Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate chemical contaminants penetrated into groundwater form the vadose zone. Infiltration experiment was performed in the field and an iodine-starch staining method was applied to visualize flow paths in the soils. The cluster analysis method was used to distinguish preferential flow regions. Base on the difference of water content before and after infiltration and the volume of the stained region, the recovered water content was calculated. Results showed that stained patterns played a much important role in redistribution of infiltration water than the soil saturation change in the stained region. The chemical contaminants concentration decreased dramatically in the upper depth and then the decreasing trend was slowed down. The chemical contaminants transport is more complex than water flow.
