Abstract:A new kind of alkoxy silane functionalized polymer (ASFP) is synthesized by selectively functionalized carboxyl groups as a novel inorganic precursor polymer to prepare organic‐inorganic hybrid membrane for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) system. The novel hybrid membrane has been fabricated by interconnection between hydrophilic domains of Nafion and ASFP functional group. The effective concentration of ASFP for hybrid membrane is 25% (wt/wt). The proton conductivity and selectivity of the hybrid membrane are comparable with those of the Nafion212 membrane, which is mainly attributed by the presence of additional hydrophilic domains in the hybrid membrane. The proton conductivity and ion exchange capacity of the Nafion‐ASFP (75:25) membrane is 0.061 S/cm and 0.68 meq/g, respectively. Remarkably, the Nafion‐ASFP membrane shows a low vanadium permeability (1.259 × 10−7 cm2/min) and high selectivity, which is an excellent advantage. As a result, the hybrid membrane shows comparable efficiency performance with Nafion212 over 50 cycles. Notably, the VRFB unit cell with Nafion‐ASFP membrane achieves higher coulombic efficiency than Nafion212. The hybrid membrane reveals a new route to develop an alternative fluorinated polymer membrane with numerous advantages especially cost‐effectiveness, homogeneous dispersion of inorganic silica precursor materials in the hybrid membrane without deterioration of mechanical strength, and lower vanadium ion crossover for VRFB system.

Surface-Modified Approach to Fabricate Nafion Membranes Covalently Bonded with Polyhedral Oligosilsesquioxane for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

Abstract:An aminopropyl isobutyl polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane (NH2-POSS) surface-modified Nafion membrane has been designed by chemical grafting for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). NH2-POSS is a cage-like macromer consisting of an inorganic Si8O12 core surrounded by seven inert isobutyl groups and one active aminopropyl group. The sulfonic acid groups on the surface of Nafion can be activated by 1,1-carbonyldiimidazole for further modification with NH2-POSS. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) prove that NH2-POSS has been successfully grafted on the surface of a Nafion 115 membrane. Although the proton conductivity decreases slightly, the organic-inorganic hybrid membranes display enhanced ion selectivity and excellent dimensional stability with lower water uptake and swelling ratio than Nafion 115. Moreover, two-dimensional-grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (2D-GIXRD) reveals that the introduction of NH2-POSS forms a POSS layer on the surface of the membrane and narrows the space of Nafion clusters, which helps to block VO2+ permeation. A VRFB with the surface-modified Nafion membrane displays an outstanding performance with an average Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 98.7% and energy efficiency (EE) of 84.5% at a current density of 80 mA cm-2, superior to those of the Nafion 115 membrane (CE = 95.7%, EE = 81.7%). Furthermore, the cell holds a high capacity retention of 49.2% after 1000 charge-discharge cycles, in contrast to that of 41.9% for the cell with Nafion 115 after only 200 cycles. The results suggest that the surface-modified hybrid membrane is a promising strategy to overcome the vanadium ion crossover in VRFBs.

Abstract:Anionic conductive group repels vanadium ions but is difficult to be incorporated into the selectively ionic conductive channels of the amphoteric ion conductive membrane with tunable ratio. Herein, the novel hydroxyl bromopropane anionic precursor side chain is proposed, in which the hydrophilic hydroxyl groups aggregate into ionic clusters with the sulfate ester cationic conductive side chains of polybenzimidazole via hydrogen bond during membrane casting. The subsequent conversion of the bromopropane precursor to quaternary ammonium can easily tune the anionic exchange capacity and integrate cations into the hydroxyl involved ionic conductive channels for selectively repelling vanadium ions. Compared with Nafion 212 membrane, the obtained ampho-teric membrane exhibits much lower vanadium ion permeability (1.9 x 10(-9) cm(2)s(-1)) and slightly lower area resistance (0.25 Omega cm(2)). Excellent performance of vanadium redox flow battery (coulombic efficiency, 99.2%, energy efficiency, 85.9% at 100 mA cm(-2) and 0.31% discharge decay rate) is achieved, and efficiencies keep stable during the 500 cycles test. The performance of VRFB is surpass than that of most reported amphoteric ion conductive and Nafion 212 membranes.

