Abstract:Dynamic covalent polymer networks have long been recognized. With the initial focus on the unintended impact of dynamic covalent linkages on the viscoelasticity of commercial rubbers, efforts in modern times have transitioned into designing dynamic covalent polymer networks with unique adaptive properties. Whereas self‐healing and thermoset reprocessing have been the primary motivations for studying dynamic covalent polymer networks, the recent discovery of the vitrimeric rheological behavior and solid‐state plasticity for this type of material have opened up new opportunities in material innovations. This, coupled with the revelation of the dynamic characteristics of commercially relevant polymer building blocks such as esters and urethanes, suggests a promising future for this class of materials.

Abstract:Supramolecular bonds have been widely used for designing polymers because of their reversible nature. In contrast, utilization of their dynamic equilibrium nature to access materials of unusual mechanical properties has been poorly explored. Taking full advantage of this latter attribute requires the design of polymer networks with high contents of supramolecular bonds. In this work, polymer networks with high contents of self‐complementary hydrogen bonds (ureidopyrimidinone) are synthesized using thiol–acrylate click addition. The excellent tunability of the network allows a range of intriguing mechanical properties to be achieved including the transition from plasticity to elasticity, ultrasoft shape memory polymer, strong strain rate dependence, and high mechanical damping. Materials with such versatile dynamic behaviors may open up a range of new applications.

Abstract:We combine experimental analysis and modeling to investigate the complex mechanical behaviors of copolymer elastomers. Experimental studies are conducted to analyze the impact of monomer ratio, strain rate, and loading mode on the response of copolymer elastomers, which reveal the distinct hyperelastic, viscoelastic, damage and self-recovery behaviors of the materials. Based on the experimental observations, we develop a finite deformation hyperelastic-viscoelastic constitutive model, which incorporates multiple discrete relaxation processes. For the hyperelastic process, an extended eight-chain model is employed. Different from the classic viscoelastic model, the strain hardening and damage/recovery mechanisms are also included in the relaxation processes. The model successfully describes the complex mechanical responses observed in elastomers, including quasi-static loading, strain rate effects, and stress relaxation phenomena. Additionally, the model captures the behavior of elastomers during loading-unloading cycles in a reasonable manner. The work offers an efficient theoretical tool for the design and practical application of elastomers.
A Facile Strategy to Fabricate Tough and Adhesive Elastomers by In Situ Formation of Coordination Complexes as Physical Crosslinks

Abstract:Tough and adhesive elastomers are facilely developed via one‐pot photopolymerization of aqueous precursor solutions with in situ formation of sulfonate‐Zr4+ coordination complexes followed by solvent evaporation. Mechanical robustness and self‐adhesion properties enable the elastomer films to devise versatile soft electronics with patterned liquid metal and microchips. Coordination bonds with a dynamic nature and wide‐spectrum bond energy have gained great popularity in use for fabricating tough soft materials. However, most existing coordination‐based elastomers are prepared through complicated procedures, usually involving elaborate synthesis of ligand‐containing monomers or polymers, ion diffusion to form coordination complexes, and removal of organic solvent during the synthesis, which are neither easy operation nor environmentally friendly. Here, a facile and effective strategy is demonstrated to fabricate tough metallosupramolecular elastomers by one‐pot polymerization of aqueous precursor solutions containing commercial agents, 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulfonic acid, 2‐[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]ethyl acrylate, and Zr4+ ions. After solvent (i.e. water) evaporation, the obtained elastomers are transparent and extremely tough owing to the presence of sulfonate‐Zr4+ coordination complexes as physical crosslinks. Their mechanical properties are tunable over a wide spectrum by adjusting the composition of copolymers and the density of coordination bonds. This eco‐friendly strategy is further extended to various commercial monomers, manifesting good universality to toughen elastomers. Furthermore, the abundant functional groups of copolymers make the elastomers adhesive to various substrates including themselves, favoring applications such as interfacial adhesion and encapsulations. The easy fabrication, tunable mechanical properties, and adhesion ability endow the elastomers with great potential as the substrate of wearable soft electronics.

