from first-principles calculation.
Separation of Lanthanides by High-Speed Countercurrent Chromatography with Organophosphate Ester

Abstract:High-speed countercurrent chromatography is a recently developed separation method that has been remarkably improved in both separating efficiency and separation time. In this paper, this advanced countercurrent chromatographic method was applied to the separation of lanthanides. In combination with the measurement of the partition coefficient of lanthanides, a suitable solvent system was chosen. The separation of a mixture containing the trivalent lanthanides La, Ce, Pr and Nd was performed with 0.15M P-507(2-ethythexyl-2-ethylhexyl hydrogen phosphate) chloroform : hydrochloric acid, pH=2.93, (1:1, V/V) solvent system. The resolution of adjacent bands was enhanced with increasing rotational speed, and was reduced with increasing flow rate of the mobile phase. This enhancement resulted from an increasing number of theoretical plates. Mutual separation of adjacent lanthanides was accomplished with adequate resolution.

Abstract:The lanthanide elements have well-documented similarities in their chemical behavior, which makes the valuable trivalent lanthanide cations (Ln(III)) particularly difficult to separate from each other in water. In this work, we apply ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to compare the free energies (Delta G(ads)) associated with the adsorption of lanthanide cations to silica surfaces at a pH condition where SiO- groups are present. The predicted Delta G(ads) for lutetium (Lu(III)) and europium (Eu(III)) are similar within statistical uncertainties; this is in qualitative agreement with our batch adsorption measurements on silica. This finding is remarkable because the two cations exhibit hydration free energies (Delta G(hyd}) that differ by >2 eV, different hydration numbers, and different hydrolysis behavior far from silica surfaces. We observe that the similarity in Lu(III) and Eu(III) Delta G(ads) is the result of a delicate cancellation between the difference in Eu(III) and Lu(III) hydration (Delta G(hyd})), and their difference in binding energies to silica. We propose that disrupting this cancellation at the two end points, either for adsorbed or completely desorbed lanthanides (e.g., via nanoconfinment or mixed solvents), will lead to effective Ln separation.

Abstract:With the development of manufacturing technology on the nanoscale, the precision of nano-devices is rapidly increasing with lower cost. Different from macroscale or microscale fluids, many specific phenomena and advantages are observed in nanofluidics. Devices and process involving and utilizing these phenomena play an important role in many fields in chemical engineering including separation, chemical analysis and transmission.In this article, we summarize the state-of-the-art progress in theoretical studies and manufacturing technologies on nanofluidics. Then we discuss practical applications of nanofluidics in many chemical engineering fields,especially in separation and encountering problems. Finally, we are looking forward to the future of nanofluidics and believe it will be more important in the separation process and the modern chemical industry.
Efficient Microfluidic Particle Separation Using Inertial Pre-Focusing and Pre-Separation Structures Without Sheath Flow

Abstract:This study introduces an innovative microfluidic particle separation technique that integrates inertial focusing with deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) on a single chip, significantly enhancing the efficiency of particle separation. This new method completes flow rate matching through a designed pre-focusing and pre-separation inertial structure, avoiding the use of sheath flow. The process involves a sequence of channels: a rectangular channel, a contraction-expansion array (CEA), a lateral separation channel, and another rectangular channel. This three-stage inertial method shortens the focusing channel length and reduces the pressure on subsequent separation stages, streamlining the separation process. It has been demonstrated to separate 20 μm particles from a mixture containing both 10 μm and 20 μm particles with remarkable precision. The technique achieves a 100% separation efficiency, ensuring all target particles are correctly isolated, and a 96.1% separation purity, indicating that the isolated particles are almost entirely free from contaminants. By eliminating the need for sheath flow, this method simplifies the apparatus and reduces operational complexity, offering significant advantages over traditional particle separation techniques. The high efficiency and purity levels achieved by this method highlight its potential for a wide range of applications in fields requiring precise particle separation, such as medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and industrial processing.

Abstract:Effect of hydrodynamic heterogeneity on micromixing intensification in a Taylor-Couette flow (TC) reactor with variable configurations of inner cylinder has been investigated by adoption of a parallel competing iodide-iodate reaction system. Two types of inner cylinder, circular inner cylinder and lobed inner cylinder (CTC and LTC), were used to generate hydrodynamic heterogeneity, focusing on the effects of the Reynolds number, the acid concentration, and the feeding time on the micromixing performance. Segregation index (Xs) was employed to evaluate the micromixing efficiency. It is revealed that Xs decreases with the increase of Reynolds number and feeding time but increases with the increase of acid concentration for both the CTC and LTC. However, the LTC does present a better micromixing performance at various operating conditions than that of the CTC as affirmed by both the experimental and computational fluid dynamics simulation results.
Microfluidic Co-Flow of Newtonian and Viscoelastic Fluids for High-Resolution Separation of Microparticles.