Abstract:The development of a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) urgently requires proton conductive membranes with high proton selectivity. Herein, we synthesized branched anhydride monomer 1,3,5-tris(3,4-anhydride phenoxy)benzene using a three-step method. Furthermore, we prepared successfully novel double branched sulfonated polyimide (dbSPI) membranes with ultra-low vanadium ion permeability (0.4–2.5×10−8 cm2 min−1), one or two orders of magnitude lower than that of the Nafion 212 membrane (7.25×10−7 cm2 min−1). Among all membranes, the dbSPI-50 membrane with the highest proton selectivity (23.25×105 S min cm−3), approximately 68 times higher than that of the Nafion 212 membrane, was chosen for assembling of a VRFB single cell. Because of its ultra-low vanadium ion permeability, the dbSPI-50 membrane exhibited much longer self-discharge time (97 h) and superior capacity retention (82.6–91.3%) compared with the Nafion 212 membrane. Moreover, both coulomb efficiency (99.6–98.5%) and energy efficiency (69.3–80.1%) of the dbSPI-50 membrane are higher than those of the Nafion 212 membrane after 300 times charge-discharge tests at a current density from 200 to 100 mA cm−2. All these results demonstrate that the optimized dbSPI-50 membrane is a promising candidate for applications in VRFBs.

Abstract:The development of high-performance ion exchange membranes to break the trade-off between ion selectivity and conductivity is always a great challenge for the vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). Herein, a hybrid membrane was successfully prepared via the solution casting method. The UiO-66-SO3H was embedded in Nafion matrix, acting as an effective barrier for vanadium ions to realize enhanced ion selectivity. At the same time, besides the intrinsic proton cluster channels in Nafion, two types of additional proton transport channels formed in the membranes, which further improved the conductivity of the membranes. Consequently, the VRFB with an optimized hybrid membrane exhibited enhanced voltage efficiency (VEs: 91.5-78.4%) and outstanding energy efficiency (EEs: 86.0-76.1%) compared with the one with recasting Nafion membrane (rNf) (VEs: 86.9-69.0%, EEs: 80.3-66.0%) at 80–220 mA cm-2. The efficiency kept stable for 1000 cycles in the long-term cycling tests, and the discharge capacity decay rate of the VRFB with the hybrid membrane is only 0.13% per cycle, which is in obvious contrast to the one with rNf (0.73% per cycle). In addition, the electrolyte utilization rate of the VRFB assembled with the hybrid membrane was much higher than that of the one with rNf.

Abstract:Sol–gel derived Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane is prepared and employed as the separator for vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) to evaluate the vanadium ions permeability and cell performance. Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane shows nearly the same ion exchange capacity (IEC) and proton conductivity as pristine Nafion 117 membrane. ICP-AES analysis reveals that Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane exhibits dramatically lower vanadium ions permeability compared with Nafion membrane. The VRB with Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane presents a higher coulombic and energy efficiencies over the entire range of current densities (10–80 mA cm−2), especially at relative lower current densities (<30 mA cm−2), and a lower self-discharge rate compared with the Nafion system. The performance of VRB with Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane can be maintained after more than 100 cycles at a charge–discharge current density of 60 mA cm−2. The experimental results suggest that the Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane approach is a promising strategy to overcome the vanadium ions crossover in VRB.

Abstract:Nafion/organic silica hybrid membrane was prepared via an in situ sot-gel reaction method and the ion exchange capacity (IEC), conductivity and water transport rate of the hybrid membrane were measured. Results indicate that compared with Nafion membrane, the hybrid membrane can efficiently block water transfer across the membrane. The average coulombic efficiency and energy efficiency of the VRB with the Nafion/organic silica membrane were all remarkably increased. Furthermore, the Nafion/organic silica 2 hybrid membrane is very stable for more than 80 charge-discharge cycles at current density of 60 mA.cm(-2). Results show that the Nafion/organic silica membrane is a novel hybrid membrane and applicable to VRB.