Abstract:Low activation efficiency of mechanosensitive groups in bulk materials challenges the expansion of practical applications of mechanochemistry. Here, we wish to report a topological approach to address this problem. Assembling dynamic mechanophores in a bottlebrush topology can increase the scission probability and unlock multiple rounds of activation. This concept is materialized via a new ring-opening polymerization reaction of cyclic carbonates followed by cross-linking with thermoplastic polyurethanes. The resulting elastomers, featuring advanced topology at the cross-linking points, display enhanced mechanosensitivity, high mechanical performance, and training-induced self-strengthening behavior without chemical amplification with a second component.

Abstract:Reinforcement, recycling, and functional applications are three important issues in elastomer science and engineering. It is of great importance, but rarely achievable, to integrate these properties into elastomers. Herein, we report a simple way to prepare covalently cross-linked yet recyclable, robust, and macroscopically responsive elastomer vitrimers by engineering exchangeable bonds into rubber–carbon nanodot (CD) interphase using CD as high-functionality cross-linker. The cross-linked rubbers can rearrange the network topology through transesterification reactions in the interphase, conferring the materials the ability to be recycled, reshaped, and welded. The relatively short chains bridging adjacent CD are highly stretched and preferentially rupture to dissipate energy under external force, resulting in remarkable improvements on the mechanical properties. Abstract:A strong and tough self-healing elastomer is prepared based on double reversible networks consisting of ionic interactions and Diels-Alder (D-A) crosslinks. The elastomer is synthesized through one-pot copolymerization of a pair of oppositely charged monomers and furan functionalized methacrylate (FMA), which is then crosslinked with 1,1'-(Methylenebis(4,1-phenylene))bis(1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione) (BMI) via Diels-Alder (D-A) reaction. The oppositely charged monomers form ionic bonds which can segregate into aggregates with a wide distribution of size. Under heating or external force, the aggregates can dissociate from small to big ones to dissipate amount of energy and endow the materials with high mechanical properties (13 MPa in strength, 480% in stretchability). While the D-A crosslinks act as covalent bonds at room temperature and endow the materials with high elasticity and fast shape recovery ability. These two reversible networks with different dynamics contribute to the multiscale self-healing properties of the elastomer. As a result, the self-healing efficiency of the elastomer is as high as 86%.

Abstract:Elastomers and hydrogels with dynamic network structures have received considerable research interest due to their high strength and toughness, and self-healing ability. While the general mechanical responses of dynamic polymer networks have been investigated, the study on their fatigue behaviors is still in its infancy. In this work, we employ experimental and theoretical approaches to gain a comprehensive understanding of the mechanical response of an elastomer with physical crosslinkers under fatigue tests up to 10,000 cycles. The constitutive model characterizes the network configuration using the density distribution function of the polymer chains, which is represented by a state variable denoting the stress-free configuration of each individual chain. The model takes into account the reversible dissociation/association of dynamic bonding facilitated by the physical crosslinkers. As a result, polymer chains can repeatedly release the involved strain energy and transform between different stress-free configurations. A multidispersed reaction process is further employed to describe the state transition of polymer chains, enabling the model to elucidate the progressive damage in long-term relaxation and fatigue tests by recording and updating the density distribution function of chain state. In addition, the reversible transition of the polymer chain between different state configurations enables the model to capture the rate-dependent stress response and relaxation behaviors of physically crosslinked elastomers and gels. Remarkably, our microscopic model, which requires only five parameters, offers an efficient approach to describe the mechanical responses of elastomers and gels with dynamic bonds.
Ultra-Tough, Strong, and Defect-Tolerant Elastomers with Self-Healing and Intelligent-Responsive Abilities

Abstract:Mechanical strength, toughness, and defect tolerance are usually exclusive in most artificial materials. Herein, inspired by many biomaterials that overcome this tradeoff by integrating soft and hard ingredients through elaborate structural designs, we report a facile latex-assembly method to fabricate ultra-tough, strong, and defect-tolerant elastomers. The elastomers are featured by a microscopic inverse opal-mimetic rigid skeleton of dynamically cross-linked chitosan and a continuous soft matrix of vulcanized natural rubber. Such structural design enables the load-bearing capability, sacrificial property, and self-healing ability of the skeleton, the stress redistribution and extensibility of the matrix, and the stiffness variation between hard and soft ingredients, thereby imparting the elastomers with outstanding mechanical strength and defect tolerance, as well as extremely high toughness of 122 KJ m-2, which is even higher than that of the current state-of-the-art titanium alloys. Moreover, the elastomers show prominent humidity sensitivity due to the hydrophilic nature of the chitosan skeleton. Harnessing these advantages, we fabricate a walking robot triggered by humidity variation and shoes that are able to regulate temperature and humidity. The concept of designing a rigid sacrificial skeleton within a soft continuous matrix on the microscale is quite general, enabling the development of high-performance and intelligent materials for emerging applications.
Tough self-healing elastomers by molecular enforced integration of covalent and reversible networks