Abstract:The microfluidic passive control of microparticles largely relies on the hydrodynamic effects of the carrier media such as Newtonian fluids and viscoelastic fluids. Yet the viscoelastic/Newtonian interfacial effect has been scarcely investigated, especially for high-resolution particle separation. Here we report a microfluidic co-flow of Newtonian (water or PBS) and viscoelastic fluids (PEO) for the size-dependent separation of microparticles. The co-flow condition generates a stable viscoelastic/Newtonian interface, giving rise to the wall-directed elastic lift forces that compete with the center-directed lift forces, and efficiently hinders the migration of microparticles from the Newtonian to the viscoelastic fluid in a size-dependent manner. An almost complete separation of a binary mixture of 1 μm and 2 μm polystyrene particles is achieved by the co-flow of water and a very dilute PEO solution (100 ppm), whereas the sole use of water or PEO could not lead to an efficient separation. This co-flow microfluidic system is also applied for the separation of Staphylococcus aureus (1 μm) from platelets (2-3 μm) with >90% efficiencies and purities.

Abstract:A novel droplet-based approach for the mixing intensification was proposed in this study, where mixing occurred inside hanging droplets out of a micro-channel. Two miscible liquid streams were first confined into the same micro-channel but remained unmixed until the outlet by controlling flow conditions. When the segregated streams flowed out of the micro-channel, droplets would form spontaneously in the open-air environment. Thus, the simultaneous mixing would be activated by the inherent chaotic advection within each droplet. Meanwhile, the external disturbance could be conveniently applied on the droplets to enhance the inner chaotic flows for a better mixing performance. Planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) technique was employed to visualize the dynamic mixing behavior in each droplet. The results showed that a rich variety of mixing performance at different time scales could be achieved under well-controlled conditions. Additionally, the application of this approach for mixing intensification was demonstrated by the preparation of curcumin nano-particles (i.e., nano-drugs) in the antisolvent precipitation process. High quality products with spherical shape and narrow size distribution could be well obtained, and the initial concentration of the curcumin solution played a dominant role in the average particle size.

Abstract:Microscale Janus particles have versatile potential applications in many physical and biomedical fields, such as microsensor, micromotor, and drug delivery. Here, we present a phase-field approach of multicomponent and multiphase to investigate the Janus droplet formation via thermally induced phase separation. The crucial kinetics for the formation of Janus droplets consisting of two polymer species and a solvent component via an interplay of both diffusion and convection is considered in the Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes equation. The simulation results of the phase-field model show that unequal interfacial tensions between the two polymer species and the solvent result in asymmetric phase separation in the formation process of Janus droplets. This asymmetric phase separation plays a vital role in the establishment of the so-called core-shell structure that has been observed in previous experiments. By varying the droplet size, the surface tension, and the molecular interaction between the polymer species, several novel droplet morphologies are predicted in the development process of Janus droplets. Moreover, we stress that the hydrodynamics should be reckoned as a non-negligible mechanism that not only accelerates the Janus droplet evolution but also has great impacts on the coarsening and coalescence of the Janus droplets.

Nanosecond kinetics of phase separation in binary fluid studied by a combination of Laser-induced temperature jump and Forster Resonant Excitation Transfer probing

Abstract:A novel technique for studying the demixing of binary fluids with nanosecond time resolution at nanometer spatial resolution is demonstrated. Nanosecond kinetics of phase separation initial stages in the water/2,6-lutidine mixture studied through the combination of a laser-induced temperature jump, and Forster Resonant Excitation Transfer techniques. A pair of chromophores: 8-hydroxy-1,3,6-pyrenetrisulfonate (HPTS) and Coumarin 480 form a FRET pair in the uniform phase of the mixture and separate into the components of the mixture in the nonuniform phase. The temperature jump that brings the mixture into a nonuniform phase is performed by the mid-infrared laser pulse. The exponential growth stage of phase separation is in the 5 to 20 nanoseconds range. The demonstrated technique can be applied to a broad range of chemical and biological systems.

Multiphase Ferrofluid Flows for Micro-Particle Focusing and Separation

Abstract:Ferrofluids have demonstrated great potential for a variety of manipulations of diamagnetic (or non-magnetic) micro-particles/cells in microfluidics, including sorting, focusing, and enriching. By utilizing size dependent magnetophoresis velocity, most of the existing techniques employ single phase ferrofluids to push the particles towards the channel walls. In this work, we demonstrate a novel strategy for focusing and separating diamagnetic micro-particles by using the laminar fluid interface of two co-flowing fluids-a ferrofluid and a non-magnetic fluid. Next to the microfluidic channel, microscale magnets are fabricated to generate strong localized magnetic field gradients and forces. Due to the magnetic force, diamagnetic particles suspended in the ferrofluid phase migrate across the ferrofluid stream at the size-dependent velocities. Because of the low Reynolds number and high Péclet number associated with the flow, the fluid interface is sharp and stable. When the micro-particles migrate to the interface, they are accumulated near the interface, resulting in effective focusing and separation of particles. We investigated several factors that affect the focusing and separation efficiency, including susceptibility of the ferrofluid, distance between the microfluidic channel and microscale magnet, and width of the microfluidic channel. This concept can be extended to multiple fluid interfaces. For example, a complete separation of micro-particles was demonstrated by using a three-stream multiphase flow configuration.
Microscopic mechanism for nanoparticle-laden droplet–droplet electrocoalescence: A molecular dynamics study