Abstract:A novel amphiprotic side-chain-functionalized membrane was for the first time designed for vanadium redox flow battery (VFB). Different from frequently used blending amphiprotic membranes, the one proposed here is allowed to possess high anion-exchange capacity (IECa) without sacrificing the cation-exchange capacity (IECc) because both IECa and IECc increased with the grafting degree of side chains. Having a high IECa, the membrane prepared here exhibits an ultralow vanadium permeability (<10-8 cm2 s-1), which leads to very high Coulombic efficiencies (97-98% at 40-200 mA cm-2) of VFB and good cell self-discharge durability. Moreover, the high IECc contributes to a decent ionic conductivity (area resistance: 0.5 Ω cm-2), which ensures a high-voltage efficiency of the cell. On the basis of these good properties, the VFB single cell with this membrane achieves a high energy efficiency (e.g., 77.4% at 200 mA cm-2) that is higher than those of Nafion 212 and other reported amphiprotic membranes. These results indicate that the approach proposed here is an ideal option to prepare amphiprotic membranes for VFBs with high efficiency and good durability.
A novel imidazolium-based amphoteric membrane for high-performance vanadium redox flow battery

Abstract:A novel amphoteric membrane was prepared using imidazolium-functionalized polysulfone (ImPSf) as the base polymer and sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) as the acid polymer for vanadium flow battery applications. The introduction of the ImPSf effectively resists the migration of vanadium ions owing to the Donnan repelling effect of the imidazolium cations on the vanadium ions and the low swelling ratio of the amphoteric membranes due to the ionic cross-linked interactions between the imidazolium and sulfonic groups. The amphoteric membrane with an ImPSf mass ratio of 17% shows a vanadium permeability of 1.5 × 10−8cm2s−1 that is much lower than that of Nafion212 (21 × 10−8cm2s−1). Having a high IEC of 2.04mmolg−1, it also exhibits a low area resistance of 0.48Ωcm−2 that is comparable to that of Nafion212 membrane (0.41Ωcm−2). As a result, the VFB cell with the amphoteric membrane exhibits high performances even at high current densities, i.e. at a current density of 200mAcm−2, and the amphoteric membrane achieves a coulombic efficiency of 97.5% and an energy efficiency of 77.3%, both of which are higher than those of Nafion212 (92.4% and 73.4%). These results indicate that the ImPSf/SPEEK amphoteric membrane is promising for VFB applications.

Abstract:Nafion has gained widespread recognition as the predominant membrane due to its good proton conductivity, robust chemical resistance, and commendable mechanical stability. However, due to its well-developed water channels, it has poor barrier properties toward vanadium ions. Herein, to reduce vanadium ions permeability across the membranes without compromising the proton conductivity, graphene nanofiber (Herringbone type, GNF-H) as a filler has been incorporated into the Nafion matrix to fabricate the composite membrane. The membranes were subjected to physiochemical characterization, vanadium ion permeability, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and galvanostatic charge-discharge at different current densities. Vanadium permeability has significantly reduced in the 0.75% and 1% GNF-H composite membranes. Composite membranes (0.5%, 0.75%, and 1% GNF-H) showed a capacity of ~18.2, ~18.9, and ~16.8 Ah L −1 at 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, whereas Nafion TM 117 exhibited only ~16.3 Ah L −1 capacity at the same current density. The peak power of the cells consisted of 0.5, 0.75, and 1% GNF-H composite membrane and Nafion TM 117 is ~538, ~507, ~465 and 388 mW cm −2 , respectively. The present study concludes that applying Nafion/GNF-H in the VRFB system can be a promising strategy to reduce the vanadium ion permeation, cost-cutting and improve the VRFB performance.