Abstract:Self-healing polymers crosslinked by solely reversible bonds are intrinsically weaker than common covalently crosslinked networks. Introducing covalent crosslinks into a reversible network would improve mechanical strength. It is challenging, however, to apply this design concept to dry elastomers, largely because reversible crosslinks such as hydrogen bonds are often polar motifs, whereas covalent crosslinks are non-polar motifs, and these two types of bonds are intrinsically immiscible without co-solvents. Here we design and fabricate a hybrid polymer network by crosslinking randomly branched polymers carrying motifs that can form both reversible hydrogen bonds and permanent covalent crosslinks. The randomly branched polymer links such two types of bonds and forces them to mix on the molecular level without co-solvents. This allows us to create a hybrid dry elastomer that is very tough with a fracture energy $13,500J/m^2$ comparable to that of natural rubber; moreover, the elastomer can self-heal at room temperature with a recovered tensile strength 4 MPa similar to that of existing self-healing elastomers. The concept of forcing covalent and reversible bonds to mix at molecular scale to create a homogenous network is quite general and should enable development of tough, self-healing polymers of practical usage.

Abstract:Superior mechanical properties are attributed to the synergistic effects of microscale alignment of nanosheets and robust interfacial bonding between the polymer chains and nanosheets at the nanoscale. Well‐dispersed nanosheets transfer load effectively through strong interfacial bonding with the polymer, significantly suppressing fatigue crack propagation. The development of rigid yet fatigue‐resistant elastomers possess a critical challenge, necessitating materials capable of enduring substantial mechanical loads while maintaining structural integrity through cycles of deformations. Despite soft materials achieving a fatigue threshold of ∼1000 J m−2, their modulus, typically ∼1 MPa, restricts their applications. This study presents a breakthrough in designing rigid, fatigue‐resistant elastomers by controlling nanosheet orientation within the network using a shear force strategy. The elastomers achieve a high fatigue threshold of 1900 J m−2 while maintaining a high elastic modulus of 8 MPa. These superior mechanical properties are attributed to the synergistic effects of microscale alignment of nanosheets and robust interfacial bonding between the polymer chains and nanosheets at the nanoscale. When the nanosheet volume fraction is below the percolation threshold, well‐dispersed nanosheets transfer load effectively through strong interfacial bonding with the polymer, significantly suppressing fatigue crack propagation. Conversely, above the percolation threshold, agglomerated nanosheets create defects in the matrix, reducing load‐bearing capacity. The innovative elastomers demonstrate potential for a wide range of applications, including automotive components, actuators, and stretchable electronic devices, where high mechanical stability and load‐bearing capacity are essential.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive structurally dynamic polymers are capable of mimicking the biological systems to adapt themselves to the surrounding environmental changes and subsequently exhibiting a wide range of responses ranging from self-healing to complex shape-morphing. Dynamic self-healing polymers (SHPs), shape-memory polymers (SMPs), and liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), which are three representative examples of stimuli-responsive structurally dynamic polymers, have been attracting broad and growing interest in recent years because of their potential applications in the fields of electronic skin, sensors, soft robots, artificial muscles, and so on. Recent advances and challenges in the developments toward dynamic SHPs, SMPs, and LCEs are reviewed, focusing on the chemistry strategies and the dynamic reaction mechanisms that enhance the performances of the materials including self-healing, reprocessing, and reprogramming. The different dynamic chemistries and their mechanisms on the enhanced functions of the materials are compared and discussed, where three summary tables are presented: A library of dynamic bonds and the resulting characteristics of the materials. Finally, a critical outline of the unresolved issues and future perspectives on the emerging developments is provided.