Abstract:Electrocoalescence is an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly process for separating water-in-oil emulsions. In this study, nanoparticle-laden droplet–droplet electrocoalescence behaviors under external electric fields were numerically investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) methods. Good agreement was obtained between numerical results and experimental validation work. The influences of electric field strength, droplet diameter, nanoparticle (NP) concentration, NP size, and electric frequency were systematically examined, analyzed, and discussed from the perspective of intermolecular interactions. The NPs migrated to the liquid bridge to form nanoparticle shell under electric fields, and the NP brown motion increased the breakup probabilities, leading to partial electrocoalescence, which is undesirable in oil–water separation process. As to unequal droplets (droplet pairs of 6&4 nm, 6&6 nm, and 6&8 nm), the daughter droplets were always ejected from the apex of the small droplet. The NP concentrations influence not only the film coalescence process but also the droplet approach process, and high concentrations (0.15, 0.22 and 0.29 mol L−1) resulted in partial coalescence. The NP size also played significant roles during electrocoalescence. At large NP sizes (0.86 & 1.16 nm), the electrostatic repulsion between NPs played the dominant roles in the overall system, accounting for the PC mode with increasing NP size. In addition, applying high frequency (10 & 40 GHz) AC electric fields was found to be a time-saving and high-efficiency method. The results of this work will be potentially useful for optimizing the design of compact and efficient oil–water separators.

Abstract:This study presents an efficient method for the sequential separation of lanthanides and uranium using a high-performance ion exchange chromatographic column. The used SCX column provides both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions for the retention and separation of lanthanides and uranyl. Dual gradient elution (pH and α-hydroxyisobutyric acid concentration) enables continuous elution of uranyl before and after the elution of all the lanthanides. The proposed single-column separation protocol was validated by the effective separation of simulated spent nuclear fuel, which can be used to measure burn-up rates.

Abstract:.Summary of main observation and conclusion We present a new method for generating europium oxalate compounds by decomposing of N-methyl 2-pyrrolidone in HNO3 media. The reaction exhibits high selectivity towards Eu3+ over UO22+, which suggests that these conditions could be applied to a selective crystallization based separation system for trivalent lanthanides and hexavalent actinides.

Abstract:For the practical applications of droplet‐based microfluidics, we have paid special attention to the complex hydrodynamics and mixing performance inside microdroplets and the profound process intensification when forcing the droplets to move in winding channels. In this work, experimental studies using micro laser induced fluorescence (μ‐LIF) technique and three‐dimensional simulation based on a multiphase, multicomponents lattice Boltzmann model approach were adopted. The simulation results clearly revealed that the mixing inside the droplet is due to the convection in symmetric vortices in the two hemispheres of the droplet and the diffusion between them. They also showed the fluids inside the droplet could be reoriented due to the winding effect. Three designs of winding channels were studied, where interesting results showed the similar effect of process intensification by breaking up the flow symmetry. The revealed flow mechanism and the mixing performance inside the droplet in droplet‐based microfluidics should be helpful for microdevice design and optimization. © 2012 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 59: 1801–1813, 2013

Abstract:The selective extraction of minor actinides(III) from the lanthanides(III) is a key step for spent fuel reprocessing. Theoretical calculations of geometries, electronic structures, coordination complexion, and thermodynamic properties of the actinides are essential for understanding the separation mechanisms and relevant reactions. This article presents a critical review of theoretical studies on actinide systems involved in the An(III)/Ln(III) separation process. We summarize various theoretical methods for electronic and molecular scale modeling and simulations of actinide coordination systems. The complexing mechanisms between metal cations and organic ligands and the strategies for the design of novel ligands for separation are discussed as well. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Viscoelastic microfluidics becomes an efficient and label-free hydrodynamic technology to enrich and separate micrometer-scale particles, including blood cells, circulating tumor cells, and bacteria. However, the manipulation of nanoscale particles by viscoelastic microfluidics remains a major challenge, because the viscoelastic force acting on the smaller particle decreases dramatically. In contrast to the commonly used polymer solutions of high molecular weight, herein we utilize the aqueous solutions of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) of low molecular weight with minimized shear thinning but sufficient elastic force for high-quality focusing and separation of various nanoparticles. The focusing efficiencies of 100 nm polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles and λ-DNA molecules are 84% and 85%, respectively, in a double spiral microchannel, without the aid of sheath flows. Furthermore, we demonstrate the size-based viscoelastic separation of two sets of binary mixtures-100/2000 nm PS particles and λ-DNA molecules/blood platelets-all achieving separation efficiencies of >95% in the same device. Our proposal technique would be a promising approach for enrichment/separation of the nanoparticles encountered in applications of analytical chemistry and nanotechnology.