Abstract:In our previous work, Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane was prepared via in situ sol–gel method and used for the vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) system. The VRB with modified Nafion membrane has shown great advantages over that of the VRB with Nafion membrane. In this work, a novel Nafion/organically modified silicate (ORMOSIL) hybrids membrane was prepared via in situ sol–gel reactions for mixtures of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and diethoxydimethylsilane (DEDMS). The primary properties of Nafion/ORMOSIL hybrids membrane were measured and compared with Nafion and Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane. The permeability of vanadium ions through the Nafion/ORMOSIL hybrids membrane was measured using an UV–vis spectrophotometer. The results indicate that the hybrids membrane has a dramatic reduction in crossover of vanadium ions compared with Nafion membrane. Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR) analysis of the hybrids membrane reveals that the ORMOSIL phase is well formed within hybrids membrane. Cell tests identify that the VRB with Nafion/ORMOSIL hybrids membrane presents a higher coulombic efficiency (CE) and energy efficiency (EE) compared with that of the VRB with Nafion and Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane. The highest EE of the VRB with Nafion/ORMOSIL hybrids membrane is 87.4% at 20mAcm−2, while the EE of VRB with Nafion and the EE of VRB with Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane are only 73.8% and 79.9% at the same current density. The CE and EE of VRB with Nafion/ORMOSIL hybrids membrane is nearly no decay after cycling more than 100 times (60mAcm−2), which proves the Nafion/ORMOSIL hybrids membrane possesses high chemical stability during long charge–discharge process under strong acid solutions. The self-discharge rate of the VRB with Nafion/ORMOSIL hybrids membrane is the slowest among the VRB with Nafion, Nafion/SiO2 and Nafion/ORMOSIL membrane, which further proves the excellent vanadium ions blocking characteristic of the prepared hybrids membrane.
Nanoscale Solid Superacid-Coupled Polybenzimidazole Membrane with High Ion Selectivity for Flow Batteries

Abstract:Nanoscale solid superacid SO42–/ZrO2/WO3 is coupled into imidazole-hydroxyl-quaternary ammonium co-functionalized polybenzimidazole (PG112) to address the trade-off effect of membrane for large-scale flow battery application. Nanoscale SO42–/ZrO2/WO3 particles with high sulfonic groups are dispersed in membrane as redox-active ion barriers and proton carriers, which mitigate the electrolyte crossover and maintain high ion conductivity. The VO2+ permeability of the prepared membrane (7.86 × 10–10 cm2 s–1) is significantly lower than those of PG112 (3.93 × 10–9 cm2 s–1) and Nafion 212 (7.76 × 10–8 cm2 s–1) membranes. The vanadium flow battery with this membrane exhibits a longer self-discharge duration time of 231 h compared with Nafion 212 (35 h) and PG112 (88 h) membranes. High coulombic efficiencies of 97.5–99.2% at 40–120 mA cm–2 are obtained for the prepared membrane, which are higher than those for Nafion 212 (78.0–92.8%) and PG112 membranes (96.2–98.6%). Stable cycle performance and low retention capacity are also observed, suggesting the excellent chemical stability of the prepared membrane in vanadium flow battery operation. This work provides a prospective and applicable membrane to enhance the performance of flow battery.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:To improve the selectivity of Nafion membrane, reduce the crossover of vanadium ions and decrease water transfer across the membranes used in VRB systems, the sol–gel method was employed to obtain a composite membrane of Nafion/organic silica modified TiO2 (Nafion/Si/Ti hybrid membrane). The preparation technique and characteristics of the composite membrane were described. The water transfer and the permeability of vanadium ions were also measured. Results showed that crossover of vanadium ions and water transfer across the membrane for the composite membrane have a remarkable decrease comparing with the unmodified Nafion membrane. It has been confirmed by EDX and FT-IR analysis of the modified membrane that the Si and Ti elements distributed uniformly in the prepared membrane. As a result, the coulombic efficiency of the VRB single cell with modified Nafion membrane was higher than that of the VRB single cell with pristine Nafion membrane. The ion exchange capacity (IEC), the area resistance and the water uptake of the composite membrane were also evaluated. Furthermore, the open circuit voltage (OCV) of the VRB with modified and unmodified Nafion membrane has been carried out and cycle performance of the VRB with modified membrane proves that it has high stability in strong acid condition.
A cost-effective nafion/lignin composite membrane with low vanadium ion permeation for high performance vanadium redox flow battery

Abstract:Here we report an eco-friendly Nafion/lignin composite membrane with excellent performance for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). Through facile solution casting, the Nafion/lignin composite membrane presents the merits of high conductivity and low vanadium ions permeability. Under high current density (120 mA cm−2), the VRFB single cell with the optimized Nafion/lignin composite membrane exhibits superior performance metrics to commercial counterpart: high Coulombic efficiency (~97.4%) and energy efficiency (~82.7%), and prominent cyclability with slower capacity decay for ~52.8% capacity retention after 1000 cycles (vs. Nafion 212 membrane ~34.8% after only 150 cycles). More importantly, compared with the pristine Nafion 212 membrane, the cost of the composite membrane is reduced sharply by reducing the usage amount of Nafion polymer, while maintaining the membrane stability. Thus, the Nafion/lignin composite membrane is one of the competitive candidates for VRFB towards commercialization.