Abstract:<p>Current synthetic elastomers suffer from the well‐known trade‐off between toughness and stiffness. By a combination of multiscale experiments and atomistic simulations, a transparent unfilled elastomer with simultaneously enhanced toughness and stiffness is demonstrated. The designed elastomer comprises homogeneous networks with ultrastrong, reversible, and sacrificial octuple hydrogen bonding (HB), which evenly distribute the stress to each polymer chain during loading, thus enhancing stretchability and delaying fracture. Strong HBs and corresponding nanodomains enhance the stiffness by restricting the network mobility, and at the same time improve the toughness by dissipating energy during the transformation between different configurations. In addition, the stiffness mismatch between the hard HB domain and the soft poly(dimethylsiloxane)‐rich phase promotes crack deflection and branching, which can further dissipate energy and alleviate local stress. These cooperative mechanisms endow the elastomer with both high fracture toughness (17016 J m<sup>−2</sup>) and high Young's modulus (14.7 MPa), circumventing the trade‐off between toughness and stiffness. This work is expected to impact many fields of engineering requiring elastomers with unprecedented mechanical performance.</p>

Abstract:Combining different reversibly connecting mechanisms in a single system constitutes an efficient method to multi-functionalize dynamic polymer materials but normally requires complicated molecular designs. Herein we report a class of omni-dynamic silicone elastomers that can be directly prepared via simple anionic ring-opening polymerization (AROP) of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) with bis(tetramethylammonium)oligodimethyl siloxanediolate (BTMASA) as the bifunctional initiator. The polymerization leads to the formation of telechelic polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) that would immediately undergo microphase separation to form elastic products. On the one hand, the tetramethylammonium siloxanolate (TMASA) terminals of the telechelic PDMS aggregate into charged domains serving as dissociative supramolecular crosslinking interactions in the products. On the other hand, the TMASA groups maintain their activities after polymerization and can catalyze associative chain exchange reactions among PDMS chains. Such a unique structure endows the silicone elastomers with good solubility in solvents like tetrahydrofuran (THF), appealing mechanical properties (elastic, stretchable, tough), and excellent degradability. In this system, the BTMASA plays multiple roles, including an initiator for AROP, a building block for supramolecular crosslinking, and a catalyst for chain exchange. We believe such a one-to-three concept will open a new direction for the design of novel dynamic polymer materials.

Abstract:Stretchable and autonomously self-healable elastomers with wide-ranging tunable mechanical properties have attracted increasing attention in various industries. To date, it continues to be a huge challenge to synthesize self-healing elastomers integrating extreme stretchability, relatively high mechanical modulus, and autonomous and rapid self-healing capability. Abstract:Achieving ultrafast resilience comparable to that of irreversible cross-linking elastomers remains a formidable challenge for self-healing supramolecular elastomers. Herein, we construct a π-type tweezer structure formed by imidazolidinylurea and aromatic imine to stabilize dynamical hard domains (SDHDs) in polyurethane (PU) elastomers. SDHDs endow the dynamic PU network with high binding energy and minimal stress relaxation at room temperature, similar to irreversible covalent cross-links. As such, the elastomer demonstrates rapid resilience comparable to vulcanized natural rubber as well as high mechanical strength and toughness. Meanwhile, SDHDs can be readily activated upon heating, enabling exceptional healing ability (∼100% healing efficiency) under mild conditions (50 °C) and complete recovery of mechanical properties after recycling. More interestingly, the PU elastomer exhibits significant elastocaloric effects with an adiabatic temperature change of −13.5 °C, surpassing that of state-of-the-art vulcanized natural rubber (−9.4 °C). Therefore, this work presents a new approach for structural design that enables a balance between conflicting characteristics and expands the potential applications of self-healing supramolecular elastomers.

Abstract:Integration of high toughness, fracture resistance, and fast self-healing, as well as robust adhesion is critically required for flexible electronics, healthcare monitoring, and electronic skins. However, it still remains a critical challenge to combine these significant functions into one material. Here, we synthesize an elastomer by copolymerizing two acrylate monomers containing functional groups and established hierarchical dipolar interactions and hydrogen bonds between C-F, C=O, -O-CH 3 , and C-H groups with different bonding strengths, which successfully not only combines with high toughness (31.41 ± 1.12 MJ m −3 ), outstanding crack resistance (fracture energy: 10252 ± 208 J m −2 ), fast self-healing (completely restore within 30 min at room temperature), but also with fast, repeatable, and toughness adhesion to different substrates, e.g. PMMA, Aluminum, glass, steel, and PTFE. The PF 4 M 6 demonstrates great sensing performance in detecting human motion. Overall, this work provides some insights for preparing high-performance, healing, and adhesive elastomer materials applied in electronics, adhesives, and interface materials.