Abstract:The quest for a cost-effective, chemically-inert, robust and proton conducting membrane for flow batteries is at its paramount. Perfluorinated membranes suffer severe electrolyte diffusion, whereas conductivity and dimensional stability in engineered thermoplastics depend on the degree of functionalization. Herein, we report surface-modified thermally crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol-silica (PVA-SiO2) membranes for the vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). Hygroscopic, proton-storing metal oxides such as SiO2, ZrO2 and SnO2 were coated on the membranes via the acid-catalyzed sol-gel strategy. The membranes of PVA-SiO2-Si, PVA-SiO2-Zr and PVA-SiO2-Sn demonstrated excellent oxidative stability in 2 M H2SO4 containing 1.5 M VO2+ ions. The metal oxide layer had good influence on conductivity and zeta potential values. The observed trend for conductivity and zeta potential values was PVA-SiO2-Sn > PVA-SiO2-Si > PVA-SiO2-Zr. In VRFB, the membranes showcased higher Coulombic efficiency than Nafion-117 and stable energy efficiencies over 200 cycles at the 100 mA cm−2 current density. The order of average capacity decay per cycle was PVA-SiO2-Zr < PVA-SiO2-Sn < PVA-SiO2-Si < Nafion-117. PVA-SiO2-Sn had the highest power density of 260 mW cm−2, while the self-discharge for PVA-SiO2-Zr was ~3 times higher than Nafion-117. VRFB performance reflects the potential of the facile surface modification technique to design advanced membranes for energy device applications.

Abstract:The crossover of vanadium ions through proton-exchange membranes such as those of Nafion is the chief reason that results in the low energy efficiency and high self-discharge rate of vanadium redox flow batteries (VRB). With respect to applicability, the ideal proton-exchange membrane used in VRB should possess simultaneously high proton conductivity and low vanadium ion permeability. Here, we report a novel approach using a polyelectrolyte layer-by-layer self-assembly technique to fabricate a barrier layer onto the surface of Nafion membrane by alternate adsorption of polycation poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and polyanion poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (PSS), which can suppress the crossover of vanadium ions. The Nafion-[PDDA-PSS](n) membrane (n the number of multilayers) obtained shows much lower vanadium ion permeability compared with plain Nafion membrane. Accordingly, the VRB with Nafion-[PDDA-PSS](n) membrane exhibits a higher coulombic efficiency (CE) and energy efficiency (EE) together with a slower self-discharge rate than that of Nafion system. The highest CE of 97.6% and EE of 83.9% can be achieved at charge-discharge current density of 80 mA cm(-2) and 20 mA cm(-2), respectively.
Supramolecular Modifying Nafion with Fluoroalkyl‐Functionalized Polyoxometalate Nanoclusters for High‐Selective Proton Conduction

Abstract:Proton exchange membranes with high selectivity are urgently required in energy and electronic technologies. Nafion, a state-of-the-art commercial proton exchange membrane material, faces significant challenges. It suffers from the permeation of undesirable substances, like hydrogen in fuel cells and vanadium ions in redox flow batteries, due to the unmatched sizes between its ionic domains (3~5 nm) and these substances. In this work, we present a supramolecular modification strategy that simultaneously enhances the proton conductivity and selectivity of Nafion. We employ fluoroalkyl-grafted polyoxometalate (POMs) nanoclusters as supramolecular additives to modify Nafion via co-assembly. These POMs can precisely and robustly decorate at Nafion ionic domains, with their fluoroalkyl chains anchoring into the perfluorinated matrix while their inorganic clusters stay in the ionic regions. The hybrid membranes, with continuous proton hopping sites and nanoscale steric hindrance offered by POMs, exhibit a 56% increase in proton conductivity and a 100% improvement in proton/vanadium selectivity. This leads to significantly enhanced power density and energy efficiency in fuel cells and vanadium flow batteries, respectively. These results underscore the intriguing potential of molecular cluster additives in improving the functions of ion-conducting membranes.
